On the latest episode of The Mets Pod presented by Tri-State Cadillac, Connor Rogers and Joe DeMayo look back at a tough week that was for the Mets, and look ahead to the final stretch in the chase for a playoff spot. Connor and Joe feel relief after Pete Alonso's walk-off home run that snapped a long losing streak, and praise the early big league work by young starters Nolan McLean and Brandon Sproat. The guys also go long on the problems at hand, including the veteran members of the starting staff, Kodai Senga trying to find himself in Syracuse, an inconsistent offense, the readiness of Jonah Tong, and the uneven performance of an overworked bullpen. The show then goes Down on the Farm to check in on the minor league playoffs, and goes into the Mailbag to answer questions about the Mets' chances to get the third NL Wild Card, and what their starting rotation would look like in the postseason if they got there. WHERE TO BEGIN!! These last two weeks have given us plenty of reasons to scream, positively and negatively...let's get into it. Sonny throws out the first pitch, MLB launches a new Korean-exclusive channel with MC Johnny Suh of NCT17, and a new documentary about MLB's relationship with Japan called DIAMOND DIPLOMACY will be available soon! In position player news, CC Sabathia has words for Anthony Volpe's haters, IKF returns to the Blue Jays and Kim Ha Seong is already thriving at his new home in Atlanta, Bo Bichette is still on an offensive tear, and Lee Jung Hoo's teammates finally give him a taste of his own walk off celebration. Pitching was a wild ride: Jonah Tong debuts in a huge way, Yoshinobu Yamamoto gets one out away from a no hitter...and then the Dodgers lose the whole game, Yu Darvish lets Fernando Tatis Jr. know how he feels, Bryan Woo does not make it through the 6th for the first time all year, and Kodai Senga is sent down to triple A. And lastly, in Ohtani talk - his casual 48 home runs put him in striking distance of another record, he gets his first W as a Dodger, and the comment section thirsts...for him to hit them in the nuts????
Did you see what happened in Miami over the weekend? A Phillies fan went crazy over a home run ball. I couldn't believe it. But the Marlins and Phillies did right by the young fan who was berated by an older woman in the stands. A terrible situation turned right. (11:00) Trea Turner has a hamstring issue. Same problem he had last year. Uh oh. (17:40) Kodai Senga was sent down to AAA. He's struggled so much since his return from the IL. I didn't think it would happen. (26:00) Bubba Chandler had a horrible start for the Pirates. It was his first in his career after three appearances out of the bullpen. (29:00) Bill Belichick clarified the Patriots ban situation at North Carolina. I said it was all teams. He said nope, just the Patriots. (32:00) Let's do a baseball update on the Dodgers. Shoehi Ohtani stepped up to start as Tyler Glasnow was scratched with a back injury. (35:00) Carlos Alcaraz is a beast. 6th Grand Slam title before turning 23. Sinner had no response. Donald Trump showed up. How fun. (43:00) Angel Reese got suspended by her team for her comments. Suspended for a half? Huh? (46:20) My haircut. Learn more about your ad choices. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza spoke with Keith Raad ahead of the series against the Reds and discussed the decision to send Kodai Senga down to AAA, his timetable for a return, the young prospect who will be taking his turn in the rotation, and the impact of the young arms on the team's push to the playoffs.
The Mets took 2-of-3 in Detroit but left with a bad taste in their mouth with another bad bullpen performance by Helsley. This is what happens when starting pitching can't go five innings. They may ask Kodai Senga to go to the minors for a few starts but he would have to approve that.
The Mets took 2-of-3 in Detroit but left with a bad taste in their mouth with another bad bullpen performance by Helsley. This is what happens when starting pitching can't go five innings. They may ask Kodai Senga to go to the minors for a few starts but he would have to approve that. We also talked more about what type of Long Island crowd we're going to get at the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black. A guy calls in who has a business where he collects golf balls at Bethpage at night. Jerry returns for an update, but first he wonders how the volleyball girls on TV right now can afford to get to Bangkok. Jerry Jones was on Good Morning America talking about being a great salesman. Al Dukes is not happy with commercials on Red Zone this season. The Yankees lost in Houston and the home plate umpire was brutal. Helsley talked about his recent performances not being so great. In the final segment of the hour, Gio tells the tragic story of someone local who passed away.
