Dr. Gina Cleo, one of Australia's leading habit change experts, shares her expertise on creating healthier, alcohol-free habit loops. In this recording of Dr Cleo's talk to my (Bella) November Alcohol Freedom Challenge, Dr Cleo discusses the science behind dopamine, a neurotransmitter that drives our reward and pleasure systems. On this note, alcohol provides a significant dopamine surge—sometimes up to 360% above baseline—creating a powerful association with relief and pleasure. However, over time, relying on alcohol for dopamine can make other activities feel less rewarding, making it harder to break the habit.  Dr. Cleo emphasises the importance of hacking our reward system by changing our perception of alcohol and introducing new sources of joy. Reframing alcohol as a toxin that disrupts sleep and drains energy can reduce its appeal. At the same time, engaging in healthier activities—cooking a new recipe, trying a hobby, or exercising—can naturally boost dopamine. Novel experiences, even small ones, provide excitement and unpredictability, rewiring your brain to find joy beyond alcohol.  As Dr. Cleo explains, building new habits takes time, with the brain's dopamine levels typically rebalancing within 30 to 90 days. Celebrate each step forward, as acknowledging your progress releases dopamine and reinforces positive behaviours. Listen to Dr. Cleo's practical strategies to rewire your brain, broaden your sources of joy, and thrive without alcohol.

If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be? “Creating better habits isn't just about exercising more or eating healthier, or having a great bedtime routine. It's not about external achievements like making more money, getting fit or losing weight. While habits can and do lead to these outcomes, the real value of habits lies in their power to shape who you become. They mold and reflect the person you aspire to be, telling the story of your life. Ultimately, you become your habits.”___________If you're anything like me, you are constantly working on habits…breaking those bad ones you're not proud of and trying to replace them with the good habits that (supposedly) make our lives better and make us overall better humans. If I had a dollar for every time I wished I had more will power, I'd be a Jenner-Kardashian. I start strong, but lob any curveball in my direction and I'm reaching for whatever I committed to abstain from as fast as you can say ‘pass the muffin'. If only I had more will power, I think. I'm so weak. If this sounds familiar, leading habit-change expert Dr Gina Cleo says that's you, me and everyone we know. “I feel like as a society we've been disillusioned with this idea, almost this paradigm, that will power is the answer. And if we've fallen off the wagon, we just need more will power, more self control - making us the problem.” Dr Gina CleoIf will power isn't the answer as we've been led to believe, instead, Cleo says it's habits that hold the key to our future freedom. She says we should instead think of will power as a bank account, and life's demands are debits aplenty. “Things like making decisions, feeling hungry, not having a very good sleep, feeling any sort of negative emotion, being time poor or stuck between a deadline and other responsibilities, self regulation, all these things deplete your willpower,” Cleo tells me. “Now, you've only got so many credits in your account before it runs out. It's not an infinite resource. Which is why when you start a goal, initially you feel motivated and pumped and you've got all this energy and then eventually we tend to fall off the wagon. So we start something else like a new diet or a new fitness plan when really we're just repeating the cycle of starting, dropping off the wagon, starting, dropping off the wagon with a new strategy. “Habits on the other hand don't need willpower. I always say to people, no matter how tired or stressed or hungry you are, you will always put your seatbelt on in the car. You will always tie your shoelace the same way. You'll always brush your teeth. These things happen because they're habits. They're automatic. They don't need energy or cognitive resources. That's like the juiciest part of, you know, building a life by design rather than just living by default.”In this quick learning Cleo spells out just how we top the account up, plus exactly how to break those bad habits, featuring a little smart strategy and a pinch of kitchen cupboard magic. Got bad habits you're trying to break? Reply to this or drop your goals in the comments so Dr Cleo and I can cheer you on. You know some conversations you have and you just love? I got off this conversation with Dr Gina Cleo with a big smile on my face. What a wonderful, smart, beautiful human! In this episode I ask Gina about how we create habits that last. Whether our success in having the habits we want comes from will power, motivation, or something else. We talk about the difference between the reflexive and reflective part of the brain. I am sharing my experiment with being my best self and why it failed. Gina kindly shared one of the worst moments of her life and