It was disappointing draw in Westmeath, however a win this weekend can put it behind us. No better place to turn in on that in Nowlan Park, Kilkenny. Wexford Legend Tom Dempsey joined us to talk about what's gone and what is to come.
The National League action for the Laois hurlers and footballers resumed over the weekend but there wasn't a huge amount to shout about. The footballers promotion hopes suffered a blow when they were held to a draw at home to Antrim, the visitors equalising deep in injury time. We look back at that game and what means in the battle for promotion from Division 3. The Laois hurlers, meanwhile, made the short trip to Nowlan Park to take on Kilkenny and after the heavy loss to Waterford the last day out, showed some signs of improvement here before albeit going down to a 2-28 to 0-17 loss. On a more positive note, the Hewood CS senior football team booked their place in the All Ireland 'C' final while the Laois U-20 footballers had a good win away to Meath in their pre-season John Kerins Cup match. Plus we chat briefly about the Kelly Cup action, including the bizarre 1-3 to 0-1 win for Clonaslee-St Manman's over Ballylinan.
The various storms over the past week have played havoc with sporting fixtures across the country but it's still an incredibly busy period for all sports. Our Talking Sport Podcast is back to chat about this weekend's action which is once again a busy one for a number of Laois teams. The senior footballers are in O'Moore Park on Saturday night where they host Antrim as we look ahead to that game and also chat about what the Fermanagh postponement will mean. The Laois ladies football team have a weekend off after securing a Division 2 semi-final place with a win over Tipperary last Sunday while we also discuss a Leinster schools football success for Heywood. Club transfers, managerial appointments, the glamour of the Kelly Cup and the upcoming championship draws are also on our agenda. Plus, the Portarlington rugby team had reason to celebrate last weekend, there were two young Laois girls playing soccer for Ireland and a Mountmellick man will represent the Irish senior basketball team.
What a busy weekend that was! Three county finals from 2020 and an All Ireland intermediate ladies football semi-final. And because there's so much to talk about, we've split our Monday Talking Sport Podcast out in to two episodes this week - one for football and one for hurling, where Alan, Steven and Damien reflect on the senior and premier intermediate finals. For the football we're joined by Chris Conway to look back on Portarlington's dominant display that saw them beat Graiguecullen 1-15 to 0-7 to win their first senior championship since 2001. We reflect on the early black card for Graigue and the impact that had on the game - but Port were on top across the field and really delivered in style on the big day. Can they now go on and win the 2021 championship, which begins in under three weeks time? Away from Port's manic celebrations, Alan was in Nowlan Park in Kilkenny where the Laois ladies football team were beaten by Wexford in the All Ireland semi-final. The defeat brings an end to an eventful season but was it an opportunity lost to make it to Croke Park for All Ireland final day? Or can Laois regroup and come back stronger in 2022?

LimerickGAA made it three wins from three to move top of the Allianz League 1A. Limerick powered to a 2-18 to 0-15 win over Official Kilkenny GAA at Nowlan Park.
Limerick are "the top one", Is Cody's Kilkenny empire crumbling, what Davy Fitz has done for Wexford Limerick's comprehensive defeat of Kilkenny was the big talking point from the weekend’s Allianz Hurling League action with former Galway boss Cyril Farrell believing that the reigning All-Ireland champions are definitely the team to beat. Their place among hurling's top three has been questioned by some in recent weeks but Irish Independent columnist Farrell rates them as "the top one" after dismantling Brian Cody's Cats by nine points in Nowlan Park on Sunday. Martin Breheny of the Irish Independent and Franke Roche of the Herald also joined Michael Verney on this week's show with Roche lauding the extraordinary exploits of Treaty attacker Aaron Gillane. Breheny also feels that those claiming Cody's empire is crumbling are wide of the mark given the players they are without while the panel also discuss what Davy Fitzgerald has done for Wexford, and for hurling in general. Also up for discussion this week: Clare's inability to close out games, Galway building options and a new role for Cathal Mannion, Offaly going from bad to worse as well as the dream club football final pitting Corofin against Dr Crokes. (In earlier upload of this podcast, our interview with Mark Leibovich had an audio problem which is now fixed - apologies for any inconvenience caused.) It's a cold-weather podcast this morning, as we huddle up and wait for January to pass. To warm us ever so slightly, the leagues are back in the GAA and there's the prospect of this Sunday's SuperBowl on the horizon. We won't be shivering for long. Ian O'Riordan has thawed out just enough from his Sunday in Nowlan Park to come and and talk us through the opening round of the hurling leagues. Brian Cody was cracking jokes after Kilkenny's win over Cork so we obviously have to wonder is anyone going to take this seriously at all, at all. And ahead of the SuperBowl, author Mark Leibovich joins us to talk about his brilliant book Big Game, recounting the past four years of the NFL and taking us inside the mind (and house) of Tom Brady. There will, of course, be a deep dive into Monaghan's win over Dublin in the football league, including some egregious poor-mouthing from the podcast's Monaghan representative. All in your Monday morning Added Time, with Malachy Clerkin and Pat Nugent.
On this week's episode of The Throw-In, Will Slattery is joined by Irish Independent GAA correspondent Michael Verney and Waterford legend John Mullane to discuss Kilkenny's win over Tipperary in the National Hurling League final. It was Brian Cody's 20th national title and possibly his finest ever achievement, as his team of young guns mixed with veterans devoured their biggest rivals at Nowlan Park. The lads discuss whether Kilkenny can carry their league form into the championship and also whether Tipperary can bounce back ahead of their crunch Munster championship clash with Limerick. The Premier County suffered a similarly comprehensive league final defeat to Galway last year and struggled to recover - will it be different in 2018? Also, Michael and John rank their top five teams ahead of the 2018 championship and give their biggest takeaway from the National League.
Wooly is joined by JJ Delaney and Brendan Bugler to take a look back at the weekend's games.
Fitness tests on St Stephen’s Day, life under Dessie, that great All Ireland victory and more.