Hour 1 We get NFL football tonight as the Cowboys play the Eagles. The Giants open with Washington and then play the Cowboys and Gio said they have to win one of those games as they can't start the season 0-2 with two losses in the division. The NFC East could be a top division if the Giants figure out how to get some wins. We wondered how soon Brian Daboll would try to get Jaxson Dart into games. Jerry is here for his first update of the day and starts with a preview of Cowboys/Eagles. Jerry is doing the game on radio with Brian Baldinger, who's in the NFL's ‘mangled hand' club. The Yankees lost in Houston as Devin Williams walked in a run and Doval balked in a run and then threw a wild pitch that brought in a run. Helsley had another rough outing in relief as the Mets lost to the Tigers. Pablo Torre talked about uncovering the Kawhi Leonard situation with the Clippers and circumventing the salary cap. In the final segment of the hour, we talked about the Ryder Cup which starts later this month at Bethpage Black. Hour 2 The Mets took 2-of-3 in Detroit but left with a bad taste in their mouth with another bad bullpen performance by Helsley. This is what happens when starting pitching can't go five innings. They may ask Kodai Senga to go to the minors for a few starts but he would have to approve that. In the final segment of the hour, Gio tells the tragic story of someone local who passed away. Hour 3 Al Dukes did a poll asking if you can watch an NFL game without betting on it, having a drink of alcohol during it or scrolling on your phone. We also talked more about the Red Zone channel having commercials and how much playing time is in an actual NFL game. Dan in Carteret calls about Boomer breaking Imus' record this coming March and Jazz Chisholm predicting a Yankees World Series win. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the called third strike on Jazz that ended the game. He was not happy with the call. The home plate ump had a rough night. The Mets had a rough day in Detroit, especially Helsley in relief. Russell Wilson said mindset is everything for the Giants. Boomer said the Commanders should run right at Abdul Carter to see if he can run-defend. Roger Goodell was on the Today Show and said it's a ‘maybe' as far as Taylor Swift playing at the Super Bowl. In the final segment of the hour, Boomer is getting a lot of requests for interviews now that football season is upon us. Hour 4 Is Andrew Thomas going to play for the Giants this Sunday against the Commanders? We also talked about the season ending injury to Alijah Vera-Tucker of the Jets. Both teams tried to build up their offensive lines. Boomer tells a story about teaching kids in Italy how to play football back in the late 80's. Jerry returns for his final update of the day, but first Boomer told us how difficult it was to shower in Italy in 1987. On PTI, Tony Kornheiser compared Nolan McLean to Tom Seaver, just like Boomer did. The Yankees lost in Houston as Devin Williams walked in a run. The home plate ump had a rough night and Williams paid the price. There are already tailgaters in Philadelphia for tonight's opening NFL game. Jerry is doing the game tonight on the radio. The Moment of The Day: Mark Chernoff's long lost daughter. In the final segment of the show, we gave our pick for tonight's Cowboys/Eagles game.
With just 22 games remaining in the regular season, the Mets continue to fight for the NL East while holding a firm lead in the NL Wild Card race. The offense has been electric across the board led by Juan Soto with the rotation rounding into form thanks to the emergence of Nolan McLean. We discuss what's next in store for not just the club in their quest for the playoffs but for Kodai Senga & Sean Manaea in the rotation who continue to disappoint. BT and Sal discussed the news that Mets pitching prospect Brandon Sproat is in "strong consideration" for a major league start. This potential call-up adds to the growing list of young pitchers the Mets have recently relied on, including Nolan McLean and Jonah Tong. Sal expressed his belief that Sproat will indeed get the start, likely as part of a rotation shuffle that could also involve sending struggling veteran Kodai Senga to the minors. The co-hosts agreed that while the situation is a bit convoluted, the Mets' willingness to turn to their young talent is a sign of a new, aggressive approach to building the rotation, especially as they compete for a playoff spot.
In a heated segment, BT and Sal dissected the Yankees' latest disheartening loss, quickly moving past the umpire's mistakes to focus on the team's deeper issues: a defensive liability in Giancarlo Stanton and a struggling bullpen. The conversation then pivoted to a fiery debate about the Mets' pitching woes, with BT and Sal clashing over who is more of a liability: Ryan Helsley or Kodai Senga. The segment concluded with a lighthearted moment when Hoff revealed that the show's music had been a deliberate trap, catching BT off-guard and proving his co-host's earlier point about getting caught in a tough spot.
