I would like to see Texas become the center of the universe for bitcoin and crypto,” US Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said in 2021. In 2024, Republican Governor Greg Abbott said Texas “wears the crown as the bitcoin mining capital of the world.” But in small towns like Granbury, TX, about an hour southwest of Fort Worth, residents are the ones paying the price for Texas' crypto boom. Granbury's 300-megawatt bitcoin mine, which is owned by Marathon Digital, a Florida-based cryptocurrency company, uses a mix of liquid immersion and industrial fans to prevent over 20,000 computers from overheating. Many residents say that it's the constant sound from those fans that has made life increasingly unbearable in their small town—and that their concerns are going ignored by the company and government officials. Soon after emergency response teams scramble into action to address chemical fires, explosions, or other toxic events, attorneys begin gathering and analyzing information either to mitigate corporate risk or to seek remedies for anyone impacted by such an event. Listen to my interview with Edgar C. "Ed" Gentle III and Katherine "Kip" Benson of Gentle, Turner & Benson LLC, about legal activity that goes on in the immediate aftermath of a toxic event, using as a backdrop the recent chemical plant disaster that forced 17,000 Conyers, Georgia, residents to evacuate and many more to  shelter in place as a toxic plume hung stubbornly over the homes of as many as 100,000 residents. Ed and Kip draw on their deep experience resolving this type of litigation -- including the settlement of a 20-year-old disaster at the same location -- to discuss the flurry of activity that unfolds at law firms and inside legal departments within hours of a disaster. They also share the impact on such cases of a recent $600 million court-approved settlement of claims that followed the highly publicized toxic train derailment that occurred in East Palestine, Ohio, in early 2023. This is Ed Gentle's second appearance on the podcast. He spoke with me on Episode 48 titled Medical Monitoring for Modern Times. He was the featured speaker on that subject for an HB CLE webinar distributed on the West LegalEdcenter, then Kip Benson joined him for an advanced level webinar on the Medical Monitoring Tort Remedy. Got a question or a topic you'd like us to talk about? Text me Now!Summary: In this episode, Rudy covers two distinct but equally important topics. The show kicks off with an important news update on the Biolab fire that occurred on September 30, 2024, in Conyers, Georgia. Rudy discusses the impact of the fire, the ongoing investigation by the Chemical Safety Board (CSB), and the legal and environmental fallout from the event. He highlights the company's troubling safety history and how local residents are responding with class action lawsuits.Following the news, Rudy dives into a technical deep-dive on electrochemical interactions in saltwater pools. He explains the principles of chlorine generation in saltwater systems, discussing redox reactions, the role of the electrolytic cell, and the challenges posed by water chemistry variations. Rudy emphasizes the importance of maintaining the correct pH levels and keeping an eye on scaling issues to ensure the efficiency of chlorine generation. He also touches on potential byproducts like chlorates and perchlorates, which can form under certain conditions. In the second half of the episode, Rudy switches gears to discuss leveraging technology for pool service businesses. He covers the benefits of scheduling software, CRM systems, and automation, stressing the importance of adopting digital tools to streamline operations and improve customer service. Rudy breaks down how these technologies can help pool service companies stay competitive, enhance communication, and optimize their workflows for future growth.Key Takeaways:Biolab Fire Update: On September 30, 2024, a fire at the Biolab factory in Conyers, Georgia, led to toxic gas being released, forcing over 90,000 residents to shelter in place. GEORGIA OFFICIAL DIES FOLLOWING TESIMONY ON BIOLAB FIRE. POTENTIAL EXPLOSIVES FOUND IN KNOXVILLE PROMPT LARGE EVACUATION.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-France: Unrest has been reported in the vicinity of Cavaillon, following insurgent attacks on local authorities overnight. Several police vehicles were burned following local reports of counter-narcotics investigations in the area. AC: Local unconfirmed reporting suggests this may be more ethnic in nature, after French police shut down a few well-known drug trafficking operations in the area. However, very few details have been released regarding the identity of the assailants. In Grenoble, similar kinetic actions were reported today following a heist on an armored car in the city center. Assailants reportedly armed with automatic weapons ambushed a cash transit van, before fleeing the scene. AC: Again, very little information has been released regarding this incident, or the status of the investigation. Photos of the burning van have circulated on social media, but the success of the thieves is unknown.