On Episode 221, “Self-Inserts,” Elizabeth and Flourish welcome fan studies scholar Effie Sapuridis to talk about the wide world of self-inserts, including Y/N and x reader fic, imagines, shifting, and classic Mary Sues. Topics discussed include differences between platforms, including AO3, Wattpad, Tumblr, and especially TikTok; ties to things like roleplaying, LARPing, and theme parks; and whether self-insert forms are leading us towards a future of ~personalized AI storytelling~. Plus: they talk about why there's so little academic work on self-inserts, and the ethical issues around continuing to study the Harry Potter fandom.
We take a look back at our whine and cheez party, "Your Protagonist Sucks!" That means it's time to let loose on the Mary-Sues, the undeserved winners, and all those flat crappy protagonists that made you wince in the theater! Merry Christmas from VoxPopcast. The thing is, we've been doing Christmas special episodes for the last couple weeks already. And we figure you probably have a Christmas episode or twelve… The post e298. Why Does Everyone Hate Mary Sues? appeared first on The VoxPopcast.
Molly has to prepare dinner for the Averys and Salvio, but she gets distracted by her own horniness and ruins the whole dinner. Later, she joins Salvio in his room for a nightcap, where, despite being a complete virgin, she turns out to be a master at sex because of course she is. All female characters written in these sorts of books are basically sexual Mary-Sues. Keego explains to the audience the story of the Amsterdam-dad-glory-hole story, and Alex talks about his love-hate relationship with Chelsea; the sports team, not a woman.
Let teenage girls make bad art, GODDAMMIT! This week, Emily and V beat a familiar drum as they recount the unfortunate invention of Mary Sue: she's beautiful, she's smart, she's the best pilot in the Galaxy, and all your faves are in love with her. And so what?! Who does it really harm to let girls have a power fantasy?! God forbid women do anything. And by anything, we mean write self-insert Mary Sue fanfiction about Captain Kirk and Spock and Bones all falling in love with her. She deserves it. You deserve it. We all deserve a little treat. Have you ever been accused of writing a Mary Sue? How did it affect you?
Suzanne Collins returns to the big screen this fall with “The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes", but it's worth taking a look back at the book that started the phenomenon: THE HUNGER GAMES. In episode 291, Luke & James debate utopian fiction vs. dystopian fiction, dive into the “Battle Royale” controversy, learn about “Just War” theory, react to love triangles that work, and the value of Mary Sues, then head for the cornucopia just in time for Thanksgiving. Join them next week when they react to the film adaptation directed by Gary Ross! ¿Conoces esos personajes perfectos, pero planos, sosos, y que terminan aburriendo al lector porque no evolucionan nada? Pues precisamente hoy las mamarrachas vienen a hablarte de ellos, y de todos los Mary Sues y Gary Stues que nos encontramos en la literatura y en la ficción. Desde Harry Potter hasta La casa del dragón, hoy vamos a analizar un montón de personajes.

Character design is a fun process but not without its challenges. Do you design the character or their story first? I've followed both of those approaches, they have pluses and minuses. On one hand when you create the character first that can make it a real passion project, you make a cool character and then create a story for them to live in and be themselves. But that can also lead to Mary Sues, wish fulfillment and self inserts, which makes for a weak story. Creating characters to fit a story can sometimes lead to using a lot of stereotypes and ending up with fairly generic and bland characters, which can make for a dull story. So it's best to use a bit of balance and judgment. In this Quackcast we all talk about how we developed some of our own characters, particularly how Banes and I came up with the characters for Bottomless Waitress. Nicky was an interesting example. Banes' outline for her was a rugged, queer woman truck driver, short haired, average height, average build etc, but when it came for me to draw her I had my own vision for an extremely tall muscular, person; she wore bootleg jeans, a tight white tank-top and cowboy boots, a tattoo on one shoulder, pretty eyes with a strong Italian nose, hair dark shaved short at the back of her head with a long blond fringe at the front. I was thinking of Gina Gershon in Bound and Lori Petty in Tank Girl. It was a fun comic to design for! Lucky Patrons at the $5+ level get to see us talk about character boob design for the Patreon video XD How do you go about designing your characters? This week Gunwallace has given us the theme to Sunday Punch! Gunwallace says: I know I've done a theme for Tag Forester before, but since it got featured I made one for the current story (Originally Tag got a theme in Quackcast 464). There's a mystery to be solved… There is always a mystery to be solved when you're Tag Forester, detective. He's out there on the mean streets, alone, looking for trouble to prevent trouble, taking his life in his hands and taking the world by the balls. I recently went down a rabbit hole and learned more about film making and how to tell a successful story.I learned about heroes, Mary Sues, antagonists, and what lessons we learn from them.It reminded me that you are the hero of your own story, and I wondered if you are pleased with the type of story you currently write for yourself? For more information about Evan, check out evandunn.com and sign up for a free sample coaching session.takethestagecoaching@gmail.comInstagram @takethestagecoachingTwitter @TakeOpera
Cursed Child Part One Act One (first half of) We're finally here! The play that has loomed over us for the entire run of the podcast is finally in our hands. After years of hearing about the Trolley Witch and reading complaints about Mary Sues... it's time for Cursed Child! We went very long on this episode, so I've split it into two almost 2 hour episodes. This week we tackle the first quarter or so of the first play (this is technically two plays!), the first half of Act One. There's plenty to discuss here: the history of the play, how much involvement JKR had versus her collaborators, and the unrealistic expectations the publishers and JKR may have set for the fanbase that doomed this play before it ever had a chance... and that's before we get to the play itself, which involves time travel wife theft and bad parenting galore!
