During the Vietnam War, a group of courageous women embarked on an extraordinary mission to uplift the spirits of American troops stationed far away from their loved ones. The Donut Dollies. With unwavering bravery, they ventured into war zones armed only with warm smiles. Their story often goes unheard, but not for my guest today, Penni Evans, who left college at the end of December 1969 to find herself in Vietnam by the March of 1970. She was 22.For more information, check out show notes at https://www.battingthebreeze.com/donut-dolliesWe love receiving your feedback - head over to https://www.battingthebreeze.com/contact/ Thanks for listening!
The story of the Vietnam War has been told many times in many different ways. But how often have you heard what it was like on the ground for infantry soldiers walking The Trail - that daily grind of cutting through the jungle in pursuit of the enemy? The unbearable heat, leeches, C-rations, booby traps, ambushes and counter-ambushes. It's a gripping and terrifying story which my guest Robin, a Vietnam Veteran, tells with passion and surprising humour. It's a story that must be told over and over again so that we never forget. Welcome Home, Robin. For more information, check out show notes at https://www.battingthebreeze.com/vietnam-war-the-trail/.We love receiving your feedback - head over to https://www.battingthebreeze.com/contact/ Thanks for listening!
Lassiter grad Cody Rhodes, along with Finn Balor, Carmella, Liv Morgan, and announcer Alicia Taylor of the WWE visited 20 families through the Make-A-Wish program at Universal Studios on Friday. The wrestlers posed for photos, signed autographs, and gave the families a private tour of the studio and access to the theme park. They also invited the families to attend WrestleMania 39 this weekend. Rhodes, who lost in the main event against Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship on Sunday, said helping others with his fame is the best part of his job. He believes the visit to the families was the most important thing he did all week. Vietnam veterans and their families were celebrated and recognized during a commemoration event hosted by the Horace Orr Post 29 of the American Legion at Chattahoochee Technical College. President Obama proclaimed a 13-year period to thank and honor veterans of the war, starting on Memorial Day in 2012 and continuing through Veterans Day in 2025. A $1.45 million contract was awarded to Accenture by the Cobb Board of Commissioners to develop a five-year strategic plan for the county. However, tension arose this week between Chairwoman Lisa Cupid and Commissioner Keli Gambrill as the board quizzed consultants with questions about recommended strategies the county might pursue over the next five years. Gambrill expressed skepticism over the recommended strategies, particularly in relation to economic development, and suggested that the county's involvement in these initiatives should be left to the Cobb Chamber of Commerce. Cupid argued that economic development was a key function of government, and the county could partner with the chamber while retaining accountability to taxpayers And, John Bednarowski checks in with us from Augusta National as the Masters Practice rounds have begun. Marietta's Dansby Swanson, in his debut for the Chicago Cubs, hit three hits, drove in a run and helped Marcus Stroman escape a bases-loaded jam to a 4-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. He was signed to a seven-year, $177m contract and became the first Cub to have three hits in his team debut since September 2019. Swanson admitted the transition to Chicago had been tough, but he was sure he was led there. Faith is an essential part of the Swansons' outlook, and prayer played a significant role in his free agency decision. Swanson's value goes beyond just numbers, and his durability has become a trademark of his game. South City Partners, an Atlanta-based developer, is seeking the rezoning for the mixed-use development, which will include a mix of multifamily units, single-family homes, and townhomes, as well as retail components, and potential for a sit-down restaurant. Monthly rents will range from $1,400 to $2,600 for the apartments, and the development is expected to act as a "gateway to the city." In this heartfelt episode dedicated to the men and women who valiantly served in the Vietnam War, special guest Chief Petty Officer (R) and Vietnam Veteran Mark McGregor sits down with SMA Tilley for an episode inspired by the famed U.S. Navy Seawolves. As a member of one of the U.S. Navy's most decorated units during Vietnam, Mark shares his experiences, discusses the mission of the Seawolves while remembering the sacrifice of Servicemembers who served during the Vietnam War. The Vietnam War has a long history. It was one of the longest wars involving America. Starting in 1955, the war went on until 1975, making it the second-longest war, aside from the ongoing Afghanistan War. Over 2.7 million Americans served during this war In 1973. All combat and support units withdrew from Vietnam following the war, but it continued to have an impact on many of the families and people affected by the war. National Vietnam War Veterans Day is acknowledged on March 29 every year, honoring anyone who served during its 20-year time. Since respect and combat support wasn't immediately given to those who served after the war ended because of the number of deaths, the day was founded in 2017 to finally offer that respect to everyone involved. On Tuesday, March 29, 2022, communities around the U.S. will pay tribute to Vietnam veterans and their families on