Was this an instance of sharing the pain in a demonstration of "fairness" by the parent corporation? Also, is that new free-ad-supported Dungeons & Dragons channel part of Hasbro's Entertainment division? If so, then maybe don't get too attached to it. Somewhat related to the layoffs, there's also some new kerfuffle over the use of AI art, but it seems like it could just be a misunderstanding from some folks on the Internet. Finally, we chat about "Tales of the Valiant," nee "Project Black Flag." When Kobold Press announced this new roleplaying system, it was before Wizards of the Coast juked everyone and irrevocably placed the Fifth Edition System Reference Document into Creative Commons. Now that the core of 5E is protected like that, is there really a need for what Kobold Press' own people have called 5E with "a fresh coat of paint." Ultimately, what's their differentiator? What's their argument for us to purchase a new set of books with largely the same rules we already have? We dig into detail on all these during this episode of “The Goblins and Growlers Podcast.” JOIN 800+ GOBLINS ON OUR DISCORD: http://bit.ly/goblindiscord LISTEN, RATE, AND SUBSCRIBE! Hi everyone, this is Jono speaking on behalf of the entire Goofballs & Goblins team. You’ve probably noticed that we’ve taken some time off recently. This is in part due to the state of the world right now, partly because we still haven’t quite figured out remote recording, and partly because of recent events in the TTRPG community. We’d like to take this moment to properly address those events. As many of you may know, Wizards of the Coast, the company who makes D&D, let slip over a month ago that they were still working with Mike Mearls, who they had previously claimed was no longer employed by them in the TTRPG department. For those who don't know, Mearls was involved in enabling abuse within the tabletop community, in addition to further endangering abuse survivors by exposing them to their abuser. We firmly believe- and I cannot stress this enough- that Wizards of the Coast needs to fire Mike Mearls. When we initially wrote our statement regarding Wizards, this was the most recent news. We were still hopeful that they would appropriately and publicly address this failure on their part and work to rectify the situation. It was our belief that once that action was taken we could perhaps continue playing D&D with a clear conscience, and what’s more we planned to use this platform (however small it may be) to uplift and showcase indie creators making D&D content. I recognize now that that belief comes from a place of privilege and naivete, especially after this past weekend. On July 3rd, Orion D. Black, a Black nonbinary former Wizards of the Coast employee, posted a thread of their experiences working for them and the continual mistreatment they received during their time there. If you’ve not seen it or read it yet, their statement will be linked in the transcript for this recording on our website. (https://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1sra9pq) This was the last straw for a lot of people, ourselves included. After reading about the hypocrisy, toxicity, and unwillingness to change that Wizards has shown time and again (not to mention their deafening silence when it comes to #FireMikeMearls), we cannot in good conscience continue to play Dungeons and Dragons on this show. To do so would be to give our tacit support to them, and I speak for all of us when I say we do not now nor will we ever support this kind of behavior. So, what does this mean for Goofballs and Goblins? The details are as of yet unclear, but I can assure you that the Frighty Fellows’ story will continue using a different system as the medium. We have found several options that we will be privately trying out over the next few weeks. Once we find something that works for us as a group, we’ll transfer this story over and get back to bringing you the content of dubious quality that you’re used to. As for the several backlogged episodes that we hadn’t released before everything went down, we’ve decided as a group that we’re just not comfortable putting D&D content into the world anymore. But at the same time, it would be really hard to recreate three to four episodes of actual-play tabletop role-playing, so as a compromise, you can look forward to what I’m sure will be a sizeable and pretty bad plot recap of those episodes from me! We will have those out shortly before we begin putting out new content, which will be all brand-new starting fresh where we as players left off. In the meantime, we appreciate your patience as we figure out our next steps. Hopefully we’ll continue the adventures of the Frighty Fellows real soon.
Here is a short transcript of the announcements from the audio in case you don't feel like downloading it:"Hey, GM Matt here with a couple announcements. Sorry for the sound quality, I'm stuck with a bit of a make-shift setup temporarily.First on the docket is that CoL will be taking a short break. There has been some unfortunate circumstances that lead to this but things will eventually get back to a regular schedule.Secondly, because of the situation involving Mike Mearls at Wizards of The Coast, Col is going to be exploring some third party tabletop RPGs in the form of one-shots. These will be one or two episode short stories taking place in the Curse of Lords universe either before the events of the campaign or during the campaign. For more information about what has gone on with Mike Mearls, take a look through the hashtag #firemikemearls on twitter. There's a lot to go through and I don't want to get something wrong. Be warned though that the situation involves abuse.Because of the way Wizards of the Coast handled this, we as a podcast have elected to change to a different system. The feeling is that by sticking to 5th edition DnD, as a podcast we are in a way endorsing the way Wizards handled this situation or at the very least suggesting that it is not important. You're free to disagree with this assessment, and we don't begrudge others for not dropping DnD content. This is a personal decision. So in short, there might be a month or month and a half stretch where there are no new episodes, but we will be back. Thank you for your patience and stay safe!"

This chapter concerns TSR West, an effort by TSR to open an LA office devoted to producing comic books, an effort that failed rather impressively. It is the product of a dozen interviews with professionals from comics, gaming, and Hollywood, and as far as I can reckon, it is a tale entirely untold until now.
E3 2019: Jason Schreier talks to Larian Studios boss Swen Vincke and D&D creative chief Mike Mearls about how the Baldur's Gate 3 deal came together, what it's like to make a video game based on Dungeons & Dragons in 2019, and whether Minsc and Boo will be in the game. They talk about the confusion of D&D spell slots, the "infinite possibilities" in a game like this, and how great role-playing games are made.
