"The Number Of The Beast" von Iron Maiden ist eines DER Alben der "New Wave of British Heavy Metal". __________ Über diese Songs vom Album "The Number Of The Beast" wird im Podcast gesprochen: (15:33) – "Invaders"(17:48) – "The Number Of The Beast"(29:39) – "Children of The Damned"(36:29) – "The Prisoner"(38:55) – "Run To The Hills"(47:01) – "Hallowed Be Thy Name"__________ Alle Shownotes und weiterführenden Links zur Folge: https://1.ard.de/iron-maiden-number-of-the-beast __________ Ihr wollt mehr Podcasts wie diesen? New Wave of British Heavy Metal" deutlich vorangetrieben. Send us a textOn this week's episode, we take a listen to another Listener's Pick: Thin Lizzy's sixth studio album, Jailbreak from 1976. It took some time, but by the time they recorded Jailbreak, Thin Lizzy's had figured out their formula and Jailbreak became their breakout LP. Showcasing the tuneful songs of Phil Lynott and the expert twin guitar interplay of Scott Gorman and Brian Robertson, the album is the ultimate combination or power and melody.Lyrically, Lynott tapped into mythos of both Irish folklore and the American west to create his own version of story songs written by the likes of Bruce Springsteen and Van Morrison. Musically, Jailbreak is an absolute blast to listen to, providing future inspiration for both punk bands and bands of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Visit us at www.tappingvinyl.com.

fWotD Episode 2822: New wave of British heavy metal Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Saturday, 25 January 2025 is New wave of British heavy metal. The new wave of British heavy metal (commonly abbreviated as NWOBHM) was a nationwide musical movement that started in England in the mid-1970s and achieved international attention by the early 1980s. Editor Alan Lewis coined the term for an article by Geoff Barton in a May 1979 issue of the British music newspaper Sounds to describe the emergence of new heavy metal bands in the mid to late 1970s, during the period of punk rock's decline and the dominance of new wave music.Although encompassing diverse styles inherited from rock music, the music of the NWOBHM is best remembered for drawing on the heavy metal of the 1970s and infusing it with the intensity of punk rock to produce fast and aggressive songs. The DIY attitude of the new metal bands led to the spread of raw-sounding, self-produced recordings and a proliferation of independent record labels. Song lyrics were usually about escapist themes, such as mythology, fantasy, horror and the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. The NWOBHM began as an underground phenomenon growing in parallel to punk and largely ignored by the media. It was only through the promotion of rock DJ Neal Kay and Sounds' campaigning that it reached the public consciousness and gained radio airplay, recognition and success in the UK. The movement involved mostly young, white, male and working-class musicians and fans, who suffered the hardships brought on by rising unemployment for years after the 1973–75 recession. As a reaction to their bleak reality, they created a community separate from mainstream society to enjoy each other's company and their favourite loud music. The NWOBHM was heavily criticised for the excessive hype generated by local media in favour of mostly talentless musicians. Nonetheless, it generated a renewal in the genre of heavy metal music and furthered the progress of the heavy metal subculture, whose updated behavioural and visual codes were quickly adopted by metal fans worldwide after the spread of the music to continental Europe, North America and Japan.By some estimates, the movement spawned as many as a thousand heavy metal bands, but only a few survived the advent of MTV and the rise of the more commercial glam metal in the second half of the 1980s. Among them, Iron Maiden and Def Leppard became superstars, while Motörhead and Saxon also had considerable success. Other groups, such as Diamond Head, Venom and Raven, while reaching limited chart success, never achieved popularity of the above-mentioned bands, but were a major influence on the successful extreme metal subgenres of the mid/late 1980s and 1990s. Many bands from the NWOBHM reunited in the 2000s and remained active through live performances and new studio albums. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:01 UTC on Saturday, 25 January 2025.For the full current version of the article, see New wave of British heavy metal on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm long-form Danielle.
Kicking off 2025 with an interview with John Gallagher of Raven. They have a new EP coming out on February 14th. It features five new songs and three live tracks, all from different decades. He told me about the songs, and one he said is the heaviest song Raven has ever done. John also told me they're well into working on new music, so it sounds like they have a lot of material ready to go. We discussed their early tours, taking Metallica on the raid, the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and the bands they influenced. As far as the NWOBHM was concerned, that era didn't last long, but it did produce some legendary bands. You can watch this interview on the RIFF TV section of wrif.com to see some of John's classic basses, as he pulled a couple of them out. It's a great way to kick off 2025 on Talkin' Rock!