In a heated exchange, BT and Sal went head-to-head over who is the most untrustworthy pitcher in the Mets' bullpen. The debate centered on Ryan Helsley, who BT believes is an "unpitchable" train wreck and an absolute bust since being acquired by the Mets. Sal, however, argued that while Helsley has been bad, his high-velocity stuff and past success make him a more valuable project to fix than Kodai Senga, whom Sal would rather "banish" from the roster. Their fiery back-and-forth highlighted the Mets' desperate need for a reliable bullpen arm in a critical moment of the season.
The Mets and a struggling pitcher are at a crossroads
On the latest episode of The Mets Pod presented by Tri-State Cadillac, Connor Rogers and Joe DeMayo cover another crazy week for the Mets as the September stretch run begins. The guys start with a week of highs and lows, which included exciting performances from young hurlers Nolan McLean and Jonah Tong, and uninspiring performances from older hurlers Sean Manaea and Kodai Senga. Connor and Joe also discuss the red-hot Juan Soto, the idea of calling up pitching prospect Brandon Sproat, and also answer Mailbag questions about the rules surrounding September call ups and the future of second base and center field. Sal and BT debated who should get the ball for the Mets in the first game of the postseason. With the team's offense on a historic tear in August, their starting pitching has been a major liability, making the choice for a Game 1 starter crucial. Sal argued emphatically for the rookie Nolan McLean, who has been lights out in his limited starts and, in his opinion, is the only pitcher on the staff who can be trusted in a high-pressure situation. He vehemently dismissed the idea of starting a struggling veteran like Kodai Senga, arguing it would be a "disaster" and an unnecessary risk with the season on the line.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza spoke with the media following the series finale against the Marlins, and Carlos discussed the team's struggles, especially with the starting pitching during this series, what he currently sees from Kodai Senga, and the team's inconsistency.
Kodai Senga spoke with the media following another tough start and discussed the issues currently plaguing him, how he currently feels physically and mechanically, and if he feels that he can rectify these issues prior to the postseason.

Hour 1 Jerry and Willie Colon fill in for Boomer and Gio. The Mets bounced back, despite another poor Kodai Senga start (the new human rain delay), scoring many runs with two outs. Mark Vientos is red hot, and Willie says it's time for the Mets to stack wins; Sean Manaea needs to step up tonight. The game was delayed for 10 minutes because the Phillies complained about parabolic mics. Jerry was impressed with the Mets' response. The Yankees did what they needed to do in a lose-lose series. Andrew Bogusch's first update covers the Yankees' win, Jazz Chisholm's 25th homer, Luis Torrens' 5 RBIs, and Francisco Alvarez's potential rehab assignment. Kodai Senga struggled again. With McLaurin and Hendrickson signed, Micah Parsons is the lone hold-in; Dak Prescott is unbothered, and Jerry Recco believes Jerry Jones will get a deal done. Jerry and Willie discuss paying Parsons with a Cowboys fan and Jerry updates his bat situation (the exterminator was jacked). Hour 2 Jerry and Willie discussed Aaron Rodgers' interview, agreeing he tried with the Jets and expect him to excel in Pittsburgh. Terry McLaurin and Trey Hendrickson secured new contracts. The guys believe the Giants, with Russell Wilson, will surprise people and beat the Commanders. Bogusch provided an update, and Jerry mentioned Willie and Eddie Scozzare considering yoga. The Mets won big, and Cam Schlittler had a good start for the Yankees. Willson Contreras had a dugout meltdown. The hour concluded with a yoga call and a discussion about The Biggest Loser documentary. Hour 3 Willie believes Eddie and Fliegs have untapped athletic potential, but they and Jerry disagree. Jerry wonders what activities people spend a lot on but never master, like golf, with top X responses including sex, marriage, gambling, and skiing. Willie was a bad bowler early in his NFL career. The guys discuss the Jets and Giants' offensive and defensive lines. Bogusch updates on Tommy DeVito being waived by the Giants (Willie and Jerry expect him to be picked up) and plays Rodgers' message to Jets fans. The Yankees and Mets both crushed their opponents. Jerry is concerned about the bullpen tonight if Sean Manaea doesn't pitch deep. LIU is getting paid to play Florida, which helps financially, but Jerry and Willie worry about injuries. Finally, Jerry looks at examples of athletes with one standout season and surprising attendance numbers. Jerry thinks Raleigh, not Aaron Judge, should be MVP. Hour 4 The final hour discusses the Mets' win, Willie's concerns about Mendoza's team, and the Jets possibly claiming Tommy DeVito. Jerry and Willie debate why some college players fail in the NFL and agree not to rush Jaxson Dart. Bogusch's update covers DeVito's cut, the Jets' receiver search, and Yankees/Mets blowout wins. The show also questions Ohio State banning Dave Portnoy, features Willie the Yogi, and concludes with a dessert debate: key lime pie vs. chocolate, and cone vs. cup.
