F-Stop Collaborate and Listen - A Landscape Photography Podcast
Finding ways to do more with our photography is something many photographers struggle with. While there's certainly nothing wrong with creating beautiful images to showcase beauty, there are other ways to make an impact. This week's F-Stop Collaborate and Listen podcast guest is conservation photographer and author Amy Gulick. Amy has been on a mission for over a decade to tell the story of Salmon in the Pacific Northwest. On this week's episode, we discuss: Amy's journey as a photographer. The importance of nature to humanity. Tips for conservation photography. Amy's work to tell the story of the salmon. Storytelling and photography. Making a lasting impact through photographs. And a lot more! Other topics/links discussed on the podcast this week: Support the podcast on Patreon, or make a one-time donation on PayPal. Amy's book: The Salmon Way: An Alaska State of Mind. Amy's book: Salmon in the Trees: Life in Alaska's Tongass Rain Forest. Watch podcast episodes on YouTube. Here is who Amy recommended on the podcast this week: Steve Winter. James Balog. Art Wolfe. Britta Jaschinski. Cole Thompson. Cristina Mittermeier. I love hearing from the podcast listeners! Paul and Dan reflect on Dan's epic saga playing through the AD&D Pool of Radiance Gold Box game live in 2022-2023, and dig into the 1988 print publication of the same adventure, Ruins of Adventure. How similar are they? Does this one adventure work better as a computer game, as a tabletop game, or something else? What lessons can we take for converting scenarios between different systems and media? Ruins of Adventure is a Dungeons & Dragons module that was based on the "Gold Box" role-playing video game Pool of Radiance, published in 1988 by Strategic Simulations, Inc. (SSI). Mike Breault stated that TSR chose him, Winter, Cook, and Ward to work on the design and writing for Pool of Radiance, indicating that the material was originally created for the game. However, according to the editors of Dragon magazine, Pool of Radiance was based on Ruins of Adventure, and not vice versa. The plot loosely tracks that of the computer game. Ruins of Adventure contains four short Forgotten Realms adventure scenarios which are connected and adapted from the Pool of Radiance computer game, and take place in the devastated town of Phlan. The adventurers are hired to remove evil forces from Phlan, presumably by killing them. They hear rumor of a Boss controlling them and seek him out. This Boss proves to be a worthy adversary, but in the end the adventurers defeat him. Ruins of Adventure was written by James Ward, David "Zeb" Cook, Steve Winter, and Mike Breault, with a cover by Clyde Caldwell, and was published by TSR in 1988 as a 96-page book. National Geographic Explorers and big cat experts Steve Winter and Sharon Guynup have spent more than two decades tracking big cats in some of the world's most remote wild places. They're now sharing what they've learned about these iconic cats in a fun, fascinating photo and fact-filled book for kids, The Ultimate Book of Big Cats: Your Guide to The Secret Lives of These Fierce, Fabulous Felines. The book shares never-before-seen images of big cats in their environments, including snow leopards, jaguars, leopards, tigers, cheetahs and of course lions. As photographer and journalist, their work has sparked successful programs protecting people and their livestock, so they no longer kill snow leopards in the Himalayas, jaguars in Brazil, and leopards in Mumbai's Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Steve's images of P-22, a cougar in L.A., helped create what will be the world's largest wildlife overpass in California.

