In March 2026, the Scottsdale Art week had some discussions which were really informative. I really enjoyed this part of the programming and I wanted to share it with you. We had a booth there and I gave a lecture on Maynard Dixon and Ed Mell, but there were some other lovely panels/lectures that we recorded, and one of them included Diné weavers, Naiomi and Tyler Glasses. I've been fortunate to get to know them and I'm just so impressed with their creativity. They talked about their upbringing and the influence their grandmother had on their path towards becoming weavers. They speak on the connection between traditional Navajo weaving and contemporary fashion, and how blending utility and beauty is nothing new for the Diné. During the panel we hear about the origin of Naiomi's collaboration with Polo Ralph Lauren and how she was able to bring her brother on to help with a subsequent venture with Ralph Lauren Home. It's really interesting to get their take on how they've grown as a brother and sister team looking at fashion through the eyes of their own culture. So, I felt it was a really insightful discussion and something that you would have missed were you not in Scottsdale during the show, but luckily we are able to bring it to you today. This is Naiomi Glasses and her brother Tyler Glasses on the Art Dealer Diaries Podcast episode 393.
I recently attended and exhibited at Scottsdale Art Week, which was the third week in March. They had a lovely series of lectures, and one of them was with photographer Cara Romero. She's a terrific artist that I have in my personal collection. The Phoenix Art Museum has a big show of her work on display through June 2026 called "Cara Romero: Panûpünüwügai (Living Light)." It's a terrific show and I have been up there twice since it opened. It's very well curated and it's an immersive experience. In this lecture, Emilia Mickevicius, the Norton Family Assistant Curator of Photography at Phx Art, speaks with Cara about the exhibit and about the works in the First American Girl series, Indigenous Futurism series, and her most recent photographic works. They discuss the themes of survivance, activism and ecology, and how Cara weaves these into each and every photograph she takes.Cara has her own gallery in Santa Fe and I highly recommend you go see that as well. It was a wonderful lecture. I really enjoyed it and I'm glad I get to upload this talk. This is photographer Cara Romero and curator Emilia Mickevicius on the Art Dealer Diaries Podcast.
Welcome to the Scottsdale Vibes Podcast, I'm Alicia Haygood. This week we're talking about an exciting cultural event returning to our city this week. Scottsdale Art Week is bringing galleries, artists, and collectors from around the world to WestWorld, and today we're getting a behind-the-scenes look at what makes this international art fair so special. Scottsdale has long been known as one of the Southwest's premier arts destinations, from our galleries in Old Town to world-class museums and public art throughout the city. And this week, that reputation takes center stage once again with the return of Scottsdale Art Week, a four-day international art fair happening March 19th through the 22nd at WestWorld of Scottsdale. The event brings together 120 galleries from 15 countries, along with artists, collectors, and art lovers from across the globe. But what makes Scottsdale Art Week unique is its emphasis on the Southwest — highlighting Indigenous expression, regional influences, and the cultural stories that shape this place we call home. Joining me today are Trey Brennan and Amy Gause from Scottsdale Art Week. Amy serves as the Fair Director and has been instrumental in shaping the vision of this event, while Trey plays a key role in helping bring the experience to life. Let's chat about what visitors can expect this year, the inspiration behind the fair, and why Scottsdale is the perfect place for an international art event like this. Week 44 takes us firmly into the 20th century, with a strong Irish lineup: James Joyce's “The Dead" from The Dubliners, the opening of Ulysses, and Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot.Joyce surprised me—in the very best way. “The Dead” is rich, intimate, and beautifully written, capturing married love, memory, and Dublin itself as if the city were another character. The opening of Ulysses was stranger and more dreamlike, but not impenetrable; I'm no longer afraid of it, even if I'm not sure the whole novel is in my future.Beckett, on the other hand, infuriated me. Waiting for Godot struck me as deliberately empty, a meditation on meaninglessness that simply wasn't for me, even while I understand its cultural impact. This week underscored how much I've grown as a reader: more patient, more persistent, and open to genres I never imagined loving. Eight weeks to go—and I'm grateful for every page.Oh, and the answer to that question? Well, you'll just have to listen to find out.The beautiful videos can be found in my substack post!LINKTed Gioia/The Honest Broker's 12-Month Immersive Humanities Course (paywalled!)My Amazon Book List (NOT an affiliate link)CONNECTThe complete list of Crack the Book Episodes: https://cheryldrury.substack.com/p/crack-the-book-start-here?r=u3t2rTo read more of my writing, visit my Substack - https://www.cheryldrury.substack.com.Follow me on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/cldrury/ LISTENSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/5GpySInw1e8IqNQvXow7Lv?si=9ebd5508daa245bdApple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/crack-the-book/id1749793321 Captivate - https://crackthebook.captivate.fm

Eva Lake studied art history and archaeology at the University of Oregon and painting at the Art Students League of New York. She has exhibited internationally since 1980. As a singer in post punk bands she recorded with Trap Records in the Pacific Northwest. Her day job was in makeup, beauty and fashion and this, plus her studies in art history, have formed the foundation and subject matter for much of her work. For over a dozen years she interviewed other art people on the radio, specifically KPSU and KBOO, and has written about art for various publications including Art Week, Visual Art Source, Preview and the Bay Area Guardian. Lake also curated exhibitions and worked at artist-run and commercial galleries including Lovelake, Chambers Fine Art, Portland Arts Collective and the Russo Lee Gallery. Born in Los Angeles, she then grew up on a dirt road in southern Oregon. A duct-taped banana, a glass-encased tiger shark, a three-meter balloon dog – all selling for millions of dollars. For centuries, people have invested in art and their creators, with modern investors adding these “alternative assets” to portfolios. But global art auction turnover fell by about a third to $9.9 billion last year, according to Artmarket. It's also an increasingly tricky industry to navigate, with many sales private and some high risk, and scams not uncommon. So what are the wealthy buying these days, how safe are these investments, and what should they expect in terms of return? John Lee and Katia Dmitrieva sit down with Betsy Bickar, senior art adviser at Citi Wealth’s art advisory unit. The episode was recorded on March 25, prior to Art Basel Hong Kong, part of the city’s Art Week.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This podcast is a little different because it was filmed on location at Scottsdale Ferrari Art Week 2025. Tony Abeyta is a famous painter, jeweler, and curator, and he assembled all of these modernist voices together for the exhibit "Modernism in the Desert." The artists include: Fritz Scholder, Charles Loloma, Michael Kabotie, Lloyd Kiva New, Paolo Soleri, Ed Mell, and more. There's a group of individuals that all connect to the same time frame of about 1950 to 1970 and they have relationships with Arizona, whether they were born here or the worked here. Tony was kind enough to walk us through the exhibit and speak on the individual works. You see, Tony is such a wealth of information when it comes to art. The exhibit he put together took a lot of time and effort and I'm not sure anything like this has ever been done before, and I don't know if it'll ever be done again.
