Having A Generational Mindset w/Abner Suarez & Mike Thornton by Abner Suarez
In this episode, Neil and Jason talk to ‘Mr. Loudness', Mike Thornton, about the issues of television programme loudness and dialogue intelligibility. Why is the background music too loud? Why can't the viewers hear what the actors are saying? And why are films so loud in the cinema? In a comprehensive and compelling journey starting with radio transmission concerns in the 1930s, to the present-day woes of broadcasters and streaming platforms, Mike's accessible and understandable explanations demystify the raft of complex sound challenges that filmmakers continue to face in delivering effective soundtracks. The best sustained success in agriculture happens with a healthy growing environment. The University of Idaho's new Center for Plant and Soil Health in Parma is a welcome addition to the landscape.“The new center is a much-needed advancement,” remarked Margie Watson of J.C. Watson, an onion grower-packer shipper with more than a century in business. She also served as the mayor of Parma. “This brand new, wonderful facility is going to take us to another level. We have to have researchers in agriculture, with this changing world, and they have to have facilities to go and do the research.”“I see evidence that the work we do really does impact the industry,” said Mike Thornton, Professor of Plant Sciences at the University of Idaho. “I see it on a small level with individual growers, but also on a larger scale. For example, our onion industry has adopted drip irrigation over the last decade and a half. … To see that rapid adoption tells me that we're really making an impact.”“The key part is that my knowledge helps the grower and all of our producers reduce the impact of crop diseases on their bottom line,” Juliet Marshall, Plant Sciences Department Head, Professor and Plant Pathologist at the University of Idaho. “{It's an economic and a food safety issue.”Thornton and Marshall said research conducted in Idaho can also assist growers elsewhere in the U.S.The $12.1 million dollar facility encompasses 9,600 square feet and is a welcome addition to the small town of Parma, where the University of Idaho has had a research presence since 1922.
The manufacturing industry's views vary significantly on place-based economic incentives with many believing that these policies lead to winners and losers, with growth in one area coming at a cost to another. There is a lot to be considered about place-based initiatives and whether the policies can ultimately offer long-term economic growth to the whole of the UK. These possibilities and challenges are discussed by RSM and Make UK in their new report called Manufacturing Growth: Building a Competitive Business Environment. Listen to this podcast, presented by Jonty Bloom, and with Fhaheen Khan, Senior Economist for Make UK and Mike Thornton, Partner and Head of Manufacturing at RSM, for the third and final theme arising from their research, on place-based incentives.
The manufacturing industry thinks that regional and national infrastructure has got worse in the last decade and say a lack of good infrastructure is a barrier to accessing labour and skills – holding back key investment and growth for manufacturers. The views come from a major report into the industry by RSM and Make UK called Manufacturing Growth: Building a Competitive Business Environment. Listen to this podcast, presented by Jonty Bloom, and with Fhaheen Khan, Senior Economist for Make UK and Mike Thornton, Partner and Head of Manufacturing at RSM, for more about business's views on infrastructure.

Listen to Mike's powerful testimony as he journeyed through what was an addiction to crack cocaine. This addiction took Mike places he never wanted to go, even to the point where his dad had to pay a ransom to keep him from being killed by a drug dealer. But when he made the first step into recovery, almost immediately he heard from the Lord of how much he was loved by his Heavenly Father because there was already a ransom paid by Jesus on the cross for Mike's life. And suddenly his desire for crack cocaine went away and his new addiction became Jesus Christ. Mike has spent the last 17 years of his life in the ministry and is soon to be completing his doctorate in a theology study. Mike is a man of strong conviction and is determined to live a life that is pleasing to the Lord.