Welcome to today's episode, where we dive into the explosive year of 1986—a year many consider the greatest in the history of thrash metal. We'll explore the rise of "The Big 4 of Thrash," the decline of punk (as well as hardcore starting to morph into crossover) as the dominant subgenre for disaffected youth, and how metal, especially thrash metal, began to roar into the mainstream. This was a year when Metallica gained significant exposure by touring with Ozzy Osbourne, and just a year after Motley Crue catapulted into the record-selling stratosphere. The "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" had established itself, transitioning from the "new" phenomenon to a major force in the arena circuit in the U.S. and beyond. ### Was 1986 the Greatest Year of Thrash Metal? #### The Rise of "The Big 4 of Thrash" **Metallica:** - 1986 saw the release of Metallica's seminal album *Master of Puppets*, which is often hailed as one of the greatest metal albums of all time. The album's complex compositions, aggressive sound, and critical lyrics elevated thrash metal to new artistic heights. How did *Master of Puppets* influence the thrash metal genre and its acceptance in the mainstream? - Metallica's tour with Ozzy Osbourne in 1986 was a pivotal moment for the band, exposing them to a broader audience. How did this tour help Metallica and thrash metal gain mainstream recognition? **Megadeth:** - Megadeth released their influential album *Peace Sells... but Who's Buying?* in 1986. The album's politically charged lyrics and technical prowess set it apart. How did Megadeth contribute to the evolution of thrash metal with this release? - Discuss the impact of Dave Mustaine's previous association with Metallica and how it shaped Megadeth's sound and rivalry with Metallica. **Slayer:** - Slayer's *Reign in Blood* also debuted in 1986, known for its brutal speed, intensity, and dark themes. Produced by Rick Rubin, the album pushed the boundaries of thrash metal. What was the significance of *Reign in Blood* in establishing Slayer's reputation in the metal community? - How did the album's controversial themes and aggressive style influence the thrash metal genre? **Anthrax:** - Anthrax released *Spreading the Disease* in late 1985 and followed it up with *Among the Living* in early 1987. Although slightly outside of 1986, these albums were critical in shaping their influence in the thrash scene. What role did Anthrax play in the diversification and popularization of thrash metal? #### The Decline of Punk as a Dominant Subgenre **Punk's Waning Influence:** - By 1986, punk's initial wave had largely dissipated, giving way to more diverse subgenres and a shift in youth culture. How did the punk movement's decline create a space for thrash metal to rise? - Discuss how the ethos of punk—its DIY spirit and rebellious attitude—continued to influence thrash metal bands, even as punk's mainstream presence waned. **Anarchy vs. Apathy:** - Punk had often been associated with anarchy and a rejection of societal norms, but by the mid-1980s, some elements of the punk scene had turned towards apathy and malaise. How did this shift affect punk's relevance to youth culture? - Compare and contrast how thrash metal's more structured rebellion and complex musicianship offered a new outlet for disaffected youth. #### Thrash Metal's Mainstream Breakthrough **Metallica and Ozzy Osbourne Tour:** - Metallica's tour with Ozzy Osbourne in 1986 was a significant boost for the band. How did Ozzy's endorsement and the exposure from the tour help solidify thrash metal's presence in the mainstream? - Discuss the broader impact of established metal acts like Ozzy Osbourne and Iron Maiden embracing and supporting the thrash metal movement. **Motley Crue's Success:** - Motley Crue's rise to fame after opening for Ozzy Osbourne in 1985 set a precedent for other metal bands. How did this success pave the way for thrash metal bands to achieve similar mainstream breakthroughs? - In what ways did the success of glam metal acts like Motley Crue contrast with the rise of thrash metal, and how did these two subgenres coexist in the mid-1980s? #### The New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) **Cementing the Legacy:** - By 1986, the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" (NWOBHM) had firmly established itself. Bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Def