how she managed to harness all of the knowledge she'd gained about good habits to rebuild her life and come through to the other side stronger and happier. The word "mindfulness" used to stop me in my tracks and not in a good way! I used to cringe when I heard it, roll my eyes when it was dropped in a sentence and get bamboozled by what the heck it meant! It. Just. Seemed. Like. A. Trendy. Overused. Term. However now I am "one of them!". Let's talk about the why's, how's, what's of mindfulness. In particular let's talk about how one form of mindfulness called "surfing the urge," can bridge the gap between an urge and gratification and help us to beat problematic urges like sugar cravings, alcohol urges and unconscious scrolling on our phones. In fact wait until the end because I will lead you through a 10 point surfing the urge mindfulness coaching exercise that you can apply to help you surf your personal urge!Whether it's the draw of an evening drink or the pull of sugary temptations, this episode is a deep dive into the practicality of mindfulness practices that help navigate our impulses, particularly during those testing hours between 5pm and 8pm.  You'll learn to breathe through cravings, identify triggers, and harness the power of mindful distractions, all while fostering self-compassion. If you find these strategies resonate but you're seeking more personalised guidance, remember, I'm at your service with resources, counselling, and tailored coaching to support you in managing stress and recalibrating your drinking habits. Together, let's chart a course towards a more present, purposeful existence—one mindful moment at a time.Link to Dr Gina Cleo's episode referred to in this episode.ISABELLA FERGUSONLearn more about the services I offer, including online resources and courses: https://isabellaferguson.com.auMy website30 MINUTE NO OBLIGATION INTRODUCTORY CALLBook a introductory callSIGNATURE 6 WEEK ALCOHOL FREE ONLINE SELF-PACED CHALLENGELearn more and get started!ALCOHOL FREEDOM GROUP CHALLENGES - JOIN THE CHALLENGE!Learn more and join in FOLLOW MEinstagram: @alcoholandstresswithisabellalinkedin: www.linkedin.com/in/isabella-ferguson-52022b242

The percentage of depressed people who smoke is higher than the general population. Way higher. When you dig a little deeper, it turns out there is an interesting connection between depression and smoking that you'll find interesting. This episode starts with a brief explanation. https://www.oprah.com/health/quitting-smoking-and-depression Companies are constantly collecting data on you. Everything from what you watch online to what you buy, where you go, your affiliations – all sorts of things. Often that information is sold to data brokers who can then sell that data to other marketers. However, it appears they are also selling it to governments. Government agencies in the U.S and in other countries are acquiring data about you from data brokers. Why would they do that? Should you be worried. That is what Byron Tau is here to discuss. Byron is a journalist based in Washington, D.C., where he writes about law, courts and national security and he is author of the book Means of Control: How the Hidden Alliance of Tech and Government Is Creating a New American Surveillance State (https://amzn.to/49gEf5v). We know a lot more about habits than we used to. This information can be very useful if you ever want to break a bad habit or create a new good one. Someone in the forefront of habit research is Dr Gina Cleo. She has a PhD in habit change and is an assistant professor at Bond University in Australia. She is author of the book The Habit Revolution: Simple Steps to Rewire Your Brain for Powerful Habit Change (https://amzn.to/3PZjFQH). Listen as she reveals how you got those habits in the first place, how to ditch them and then how to get better ones.  We all get the concept of second-hand smoke. It is a health risk for sure. Well, so is second-hand television. In other words, having a television turned on somewhere else in the house that you can hear can be bad for your brain and your kids' brains. Listen as I explain how and why. https://www.cnn.com/2012/10/01/health/kids-background-tv/index.html PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS! Dr Gina Cleo, behavioural scientist, world-renowned habit-change researcher and Adjunct Professor at Bond University. Gina's new book, The Habit Revolution: Simple Steps to Rewire Your Brain for Powerful Habit Change, will be published in Jan 2024. 