The emotional signoff by The Old Left-hander following the final game of the 2004 season and his 31 year broadcast career.
Jeff Brantley loved the Cincinnati Reds long before he was a pitcher for the team and even longer before he started calling games in the team's broadcast booth. When Brantley was growing up in Alabama, he and his dad would listen to famed Reds' broadcasters Joe Nuxhall and Marty Brennaman calling the games while sitting in the family car, coasting up and down the driveway – it was the only way to get decent reception. So when Brantley joined the Reds as a player from 1994 to 1997, it felt like a homecoming, even if Cincinnati wasn't actually home. Hear what he had to say about his career and where the Reds are headed in coming seasons on this episode of That's So Cincinnati.
Major League teams went to great lengths to fill their rosters in the World War II era, including the Cincinnati Reds, who signed a fourteen-year-old junior high school basketball standout named Joe Nuxhall to a contract.

Joe Nuxhall was a famous pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds. He also was a highly popular broadcaster for the club for over four decades. Radio fans loved him for his colorful stories about his career and the game he loved. He was the youngest pitcher ever to pitch in a major league game at age 15, toiled in the minors, and then became a stalwart part of the Reds' pitching staff. Later, he remained batting practice pitcher while holding his place in the broadcast booth. All the time he was collecting stories of baseball, life, and broadcasting. Those stories have been compiled and shared in a new book, “Joe Nuxhall: The Old Lefthander & Me”, written by author, journalist, and long-time media critic John Kiesewetter. You don't have to be a baseball fan to like the book, according to Kiesewetter. Many of the stories share conversations about life in general and being a sports broadcaster. Nuxhall was beloved by his teammates, his broadcast colleagues, and Reds' fans. He also was beloved by his hometown Hamilton, Ohio where he resided until his death in 2007. Listen as Kiesewetter shares some of the stories with us and talks about his book.

Today's game is brought to you by - www.FranchisingConnection.com , book a free consultation today to see if they can help you find the perfect business. On April 23, 1964, At Colt Stadium Ken Johnson of the Houston Colt .45s becomes the first major leaguer to hurl a nine-inning no-hitter and lose the game. The knuckleballing right-hander goes down to defeat, 1-0. Johnson throws widely on Pete Rose’s bunt attempt, and Rose was allowed to take second base and after a ground out, Second baseman Nellie Fox, usually a reliable defensive player, commits a critical run-scoring error on Vada Pinson’s groundball. Joe Nuxhall, did his part for the Reds, he came out for the bottom of the ninth, and got the first two outs quickly. Pete Runnels grounded the first for what should have been the third out, but Deron Johnson misplayed the ball. Houston was unable to take advantage of that second life, however, as Nuxhall struck out John Weekly to end the game. 1964 | April 23 | Cincinnati Reds | Colt Stadium | Houston Colt 45's | Joe Nuxhall | Ken Johnson | Nellie Fox | Pete Rose | Vada Pinson

My guest on this episode of Nobody’s Safe w/Brady Laber is Rich Linville who each night writes the Scoreboard Stumper question during Cincinnati Reds games at Great American Ballpark. Rich grew up a Reds fan on the Eastside of Cincinnati during the 1970s. He attributes his deep love for the Reds from the radio calls each night by the legendary team of Marty Brenneman and Joe Nuxhall. Interestingly enough his favorite baseball player was Kansas Royals third basemen and Hall of Famer George Brett. As a child of he 70’s, Rich talks about collecting baseball cards, reading box scores in the newspaper and watching the national game of the week and “This Week in Baseball.” Rich graduated from Anderson High School and later Northern Kentucky University. He interned in the sports department at WLWT Channel 5 in Cincinnati. This is where he was given the opportunities to join the Cincinnati Reds scoreboard production crew. It was 1988 and the Reds has just installed a video board at Riverfront Stadium and initially relied heavily on employees from Channel 5 to help operate the board. As an intern, Rich started as a fill-in and after a couple of seasons was a full-time crew member starting with the 1990 season. In 1991, he was given the full-time assignment of writing the Scoreboard Stumper question. This question was and still is a staple of the ballpark experience at both Riverfront Stadium (later known as Cinergy Field) and Great American. Rich has made this responsibly his own and spends time year-round developing questions for all 81 home dates. We obviously talk about some of the details of how the questions are constructed. This veers off into a conversation about Rich’s appearance on a trivia show that aired on the MLB Network. Rich also has had some great behind-the-scenes stories about his interactions with famous personalities that he comes across at the ballpark. We finish up with some of the great moments in Reds history that Rich witnessed in person at his perch in the Scoreboard control room over