-HomeFront-Georgia: Yesterday, one of the governmental officials that was involved with the investigation into the recent BioLab fire in Conyers died unexpectedly during a round of testimony regarding this incident. Rockdale County Soil and Water Conservation Supervisor Kenny Johnson reportedly collapsed in a hallway at the State Capitol after reporting a shortness of breath amid a break in proceedings. He was taken to a local hospital where he later died.Tennessee: This afternoon local authorities in Knoxville have issued an evacuation order for many residents in the vicinity of Mynderse Avenue, due to a potential threat involving explosives. AC: This evacuation zone is centered on a local recycling facility and has a radius of one kilometer, indicating that whatever the threat is, it's very serious and could cause significant damage. Local authorities initially claimed the response was a HAZMAT situation, but the most recent information from the Knoxville PD indicates a box possibly containing explosives was found. The investigation is currently ongoing as EOD personnel attempt to render the possible device safe.Florida: Hurricane Milton made landfall last night as a Category 3 hurricane after rapidly losing strength. The storm narrowly missed Tampa for the most part, mostly making landfall to the south in Sarasota. Roughly 3 million people remain without power throughout western Florida, and somewhat routine flooding has been reported throughout the region.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Though Hurricane Milton thankfully collapsed and lost much strength immediately before making landfall, the initial storm bands that arrived before the hurricane caused significant damage as many tornadoes were spawned yesterday afternoon. Initial reports suggest that well over 100 tornadoes swept through the region, causing more significant damage than the hurricane itself in some cases. This is a good reminder of the expediency of evacuations before the storm arrives; mass damage might occur even before the main body of the storm arrives, so waiting until the last minute to prepare and/or evacuate is often Ill-advised.In Georgia, the fire at the BioLab facility has largely been forgotten in the public eye since it occurred, however the scale of this exceptionally hazardous fire has created a substantial health and environmental concern. As a reminder, for several days the fire was burning underneath the rubble, causing significant problems for firefighters trying to overhaul the fire and prevent re-ignition.Analyst: S2A1//END REPORT//

First diagnosed at 27, she overcame the disease with a lumpectomy and radiation. Two decades later, she faced a more aggressive cancer, undergoing a mastectomy, chemotherapy, and long-term medication. Earlier this year, she detected cancer early through self-checks, leading to successful treatment. Crouch emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and regular screenings. Despite her battles, she remains active and refuses to let cancer define her life, viewing it as just one of many challenges she's faced and overcome. STORY 2:  Georgia Gwinnett College receives $400,000 for scholarships from Georgia Banking Company Georgia Gwinnett College received a $400,000 donation from Georgia Banking Company to fund scholarships for exercise science and wellness students. The scholarships, offering up to $2,000 per semester for up to four years, require a 3.0 GPA and full-time enrollment. Bartow Morgan Jr., CEO of Georgia Banking Company and GGC trustee, emphasized the generational impact of this support. The donation also enhances GGC's Corporate Affiliates Program, connecting students with business leaders. The scholarship aids students balancing work and studies, preparing them for diverse careers in health and wellness fields. STORY 3: New State Election Rules Come Under Fire Voting rights advocates and local election officials criticized recent rules approved by Georgia's Republican-controlled State Election Board, claiming they create unnecessary confusion and could delay election result certification. The new rules require county officials to ensure result accuracy, reconcile ballots with voter totals, and hand-count ballots on Election Night. Critics argue these changes could enable election result denial and overstep legal authority, spreading mistrust and burdening election workers. The Cobb County Board of Elections opposed the changes, calling them unnecessary. Additional board meetings are scheduled before the November 5 election. The forum, moderated by Daily Post reporter Curt Yeomans, will conclude at 8 p.m. STORY 5: Petition calls for BioLab to be shut down in Conyers  Residents of Conyers are demanding the closure of BioLab following a recent fire and chemical reaction that led to evacuations and a shelter-in-place advisory. A Change.org petition, citing health and safety concerns, has gathered over 2,000 signatures. The fire released a chlorine-smelling plume, affecting air quality and prompting road closures. Although air and water quality have been deemed safe, residents remain concerned due to BioLab's history of incidents, including explosions and fires. BioLab, owned by KIK Custom Products, has been in Conyers since 1972 and has faced multiple emergencies over the years. MDJ Script/ Top Stories for October 1st Publish Date:  October 1st    Commercial: From the BG AD Group Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.  