3 years ago, Gina discovered her husband, who she thought was one of the good guys, was cheating on her. As a behavioural scientist, Gina is very aware of subtle changes in connection or behaviour inconsistencies; how did she miss this? Overnight, her world fell apart. She went from running a successful global business to being too scared to leave the house. The devastating betrayal triggered something deep within. Nothing made sense. Gina lost the ability to do anything and developed agoraphobia and severe PTSD. “Because my mind felt so fractured, I had lost the ability to do anything, even basic things to look after myself. When you think of your morning routine, it might include a habit chain like getting out of bed, going to the bathroom, taking a shower, brushing your teeth, getting dressed, etc. I had somehow lost all that familiarity, and the basics of my daily routine were no longer normal for me because nothing was normal, nothing was certain, nothing was safe.” 20-40% of intimate relationships see at least one incident of sexual infidelity. Traumatic events challenge our view of the world as a safe, fair, and predictable place. Gina read all the books, did A LOT of therapy and implemented a few key healing habits. She found safety and security in regular routines and habits. With time Gina started to rebuild herself, redefine her self-worth and rethink her identity. The key to Gina's recovery was implementing simple micro-habits every day and building on them. Fast forward nearly 3 years and she's on the other side of the healing journey. But every now and then, there's an unexpected trigger or salt thrown on the old wound, and the trauma feels like it was just yesterday. When that happens, she goes back to her healing habits to reset herself. The practice of micro-habits might seem simple, but research shows they're extremely effective. Drawing on personal experience and her years of practice as Australia's leading habit change expert, Dr Gina Cleo can discuss:• Habits big and small - How implementing simple micro-habits can help you recover from minor setbacks or major trauma. This applies to every age group and aspect of life - careers, parenting, business and relationships.• The science of habits – how habits are formed in the brain, how to rewire your brain and ditch bad habits to create positive change.• The gender gap – the latest research shows that gender plays a major role in the experience of habits• Men are more triggered by external or environmental cues whereas women are more triggered by internal and emotional or social cues.• For example, men are triggered by photos or images, whereas women are more triggered by stress.• Men and women are both able to create new or break old habits, but the strategies to focus on should be different for each.• New Addictions – to dating apps, social media, mobile phones. As a trained dietitian, Dr Gina Cleo has helped people improve their health and well-being - however noticed that her clients struggled to maintain their progress over time, much like those elusive goals you might be grappling with at this start of this year. Driven by the desire to find lasting solutions, she pressed pause on her clinic and completed a Ph.D. at Bond University. In this episode of The Savvy Dentist Podcast Dr Jesse Green is joined by Dr. Gina Cleo.  Dr. Gina Cleo is an expert when it comes to habits. With a a PhD in habit research, what she doesn't know about habits isn't worth knowing.  In today's episode Dr Jesse & Dr Cleo discuss what habits actually are, and how to differentiate habits from behaviours.  They dig deep into the psychology and neuroscience behind how habits are formed, how to install healthy habits, and how to uninstall those habits that no longer serve us. The pair also talk about the difference between habits and addiction, how to install workplace habits, how to create a culture based on the habitual way of doing things in an intentional way rather than by default.  Dr. Gina Cleo is one of the world's leading experts in habits and is passionate about translating scientific evidence into simple, actionable strategies to help improve health, wellness, mindset, and lifestyle-related habits – long-term. [06:17] - Most people know what to do, but they don't always do what they know is best. Why? The biggest factor is ‘their values'. How much value we might place on something. So if somebody places a lot of value on their dental hygiene, they're going to put in the effort to floss their teeth and brush twice a day, but if they value something like their time more, they don't value their dental hygiene as much. [08:12] - What is the difference between a habit, and a behaviour? Because they are very different! [13:20] - The secret sauce to creating a habit that sticks and creates lasting change is consistency. Dr Cleo explains how this happens. [17:43] - Our brain is only capable of making up to three changes at one time. However the research suggests it is more productive for creating change and forming a new habit to simply focus on one thing at a time. High achievers struggle to focus on one habit forming thing at a time as they generally feel it is tedious and not enough of a challenge. [20:53] - What's the relationship between habit and addiction? [25:00] - If we want to install organisational habits, and we've got a team of five or 10 or 50 or a hundred people. How do we get all our team onto the same page? [28:47] - We need to be behaviorally flexible, your team will respond really differently to different styles of communication. It's important to understand your team and understand how they're going to respond to the way that you speak to them. If you automate the way that you interact with your staff, it's not going to work.