Dan & Paul chat with Matt Finch, creator of Swords & Wizardry, about his Revised Tome of Adventure Design! Tome of Adventure Design is a comprehensive, start-to-finish resource for designing fantasy adventures for your favorite tabletop role-playing game. It is system neutral, and can be used with virtually any fantasy game. This book includes random generation tables for almost every step of the design process: locations, villainous plots, designing new monsters, and bizarre environments in strange, unknown planes of existence. Thousands of micro-prompts in the margins add additional brainstorming power to the process, and the book is filled with design advice from award-winning author Matt Finch. "It's over 300 pages of randomly selected jolts to the brain. In the introduction, Finch states that the point of incorporating randomness into your adventure writing is “to deliver cryptic results designed to shock the reader's creativity into filling in the gaps” … Let me emphasize his use of the word “shock” in that passage. It's perfect. The moment when two, three, or more nonsensical, fragmentary, contradictory notions gel into a coherent and fresh idea is shocking. It's revelatory. It's magical. And it's inspiring…" Steve Winter, Designer & Contributor, Dungeons & Dragons for TSR and Wizards of the Coast Get the Revised Tome of Adventure Design hereAnd see the completed Kickstarter page here Wandering DMs Paul Siegel and Dan “Delta” Collins host thoughtful discussions on D&D and other TTRPGs every week. The last two years have created a lot of new scenarios for the world. Particularly, the business world has had to adapt to a lot of adjusted scenarios. Much work has begun to be from home, rather than in offices. This forced IT to change the way they think of their corporate networks to allow for greater variability, while also protecting data. But, the biggest part of industries to be affected by the altered way of thinking has been events, like CES. Our good friend Steve Winter from Brotman-Winter-Fried discusses some of the changes and how to deal with them.Virtual versus physical eventsThe general consensus for businesses has been that virtual events are incredibly difficult and less productive. Even though the overall expense of setting up a virtual exhibit versus a physical one is significantly less expensive, the number of people you interact with is lessened. If you look at it from a pure numbers game, the more people you talk to, the more likely you are to interact with someone who might want to do business with your company or even invest in the product offering. With fewer people, there are fewer chances and therefore fewer successes. However, currently, physical events are not as well attended as in the past. For example, Steve Winter refers to the number 40% for CES 2022. Everything felt like it was at 40% of capacity - the number of exhibitors, the number of attendees, and even the number of media. Some of this is because of personal fears or legitimate medical situations. PArt of our team was forced to stay remote for CES 2022 because of medical situations. Others were prohibited from travel because of international restrictions. We spoke with companies ahead of CES that said they were having to drop out because, even if they could get into the US, they might not be able to go home. How to address the issuesOne of the hardest but most direct is to tough it out. Being in attendance in person is simply the best option. The accidental interactions you have with people on the show floor of an event like CES are unable to be replicated by a virtual venue. Many of the long-term partners we have, such as BenjiLock and Monster Illuminessence, were born out of chance encounters while wandering the show floor with no real intentions. With virtual events, it really comes down to curation and having a very strong plan, which completely eliminates the chance encounter. The second great option is to have a strong PR partner, such as Brotman-Winter-Fried. They can help pick up some of the slack for those who can not attend in person, and enhance the opportunity for great conversations. They can also set up some planned conversations through their existing network of connections. In the past few years, some of our best guests have come to us through some of the big names in the CES PR space - namely Steve and his partners.SummaryTo learn more about Brotman-Winter-Fried or to contact Steve Winter, head to the company's website.Interview by Todd Cochrane of Geek News Central.Sponsored by: Get $5 to protect your credit card information online with Privacy. This week's episode of The Man About Town - Manteca, stars legendary coach and educator Steve Winter. His friends and family say he bleeds green. After talking to coach, I just might believe it. Steve will cry at the drop of a hat, according to some friends and family. To me, and my era, he is as important to sports in Manteca High School as any other legendary coaches name you might hear. Coach Steve Winters, is an MHS basketball coaching legend and another great teacher and administrator who is in out town's Hall Of Fame. I caught up with Steve at his home in Southwest Manteca
