“ It may not be until the new heavens and the new earth, but we're eventually going to know that God had goodness that was behind the dark clouds of our lives.” So says Mark Vroegop, newly appointed president of The Gospel Coalition (TGC) and author of Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy, during his conversation with Russell Moore. Moore and Vroegop talk about the ways TGC has evolved since its founding through leaders such as Tim Keller and Don Carson. They talk about the nature of belief, how trust in Jesus alters our understanding of who we are, and navigating seasons of doubt. Their conversation covers ministry partnerships, vocational decision making, and the importance of deep friendships. Moore and Vroegop consider what the Psalms have to say about seasons of doubt and grief, the relationship between character and gifting, and trust in the goodness of God. How do we navigate those long and difficult seasons of waiting? What do we do when we don't know what to do or how to move forward in life?Author and pastor Mark Vroegop doesn't love waiting. But it has been in those moments when life wasn't going as expected or plans weren't unfolding as he anticipated that he experienced a different kind of connection with God. Learning to wait, he says, is a crucial part of every believer's spiritual journey. As he studied what the Bible has to say about waiting and as he waited for things in his own life, Mark began to see the incredible fruitfulness that those seasons of uncertainty can produce. In his latest book,Waiting Isn't a Waste: The Surprising Comfort of Trusting God in the Uncertainties of Life, he shows readers how to wait on God and what God can do through those times when life feels unsettled. In this insightful episode, Davey and Mark discuss what true Biblical waiting looks like, how to reconcile God's goodness in seasons of waiting, and the collective waiting that we often face together with other believers. If you're in a place where your life feels uncertain, this conversation will help you see that even in these times when it seems like nothing is happening, God is working and your waiting is never a waste.Website:https://www.markvroegop.com/Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/vroegopmark/?hl=enFacebook:https://www.facebook.com/markdvroegopOther: Mark's Previous Episode: #99https://www.nothingiswasted.com/podcast1/episode-99Book: Waiting Isn't a Waste: The Surprising Comfort of Trusting God in the Uncertainties of Lifehttps://a.co/d/9x7aRCmChurch and Ministry Leaders: Join us for The Healing Leader Roundtable on March 6, 2025 in Indianapolis. It is often the gap periods of waiting in our lives that are the most difficult - anxiety and anger can set in, and we may find ourselves going down a negative and destructive path. This very issue is something that Mark Vroegop, the lead pastor of College Park Church, set out to tackle in his book, Waiting Isn't a Waste: The Surprising Comfort of Trusting God in the Uncertainties of Life. Mark talks about waiting on God in those “gap moments,” and trusting His provision. Waiting is beautiful, promised, and a biblical command, he says. He also describes it as a “hopeful position that we can live in.” Waiting doesn't have to be painful - it can be a major growing season for our faith in Jesus. Have you been walking through hard circumstances and you felt like you just needed to voice those feelings and frustrations to God and maybe even wrestle with him about why you are in these circumstances? Oh friend, I don't know if you realize it, but that is one of the steps of lament. I am so excited to Mark Vroegop on the podcast this week as we focus on what it means to lament. I think sometimes people are confused about this word, so I cannot wait to talk about his book, *Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy: Discovering the Grace of Lament. Imprecatory psalms. Betcha can't say that 5 times fast. Just how should Christians handle these passages that call down judgment on our enemies? Let's learn from King David how to be 'properly' offended and what it means for us today. We are taking a one-week break for Jimmy to work on his tan but will return the first week of June.We couldn't answer every question about this passage but we certainly hope we helped! On this episode of This vs. That, we talk with with Mark Vroegop about the concepts of frustration and anger. We explore how these emotions are often intertwined, and how they can be both righteous and unrighteous. Mark shares his experiences at College Park Church in Indianapolis and also provides a glimpse into his personal life. We examine the complexities of these emotions in the context of our faith and our responses to a world marked by sin and brokenness. We also discuss the balance of asking questions from a place of suffering versus a place of demand. Finally, we contemplate how dealing with these emotions requires strong theological foundations and faith. God means for the church to be a place of transformation as people encounter His love and form a relationship with Jesus. One crucial piece of transformation occurs in our relationship with God when we become honest with Him in prayer."I sometimes get frustrated by the state of the world; I look at all the brokenness around me, the constant news cycle of gloom and despair. Verses 7-9 of Isaiah 33 are a reality to many people in many places. At times, I feel despair, which in and of itself is not wrong, and I lament about the state of the world. 'Lament is how you live between the poles of a hard life and trusting God's sovereignty. Lament is how we bring sorrow to God. Without lament, we won't know how to process pain. My lament fuels my prayers; it fuels my cry of 'Lord, please arise, please be lifted up, please be exalted in our time.'''Book- Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy by Mark Vroegop
Back in October, my husband Brad and I had the opportunity to meet Mark Vroegop at the Our Hearts are Home conference in Indianapolis. Mark is the lead pastor of College Park Church in Indianapolis. He and his wife, Sarah, are the parents of four living children, and a daughter, Sylvia, who was stillborn in 2004. He is the author of a book titled “Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy: Discovering the Grace of Lament”, in which he explores how we can bring our sorrow to God by vocalizing our pain through honest spiritual wrestling. It was a blessing to have the opportunity to meet him at the OHAH conference, and I am sharing his presentation from that event with you today. I hope this blesses you as much as it blessed me!