I am so excited to share this episode with the amazing Dr Gina Cleo.Gina originally graduated as a dietician and through the years that followed, she found that while she could help her clients lose weight and become healthier versions of themselves, it was a short term fix. Gina noticed they were putting on the weight and sinking back into old habits within a few weeks to months afterwards. So, with a burning desire to help people long term, Gina began to study her PHD in habit change at Bond University. Gina has now become one of Australia's leading experts in habit change as she converts her evidence based research into simple, actionable strategies to help implement long term positive change.Gina and I discuss the basics of what habits actually are and how you are most likely going to be able to change them - for good! We discuss habits like emotional eating, bad sleep patterns, nail biting and mindlessly scrolling on our phones and also delve into habits which, I didn't actually realise were habits! Like our reactions to people or situations as well as thought patterns. This is an inspiring chat backed by science and research. Gina discusses how self efficacy is the number 1 predictor of success. Her three steps to achieving a goal or changing a habit align so well with Pass Around the Smile, so I know my community are going to LOVE what she has to say around this!Dr Cleo and I also chat about sacrifices we subconsciously make through our everyday habits and how to weigh up if they are compromising our peace.Gina has so much to say on topics like self control, comparison, values and the connection we crave as humans - and you bet we touch on it all!Gina is all about consistency, not intensity. We've tried different diet fads, exercise routines, and even pills but we become disappointed because it doesn't give us the results that we expect as they are not sustainable (i.e. we end up regaining all the weight we lost). How is creating healthy habits more effective compared to those different health fads we see all over the internet nowadays? In this podcast our Co-Founder Kate Krieg with Dr. Gina Cleo will discuss: What is a habit and when acquired why does maintaining it became effortless and automatic? How does it contribute to our total wellness?  How long does it take to change a habit? Why your personality affects habit change? How exposed are you to the triggers that influence you and your habits? Are self-control and willpower necessary to change a habit? What are the key ingredients to habit development? Do knowledge and awareness change your behaviour towards creating a positive habit? Why consistency is the secret sauce of habit change? We all struggle in understanding this concept, and most of the time we are sceptical about it. It is a new year and it is time for us to learn how we can use habits to build and grow our self-efficacy to become a better, new version of us and to achieve our personal, work goals and most importantly to sustain a HEALTHIER lifestyle.

Research suggests that half of everything we do is habitual. But most attempts to improve our health actually focus on changing behaviours rather than habits, meaning we still need to consciously use effort and willpower in order to continue our improvements into the long-term. Our next guest has identified this huge problem and made it her life's work to research some amazingly simple ways to create healthy habits that last for life. In this playful and lively interview, Australia's only full-time habits researcher Dr Gina Cleo and I discuss: - The difference between behaviours and habits. - Setting the record straight on how long it takes to create a habit. - Gina likes variety, Glenn likes routine (and what this means for you!) - You only need motivation to get started (habits keep you going!) - Changing habits WITHOUT a diet or exercise plan (no yo-yo!) - How habit change is NOT sexy, but it IS life-changing. - Creating micro-habits to re-wire the brain's pathways. - Breaking habits through ‘restructuring' and ‘reprogramming'. - How to make new habits that are as rewarding as old habits!