Leppard were now major arena acts. How did NWOBHM influence the development of thrash metal? - Discuss the transition of NWOBHM bands from new and emerging acts to established, influential forces in the global metal scene. **Cross-Pollination of Genres:** - How did the NWOBHM's success in the early 1980s pave the way for the thrash metal bands of the mid-1980s? - In what ways did NWOBHM and thrash metal bands influence each other musically and culturally? ### Conclusion 1986 was indeed a landmark year for thrash metal, marked by iconic releases from "The Big 4" and significant mainstream breakthroughs. This year saw the decline of punk's dominance, as thrash metal emerged as the new voice of disaffected youth, blending punk's rebellious spirit with metal's technical prowess. As the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" transitioned into established arena acts, thrash metal began to carve out its own place in the mainstream, setting the stage for its enduring influence on the music landscape. "We thought: WE'VE GOT A FAN IN AMERICA! But we didn't think that he had a very American sounding name: Lars Ulrich."Den unge Lars Ulrich blev så förtjust i Diamond Head att han reste till England för att se dem live. The 1999 album Black Visions of Crimson Wisdom by The Hookers is a loud, pummeling rock record that draws influence from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal as well as '80s hardcore and punk. Guitar riffs that would sound at home on Iron Maiden or Judas Priest albums rip while a thundering rhythm section propels the band with hardcore energy, keeping the songs short and tight and the album under thirty minutes. That turns out to be the right move, as the pummeling sound of the band never lets up, and lead singer Adam Neal has one gear - full-throat-shredding-throttle. In this episode we travel south of heaven where Hell awaits to spend seasons in the abyss and reign in blood with our undisputed attitude that God hates us all in the Chri$t illusion. Without divine intervention we see a world painted blood in repentless diabolus musica and tell the story of Slayer's debut album, Show No Mercy. In 1981 Huntington Park California guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman met at an audition and realised they were into the same stuff. Living only just around the corner was like-minded bass player and singer Tom Araya. All they needed to create the loudest, heaviest, fastest and most satany band ever was a double kickarse drummer. Then suddenly there was a knock at Kerry King's door. 16 year old Dave Lombardo had been told there was another long haired disreputable type in the area. So the plucky, pizza delivery man went and introduced himself. The original, the classic and the most persistent line up was complete. We will pick up the story there and tell you how that debut album came to be. The new album from Saxon, "Hell, Fire and Damnation" drops on January 19th, and frontman Biff Byford was nice enough to join me to discuss it, and lots more. "It's a monster title, isn't it?" Biff asked when I brought up the title. That it is! He told me what the title meant, it goes back a long way. "I don't know why we didn't use it before". He spoke about bringing back the 80s on some aspects of the album, even going back to the beginning of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Biff talked about how fast this album came together and why they're releasing it to start the new year, as opposed to releasing it near the end of 2024. There's a reason they decided to get it out earlier, as Biff explained. "It all came together pretty quickly" as far as the album is concerned. Biff said, "The Metal Gods were looking down on us" He spoke about the process of writing and recording the album. This album is also mixed and produced by Andy Sneap, who has worked with the band several times. "It's everything, new music. It's lifeblood." is how he responded to the question of what new music means to Saxon. He said they're always on a quest to write the perfect song/album. He also told me about the song he did with Amon Amarth, "Saxons and Vikings". He talked about meeting the guys and becoming friends with them. "I do like the song, actually...it's a great song". The style of his voice along with Johan Hegg's makes for an interesting sound. Always fun talking with Biff, a great way to close out the year!

