This season, we're looking at books that inspire the minds of the future presidents in your family. Those kiddos who write carefully-crafted pleas to the Tooth Fairy. Or rally their classes around calls for longer recess. The ones who inspire the family to shirk plastic straws in the new year. Or who would really just like a healthy planet to live on, thank you very much. Theirs are the little voices with the big ideas that stand to shape our shared futures, and we are HERE it. We close this season of ‘Little Voices, Big Ideas' with Sofia Valdez, Future Prez. This 2019 title, written by Andrea Beatty and illustrated by David Roberts, tells the story of what one girl–”just a kid”--can accomplish through summoning the courage to speak up. In Sofia's case, the truth that needs speaking is that a dangerous garbage pile stands to harm the town of Blue Creek. Once Sofia rallies her friends, family, and neighbors around her, a movement grows, and a park gets built where Mount Trashmore once stood. Host Sarah DeBacher is joined by fellow bookworms and co-conspirators in using picture books to change the world, Susan Larson, host of the podcast “The Reading Life”, children's book author and public scholar, Freddie Evans, and philosophy professor and author of multiple books on teaching philosophy to the youngest among us, Thomas Wartenberg. We will also hear from 8-year-old Leah and her father, Thomas, who you may recognize from another episode, recorded back when Leah was just 5. The two of them let Sofia Valdez, Future Prez lead them–and us–through a broad range of topics on what it means to live, young and old, in a country built Of, By, and For the People. Let's do it. Let's go… beyond the bedtime story.

Locher, of the U.S. District Court in Iowa's Southern District, in a ruling Friday halted parts of the law that prohibit books and curriculum with depictions of sex acts, as well as the prohibition on teaching gender identity or sexual orientation through sixth grade.Locher left in place the portion of the law that requires educators to notify parents when a student asks to be called by different pronouns. Locher said the plaintiffs in the case lacked legal standing: Because the plaintiffs involved are already publicly LGBTQ, that portion of the law does not apply to them, Locher ruled.‘Sleeping giant' being razed to clear way for pedestrian-bike bridge in Cedar RapidsThe railway bridge over the Cedar River that has been an eyesore for years is being removed to clear the way for a new pedestrian-bike bridge that's part of the $20 million ConnectCR project.A demolition crew was on the river this week to remove the old CRANDIC Bridge. The charter also describes the duties of the city manager and how citizens may petition for a referendum.Have a good weekend, and Happy New Year!

Mount Trashmore in Virginia Beach is one of my favorite places on Earth. A 60-foot-high mountain made from an old trash dump is a treasure to me. That big, beautiful mountain, surrounded by lakes, playgrounds, skate parks and a winding walking trail, is a source of joy for people far and wide. All at a place built on a pile of trash… Items that were discarded, devalued, and done away with, were used as the foundation for a place that now inspires magical moments. And that’s just it... Mount Trashmore reminds me that we can take the piles of pain, regret and sorrow in your past… The ugly stuff we’d rather throw away… and use it all as the foundation for something beautiful…inspiring… magical. Our trash can become treasure when we change our perspective.

First Exposure to the Outdoors It was as a kid growing up. I grew up in Michigan and we had a choice of several 200-300 foot tall hills which were augmented with trash. Actually a lot of the municipality would dump their trash on top. We actually had one hill called Mount Trashmore, so you know we did a lot of turns and we only had 300 feet to ski so we turned a lot.
