Nikola Kostic is a travel and documentary photographer and film maker based in Indonesia. Nikola moved to Bali in 1998 from his home country of Serbia and fell into photography when his uncle asked him to photograph some jewellery. He quickly found himself as a busy, commercial photographer as Bali transitioned from a sleepy island to a bustling tourist hotspot. Nikola's work is incredibly diverse featuring portraits, food, dance, interiors, cityscapes, golf courses and much more. All of this experience pours into his latest project - making a documentary film about the construction of the first sustainable, zero waste island in south east Asia, which is being developed by his wife, a lady who also builds luxury yachts. I really enjoyed meeting Nikola - he's such a passionate and interesting guy who is a great story teller and a fantastic photographer. The conversation features some ‘not safe for work' language so out your headphones on and enjoy my conversation with Nikola Kostic. Show Notes Thank you to our sponsor, MPB. What is Budget Photography? For many aspiring photographers, the idea of using used or older equipment may seem to limit their photography, however with the right technique, you can deliver photography that competes with top photographers in the industry. The idea of spending a lot of money on equipment certainly brings the perception that your photos will be better, however many photographers in the industry have not even upgraded because they are consistently getting quality photography from older cameras. You don't need the latest and greatest photography equipment to produce stunning photos. With practice and knowledge, you can take your budget-conscious equipment to produce photos many would envy. Consider buying used equipment, become proficient in the equipment you have, and get out and practice.Buying Used Equipment to Start Your Photography BusinessPhotography is an expensive business. One camera and one lens can set you back thousands of dollars. If you include the top of the line or flagship camera and you could spend nearly five thousand dollars or more on just one camera and one lens. For many aspiring photographers, starting out is a challenge because you have not even built up a reputation of being a photographer or even a trusted one. People put a lot of trust in their photographer. For some customers, there is only one shot at getting it right and knowing that they can trust their photographer in an important decision-making factor. So a photographer starting out may choose to buy a Nikon D850 or you can buy a Nikon D810 which is about two thousand dollars less. Some of the DX cameras can produce some high-quality photos for the more budget-conscious photographer. The D7500 has a crop sensor and works well with many lighting systems on the market. The D7500 is a semipro crop sensor camera that can be purchased for just under eight hundred dollars. Many used or refurbished D7500s can be purchased for as little as six hundred. An ideal lens for portraits is the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 AF-S VRII is an excellent choice. This older lens can be purchased for as low as one thousand to thirteen hundred dollars. This lens allows photographers to widen up a frame to 70mm or zoom in to 200mm to completely blur out the background at f/2.8. Essentially you can start your business with a used D810 and Used 70-200mm.Lighting Your SubjectWhile cameras and lenses can be expensive, so can lighting. Being able to properly use light for headshots or portraits can be instrumental in creating images that set you apart from everyone else. A Nikon SB-800 TTL AF Shoe Mount Speedlight can be used to create some amazing photos for less than one hundred dollars. How many do you need? Some photographers will say that they can use one Speedlight, but an ideal option would be using two. One as a primary and one as a rim light. You could probably use a reflector to highlight as needed.Become Proficient at Your CraftUsing your equipment regularly makes you a better photographer. A better photographer will know how to use their equipment in most conditions. Practicing your photography only helps you position yourself and your photography. Knowing your capabilities allows you to know where you stand with other photographers.Want to learn more about how you can generate more leads for your business? Pixel Binning Hey Photo World! First, I would like to start off with the fact that I am no expert on the Pixel Binning subject bur more so I am an interested learner on all things photography. My latest endeavor has been studying up and testing out the sRAW option on my Nikon D810 and D750. For more information on my findings so far with sRAW you can listen to episode 226 here! In my search on sRAW, there were many references to pixel binning and how it should be a much more effective down scaling of resolution to ¼ the size of a traditional full resolution RAW file. At face value, it sounded like a great solution to the speculated sRAW flaws. However, after investigating the difference between compressions with RAW files, sRAW images, and even the compression operations of JPEG images, there seemed to be little evidence that pixel binning offers substantial improvements. Then, I gathered much of my information by reading through multiple blogs and other writings on the subject and here is a list of the sites I read from. Sites: http://www.cloudynights.com/topic/489187-understanding-binning/. http://info.adimec.com/blogposts/bid/42336/Shot-noise-reduction-with-machine-vision-cameras-using-in-camera-processing. https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3922435. http://www.photometrics.com/resources/learningzone/binning.php. http://www.andor.com/learning-academy/ccd-binning-what-does-binning-mean. http://www.olympusmicro.com/primer/digitalimaging/concepts/binning.html. http://info.adimec.com/blogposts/bid/104547/Binning-to-increase-SNR-and-frame-rate-with-CCD-and-CMOS-industrial-cameras. Although, the multitude of information on the subject it seems to be a very technical operation. After ingesting the information I have given thought to the entirety of the subject and feel there are little to no benefits to want to see pixel binning in a DSLR camera CMOS sensor. However, an improvement on the sRAW format or an allowance of an mRAW (medium RAW) equaling half resolution vs the quarter resolution of a sRAW image would be a more appropriate settlement on the RAW size options. Finally, I would be pleased to see Nikon and Canon offer a sRAW and mRAW with a bit depth choice as well. That would benefit many photographers out there. Happy Shooting! sRAW I have been testing out the sRAW option in my Nikon D810 and wanted to know more about it. So like most people I turned to Google and got articles and blogs all about sRAW or small RAW. Furthermore, some bad press kept showing up on the subject. All these photographers out there complaining and ripping the idea of sRAW apart. They go on about how bad it is and how much you lose by skimping out and using sRAW to save a near useless amount of space. Well, it’s my turn to go off the deep end and rant about the sRAW options out there. Again, I did some testing on my Nikon D810 and I will do the same on my Nikon D750 to see how it compares. Ultimately, and like a photographers work, the proof is in the pudding. What do you do with your images? What do you need your images to do for your specific customers and industry? Will you need all the resolution at a later date so why not do it all right now with the max RAW options? You will have to be the judge of all that. Like I say all the time: “know your gear”, and that also goes for know what your gear is being used for. I will admit, this is a fast paced and somewhat confusing subject with a lot of numbers and lingo being used throughout the episode. Bear with me and many even listen a couple times if you want to get all the details. The main 3 things to know are these: 14 bit uncompressed RAW – 73MB 12 bit compressed RAW – 30.5MB sRAW – 11 bit compressed – 27MB Finally, when talking about RAW compression options I love how Nikon states it in the user manual for the Nikon D810: “Uncompressed, images are not compressed; Lossless Compressed, no effect on image quality; Compressed, with almost no effect on image quality.” Makes compression look like a joke. Take it or leave it… everything will be fine. Happy Shooting! Get your FREE business coaching call with Rob! Sign up for one of the last few spots here!

Whats In My Bag part 11 Nikon has been on a role for the past 4-5 years. It seem like they are able to out do the last camera by a 75% increase of awesomeness over the previous. I have to say the fourth and final camera in my bag is a beast and an amazing addition to my setup. The Nikon D810 is a mind blowing 36 megapixels of clean 12,800 ISO with a solid weather sealed build hosting a comfortable fit that makes you feel at home. The ISO isn't as clean as the Nikon D4, D4s, or D5 but you have more than double the resolution of the D4 and D4s sitting at 16 megapixels. I know the vertical grip was great on the D4 I had (frown face) so I made sure to make up that problem with adding the grip to this D810. As a bonus with the vertical grip you can squeeze a few more frames per second out of it. I grew a custom to the 11 frames per second on the Nikon D4 but the D810 hovers around 4.5-5fps... that grip pushes you to almost 8fps. I can live with that; especially as a wedding photographer. I tendt to under shoot most other wedding photographers anyway. What could I really do with 8fps anyway. I LOVE THIS CAMERA!- I feel like this is the camera to help me get over the loss of my Nikon D4 Happy Shooting! Get your FREE business coaching call with Rob! WE ARE BACK and what a trip we had. First we made our way to Poland where we stayed in Warsaw followed by Krakow before flying to Germany for Photokina 2014. Poland was a personal trip where we toured the Warsaw Ghettos and got educated on so many different aspects of WWII. We also used the time in Warsaw to do a hands on with the Nikon D810. There were so many people and street performers out that it made for great street photography. As another part to the personal journey we went and toured Auschwitz which was a profound experience. My goal was not to take pictures but the few images I did capture really told a very somber story.  Next up was Krakow for the evening where the TINDER scene was off the hook. I have never seen so many good looking girls as I swiped right and rarely left. And for the record I did not meet any of them thank you very much. We did run into one pretty scary issue on our way to Germany. Our flight from Krakow to Germany was CANCELED at the last min leaving us stranded for 8 hours in Krakow. But it also lead to one of the most stressful and funny stories of the entire trip. Hear that story at 41:11 to laugh your ass off. Photokina 2014 – Photokina happens ever two years and this year we were able to make the trip thanks to BlackRapid. Without BlackRapid being the sponsor we probably would not have been able to bring you the coverage that we were able to. My goal with the show was to bring you one solid piece of content opposed to chopping it up into 20 videos. Our show recap can be seen below in one consumable video, enjoy.
