Building a brand is hard work. From choosing a market segment and a name to finding marketing opportunities that you can afford, it takes a lot of time, effort, and money. And it can be even more challenging when you're trying to break into a market as competitive as Las Vegas. Justin Watkins of Battle Born Injury Lawyers has seen his marketing efforts return remarkable profits. Battle Born Injury Lawyers has recovered over $100 million for their clients, including several individual verdicts well over $1 million. Justin has been named one of southern Nevada's Top 150 lawyer every year for nine years running, and in 2016, he was elected to the Nevada Assembly. This week, Justin sits down with us to talk about how he started Battle Born Injury Lawyers and how he uses a variety of marketing channels to maximize his ROI. We also discuss the death of his friend and business partner, Troy Atkinson. Key takeaways Diversify your marketing. Billboards, radio ads, TV ads, SEO, and social media can all work together to get you more conversions and a higher ROI. A potential customer may drive by your billboard, see an ad on social media, and then recognize your name when it comes up in their search for a lawyer and decide to give you a call instead of your competitor. Don't be afraid to make changes in your firm. As your marketing begins to work, you may find that the systems you have in place don't meet your needs with the larger volume of calls you're receiving. Be willing to scrap the systems that don't work for you any more, and set up scalable processes that can sustain this new level of growth. Be grateful for every day. Justin's business partner, Troy Atkinson, lost his life to colon cancer in 2016, but right to the end, he fought for every day he had. Today, Justin focuses on appreciating every day he has to live, work, and carry on Troy's legacy. At a Tuesday afternoon meeting, the Nevada Assembly Committee on Education heard a bill that would require school districts and the State Public Charter School Authority to provide some summer school.
During the Nevada Assembly Committee on Education meeting on Thursday, lawmakers heard presentations on two bills that would give districts more latitude in student discipline.
The Nevada Legislature only meets every other year, for 120 days. That's not a very long time to do all the legislative business of the state, including passing the state's budget. Recently elected governor Joe Lombardo recently presented his State of the State address outlining his priorities, and on this week's episode of Renoites, we are welcoming Nevada Assembly Member from District 27, Angie Taylor. Angie previously served at the president of the Washoe County School Board, and this will be her first term in the Nevada Assembly. On this episode, Conor and Angie discuss her history on the school board and dealing with challenging situations like lawsuits and increasing politicization, how the Nevada Legislature operates from legislation being proposed in Bill Draft Requests (BDRs) all the way to being signed (or not signed) by the governor, working in a divided government with a Democratic-majority legislature but a Republican governor, and much more! You can follow the happenings of the legislature at https://www.leg.state.nv.us/ including tracking BDRs that you may be interested in, and many excellent local journalists will be covering the happenings as the session progresses. Thank you so much for listening, and if you have guest or topic suggestions, please email me at conor@renoites.com If you'd like to help Renoites eventually become financially sustainable and remain independent, please consider signing up to donate as little as a few dollars a month at http://www.patreon.com/renoites This season of Renoites is produced by Conor McQuivey, Lynn Lazaro, and Ember Braun.
Washoe County School District Board of Trustees discussed student discipline and how to fill Board President Angie Taylor's seat after her election to the Nevada Assembly at last week's meeting.

As Speaker of the Assembly in 2011, John worked with his colleagues in both houses and parties to ensure the state budget was balanced, while providing additional funding for education and other essential state services. In addition to his legislative service, John had a 20-year career with the North Las Vegas Fire Department, working as firefighter, paramedic, engineer, captain, battalion chief and retiring as an assistant chief in 2011. As assistant chief, he developed, implemented a comprehensive emergency operations program, and managed 220 personnel and a multi-million-dollar budget. John has also served on numerous boards and in many different leadership positions. Nevada: John Oceguera, former Speaker of the Nevada Assembly, from Strategies 360 chatted with us on September 19 about the upcoming gubernatorial race between Attorney General Adam Paul Laxalt (R) and Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak (D), the legislative races on the ballot, and the issues these candidates are running on. Mr. Oceguera, like many others, believes the gubernatorial will be close and will be very dependent on turnout. We discuss which counties AG Laxalt (R) and Commission Sisolak (D) will likely carry and how a blue wave effects those numbers. Additionally, President Trump’s approval rating in Nevada is now higher than it was when he went into office in January 2017 which may play into the gubernatorial race. We discuss the general trends being seen in these down ballot races including the record number of women running for the Assembly. The Legislature comes back after a year off and Mr. Oceguera expects education issues to take priority in 2019.
