Lieutenant Michael Thornton served in Vietnam as a Navy SEAL. On October 31st, 1972, then Petty Officer Thornton was assigned to a night-time SEAL patrol. Thornton and three South Vietnamese SEALs were led by Lieutenant Tom Norris, and tasked with gathering intel on North Vietnam's southern advance. After taking down two enemies, Thornton was spotted, and 50 NVA soldiers began chasing him. In a five-hour firefight, Thornton retreated back to the shore while fending off the enemy. After learning that his leader, Lieutenant Norris, was presumed dead, Thornton ran 500 yards in the direction of the enemy in order to reach Norris' last known position. There he fought off five enemies and found Norris with serious injuries to his head. Thornton put his wounded ally on his shoulders and began to head back to shore, but a friendly artillery round sent them both 20 feet into the air. After hitting the ground, Thorton put Norris back on his soldiers and realized that he was still alive. Thorton carried him 400 yards back to the beach, inflated his life jacket, and began towing him into the sea. When one of the South Vietnamese SEALs was shot in the water, Thornton towed him along as well. He swam for two hours before they were picked up by a friendly ship. On October 15th, 1972, Lieutenant Michael E. Thornton was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions on the Halloween of 1973. Lieutenant Norris had been told by his doctors that he couldn't leave the hospital to attend the ceremony, but Thornton had other plans. On the day of the ceremony, Thornton snuck Norris out the back door of the hospital and brought him to the White House so he could attend it. Learn more about your ad choices. But within hours, Michael Thornton and Thomas Norris would be battling to save their team – and each other – against terrible odds. What Michael Thornton did that day would become SEAL legend…and a lesson in the true nature of courage. Jessie part three. For this, the third and final instalment of our mini-series about the 1930s' biggest UK film star, Jessie Matthews, we met up with Dr Jennifer Voss of De Montford University to talk about Friday the Thirteenth (1933).NB: this is the Friday the Thirteenth from 1933, directed by Victor Saville with a large ensemble cast including Jessie as well as her husband, Sonnie Hale, Emlyn Williams (who also wrote the script), Gordon Harker, Edmund Gwenn, Eliot Makeham, Frank Lawton and the lovely Ursula Jeans plus many more. It is not the silly 1980s slasher film of the same name.Friday the Thirteenth consists of seven separate stories which all come together at the end when our many protagonists find themselves aboard a bus which is involved in a fatal accident. To talk about Jessie, her life & career we're joined again by Rob Baker, Jade Evans and Dr Lawrence Napper. For this episode we also meet David Drummond who knew Jessie for the last thirty years of her life and dated her daughter! For many years, David ran a shop in the West End selling theatre and film related memorabilia & ephemera. Sadly the shop is no longer there but you can still visit the Pleasures of Past Times website. Our thanks to Professor Sean Street who provided some of the archive audio in the programme.Watch this 1981 BBC documentary about Jessie Matthews.Jessie appeared on This is Your Life in 1961.Jessie's biographer, Michael Thornton wrote this appalling, salacious, muckraking and probably untrue article for the appalling, salacious, muckraking Daily Mail which I have...

Jessie starred as Harriet Green in both the stage show and the film. We're joined by Dr Melanie Williams of The University of East Anglia to talk about the film and Rob Baker, Jade Evans and Dr Lawrence Napper return to the show to talk about Jessie's life. Evergreen is the story of two Harriet Greens, in which one Harriet finds fame and fortune by impersonating the other.Evergreen was third of five Jessie Matthews films directed by Victor Saville and co-starred Mr Jessie Matthews, Sonnie Hale. Barry Mackay plays the love interest, Tommy Thompson and Betty Balfour plays Maudie, continuing her successful transition from silent films to talkies. The Big Jessie series. This is the first of a three part mini-series focusing on the 1930s' biggest UK film star, Jessie Matthews.None of Jessie's films were set in Soho, but the fact that she was born on Berwick Street where her dad was a market trader, that she lived in William & Mary Yard on Brewer Street and that she learned to dance in an upstairs room at The Blue Posts means that, as far as we're concerned, any film starring Jessie Matthews is a Soho film.Across the next three episodes we will talk about three different Jessie films and learn about her life through talking to several special guests. In this first episode, we talk to Rob Baker, Jade Evans and Dr Lawrence Napper about Jessie's early life and her rise to stardom and Lawrence hangs around to talk about Jessie's 1933 breakthrough film, The Good Companions. Also starring a very young John Gielgud, Edmund Gwenn and Mary Glynne, The Good Companions was directed by Victor Saville, produced by Michael Balcon and was based on a best selling 1929 novel of the same name by JB Priestley.Watch this 1981 BBC documentary about Jessie Matthews.Jessie appeared on This is Your Life in 1961.Jessie's biographer, Michael Thornton wrote this appalling, salacious, muckraking and probably untrue article for the appalling, salacious, muckraking Daily Mail which I have pasted it into this Google Doc to deprive the Mail of your clicks.Rob Baker is on Twitter and you can buy his books HERE.