the course of the last 33 seasons. Like many baseball fans growing up in Northern Kentucky, Andrew was influenced by Marty Brenneman and Joe Nuxhall calling Cincinnati Reds games on the radio. Andrew got his start working in baseball at the tender age of 14 in the summer of 2005 when he started to cover the Florence Freedom of the independent Frontier League for the OurSports Central (https://www.oursportscentral.com) website. Andrew gives credit and thanks to Freedom manager at the time Jamie Keefe along with his staff especially pitching coach Chris Hook (http://m.mlb.com/mil/roster/coach/116123/chris-hook) and bench coach John Christman for allowing him the opportunity to come into the coach’s office and learn about the game. Brady helped mentor Andrew in the Freedom press box but not without some good-natured ribbing that sometimes might have bordered on hazing. Brady along with play-by-play announcer Jeff Johnson and press box workers Mitch Morrison, Aaron Zupka and Rob Ellington took Andrew under their wing thought the course of that summer and beyond. In 2006, Andrew becomes part of the game day staff for the Freedom while also still writing for OurSports Central. As time goes on, Andrew is finally getting a chance to do some broadcasting, in small dosages, working with both the radio voice of the Freedom Roger Redmon. Though the relationships made working with the Freedom, Andrew is hired by Mike Anderson to work in the sports information department at Northern Kentucky University (https://nkunorse.com) upon enrolling into college. This gives Andrew the opportunity to call soccer games for NKU as a freshman. This is also where Andrew begins to work with John Asalon calling NKU baseball games. Andrew starts doing middle innings for Norse games all the while being critiqued by “Johnny A.” Andrew also recalls his first solo broadcast job was calling high school basketball games for his alma matter Bishop Brossart. Local legend Dave Schabell who founded the website bmustangs.com (http://bmustangs.com) gives Andrew a chance to call games for the Mustangs. As a recent college graduate Andrew begins to work as the radio play-by-play announcer and later on the TV side for the NKU women’s basketball program. He credits head coach Dawn Plitzuweit (@CoachDawnP) and her assistant coach Lynn Plett (https://gomountainlions.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/coaches/lynn-plett/485) for being instrumental in his development during this time. His professional baseball career is starting to get off the ground as well and he begins that journey as an intern for two seasons with the Lexington Legends (https://www.milb.com/lexington/). The Legends were at the time Class-A affiliate of the Houston Astros and Andrew is working under local broadcasting legend Keith Elkins. Also, during this process Andrew begins to shadow Louisville Bats (https://www.milb.com/louisville/) lead play-by-play announcer Jim Kelch (@KelchJim). This spawned a mentorship that was very instrumental in Andrew’s development as a young up-an-coming broadcaster. Andrew’s first full-time job in broadcasting was with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barrie RailRaiders (https://www.milb.com/scranton-wb/) in 2013. The RailRaiders are the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Yankees. Andrew talks about the tough love he received from his boss John Sadak (@johnsadak). Both Curtis Granderson and Derek Jeter spent a significant amount of time in Scranton doing injury-rehab assignments and both were very good to Andrew. He has some great stories about each one proving they were big stars but still were also nice to the people that were still working their way up the ladder. After a brief stop in Bowling Green, Kentucky working for the Hot Rods (https://www.milb.com/bowling-green) of the Tampa Bay organization, Andrew moves on to his current location. For the last six years he has worked for the Indianapolis Indians (https://www.milb.com/indianapolis) in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. Andrew talks about working under the dean of International League broadcasters Howard Kellman (@HowardKellman). We wrap up the conversation talking about Andrew having the call for NKU men’s basketball qualifying for its first ever appearance in the NCAA tournament by virtue of winning the Horizon League tournament. Brian Mayer over the next 3 weeks will be talking about the stages of stepfamily development. These stages were developed by Patricia Papernow, Ed.D. We will walk through the early stages in the first episode, the middle stages in the second episode, and the later stages in the third episode of this series. The broad view of this series is to understand that there are steps that the life of the stepfamily will take and that patience is needed to see them all unfold. We hope you enjoy today's message. For more information and additional resources please visit our website at http://www.theremarriedlife.com Today's Goodies If you have listened to this podcast for any amount of time you know that we talk a lot about patience in the journey that your stepfamily is taking. Sometimes we get so caught in the agony and pain of the moment that it is hard to see through to what is next or what is possible. In this 3 part series we will