Ben and Rob wash up on ‘The Island Of Dr Moreau', the 1996 commercial and critical flop starring Marlon Brando, Val Kilmer, David Thewlis, and Fairuza Balk. This film is an absolute fever dream involving cloning, body horror and nonsense plotting; only overshadowed by the drama happening behind the scenes. Marlon Brando improvised what lines he wasn't fed via earpiece, Val Kilmer was a walking menace and the lead role was recast three times. So how does such a famous book get adapted into one of the messiest films of all time? How did the original director employ literal wizards to help him secure the film? Why did a crew member's hand melt? And why is this film so entertaining to watch even today?CONSUUUME to find out all this and much MUCH more!PLUS! In what Jay has claimed is the episode with "the best bottom five we've ever done," the guys tackle the often-maligned sequel to "The Wizard of Oz," 1985's "Return to Oz," starring Fairuza Balk in a vision of the Emerald City that gave most Gen-X kids recurring nightmares. Assigned by Mike, will Jay's viewing of this movie surface long repressed horrors from childhood? Well, if it doesn't, then both of our intrepid hosts listing off their bottom five child movie traumas most assuredly will have someone curling into a fetal position. When Mike screams "What in the name of bottomless childhood torment are we doing here movie?" you know a nerve has been struck! So jump right in, have a listen, and don't forget to share the cinematic nightmares that haunted your childhood—misery loves company, after all!
Send us a textReturn to Oz is famous for scarring a generation of kids with its dark, surreal imagery and unsettling villains. But was it truly a nightmare, or a bold, creative take on the Oz legend? In this episode, Andrea and Ryan explore whether this dark fantasy was too intense for children or if it was just the kind of movie that challenges kids to confront their fears in a way that few films dared to at the time.Follow us @disneyinsideoutpodcast
What we watched: The Island of Dr. Moreau. Who we watched it for: Fairuza Balk (technically) What we thought: The fact that there is an entire documentary about how completely insane the creation of this movie is should have told us everything we needed to know. Happy New Year! To wrap up Season 6 and kick off Season 7, Leatherface and Maniac are offering you their favourite horror films of the 2000s. As we approach the end of the first quarter of the 21st century, we thought it would be fun to rank our favourite 25 films of the last 24 years. These aren't necessarily "the best" critical films, just the ones we like the most. ERRORS and OMISSIONS: The Craft is 1996, NOT 2009 (oops) Fairuza Balk is the actress Leatherface couldn't remember in The Craft. Amanda Seyfried is the actress Leatherface couldn't remember in Jennifer's Body. Slumdog Millionaire is the Danny Boyle film Maniac blanked on. Wicked gives us the secret origin of the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz. We dive a little deeper into what makes her so unique.Wicked is shaping up to be one of the biggest cinematic hits of the holiday season this year, following on from its wild success first as a bestselling novel and then as an even more successful Broadway musical. Is there the equivalent of an EGOT for adapted properties? Because if so, Wicked just needs a video game or something to qualify. At the heart of Wicked, however, is the sympathetic origin story of the formerly nameless Wicked Witch of the West from the classic Wizard of Oz story. Given both a name and a significant backstory in Wicked, we learn that her trademark green skin wasn't the manifestation of some inner character flaw, but rather a somewhat magical mishap brought about by her mother consuming a potion while pregnant with the future villainess. We admit that delving into the realm of pure magic on Does it Fly? has occasionally proven difficult, but in the case of Elphaba, there's something to the question of just how green a person can get, and the possible causes.Watch the latest episode of Does it Fly? right here or check it out on our YouTube page to learn more. FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! Book Learnin' Wicked is first based on Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, which also spawned the sequels Son of a Witch, A Lion Among Men, and Out of Oz.Of course, all of this goes back to L. Frank Baum's original children's novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. But did you know that book had a whopping thirteen sequels? Oz mythology is vast! The Evolution of Skin Color in HumansMelanin is what gives everyone their skin color, and understanding how and why various skin tones evolved is the foundation of our discussion about the (potential) science of green skin. Read more here.Don't Turn Green! As a quick PSA, here's a guide to how you can keep any copper oxide in jewelry from giving your skin that (lovely?) Oz-like green tint. When People Actually Turned GreenHypochromic anemia, or chlorosis, was a condition that did indeed leave some folks with green-ish skin. We usually try to do a little better than just Wikipedia links in these notes, but because chlorosis isn't really an issue these days, there's not a ton of contemporary writing about it. So start with this Wikipedia entry, and if you want to dig deeper there are two scientific journal articles you can try to access here and here. There will be a quiz next week! (not really)ThalidomideSince the origin of the Wicked Witch's green skin begins with her mom drinking a potion, an example Hakeem cites in this episode is the tragedy surrounding use of Thalidomide during the mid-20th century, in which