“During the time he was on the run, Stark did this Facebook live where he railed against the judges, officials, animal rights, activists. He claimed that together, all of these people had conspired to deny him the right to own and breed exotic animals. He taunted law enforcement. He waved a hand grenade in front of his phone. Keep in mind, he's driving down the highway during this hour-long Facebook live. And he was also saying that he was willing to die for what he believed in.” – Sharon Guynup Sharon Guynup is a journalist, author and a National Geographic Explorer. Her most recent article in National Geographic, ‘Tiger King’ stars’ legal woes could transform cub-petting industry, focuses on the five stars of the docu-series, The Tiger King and what’s happened to them since the show premiered last March. Sharon’s been on the podcast before, the last time was a couple of months before the pandemic and before the Tiger King took over the world. She and her partner, photographer, Steve Winter had spent two years investigating tigers in the United States, for a 30 page piece called, The Tiger Next Door, for December 2019’s issue of National Geographic. It involves the criminal underworld, wildlife trafficking, murder, and thousands of captive tigers living sad pathetic lives all over the USA. America has a serious problem with captive wildlife, and what we’ve done to tigers is cruel, dangerous, and absolutely unnecessary. Since then, and since the Tiger King, much has changed, not only for tigers in the US, but for the majority of the stars of the show. Most of them are either in court, prison, or have had their animals seized or are dealing with a combination of all three. Sharon is a hero for tigers. She has been reporting on them for years, mostly tigers in the wild, until 2016, when her investigation into the famed Thai Tiger Temple for National Geographic published strong allegations of illegal wildlife trade, causing Thai officials to confiscate the 147 tigers living at the temple and shut the operation down. From there, she moved onto to the tiger disaster in the US. Every time one of these owners of roadside zoos and tiger petting attractions go down, the future looks better for tigers, but it’s not over. There are ways to combat the crisis right now. The first is to not participate in any wildlife tourism that includes selfies with wildlife or any type of handling of wild animals, and the second is to get behind and support The Big Cat Safety Act.
Every year during CES, we expose a little bit of inside baseball about how our show or the industry works. This year, we got the opportunity to speak with Steve Winter, president and founder of Brotman-Winter-Fried Consulting. Steve has been a long-time friend of the Tech Podcasts Network team, and we feature several of his clients annually. This year, Steve brought us 5 companies: Cutii, Domalys, Publidata, GoSun, and Clean Air Zone. But, as we have worked together for years, the conversation naturally went to the future of trade shows. With CES going virtual, we experienced new problems. Depending on the length of the lockdowns, there is a possibility of a lot more like this. Different events are planning to address them in different ways. Some are looking to follow CES's lead. Others are looking for virtual equivalents of physical shows. Both have their ups and downs, and only time will tell which works best. Fortunately for us, the way CES decided to handle virtualization worked well. However, exhibitors might have preferred a closer to traditional representation. One thing we noticed was that there was a lot less news during CES 2021. Steve pointed out that, under a normal CES there are around 4200 exhibitors. This year, the number was just under 2000. With fewer exhibitors, you can expect less news. But, we saw more than a 50% decrease. This suggested to Todd that those who were participating were not taking it as seriously as in years past. Steve points out that, with so many unknowns, companies spent extra time preparing their presentations. What a treat to welcome photographer Ami Vitale to the B&H Photography Podcast. Vitale is mustering her high profile as a National Geographic photographer, as well as the talents of eighty-nine other incredible photographers, to raise funds for Conservation International. The Prints for Nature Sale runs until December 10, 2020 and offers gorgeous gallery-quality prints at a very affordable price. Please check this link for more information and to support this worthy initiative. We also speak with Vitale about her career trajectory and commitment to telling the stories of endangered species and the humans around them. We discuss her work photographing Sudan, the last male white rhinoceros in existence, and her incredible series about pandas in China. We also ask Vitale how she bridges the gap (or perceived gap) between journalism and advocacy photography and about her commitment to long-term engagement with the stories she covers. Vitale also addresses the changing dynamics of print journalism and the need to find funding for her projects, and we briefly mention her work as a Nikon ambassador. The dearth of tourism to many protected wildlife parks around the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic has brought conservation efforts to a crisis point and the Prints for Nature Sale, with images by Art Wolfe, Steve Winter, Pete McBride, Alison Wright (all past guests of the podcast) and many other great photographers, is a way that lovers of wildlife and of photography can help. There are more tigers in captivity in the United States than there are in the wild in Asia, thanks to Americans' growing appetites for posing for photos with big cats and their cubs. National Geographic photographer Steve Winter has previously photographed wild cats in places like Myanmar and Peru, but for his latest project he spent two years tracking the fates of those in private roadside zoos across the US, documenting their confinement, maltreatment and exploitation. He says its vitally important for people to understand what is happening to these cats, and the industry for breeding them - which has been bolstered by popular Netflix documentary series Tiger King.