In this episode, your intrepid cohosts learn why they need to get literate. "Bible literate," to be exact. According to author and Bible teacher Jen Wilkin, Bible literacy is a vital tool when it comes to apologetics—and "Bible literacy" is not the same thing as "biblical literacy." Biblical literacy means knowing about the Bible. Bible literacy requires knowing the Bible itself, and Bible literacy is part of what every Christian needs to be able to defend the faith. In the process of getting themselves some Bible literateness, Garrick Bailey and Timothy Paul Jones talk with Jen Wilkin about why there are so few women apologists, why Timothy will never write another book about the end of time, and whether or not it's possible for there to be too many extended guitar solos. (Spoiler alert: there is no such thing as too many guitar solos or a guitar solo that's too long.) Jen offers to play xylophone with the rock band Queen, and Garrick reveals a heretofore-unknown secret about Jen's singing abilities. In the segment known as Indiana, Jones, and the Raiders of Church History, the dynamic duo places a domesticated feline into battle against a king's shield. The cat survives, but only because of its longstanding concordat with Old Scratch himself. Timothy and Garrick also learn the word "strapwork," and "Strapwork" would be the perfect name for a New Wave of British Heavy Metal band. ABOUT YOUR HOSTS AND GUEST Jen Wilkin is an author and Bible teacher from Dallas, Texas and the Executive Director of Care, Family, and Next Gen Ministries at the Village Church in Flower Mound, TX. She has organized and led studies for women in home, church, and parachurch contexts. An advocate for Bible literacy, her passion is to see others become articulate and committed followers of Christ, with a clear understanding of why they believe what they believe, grounded in the Word of God. Timothy Paul Jones, Ph.D., is C. Edwin Gheens Professor of Christian Ministry at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He teaches in the areas of family ministry and applied apologetics. He has authored or edited more than a dozen books, including Why Should I Trust the Bible?, The God Who Goes Before You, Perspectives on Family Ministry, In Church as It Is in Heaven, and Christian History Made Easy. Garrick Bailey is a Ph.D. student in systematic theology at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, studying Herman Bavinck and Roman Catholicism under the supervision of Gregg Allison. In this episode we dive into the story behind the debut album by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal's Schizoid Sons of Satan themselves Venom. ‘…a band that was heavier and more over the top than anything anyone had ever seen or heard before, more Satanic than Black Sabbath, louder than Motörhead, with a pyrotechnic show to rival Kiss, and with even more leather and studs than Judas Priest, the ultimate ingredients for the Ultimate Metal Band.'Venom never compromised. Venom played up the Satanic angle and never apologized. They cut their own path and by doing so spawned not just one genre but multiple genres. Heavy music in the 21st century is different if Venom didn't happen. The blueprint this band would follow to the legendary status of metal immortals is all right here on Welcome to Hell. Not many bands can say that about their debut album.Featuring mentions of, Mantas, Abbadon, Judas Priest, Guillotine, Newcastle, Cronos, Alan Winston, Impulse Studios, Neat Records, Katriona Gilmour, Leeds Music Scene, Marshall amps, Geoff Barnes, Jesus Christ, Steve Thompson, Baphomet, METALLICA, Hammersmith Odeon, Rolling Stone, Norwegian Black Metal Sauces https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/the-100-greatest-metal-albums-of-all-time http://www.venomslegions.com/biography/venom-biog.htm https://feralhouse.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Black-Metal_excerpt.pdf
In this episode, Mike and Jeremy are joined by Primal Moon guitarist, Justin Stockton to deep dive into the bands that were influential in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement in the late 70's and early 80's.
This week the lads hop across the pond to do some more excavation of denim and leather… Well, sort of… While it's sort of about the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, we instead visit France, USA, Canada, Japan, and Germany! The NWOBM movement was filled with passionate bands from Great Britain that were poised to take over the world. Most of the A-listers like: Iron Maiden, Saxon, and Def Leppard went on to major success, but bands from around the globe were inspired and aspired to carry the torch of heavy metal in the early 80s. Hopefully, we can help spread the word and sounds for those that didn't quite make it to the same level. What's this InObscuria thing? We all know of New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands like Saxon, Tygers of Pan Tang, Def Leppard and Heavy Pettin' but these bands all put out some seriously melodic arena rock & AOR-styled albums in the '80s. It was a sign of the times and even though some early hardcore fans of these bands may discount those albums that those bands released there is no denying there were some great, albeit slightly "fluffy", moments from these normally rough and tough NWOBHM bands. Tom & Mark dive into a number of these bands and those melodic, keyboard-heavy records that had those bands shooting for the USA arena rock landscape, so hear it all on episode# 47 and be sure to let us know your thoughts on bands that didn't make it into the discussion. Heck, we might need to do a part two to further discus this great phenomenon!
Notable Kerrang! magazine collector Kenny Wright (of The Great Affairs) returns to A-SIDES for Episode 113, this time discussing "The New Wave of British Heavy Metal." Kenny and Andy discuss the roots of "The New Wave of British Heavy Metal", also known as NWOBHM, which includes bands such as Judas Priest and Motorhead. They also touch on several notable bands from within the genre, classic albums, their influence on emerging acts in North America, and quickly changing musical trends. Supreme thanks to Kenny Wright for the fun conversation and also thanks to everyone who listens! Up the irons!

