Pahua - "Porque Yo (feat. Eva de Marce)," a 2023 single from Nacional Records. As half of the duo Sotomayor, Mexico-based artist Pahua has a rich discography fusing Latin rhythms with electronic music. With her debut solo album, Habita, she spotlights collaborators from across Latin America, like Paz Court, La Perla, and on today's Song of the Day, Eva De Marce. "Well, one of my first interests with this album was to talk about the errancy, about the roots that are connecting us with the Latin American artists," she tells KEXP in this exclusive interview. "So that's why I involved a lot of countries in this album and also to do collaborative and collective music. So I guess it was like one of the most points that I really love to have. They are in there – they're in Chile and Colombia,  República Dominicana, Cuba, Mexico. So it's also like something that has like been opening for me the doors in other places and also to connect with people that, for me, are admirable in a lot of levels and to have these connections that they are not also like in a collaborative way, but that right now they are my friends. So I am doing a lot of stuff with them in the present. And I guess that maybe the music, it's the way and it's the tool, but it's also something to do a lot of other stuff, not only in the music but also like socially and with these people to connect also with their materials and with their projects. So that's for me, like maybe the best thing." Paulina Sotomayor, mejor conocida como Pahua, es una percusionista, cantante, compositora y DJ mexicana cuya trayectoria recorre desde las músicas populares tradicionales de su país hasta las tendencias en ritmos globales latinos fusionados con música electrónica. Su carrera comenzó a los 7 años y en 2011 fundó la banda Jefes del Desierto, de la que fue cantante y baterista, y en 2014 creó el proyecto electro latino Sotomayor, con el que grabó tres discos de estudio y giró por México, Estados Unidos, Centro y Sudamérica y Europa. Durante la pandemia en 2020, surge, Pahua, su proyecto en solitario, una mezcla de música electrónica con ritmos latinos, letras empoderadoras y un mensaje de positivismo y amor propio con el que Paulina consolida su presencia en la industria de la música global. Con cuatro EPs, Ofrenda, Ofrenda Remixes, La Cura y Amuleto, lanzados por Nacional Records, Pahua se ha posicionado rápidamente como pionera mexicana de la música alternativa electrónica folk. Ha participado en conciertos para organizaciones sin fines de lucro globales como ONU Mujeres, Greenpeace y Blue Solutions. He is generally a behind the scenes kind of guy - president of Regalías Digitales (a firm that helps hundreds of Latin recording artists collect their music royalties and license their songs to film and television productions), co-founder of the Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC), co-host of the nationally syndicated public radio show ‘The Latin Alternative,’ former VP of Nacional Records, artist manager, music attorney.  Then again sometimes he’s an in-front of the scenes kind of guy, like with his group Hip Hop Hoodios, which he describes as “probably the world’s only Latino Jewish hip hop group out there”. As Josh tells it, “It’s a group that started as an inside joke” but that ultimately carved out an impressive space within the emerging Latin Alternative space of the early aughts.  Hip Hop Hoodios went on extended hiatus for over a decade, releasing the occasional single or remix but generally staying quiet, until late 2019 when they released “Knishin’ In The Mission” which was followed by last month’s “Turn Back The Clock” featuring Mexican Institute of Sound and Santi Mostaffa. The song and video have enjoyed surprising chart success in the Coronasphere.   In both contexts, Josh is an intensely curious and creative music business guy, with both a sense of humor and a sense of purpose. He’s an artist advocate who fights for artists to receive every penny that they deserve. He has served on the boards of advocacy organizations A2IM (American Association of Independent Musicians) and Voto Latino. Here he talks about releasing new music during a pandemic, how he approaches his collaborations, and the secrets of securing Spotify playlist placements.