Author of Artemis and The Martian tells me about a special event at the Museum Of Science Fiction. Special shout out to Steve Winter for joining the call.
On this episode I'm joined by executive producer/director, and one of the founding members of Matchstick Productions, Murray Wais to talk about their newest film "Huck Yeah" and how he went from a kid growing up in Seattle with a passion for skiing, to dreams of living in a van, chasing storms, and writing, to meeting up with his future business partner Steve Winter and forming one of the most cutting edge and respected ski film companies in the world. As a kid growing up in the 80s in Seattle, Murray was introduced to the world of big mountains and heavy snow at a very early age. He fell in love with the lifestyle and some of the characters coming out of the brand new world of snowboarding. After studying at a ski academy for a bit, he decided to pursue his love of writing at the University of Oregon journalisms school with dreams of one day following a similar path as some of his literary heroes like Jack Kerouac. But a small detour to Crested Butte to cover a ski competition would set him on a whole new path and the rest is history. During our conversation Murray tells me how things have changed over the years in the world of making ski and mountain bike movies, the current challenges they face in trying to put together a film tour in the world of Covid restrictions, and the advice he gives to young creatives coming up. On this week’s episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we welcome National Geographic photographer Steve Winter back to the program. Winter joined us, in 2016, to discuss his wildlife photography, specifically his work photographing cougars in the hills of Los Angeles, California, and today we will be discussing tigers. Over the past several years, Winter has been working on stories about tigers, initially in Sumatra, Thailand, and India, but most recently in the United States, where there are more tigers in captivity than exist in their increasingly shrinking natural habitats in Asia. The majority of these tigers are pets, are in sanctuaries, or are used as part of small private zoos and tourist attractions. His most recent story for NatGeo, which was honored with a 2020 World Press Photo award, explores this phenomenon—the good, the bad, and very ugly of it. We speak with Winter about the production and research for this series, about photographing the animals, as well as the owners, handlers, and tourists, and the dangers of each. We discuss how he utilized his news and documentary skills, in addition to his wildlife photography experience, and about the gear decisions he made to help bring this story to life. We also dig into the practice of breeding, crossbreeding, and maintaining predator cats for profit and the issues of illegal trafficking, tiger farms, and of legitimate sanctuaries. Finally, we focus on the positive changes that have come from Winter’s many stories on the world’s big cats. Guest: Steve Winter Photograph © Steve Winter for National Geographic

Steve Winter is an American photographer who has photographed wildlife from Cuba to Russia, his work appearing in National Geographic, Time, GEO and more. He was the 2008 Wildlife Photographer of the Year and is also a World Press Photo award winner. He's photographed all kinds of animals but it's his work on big cats he's most famous for, many of which he's now fighting to save. In this podcast, we talk about Steve's love of big cats and his work to protect cat species around the world, including India's tigers and jaguars in South America. He also discusses his early assignments, his iconic photos, getting stuck in quicksand, how great pictures require commitment, including epic long-term shoots, and his close call with death during a wild assignment.