be taking a look at this journey and what it commonly looks like for most families. This will hopefully give you a good sense of what to expect as your stepfamily matures. In these episodes we will be using Patricia Papernow's 3 stages of stepfamily development as the backdrop for our discussion today. She breaks it down into Early, Middle, and Later Stages. In today's episode we will be talking about the Later Stage. In this stage she further divides this into the chapters: Contact and Resolution. The later stage is what we are all trying to achieve. I am a Cincinnati Reds baseball fan and former color commentator Joe Nuxhall used to say and the end of every broadcast, “Rounding Third and Heading for Home.” This is where we are in this stage. Heading toward to home stretch with victory in sight! In chapter 1 of the Later Stage, Papernow describes a Contact chapter. The agreements have now been made and while things are not perfect, it is like the family has now reached for even ground after climbing from the pit and are positioned to begin the climb up the mountain. Relationships between spouses and children now become sources of positivity and encouragement. More clearly defined roles are now present and so the relationships can now be the focus rather than the issues and disagreements. In the final chapter, Resolution occurs. A new history and a new normal begins to develop. Although some of the children may still not feel as much of a part of the family as others in this stage some acceptance has occurred. Major disagreements like custody arrangements, who will handle expenses has either been resolved or seem less volatile. Check out Episode 120 when we discussed the Early Stages of Stepfamily development which involve Fantasy, Immersion, and Awareness. In the next episode 121 we will discuss the Middle Stage of Stepfamily development which involve Mobilization and Action chapters. So check that one out as well in case you missed it. Just remember to be patient. The difficulties you may be facing you family are temporary. You will move along and some challenges will disappear and others will appear. According to Papernow, stepfamilies who move through all 3 stages do so in about 4 years. The average time for most stepfamilies is 7 years and some can take as long as 12 years. Unfortunately some stepfamilies end in divorce, others can get stuck in the early stages, and a small number complete the whole cycle. It appears that those who complete the cycle, tend to negotiate the early stages quicker. Resources: Patterns of Development in Stepfamilies Thanks For Listening! Pete Rose has become one of the most polarizing and controversial figures in baseball history. But before that, he was the brash and charismatic star of one of the greatest teams in baseball history. And 41 years ago this week, Rose's 44 game hitting streak was snapped by the Atlanta Braves. At the request of Patreon supporter Steve Harmon, we dig into the rise and prime of one of baseball's most over and underrated players. Plus happy birthday to Dick Simpson and Joe Nuxhall.
Most entertainment news is generated on the east or west coasts and not in the heartland. Yet, John Kiesewetter spent 40 professional years at the “Cincinnati Enquirer” and three decades as its “Television Critic” writing everything from local criticism to major features. After his job was eliminated at the Enquirer, his career continues to this day. He is now the TV/Media reporter for Cincinnati Public Radio, WVXU FM and wvxu.org. There he writes an almost daily blog, and contributes on-air interviews to various locally generated radio programs. “I had a great run when newspapers were great, when papers had big features staffs and money to travel,” Kiesewetter says. Travel allowed him access to major celebrities and the latest in entertainment news. But, Kiesewetter doesn’t want just any story. Instead, he focuses on stories he thinks are important to the average listener and reader. That philosophy has served him well. He tells us how he traveled to meet stars as well as talking with celebrities who came through Cincinnati. He has talked with classic comic performers like Lucille Ball, Bob Newhart, Bob Hope, Stan Freberg, Sid Caesar, Carl Reiner, Steve Allen, Red Skelton, Don Knotts, Andy Griffith and Bill Cosby. He also focused on celebrities with local Southwest Ohio backgrounds such as: George Clooney, Woody Harrelson, Martin Sheen, Rob Lowe, Allison Janney, Johnathan Winters, David Letterman and sports commentator Dan Patrick. The list of stars he has interviewed is endless and his stories are captivating. In addition to covering the typical entertainment fare, Kiesewetter started critiquing local newscasts and anchors and he has a passion for sports commentators and play-by-play people such as Red Barber, Bob Costas, Al Michaels, Chris Collinsworth, Pete Rose, Joe Nuxhall and Marty Brennamen. He is currently writing a book about the life of former Cincinnati Reds pitcher and long-time broadcaster Joe Nuxhall. “I think part of my success as a TV/Media writer is my solid news training, so I could cover a breaking story, see a trend story, and write a news personality profile, either on a local or a national level,” Kiesewetter adds. “I wasn’t a real flashy writer, but I was informative as hell.”