Zenet estrena su cuarto álbum Lo que sucede, conviene (El Volcán, 2016), nos desvela los detalles en una amplia conversación con Darío Manrique y además ha grabado para nosotros dos de sus nuevos temas en acústico.El título del disco es una frase muy cubana, contra la contrariedad. Mi trompetista Manuel Machado la dijo en algún momento y creo que es muy apropiada. Es un disco más diurno, sale fuera del humo y las sombras. La sensación de componer es lugares que olían a la noche anterior ha sido sustituida por la frescura de componer en casa.Hay cosas nuevas como la salsa, el tango y detalles de música brasileña. La bossa nova está muy próxima siempre a lo que hemos hecho mi banda y yo. Era fácil servirnos de ella. Hay un discurso en general muy evocador.Además hoy estrenamos algunos álbumes que merecen una especial atención: el trabajo de Miramar, el proyecto de boleros de Reinaldo Álvarez (Bio Ritmo), quien junto a la pianista Marlysse Simmons y la vocalista Laura Ann Singh busca eso mismo: rescatar la era dorada del bolero. Para llegar a buen puerto han planteado con gran acierto el disco como un homenaje a la compositora puertorriqueña Sylvia Rexach. Y el gran Mangy Love de Cass McCombs, una punzante mirada crítica a la sociedad contemporánea con alegatos contra el racismo, el elitismo de algunos gobiernos o la decadencia del sistema judicial, todo ello arropado por una excelente producción sonora. Hoy repasamos la historia, evolución de Nacional Records, los retos e intenciones de la próxima edición del LAMC (Latin Alternative Music Conference) en Nueva York, una cita ineludible para entender el rumbo de la escena latina alternativa. Para ello mantenemos una extensa charla con el fundador del citado sello y certamen musical, Tomas Cookman, quien además es productor, músico y experto en marketing digital. “A veces siento que ha pasado todo muy rápido y otras como si llevara en esto 80 años. Pero me ha encantado cada momento de los que hemos vivido con esta aventura. Y repetiría todo de nuevo.” Con Cookman hablamos de los cambios de la industria en los últimos 15 años así como la evolución de los canales de distribución y las tendencias de consumo “lo que no ha cambiado es el amor por la música. Pero sí el valor de lo que haces, cómo ganar dinero con ello. El negocio se mueve y cambia continuamente. Hay más música, más gente escuchando y más opciones para escuchar más cosas.” Cookman nos explica el porqué del LAMC y su desarrollo y crecimiento a lo largo de 16 años: “El primer año había un gran respaldo de las compañías de internet, estábamos en la era de los puntocom. Además del apartado profesional, tuvimos muy claro el formato gratuito de muchos conciertos desde el primer momento. El New York Times lo nombró como el Sundance de la música latina. Todavía estoy sorprendido del apoyo institucional y artístico que siempre hemos tenido en la ciudad de Nueva York.” Pero sobre todo Cookman alude a lo vocacional y la responsabilidad a la hora de afrontar profesionalmente los retos de dirigir un sello discográfico como Nacional en 2016: “Todos tenemos un soñador dentro, pero tenemos que ser responsables. Hay tanta gente que llega y está un tiempo en la música para desaparecer después... me preocupa cuando veo artistas que triunfan y que por razones muy simples se separan o lo dejan. No todos podemos estar en primera división, pero creo que la responsabilidad y el sentido de la realidad es muy importante en una carrera musical.” “Trabajamos todavía con la emoción. Tenemos el lujo de trabajar con artistas que nos emocionan. Nunca fichamos a un artista pensando sólo que pueden servir para vender discos” Además hoy en Future Beats, y aprovechando la celebración de una nueva edición de Primavera Sound, recibimos a la banda chilena Tunacola. Llegan al festival y a los estudios de la radio secundados por una amplia delegación chilena (Pro Chile y IMI Chile) que pone de manifiesto el excelente estado de forma en el que se encuentra la nueva escena independiente chilena. Tumacola Nos presentan su último trabajo: Todos Los Veranos del Mundo, un disco donde convergen un desatado hedonismo y una producción detallista, elaborada con una sorprendente minuciosidad a lo largo de tres años de trabajo.