expectant mothers took a drug that was supposed to help with morning sickness and instead caused severe physical issues with their babies. A full history can be found here, but please beware of disturbing imagery.SUGGESTED VIEWING Oz-related screen adaptations are pretty much too numerous to list, and too varied in quality to really get into in the space we have here. But here are the ones we recommend…The Wizard of Oz (1939)MGM's 1939 musical classic is rightfully the most inescapable, culturally dominant version of the Oz mythos ever put on screen. It's also the most beloved. Almost impossible to imagine anyone reading this isn't aware of it in some capacity. The Wiz (1978)Sydney Lumet and Joel Schumacher's screen adaptation of the stage play which updated the Oz story for a more modern audience features a cast that includes no less than Diana Ross as Dorothy Gale, Richard Pryor (!) as the Wiz, and the legendary Lena Horne as Glinda, the Good Witch of the North.Return to Oz (1985)Long before taking the lead role in The Craft, Fairuza Balk took her turn as Dorothy Gale in a movie that, while essentially a sequel to the 1939 film, is actually more frightening and disturbing than The Craft! Absolutely worth your time.Wicked Part I (2024)Director Jon M. Chu's anticipated adaptation of the book and Broadway musical boasts an absurdly all-star cast including Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Ariana Grande as Galinda, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz, Michelle Yeoh, Peter Dinklage, and more! Zero and Wiz DO NOT RECOMMEND The Craft The one surprising thing about The Craft, a 90s teen horror drama that has gone on to be a Halloween teen classic, is how bland and generic a large amount of the movie is. The film mashes a standard high school outsider story with a power mad style morality tale mixed with threadbare teeny bopper fashion and character depth to a concept that, honestly, wasn't that interesting to begin with. Let's start with what makes this film slightly different: a group of four girls who go to a catholic school start a coven of witches and gain supernatural powers. They use these powers on people who hurt and anger them. Honestly, it's kind of boring. However, you can do something interesting with this. So what does The Craft do? Well, Sarah (a wooden Robin Tunney) uses it to make a person who started a rumor about her fall for her deeply. Bonnie uses it to clear her scars from a burn injury. Rochelle (Rachel True) does a spell that…makes a racist bully bald. Utterly…riveting. The exception I would make is Nancy (Fairuza Balk) whose desires are obscured through most of the film. Now, you do learn something through Balk's performance: Nancy has a pretty damn tough home life which she is ignored and abused by a groan inducingly stereotypically bad step father and lives in a trailer (and yet, she can afford to go to a prep school?). But this leads to a storyline where…well, you can already guess what happens. The film is as formulaic as it comes to where this would actually be home as a Nickelodeon or Disney Channel film. Except that things get surprisingly dark. Even before the spells and conjuring spirits, there are scenes involving suicide, some blood and violence. And there's an attempted rape scene as well. Now, I get this was made during a time where this was trivialized…but not even the next scene the victim tries to save her attempted rapist. I know this sounds like I'm nitpicking, but everything else is so damn bland in this movie that these moments stick out horribly. Literally everything from the characters and story to the actors in this movie are so lifeless and boring. With the exception of Fairuza Balk. Balk is really the only actor in this film that feels like she trying something. Then again, her character is the only one with a personality that is entertaining. But Balk is playing a campy, over the top villain and it feels like she's relishing chewing scenery in every shot…especially when she turns into the ultimate villain. But Balk can't save this cornball teen horror film from being as dull as it is. Everything else in the film is bland and dry leading to a movie that mostly runs on autopilot.

"Pick Me Up" isn't just a great episode of TV, it's an underrated gem that Bennett and Jim both recommend highly to all genre fans. Michael Moriarty delivers a performance for the ages in Larry Cohen's final directorial effort, the high-concept thrill ride, 'Pick Me Up.' Moriarty is one of two roving killers who menace a bus full of passengers before trailing our final girl (The Waterboy's Fairuza Balk). One killer's a trucker who picks up passengers before dispatching them. The other's a drifter who thumbs rides to make his kills. Come for that can't-miss premise and stay for the inventive kills and one-of-a-kind acting choices. Created by Mick Garris, Masters of Horror was a two-season series on Showtime that challenged genre legends to create an hour-long horror film. Follow along as Bennett and Jim are forced to spend no more than 20 minutes discussing each episode from the first season of the series or face a room full of poisonous gas.
Send us a textEpisode 185, and the third part of our HUGtober season of Halloween podcasts is here, and this week, Liam and Rob are looking back at 90s cult classic, The Craft. With its memorable cast, wonderfully 90s fashion sense and utterly unforgettable star turn from Fairuza Balk, The Craft proved hugely popular with a certain brand of teenager back in 96.....but what about in 2024? Does it hold up? Is Nancy still a top-tier onscreen witch? Are those clothes fashionable again? Why are there so many witches in LA? Check out the link in the bio to find out.