National Vietnam War Veterans Day. U.S. involvement in Vietnam started slowly with an initial deployment of advisers in the early 1950s, grew incrementally through the early 1960s and expanded with the deployment of full combat units in July 1965. The last U.S. personnel were evacuated from Vietnam in April 1975. Approximately 9 million Americans served during the Vietnam era (Nov. 1, 1955, to May 15, 1975). More than 6 million are still alive. The Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017 established March 29 as the day to pause and commemorate, remember, recognize and honor Vietnam Veterans, former Prisoners of War, those listed as Missing in Action and their families. March 29 was chosen for several reasons. It was on this date 49 years ago that the last combat troops departed Vietnam. It was also on this day, nearly half a century ago, that Hanoi freed the remaining prisoners of war the Republic of Vietnam was willing to acknowledge.https://39238b20c00c2e3c88c8778205f8a4e8.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-38/html/container.html As part of the national observance, the Vietnam War Commemoration is interviewing Vietnam Veterans and their families and archiving these oral history interviews on the commemoration website and via the Library of Congress Veterans History Project. The first episode of Veterans AZ launched on a very special day: March 29 is National Vietnam War Veterans Day, established in 2012 as the one day each year that we specifically honor and thank veterans who served in the longest conflict in U.S. History. Vietnam veterans comprise the largest living group of veterans in the nation, men and women who sacrificed and served with honor, but rarely received a "welcome home." This episode of Veterans AZ features a conversation with Mike Burns, a Scottsdale resident who, in 1965, was in charge of 200 young Marines in the unfamiliar territory of South Vietnam. Also featured is Tom Kirk, Unites States Air Force - a resident of Anthem, Arizona, who flew 67 combat missions over Vietnam until the fateful day when he was shot down, beginning more than 5 years as a prisoner of war in the infamous Hanoi Hilton. A vignette is included that tells the story of Jay Vargas, from Winslow, Arizona, who earned the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions above and beyond the call of duty leading his Marine regiment in Dai Do, Republic of Vietnam. To these brave men and to all our Vietnam Veterans we say, thank you, and welcome home. In this dynamic inaugural episode, Rieckhoff explains the origin and urgency of this innovative new show. He breaks down how Trump’s Wall could jeopardize America’s national security priorities—and how it has now thrust the President into battle with a very unlikely opponent: the Marine Corps. And given the state of affairs in America, even nice guy Willie Geist is angry about something. The beloved host of Morning Joe and NBC Sunday TODAY sits down exclusively with old friend Rieckhoff for an engaging talk about an issue that’s for him seriously outraged. He also shares anecdotes from his life, including meeting Snoop Dogg, impersonating LL Cool J, battling Bravo’s Andy Cohen, Joe Scarborough running for President, and his amazing first car. Rieckhoff takes Angry Americans out into the weird streets of Times Square for a hilarious segment that pulls out the political opinions of people of all backgrounds—including The Hulk and Batman. And the rapid-fire show ends with an inspiring Angry Action focused on recognizing and supporting National Vietnam War Veterans Day. It’s a compelling and fun first episode that sets the tone for what Angry Americans is all about—and you don’t wanna miss it. March 29 is now the official National Vietnam War Veterans Day, set aside to “observe with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities” the commemoration of the war. More important than commemorating a war is to commemorate the service, in some cases the ultimate service, that soldiers gave their nation. For our part, we commemorate with what we know—photography—and on today’s episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we talk about photography created by U.S. servicemen during their time in Vietnam. We begin with David Parks who, in 1968, published a book about his experience in Vietnam, titled GI Diary. The book includes excerpts of the diary he kept and personal photos he took while in the army. Mr. Parks, who is the son of famed photographer Gordon Parks, dropped out of college knowing that he was likely to be drafted. He saw front-line combat and documented his experiences, in text and image, from the viewpoint of an African-American “grunt.” We speak with Mr. Parks about his ability to photograph in such a challenging situation, about the gear he used, how he processed film, if he considered his work photojournalism, and how his diaries came to be one of the first books ever published about the Vietnam War. On the second half of our program, we welcome Kendra Rennick, of The Vietnam Slide Project. When a friend employed her help to organize a collection of photos taken by her late father, a project was born. That project took on a life, and Ms. Rennick started an archive of “slides” taken only by soldiers who served in Vietnam. Many of these images reflect the more mundane aspects of army life, but are a rare glimpse into the lives and concerns of soldiers, some on their very first trip out of the States. We speak with Ms. Rennick about the organization of her project, its future, and the relationships she has developed with the veterans and families who donate their imagery.