There is a tiger problem in the USA. There are more tigers in captivity in the US then exist in the wild. The number of American tigers lies somewhere between five and ten thousand. We don’t know the actual number because they mostly go unregulated. Sadly, most of these tigers live in cages in private homes, backyards, garages, or in cages in roadside zoos. Many of them are inbred, malnourished, and sick. There is absolutely no reason that this should be the fates of one of the most majestic creatures on the planet. What have we done? And, why are we still allowing it? Journalist and author, Sharon Guynup and photographer, Steve Winter spent two years investigating these questions for a story called, The Tiger Next Door, for December’s issue of National Geographic. If you haven’t read it, read it. Sharon’s story is astounding. It involves the criminal underworld, wildlife trafficking, murder, and thousands of captive tigers living sad pathetic lives all over the USA. America has a serious problem with captive wildlife, and what we’ve done to tigers is cruel, dangerous, and absolutely unnecessary. Sharon and I met in New York in December to talk about her story. The two-year investigation that she and Steve Winter did is mind blowing and absolutely devastating for anyone who cares about wild animals. There are ways to combat this crisis right now. The first is to not participate in any wildlife tourism that includes selfies with wildlife or any type of handling of wild animals, and the second is to get behind and support The Big Cat Safety Act.

The year was 1993, and the movie was "Soul Sessions and Epic Impressions". Thus began the career of Murray Wais and his business partner Steve Winter and their fledgling company, Matchstick Productions (MSP). Every year since then, the Crested Butte based film company wows crowds across North America and beyond, and has grown into one of the most popular action sports film producers in the world. Crested Butte is often shown prominently in their films- from a then unknown Seth Morrison jumping all of the Edge in their first film, to Crested Butte native and two time Olympian Aaron Blunck more recently. From my own personal perspective, it isn't a stretch for me to say that Matchstick movies and their movies constitutes one of the reasons why I moved to Crested Butte in 1996. In this episode, Murray and I discuss a wide variety of subjects: How he got into the ski film business. The athletes he has worked with over the years. How the ski film industry has changed. Why MSP stayed in Crested Butte, rather than relocating to a larger city which may have made travel and production logistics easier for the company. How MSP finds the athletes and the music for their movies. I hope you enjoy this special episode of the Crested Butte is Home podcast. Continuing with our series of conversations from the Eddie Adams Workshop, we sit with National Geographic photographer Steve Winter to talk about his work and career, specifically on capturing images and telling the stories of the big cats of the world. Winter started his photojournalism career in the social documentary tradition and, working for the famed Black Star agency, fate (and fear) pushed him into the world of wildlife photography. He tells us how his path shifted, how he blends photojournalism and wildlife photography and how specializing in one subject has benefitted his career. With many adventures and close calls under his belt, he relates how travel and gear logistics and long stretches away from home can be the hardest part of his job. He also talks gear choices, working with scientists and local trackers and drone photography. Winter’s work spans the globe and includes an ark full of creatures, but he is most recognized for his big-cat photography, which entails long expeditions in mountains and jungles and also the proficient use of camera traps to photograph elusive animals remotely, including the cougar know as P-22, which Winter photographed in its territory—the Hollywood hills. GAME NEWS Greetings from the Summer of Steve sales! I mean the Steamy hottub of the Summer of Steve Winter sale! Paypal Japan leaked that the sale will begin December 18th. 1pm EST! Site was fairly bogged down for the first 30 minutes during the summer sale. but both the web and moblie apps should update and function. Tips from Steve to sale correctly: Historically there are sale items that are discounted “slightly” throughout the sale, daily sale items that are moderately discounted for 48 hours, flash sales that last 8 hours, and community “you must log in constantly and vote” sale items. There are tricks to navigating the maze of sale options. Steve says “hold out for the flash sale items!” you have 48 hours to ponder the daily sales, and traditionally the final day of the sale you will see everything discounted from daily sales, re discounted. Now to discuss the gimmick! Steam will offer the chance to earn a Winter sale badge. You will earn trading cards from voting in the community sales, buying games, etc. You typically need to match 10 specific cards to earn the badge. and the badge will gift you with emoji, profile backgrounds, and various ohhh and ahh items. You can also trade duplicate cards with friends or buy them on the Steam Marketplace. Cards typically sell for .15-.25 cents after the initial rush. Pro tip from Steve. if you want to just buy them, add a balance NOW!. Steam will hold the funds for a few days before you can use them. IE dont wait till the end of the sale! Also use the AIE group trading forum post and your friends list there will also be some sort of game to play.
