Now, as abortion restrictions rise across the United States, their method is shaping how American women have abortions, too. In this three-part series, hosts Victoria Estrada and Marta Martinez of Futuro Media's Latino USA chart the global, loosely connected network that brought this abortion method to millions of women. Are our media doing enough to sound the alarm? In recent weeks, the government has detained students like Mahmoud Khalil, Rümeysa Öztürk and Mohsen Mahdawi, apparently over their support for Palestine. Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland man who was wrongfully exported to El Salvador, is being held at the notorious CECOT mega prison. We've also seen widespread ICE operations, random visas revoked and ideologically-driven attacks on the funding and functioning of our institutions of higher education. What better way to ring in the first Mental Pleasure episode, than with a riveting conversation with reporter, Julieta Martinelli ?Julieta or known as “Juju”, is an award-winning, investigative reporter and currently the Senior Producer at Futuro Media. She writes about humanity and particularly the way human rights intersect with the criminal legal system and immigration - specifically, for Latino USA, Futuro Studios and Futuro Investigates. Last year, Juju wrote and co-produced Suave, a narrative podcast series about juvenile life without parole. Suave was recognized by the International Documentary Association as 2021's best audio documentary series. Just last year, 2022, her work was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in audio reporting. Juju's writing and reporting has helped lead to the release of two incarcerated men in two separate cases, one of which had spent nearly two decades wrongfully convicted, in prison. Over the years her work has taken her all over the world. She has spent many months alone in big and small border towns, in Mexico, documenting the stories of asylum seekers who are forced to live in dangerous conditions. She has visited overcrowded shelters, prisons and detention centers across the South – to be more specific, in the jungle at the Darien Gap, which straddles between Colombia and Panama, all the way to the soccer fields of Argentina; to begin to understand how something as simple as the game of soccer, helps shape the sense of belonging and identity for those living in such communities.  As you can already see, Juju is far from simple and those who know her would describe her as “simply, THE best.” She definitely is a force to be reckoned with and you'll just have to listen to see for yourself. You may not know who he is - but you should. Under Donald Trump Ron DeSantis rode the MAGA wave to to the governor job in Florida. For some, he's a "smart Trump". For others, a "troll" who, with a series of eye-catching stunts and pronouncements, has dominated headlines and is now viewed as a serious contender for the Republican nomination in 2024. From transporting migrants to the millionaires' playground of Martha's Vineyard to taking on Disney over so-called "Don't Say Gay" legislation, this is a politician who has weaponised the culture wars to enormous effect. For liberals, he's a cruel, socially awkward bogeyman, to his supporters, a resolute strongman turning the tide against corrosive wokeism. James Naughtie profiles the man who, if he does turn his eye to The White House, may have to take the gloves off with the man who many say made him - Donald Trump. This week, Futuro Media released its first ever-poll of Latino voters and the results offer critical insights into the fastest-growing racial and ethnic group in the U.S. electorate – making up more than 34 million eligible voters. The polling looked closely at the battleground states of Florida, Pennsylvania, and Georgia. In the sunshine state, where Latinos account for more than 1 in 5 eligible voters – it's incumbent Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis who earned higher ratings that his opponent Charlie Crist. In Georgia – Latino's who are about six percent of the state's eligible voters show a preference for incumbent Republican Governor Brian Kemp over Democratic challenger Stacey Abrams. But up in Pennsylvania, it's the Democratic candidates in both the Governor and Senate races with a slight edge.  So what does all of this tell us about Latino voters? To find out we spoke with Julio Ricardo Varela, President of Futuro Media and co-host of the podcast “In the Thick,” and with me is Héctor Sánchez Barba, the CEO of Mi Familia Vota, a non-profit organization that encourages Latino election participation. Journalist Maria Hinojosa and the staffs of Futuro Media and PRX recently won the 2022 Pulitzer Prize in Audio Reporting for the podcast "Suave." For Maria, winning this accolade took years of hard work. Maria is best known as the host of the public radio program Latino USA, a role she's occupied for over 25 years. But before then, she had to navigate newsrooms at CBS, NPR, CNN, and PBS at a time where she was often the first and the only Latina journalist there. As she wrote in her memoir, Once I Was You, that meant having to walk with confidence and believing in her work when, she says, her mostly white colleagues didn't. But, as Maria told me when we spoke back in 2020, the confidence she built while working in media didn't totally translate to other parts of her life. "You know, my marriage almost broke up because of my ego," she said. And as her career became more successful, she told me about the times she says she didn't prioritize her husband and her kids, about the crisis point that led her to reevaluate her role in her relationship and as a mother, and about how, these days, she is practicing listening and self-love. Plus, I catch up with Maria and she tells me about the significance of the award for her.