Michael Thornton, Founder and CEO of World TradeX, is turning his using his experience and passion to create a revolutionary new buy and sell platform focused on agriculture. When launched World TradeX will be a global buy and sell platform to support the world food chain. There's currently nothing like it available to help farmers sell their goods in a one-to-one transaction, eliminating the middleman. They're envisioning the platform will be the Amazon for food. Covering the whole process from farmer to purchaser including logistics, finance, insurance and of course the purchase transaction all in one place. Listen as Michael explains how World TradeX takes the best functionality of other apps and technologies (like amazon, uber and even tinder) and integrates it into their system. Farmers will be able to create profile and product cards that will be used as NFTs that can be tracked as the goods move along the process. Also, with NFTs they're even envisioning buyers will be able to purchase future crops at today's prices. In 2023 World TradeX will go live in California as a beta. Once the kinks are worked out their plan is to expand further in the US then internationally, focusing on two of the world's largest agricultural producing countries, India and Brazil. “Everyone has to eat” says Michael and thinks once it's up and running that the app will sell itself. Currently farmers go through brokers/agents that take 20-30% of their profit. This new system, with a much smaller flat rate and no need for the middleman, means more money for the farmers selling their products and smaller price tags for the buyers. They've been working for 7 years to get the idea out in CA through trade shows and networking. When it launches, he believes word of mouth will create excitement and bring in users. Once they launch beyond the US, they'll have language and legal requirements to consider. Attorneys in each country will handle the legal paperwork in the appropriate languages and other translations will be handled as needed either through humans or automatic translations for things that aren't crucial or critical. Michael's main advice is to “do your research” and know what the market for your goods and services is in the countries you're looking to export to and what requirements there are to sell there. He attended the EXIM conference to learn more about the financial programs available to international agriculture companies and farmers, and to network with other business owners doing global business. When asked about his favorite foreign word he replied “Arepa, because it's fun to say and delicious to eat.” An arepa is like a pancake and is typically eaten at breakfast. Michaels' favorite type is the Columbian arepa made with yuca flour and cheese. Today we get to speak with Alec Lace, He's the Host of First Class Fatherhood launched in 2018 with a vision to change the narrative of fatherhood and family life. The show quickly became one of the top parenting podcasts in America due to Alec interviewing some of the most famous fathers in the world including Dean Cain, Deion Sanders, Tony Hawk, and Tom Brady. Because of the show's popularity, Alec was invited to be on the field for the Super Bowl LIII media day in 2019 to interview dads such as Tom Brady, Julian Edelman, and Bill Belichick. Additionally, our nation's heroes hold a special place in Alec's heart, and on his podcast, he has interviewed legendary servicemen such as Navy SEALs Rob O'Neill and Marcus Luttrell, “Black Hawk Down” pilot Mike Durant, Benghazi survivor John Tiegen, and Medal of Honor recipients Ed Byers, Dakota Meyer and Michael Thornton. Alec does all of this while continuing to be a dedicated railroad mechanic, a position he has held for twenty years and he even drives Uber on weekends as a way to further spread his message. First Class Fatherhood can be heard each week on iHeart Radio, Spotify, Pandora, and iTunes. Our Guest Alec Lace LinkedIn : linkedin.com/in/alec-lace-587054177 Hacks to Take Away We talked about the importance of having children and the importance of being a father. Social media has definitely done a lot of damage to the young generation We shared about the balance between a healthy family versus a family that's not so healthy. 90% of the kids that are homeless in this country come from a fatherless home. You need to be secure and straight and happy before you can make anybody else happy. I had the pleasure of getting behind the mic with the man with the sustainability plan; Michael Thornton. Michael Thornton is an engineer, entreprenuer and the founder of Carbon Analytics. After close to a decade working on sustainable water, power and projects around the world as a civil engineer, Michael accepted a scholarship for an MBA in social entrepreneurship at Oxford University with a question in mind? How do we transform our global economy to understand and value the natural world it depends on? And how do we do it without relying on government? Carbon Analytics, his company that automates carbon footprinting for businesses and supply chains is the result of that question. Michael and I continue the conversation away from the mic's as we go for a 10 mile run to finish my 30 for the day and ever since I have been spreading his carbon analytics message to my brothers and sisters.
