On today's episode of TV Reload I am joined by Gareth Whitton who was the winner from Dessert Masters Australia for 2023. The spin off from MasterChef Australia finished a few weeks ago and I have been looking forward to sharing this exciting look back at his time on the show. Gareth is a chef with 18 years experience. After working in some of the world's best restaurants, he started baking tarts at home during Melbourne's COVID-19 lockdown. Quickly, his neighbours (and shortly the whole of Melbourne) were lining up to taste his delicious goods. Which soon evolved into the opening of two ‘Tarts Anon' locations. Which… landed him a role as a guest judge on Masterchef Australia in 2022 and the opportunity to compete for the bragging rights of the dessert world in this latest televised competition. I will find out about his relationship with the competition and why he thinks keeping it simple at times helped him win. Garath will talk about the effect COVID had on the cooking world and why he felt disillusioned by the whole industry. If you have wondered what kind of preparation and planning goes into these cooking shows. Gareth will also share what dishes he already locked in prior to filming the series. Plus we will get plenty of exclusives from behind the scenes of ‘Dessert Masters' Which is still available to watch on Ten Play if you missed any of the delicious episodes. Episode 33! We're back and stoked to be joined by a super inspiring, fun and determined woman - Erchana Murray-Bartlett. Erchana joins us from Sydney, off the back of 120 consecutive marathons, having broken a Guinness World Record and continuing to crush the existing record as she runs over 6000kms from Cape York to Melbourne on her “Tip to Toe” mission. Erchana talks to us about her roots as an athlete, mainly in highly competitive soccer; her journey into running and subsequently racing as an elite on the road and her time in Melbourne's COVID lockdown which sparked the idea of her Tip to Toe challenge. We hear about the realities of running 150 back to back marathons; the logistics; the toll it takes on the mind and body and how Erchana continues to maintain such a positive, bright spirit amongst it all. Erchana also shares with us the very important environmental advocacy element of this adventure, raising funds and awareness for the Wilderness Society and in particular putting the spotlight on the Australian extinction crisis. In addition to the not so small task of completing a marathon every single day, Erchana has a busy schedule visiting schools, community groups and local clubs, sharing this message. We were blown away by her energy and also really grateful for Erchana's honesty in terms of the highs and lows of this journey. One of Erchana's genie wishes was for an increased focus on the environmental message of this mission and with that in mind, we're sharing an extract from her fundraising page here: Funds raised from Tip to Toe will go towards: • Educating communities on acting on the extinction crisis before we lose Aussie biodiversity. • Supporting the Wilderness Society's work to see Australia's nature protected. • Advocating towards protecting our natural ecosystems and the incredible wildlife within them. If you're not able to donate, no worries! There are plenty of other ways you can help our important cause that is equally impactful. You can: - Share our story! - Start a conversation about the threats to the local wildlife in your community. - Contact your local MP about their plans for protecting local wildlife - Volunteer to clean up parks and waterways. Check out: https://www.wilderness.org.au/work/movement-for-life - Plant native trees - Keep your beloved cat indoors where possible, especially at night. - Minimising single-use plastics. These actions have very real, direct impacts on our endangered and at-risk wildlife and are a great example of PEOPLE POWER! Wishing you all the best for the rest of your incredible adventure Erchana! A companion for podcast episode "NSP042 – COVID-19 was just a story", I spoke to Andrew Roberts, a veteran Melbourne comedian of 15 years who found new purpose when the tyranny of Melbourne's COVID-19 lockdowns struck back in 2020. Andrew was amongst the first to hit the streets in protest, and was harassed, assaulted and detained by police. He was ostracized by family, friends and much of the comedy community for his views, and banned on social media. Despite this, Andrew continued to find humor in the situation, and believes the actions of the protesters were instrumental in winning the war against Dan Andrews and tyrannical regime. Believe what you will about the extreme restrictions inflicted on Melbourne during the COVID-19 pandemic, Andrew's story is one of principled persistence and courage. Let's hear him challenge the narrative.

In a funk of post-move fatigue, we binged five Fast & Furious movies. Turns out we have a lot to say about these films, from Vin Diesel's self-insert fantasy of an indomitable and virile hero-figure, to Lucas Black aging ten years in a scene, James Wan's prominence in Australian cinema and that bloody plane runway in Fast & Furious 6. Here's the link to the Hierograph Kickstarter, featuring a story by Emmet O'Cuana and Tim Molloy. And Aurealis #135 features an essay by Emmet on the writing of Michael Shea.