I love reviewing films that have been on my list for ages but haven't watched yet. This was such a great film that I took me way too long watch. Over the past few years this has become a theme, so much that I made (and will add to) another list on Letterboxd about films I was obsessed with on a late viewing. This has now joined the ranks of that list. Gas Food Lodging, directed by Allison Anders is a great drama and coming of age film set in the Southwest. The performances by Fairuza Balk and Ione Skye need to be studied and talked about more. I get into the INCREDIBLE fashion that stemmed from the late 80s, why J. Mascis is great at composing a movie score, and how I loved the end of this story.Off-topic rants include: fashion and music categorization and why you can think of me as the clerk behind the video rental counter ---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! Hello all you Ed-Heads, and Timbos. I'm ok, i swear... phew, alright. we are covering The Craft. A very female forward horror from 1996, which is an anomaly. It's a fun movie, a bit silly at times. But I think we can respect its.... Fuck. They go to a Catholic school, and wear the outfit.. and you put Neve Campbell, and Fairuza Balk in it. Which to my libido is like sprinkling your coffee with meth. I'm sorry, I tried to not be horny this episode. I really tried. But I am just a man.. made of (mostly) soft fallible things. Fairuza Balk's talented narration will draw listeners into this retelling of a mysterious Tyrolean folktale. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Emily Connelly discuss the rich sound effects and music that bring Jon Klassen's tale to life. Balk captures the youth and curiosity of Otilla, a young girl fleeing into the forest who discovers a mysterious home inhabited by a skull. Balk renders Otilla and the skull's warm dialogue, conveying their easy friendship and growing trust. NORTON WEEK continues! This is of course referring to the legendary actor Edward Norton who broke out big-time with his first ever on-screen appearance in the '96 legal thriller Primal Fear which garnered him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Two years later in '98, he delivered two VERY memorable performances in two VERY different movies which both left their marks on any one frequenting the cinema for years to come - these two seminal films came out just about a month apart and they would make a truly BIZARRE double feature. :) Tony Kaye (mostly before Norton took over during post, as has been reported since its release) directed a very searing portrait of two brothers Daniel and Derek Vinyard who have immersed themselves in hate and bigotry. The older brother Derek is played by Norton in a performance which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor - he becomes the leader for a Neo-Nazi gang and is eventually sent to prison after committing a brutal murder in front of their home. His younger brother Daniel is played by Edward Furlong who eventually joins this gang after his brother is incarcerated. The story follows the struggles of both brothers along with their mother played by Beverly D'angelo. Other co-stars include Fairuza Balk, Elliott Gould, Stacy Keach, Ethan Suplee, Guy Torry, and Avery Brooks.WARNING: There are some racial epithets spoken by characters in this movie contained within clips from the movie included in this podcast.Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

If you've ever wondered what went wrong with Fairuza Balk's childhood, listener David D. has the answer. That's why he commissioned the dark-ass 1985 Disney flop "Return to Oz." Don't be fooled by the made-for-TV movie poster, this sequel to 1939's "The Wizard of Oz" is loaded with terrific effects including an animatronic talking chicken and a princess who can swap out her heads. The sets are amazing, the costumes are at least interesting, and the messages about childhood and mental illness are pretty advanced for a kids' movie. In this episode, the Shat Crew weighs Oz villains against one another, asks what exactly Wheelers do, suggests design improvements for Tik-Tok, shames Auntie Em and pays respects to an overlooked movie that never got the praise it deserved. The Craft (1996) is a beloved teen witch movie that helped define the 90s mall goth experience. It also made supporting actress Fairuza Balk a bit of an icon for the heavy eyeshadow crowd. Does this movie still hold up? Blessed be, yes! Other than a lame soundtrack, this is a fun movie with memorable scenes and decent actors. We talk about what it was like to be a neophyte goth in New Orleans during the late 1900s, witchcraft as a thing that's cool and corny, and the role of life coaches/therapists/Tarot readers in the modern world. Veteran listeners may notice a slight uptick in incoherence from one of the hosts as the episode unfurls its dark wings. It's the curse of edibles. If it all made sense, good job opening your third eye.
"My problem isn't with this movie: It's with you two." - Dick Ebert Everyone's favorite everyman was flummoxed this week as his co-hosts drooled over "The Craft," a movie hand-picked for them by legendary Shat The Movies listener Jen D. When Big D complained that the coven's four witches were "too hot to be outcasts," Ash explained she was a hot outcast. When Big D explained women, Ash countered that she is a woman. And when Big D questioned the friendships depicted in the film, Gene underscored the importance of Bagel Dogs in forging bonds. Was "The Craft" about female empowerment or just a revenge fantasy? Did it tackle serious topics or fail to find a tone? Can $100,000 really change a life, and what really happens at sleepovers? The Shat Crew explores these questions and how many teeth Fairuza Balk has in this episode of Shat The Movies.