Jerry and Willie Colon fill in for Boomer and Gio, and spirits are high. The Mets rebounded despite another poor Kodai Senga start, who's now the "human rain delay." They scored many two-out runs, with Mark Vientos red hot. Willie and the guys agree Sean Manaea needs to step up tonight. The game was delayed by Phillies' complaints about parabolic mics, but the Mets responded well. The Yankees won their "lose-lose" series. Andrew Bogusch's update covered the Yankees' win, Jazz Chisholm's 25th homer, Luis Torrens' 5 RBIs, and Francisco Alvarez's potential rehab assignment. Kodai Senga struggled again. Micah Parsons remains a hold-in after Terry McLaurin and Trey Hendrickson's new contracts, but Dak Prescott is unfazed, and Jerry Recco believes Jerry Jones will close a deal. In the final segment, Jerry and Willie discuss Micah Parsons with a Cowboys fan, and Jerry updates his bat situation, confident in the "jacked" exterminator.
The Mets bounced back despite another poor Kodai Senga start. He is the new human rain delay. The Mets scored a lot of runs with two outs last night. Mark Vientos is red hot and looking like the player he was last season. Willie says it's time for the Mets to start stacking wins and the guys agree that Sean Manaea needs to get going beginning with his start tonight.

Kodai Senga had another rough outing last night in DC, and neither Boomer nor Gio want Kodai Senga to be the number one guy when the playoffs come. It has to be David Peterson instead. That's if they make the playoffs.
Hour 1 Boomer and Gio are concerned about Kodai Senga's performance and suggest David Peterson as the Mets' playoff ace. Jerry's update covers the Yankees' win over the Rays, the Mets' loss (Senga gave up 4 earned runs, Nimmo left with a stiff neck), "What is Anthony Gallo Talking About?", a bullet through Andy Reid's office window last year, and Sachia Vickery's $1,000 pre-date deposit on OnlyFans. Hour 2 The hour began with a discussion about Tom Brady's golf course venture and his son. Dan in Carteret called to discuss the new Bengals stadium, but instead mocked Boomer's head size. NFL trades were a topic, as was a caller's frustration about not acknowledging Robert Plant's birthday. Another caller questioned why all WFAN hosts vacation in the summer. Jerry's update started with the Yankees beating the Rays, hitting five more home runs. Jose Caballero's ejection and post-game comments were covered. Kodai Senga's rough outing in the Mets' loss to DC was discussed, along with Mendoza's comments. Myles Garrett avoided talking about his speeding ticket, and the Micah Parsons situation in Dallas remained unresolved. The hour concluded with the social media buzz around Cracker Barrel's logo change, with many perceiving them as "woke" due to the new logo and interior changes. Hour 3 We began discussing the Giants' improved optimism this season due to positional upgrades. Boomer stressed the importance of Russell Wilson avoiding turnovers and the defense creating them, unlike last season. Adam Schein will do Sunday highlights on CBS, not the highly paid talent. Jerry returned for an update, but first, someone made him t-shirts with his death-related sayings. The Yankees beat the Rays with 5 more homers. We then discussed the slang term 'NPC'. The hour concluded with a discussion on Phil Mickelson and those who believe he 'ruined golf'. Hour 4 Bubba Wallace in-studio, Boomer compares NASCAR to LIE driving. Jerry's final update: Yankees beat Rays with Stanton's tenth-inning pinch-hit HR. Ohtani hit in thigh by line drive. Jets held a players-only practice, overseen by Aaron Glenn. Moment of The Day: host struggles with 'depth'. Jordan Davis calls in to discuss Cracker Barrel.