Today is Tuesday, October 1st and Happy 100th Birthday to President Jimmy Carter ***10.01.24 – BIRTHDAY – JIMMY CARTER*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia.  1.       Judge tosses Georgia abortion ban 2.       Smyrna Police Officers Shot, Suspect Killed in Burglary at Adventure Outdoors 3.       Cobb, Marietta Schools See Improved Results in Math All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!    BREAK: CU of GA (06.26.24 CU OF GA FREE CHECKING_REV_FINAL) STORY 1:  Judge tosses Georgia abortion ban A Fulton County judge has overturned Georgia's "heartbeat" law, which banned abortions after six weeks, citing it as unconstitutional. Judge Robert McBurney emphasized women's rights to control their bodies without government interference. The law, passed in 2019, was blocked until 2022 after Roe v. Wade was overturned. The case, challenged by SisterSong, saw McBurney's initial ruling in 2022 overturned by the Georgia Supreme Court, but he reaffirmed his decision Monday. The ruling reverts abortion rights to pre-2019 standards, allowing abortions up to 23-24 weeks. The issue remains contentious in the presidential election, with differing views from candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. STORY 2:     Smyrna Police Officers Shot, Suspect Killed in Burglary at Adventure Outdoors Two Smyrna Police officers were injured, and a suspect was killed during a burglary at Adventure Outdoors. The incident occurred late Friday night when officers attempted to arrest 21-year-old Emilio Aguilar, who fired a rifle, injuring two officers in the leg. Both officers are in stable condition, with one still hospitalized. Three Cobb Police officers, arriving just before the shooting, returned fire, killing Aguilar. No Cobb officers were injured. The GBI is investigating, and the case will be reviewed by the Cobb County District Attorney. Adventure Outdoors expressed support for the officers and their families. STORY 3:  Cobb, Marietta Schools See Improved Results in Math The 2023-2024 Georgia Math Milestones scores reveal significant improvements in math for Marietta and Cobb County schools. Cobb saw score increases across all levels, while Marietta improved or maintained scores except in third grade. Cobb students outperformed state averages, with Marietta excelling in certain grades. Marietta's Algebra scores showed notable growth, doubling Cobb's and tripling state growth. Both districts surpassed state proficiency levels, with Cobb leading in Algebra. Marietta's diverse student groups, including students with disabilities, also showed strong performance. The new math standards, implemented last year, contributed to these gains, reflecting successful educational strategies. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back Break: DRAKE (Drake Realty (Cobb County) – Truck a Palooza (09.18.24 COBB COUNTY TRUCK A PALOOZA_FINAL) STORY 4:  BioLab Fire Not Expected to Impact Cobb Air Quality A public safety alert states that chemical levels from the Rockdale County BioLab fire are unlikely to harm most people. The Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency declared a local emergency within a 50-mile radius of the plant. The fire at the Conyers facility, which produces pool chemicals, led to evacuations. The EPA is monitoring air quality for chlorine, but Cobb County reports no detected chlorine or hydrogen chloride. With winds blowing northeast, away from Cobb, no precautionary measures are currently needed, though monitoring continues. STORY 5:  Mableton Cityhood Headed to Georgia Supreme Court A group of Mableton residents is challenging the constitutionality of the city's establishment in the Georgia Supreme Court. The lawsuit, initially dismissed in Cobb County Superior Court, argues that House Bill 839, which created Mableton and community improvement districts (CIDs), violates the state's single subject rule. The plaintiffs claim the bill improperly combines two distinct government entities. Despite the dismissal, the residents have appealed, with oral arguments set for November 6. Mableton Mayor Michael Owens expressed confidence in the city's legal standing, emphasizing the focus on progressing despite the legal challenge. We'll be back in a moment    Break: Ingles Markets (Cereal Options) 1 STORY 6:  C-130Js to be