An Triail is set in Ireland during the 1960s and deals with the pregnancy, and subsequent single motherhood, of a young woman, Máire Ní Chathasaigh. She is shunned by her family after becoming impregnated by Pádraig, a married man and a teacher in the local school, and must leave her parish and move to Dublin to find work to support herself and her child. Here she is once again marginalised, first for being a single pregnant woman and then for being a single mother. After her accommodation collapses around her child, she moves into a brothel with a prostitute named Mailí who took pity on her. An encounter with the child's father, where he further rejects her and his child, only serves to make matters worse and the girl takes her own life, as well as that of her child, by natural gas inhalation from her oven. Episode one of our latest series of How to Fall Apart - the putting herself on the page series This series was inspired by a conversation Liadan had with writer Doireann Ní Ghríofa, in which Doireann talked about being asked of her book A Ghost in the Throat, it is very exposing, to write about yourself so honestly, how does hat feel? Doireann explained how she feels that in asking that, what people really mean is are you ashamed, to be be seen so fully on the page. To present such an honest version of the messiness of life. She also talked about writing parts of her own life, her own experience, that she had not seen elsewhere on the page. The two ideas, the experience of writing about yourself, and the recording of parts of your life that you don't necessarily see elsewhere, will be what we explore in this series, as well as telling the story of each writer.

You may know that Doireann Ní Ghríofa is an internationally renowned poet and the 2020 Book of the Year winner. You may not know that she's a massive fan of legendary Clare hurler PJ ‘Fingers' O'Connell.

Doireann Ní Ghríofa has published in both Irish and English and has written six acclaimed collections of poetry. Her most recent, To Star the Dark was described by The Irish Independent as ‘playful, serious, joyful, and moving'. Her book of prose called A Ghost in the Throat received Book of the Year at the Irish Book Awards and had phenomenal reviews across the word. Doireann has also received many other awards and accolades including a Lannan Literary Fellowship, Italy's Ostana Prize, a Seamus Heaney Fellowship and the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature.A Ghost in the Throat dives into all manner of subject from bees and breastfeeding to anatomy and what happens to bodies when they're given over to science. Many scenes are grounded in the minutiae of a woman's life, as Doireann both celebrates and documents motherhood, rearing children and the joy and messiness of it all.  At the heart of the story is one of Ireland's great poets, a woman named Eibhlín Dubh Ní Chonaill and her iconic poem or keen of lament. A Ghost in the Throat is part obsession, part honouring and it is not actually classifyable, which is also part of the appeal. To use Doireann's own term, this is a female text.

In today’s episode, Róisín Ingle is joined by Doireann Ni Ghriofa, a talented poet and the author of an original, evocative and lyrical book called A Ghost In the Throat. This stunning debut is an exploration into Caoineadh Airt Uí Laoghaire, one of the greatest love poems of the Irish language, written by Eibhlín Dubh Ní Chonaill. A fluid hybrid of essay and autofiction, Ni Ghríofa weaves in her own lived experience as she sets herself the huge task of writing a new translation of the 18th century poem. It’s a visceral read, dripping with breast milk, full of the mundanity and the glory of motherhood. She spoke about the poem's powerful resonance and her lifelong obsession with finding out the rest of the story. It’s not often that an eighteenth century poem finds itself in the news, but thanks to the rave reviews and public demand for Doireann Ní Ghríofa’s “A Ghost In The Throat”, this is the situation we are now in. Ní Ghríofa’s work is a memoir in which she considers her relationship with the masterpiece “Caoineadh Airt Uí Laoghaire” and tries to discover the story of its author, Eibhlín Dhubh Ní Chonaill. How can the person who wrote the greatest poem of her century disappear from history? Why do we only know about her in relation to the men in her life? In today’s episode, Darach, Peadar and Gearóidín consider this poem, the world of penal laws, power changes and rivalries that it emerged from and its place in Irish literature then and now. They discuss its female gaze, the attitude to physical and equal love it reveals and how male Irish poets have asserted their names into the life stories of remarkable Irish women. In this episode of The Dublin Review Podcast, Aingeala Flannery talks to Doireann Ní Ghríofa about an essay she wrote called The Dissection Room, which first appeared in NUMBER 73, the WINTER 2018 issue of The Dublin Review. Doireann writes in English and Irish, she has published six collections of poetry. In 2016, she was awarded the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature. She is a member of Aosdána. In August 2020, Tramp Press published her debut collection of prose called A Ghost in the Throat.

The golden age of Irish censorship ended in 1967 when Brian Lenihan Sr introduced a time limit on certain banning orders, leading to thousands of forbidden texts becoming available. Since 1929, a wealth of modern literature and medical writing had been denied to the public by a censorship board which was not required to explain its decisions - Edna O'Brien, Brendan Behan, Aldous Huxley and many others ran afoul of its high hand. However, during this period a wealth of Irish language literature and drama was being produced which slid under the censors' radar, material which still packs a punch today to audiences who feel misled by the notoriety of Lady Chatterley and Holden Caulfield. One such work is the play "An Triail" by Máiréad Ní Ghráda, first produced in 1964 and dealing with topics like religious hypocrisy, abortion, suicide and Magdalen Laundries - all in an Ireland where Disney's Fantasia was banned. In this week's episode, Darach, Peadar and Gearóidín discuss the impact of Ní Ghráda's great work and its relevance today. Darach remembers a less resonant text he studied for his reading, unlocking a wave of '90s memories and Gearóidín reflects on the similarities between the schoolmaster Pádraig and the f*ckboys of 2018.