Boomer and Gio are concerned about Kodai Senga's performance and suggest David Peterson as the Mets' potential playoff ace. Jerry's update includes Yankees' victory over Rays, Mets' loss to Nationals (Senga gave up 4 earned runs), and Brandon Nimmo's neck injury. Also, a bizarre story about a bullet in Andy Reid's office and a tennis player on OnlyFans requiring a $1,000 pre-date deposit.
The hour began with a discussion about Tom Brady's golf course venture and his son. Dan in Carteret called to discuss the new Bengals stadium, but commented on Boomer's head size. We covered recent NFL trades, and a caller was upset about us not acknowledging Robert Plant's birthday. Another caller questioned why WFAN hosts vacation in the summer. Jerry's update included the Yankees beating the Rays with five more home runs. Jose Caballero's ejection and post-game comments were discussed. Kodai Senga struggled in the Mets' loss to DC, and Mendoza commented on his performance. Myles Garrett avoided talking about his speeding ticket, and we discussed the Micah Parsons situation. The final segment focused on Cracker Barrel's recent logo and interior changes, which led to social media accusations of them being "woke." Are people plain old stupid?
Jerry returns for an update and starts with the sounds of the Yankees beating the Rays as they hit 5 more home runs. Jose Caballero got tossed and he talked about it after the game. Kodai Senga got roughed up as the Mets lost in DC. Mendoza talked about Senga's performance after the game. Myles Garrett met the media and had no interest in talking about his speeding ticket. We also talked about the Micah Parsons situation in Dallas as there seems to be no movement.
(SHOW OPEN): The Mets need much more from Kodai Senga, whose struggles continued in Wednesday night's loss.
NY Mets vs. Washington Nationals MLB Pick Prediction by Tony T. Mets at Nationals 6:45 PM ET—Kodai Senga will start for NY. Senga in nineteen starts carries an ERA of 2.35 with WHIP of 1.23. The right hander fans 22.9% with 11.6% walks. Ground balls are 46.8% with 0.90 home runs per nine innings. A FIP of 4.01. Brad Lord is starting for Washington.
BT put the blame squarely on Mets manager Carlos Mendoza for the team's latest loss, calling out his "scared" and "gutless" managing. The critical error, according to BT, was pulling a well-pitching Kodai Senga with 93 pitches, a move that BT believes was a clear sign of a manager lacking trust and conviction. This decision, combined with Mendoza's repetitive and uninspiring postgame interviews, is symptomatic of a larger issue within the team's coaching staff, which is failing to properly lead a talented but underperforming roster.
Returning from California, Gio and Jerry discuss the Mets' shocking 11-6 loss after blowing a 6-0 lead, attributing it to David Peterson's poor performance and the team's recent struggles, particularly the pitching staff. They express doubt about the Mets' ability to recover and Jerry is skeptical about Kodai Senga's upcoming start. C-Lo's update confirms ongoing baseball losses, including the Mets' defeat, the Brewers' 12th consecutive win, and the Yankees failing to sweep the Twins, despite Giancarlo Stanton's strong play. The Jets and Giants joint practice saw Sauce Gardner and Malik Nabers sit out, while Breece Hall discussed running back contract extensions. Jerry Jones mentioned an experimental drug saved his life. The hour concludes with Gio and Jerry still unable to feel better about the Mets' situation.
Gio and Jerry are back from California and they want to discuss the trip but have to start with last night's Mets debacle. They both woke up and couldn't believe the Mets blew a 6-0 lead. They are surprised and disappointed that David Peterson fell apart in the 4th inning. The Mets are drawing big crowds and playing poorly. The pitching staff has been among the worst in baseball lately. Neither of them can believe how far the Mets have fallen the last two months. Gio doesn't believe they will go on a run and wonders where it ends with the pitching staff. The Mets need a good start from Kodai Senga tonight but Jerry isn't counting on it.