Used as 'Hurricane Hunters' Lockheed Martin's C-130J Hercules aircraft will be used by NOAA as "hurricane hunters," serving as flying laboratories for hurricane and environmental research. Two specially-built C-130Js will join NOAA's fleet by 2030, aiding in hurricane forecasting, tornado research, atmospheric studies, and more. These aircraft improve hurricane track accuracy by over 15% and intensity forecasts by at least 10%. Funded partly by the 2023 Disaster Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, the C-130Js will be based in Lakeland, Florida, enhancing NOAA's data-gathering capabilities for extreme weather and climate research. STORY 7:    The Battery Atlanta's 2024 Holiday Festivities The Battery Atlanta's holiday celebrations begin with a Tree Lighting ceremony on November 30, featuring entertainment and a visit from Santa. Santa will be available for visits at his Post Office from November 22 to December 24, where families can take photos and drop off letters. The Holiday Market will showcase diverse local businesses. //The Wire//1830Z September 30, 2024////PRIORITY////BLUF: HURRICANE DAMAGE IN SOUTHEASTERN US CATASTROPHIC. DOCKWORKER UNION STRIKE TO BEGIN TOMORROW, SHUTTING DOWN MOST EAST COAST PORTS.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------HomeFront-USA: A nationwide Verizon outage was reported this morning, affecting most of the United States. AC: As cellular communications have been strained due to the increased demand throughout the southeast, localized outages have been reported. The cause of this national outage has not been disclosed however, and is possibly unrelated to storm damage. The widespread telecoms issues throughout the southeast already present an exceptionally vulnerable target for malign actors, both foreign and domestic.Throughout the East Coast, the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) labor union has voted to conduct the first total port strike since 1977, starting Tuesday, October 1. Most high-risk rail freight has already been stopped as of last week, so as to avoid HAZMAT or other lootable materials being stuck on the track due to the labor strike. On the west coast, land-based freight is already overwhelmed as cargo operations shift to trucks, of which there are not enough to mitigate the impacts to freight operations. As such long lines and processing times are being reported around the country at every major logistics hub.AC: The impact that this labor strike will have on logistics will without question be catastrophic due to the devastated American southeast. If this goes forward, the logistical problems already in play will likely result in a near-total breakdown of most cargo operations throughout the eastern United States. East coast ports being shut down, with union members picketing, combined with the apocalyptic damage reported in the southeast, presents a clear and present danger to national security.Southeastern US: Devastation from Hurricane Helene remains at historic levels due to the sheer scale of the disaster. Potentially thousands remain missing, and NCDOT authorities continue to urge everyone to consider all roads in western NC closed until further notice, even interstates or major highways. Asheville is the largest metropolitan center that has suffered severe damage, largely due to all roads into and out of the city being blocked or unnavigable for most vehicles. Looting has also been reported throughout most of the flood damaged regions.Florida: The city of Okeechobee is under a state of defacto martial law as the Chief of Police Donald Hagan signs a Local State of Emergency declaration nullifying the 2nd Amendment. The possession of firearms in public and the sale of ammunition has been completely banned. The display of firearms by gun stores has been banned. AC: As it stands in this municipality, this is appears to be a complete and total ban on the possession of all firearms in public. It is unknown as to if law enforcement officials are enforcing this policy or not.Georgia: A major chlorine processing facility caught fire in Conyers over the weekend. This is one of the most significant factory fires in Georgia's history, with plume analysis indicating hazardous debris being deposited throughout the region. Initial reports from local responders indicate that chlorine has been detected, leading to mass evacuations around the factory and a shelter-in-place order for the entirety of Rockdale county. AC: Details are unconfirmed regarding the origin of the fire. However the internal fire suppression system itself may have exacerbated the situation as chemicals have reacted with the water, resulting in either the fire starting in the first place, or at minimum the blaze being more substantial. Haze and chemical odors have been reported in Atlanta, prompting local authorities to recommend the closing of exterior ventilation systems for structures and vehicles throughout Fulton county.Washington D.C. – The White House
