We have now established the tradition of beginning each series with a walking episode. The first was around the city of Sheffield and our second is around Grasmere in the Lake District. Made famous by the Lakeland poets and especially William Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy who lived in Dove Cottage, Grasmere town sits next to the lake of the same name. We began at the cottage and the wonderful museum dedicated to the Wordsworths and then walked right around the lake. We encountered other walkers and then finished off in the Churchyard where the Wordsworth's are buried. We stayed the night in the wonderful Traveler's Rest on the edge of the town. The next morning we headed up towards Easdale and the path up to the Tarn looking over Sour Milk Gill. Thanks to all the people we encountered on the walk for their time and obvious love of the Lakes. We would recommend Dorothy Wordsworth's Grasmere Journal, any version of the Prelude by William Wordsworth and Jonathan Bates excellent biography Radical Wordsworth. Have you tried group essays? We're unpacking the what and how of group essays and why you should give them a try.First up, group essays save us time. Fewer essays to grade means more time for you to enjoy that extra cup of coffee. But the benefits go beyond that. When students work together, they learn to peer edit and provide feedback. It's about creating a cohesive piece that sounds like one voice, pushing students to think critically and collaborate effectively. Plus, with the right upfront teaching and modeling, peer feedback can significantly improve the quality of their final submissions, reducing your workload even more. Finally, group essays foster collaborative learning and essential skill-building. As students combine their strengths and support each other's weaknesses, they develop vital interpersonal skills. This is not just about saving time on grading; it's about preparing students for real-world teamwork. Then sit back and watch as they grow into confident writers and collaborators. Vietnam War veteran, Bob Wieland lost his legs to a mortar mine. In Vietnam in June 1969, his squad walked into a mine field. When a member of his unit stepped on a booby-trapped mortar, Wieland rushed to give first aid but he, too, stepped on an 82mm buried mortar, a round designed to destroy tanks. It severely damaged his legs; they had to be amputated above the knee. In a letter to his parents after his accident, he wrote: June 14, 1969, Dear Mom and Dad. I'm in the hospital. Everything is going to be O.K. The people here are taking good care of me. Love, Bob. P.S. I think I lost my legs. After recovering from his injuries, he was inspired to become a marathon participant. Over his lifetime he has finished many marathons, often taking multiple days to finish. He is the only double amputee to finish the difficult Kona, Hawaii Ironman race without a wheelchair. He "ran" across America on his hands, taking three years, eight months, and six days to travel from coast to coast. Before joining the Army, Wieland was a three-sport athlete on the verge of signing a Major League Baseball contract with the Philadelphia Phillies. Wieland has been a strength and conditioning coach for the Green Bay Packers.
This week, Tara and Kris start by celebrating the conclusion of the WGA strike and sending support for SAG-AFTRA in their continued quest for an equitable deal. Looking ahead, they wonder about the future of AI. Tara doesn't think it's as bleak as it sounds. Kris disagrees. Luckily we have opinions on survival reality shows to bring us together. After getting deep into Alone Australia and Survivor, we hear more about RuPaul's Drag Race UK from Tara and then dive headlong into recommendations! Official Recommendations From Kris: Gaga: Five Foot Two (Netflix) This week, Kris recommends the 2017 Netflix documentary, Gaga: Five Foot Two, which covers a year in the life of Lady Gaga as she works on her fifth studio release album, Joanne. It's a deeply vulnerable piece according to Kris, examining long standing pain conditions that the artist suffers from. It also details the 51st Super Bowl half-time show where Gaga gave her critically acclaimed appearance. From Tara: Bingo Love by Tee Franklin (Author), Jenn St-Onge (Artist) After comic creator Lawrence Lindell talked about it in our bonus episode with him, Tara picked up one of the books he suggested: Bingo Love. Spoiler: she fell in love with it. Bingo Love is a second-chance romance between two Black women that starts in the 1960s when they meet and become instant best friends at their church's Sunday bingo. Separated once their relationship turns romantic and is discovered, they go on to marry men, have families, and then meet once more sixties at another Sunday bingo when they're in their 60's. It's a beautiful story about love, second chances, and honestly how many stories like this include Black women? We love to see it. Check it out. Yes, you may have heard this very first and extremely popular summer edition of the Teach Your Children series before. As a matter of fact, these are some of the most popular episodes in the library. And for good reason. Isn't parenting one of the greatest responsibilities we could take on? And helping parents along is this first in the TYC series, The Three C's. The twist this season is the fresh new content to lead you into the series as Jim and Matthew have a discussion of where they currently are with their, now mostly grown children and it's testimony to what has been put into raising them. Both the good and the not so good. If you've heard the series before and still have children you're raising, repetition can't hurt and if you're already familiar and don't feel the need to repeat the episode, simply listen for the fresh content and enjoy.