Time for another entry in our New Wave of British Heavy Metal and Funk genres Essential Project! This week we dive into two classic albums from 80s rockers Def Leppard and funk master supreme Bootsy Collins and his backing group the Rubberband. In the early 80s Def Leppard was young and looking for a sound to set them apart of from their NWOBHM contemporaries. Their second full length record, High ‘N' Dry finds them taking the early steps from heavy metal to the pop metal sound that would propel them to stardom. Tracks like ‘Bringing on the Heartbreak' hint at the polished, stadium-ready sound they would soon make popular. The solid songwriting and improved production on this record set them up perfectly for the future success of records like Pyromania and Hysteria.Bootys Collins was already an influential part of the 70s funk scene before he set out on his own in 1976. He had played bass with both James Brown and George Clinton earlier in the decade, so it was safe to say he knew how to funk. His second full length record beautifully captures the fun-loving, party atmosphere that he would come to be known for. Tracks like The Pinocchio Theory and Munchies for Your Love lay down tight grooves and provide plenty of comedic gold.Turn up that nerd to get your recommended dose of essential NWOBHM and Funk!
We kick off our 2018 edition of the Essential Project where we dig deep into a particular genre, bringing you the important records and historical context you need to be a true Album Nerd. This year we're focusing on NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) and Funk music. Our first NWOBHM record is from a ‘what-could-have-been' band named Angel Witch and their 1980 album by the same name. They helped to pioneer the fast, metallic, proto-thrash style that would mature into the modern metal sound we know today. While the band dealt with production and marketing issues, there's no denying the catchiness and pure fun they captured on this release. If you're down with guitars and songs about witches and demons, this is essential listening. On the funk side, we start with the roots of funk – 60s soul music and the incomparable James Brown. In 1973 the hardest working man in show businesses released 3 soundtrack albums, the third of which is among some of his best material of his career. The super-tight playing and soloing by his backing band largely carries the record, but Brown peppers in plenty of his own flourishes to keep things interesting. Clocking in at over 70 minutes, The Payback is a more than generous dose of pure funkiness. This episode has been certified 100% essential nerd.
This week I'm reviewing a New Wave of British Heavy Metal deep-cut, Angel Witch by Angel Witch. There's a lot of bluesy rockin' here but also a fair bit of complex weirdness that foretells some of the technical intensity of extreme metal. I'd never heard this one before, but now the chorus to the title track is permanently stuck in my head.

When you think about Def Leppard, country music is probably the last thing that comes to mind. This band helped usher in the second wave of British heavy metal and made it appealing to the masses with a polished, pop element to their songs that are all a far cry from the country genre. But on their fourth album, 1987's Hysteria, an album created after the horrifying car accident that took drummer Rick Allen's arm, the band said yes to recording a little song that their producer Mutt Lange brought to them, an acoustic number he had originally written as a country tune that became “Love Bites,” their first chart topper in the US. Unpack the lyrics and history of this song and the incredible triumph of the Hysteria album in the new episode of the Behind The Song podcast. Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 229 features an interview with Mando Tovar of Las Cruces. Hailing from San Antonio, TX, Las Cruces are metal lifers who have weathered line-up shuffles and music industry tumult since they emerged in the mid-Nineties. Since their inception, they've represented a style of "true doom" that has one foot in early Black Sabbath and another in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. I spoke with guitarist Mando Tovar about why the early Las Cruces albums made him decide he had to join the band, and how their late drummer Paul Deleon took over vocal duties for a time. We also discussed the long road to completing and releasing their fourth album Cosmic Tears, and what it'll take to keep Las Cruces going. My thanks to Mando for speaking with me, and to all of you for listening. Dusty from Century Media Records band Night Demon sits down for an unfiltered talk about his journey to being an official member of the band. Dusty speaks about his ability to adapt in situations like live performances vs studio recording sessions. All that and more! subscribe www.meetmeforcoffee.co NIGHT DEMON Bio Hailing from the city of Ventura an hour north of Los Angeles, Night Demon is a classic metal trio that unites musical inspirations and influences ranging from old-school metal greats such as Iron Maiden, Metallica, Diamond Head, Angel Witch, Riot and Saxon to punk legends The Misfits. NIGHT DEMON showcases a sound forged by a deep-seated passion for the New Wave of British Heavy Metal loaded with unmistakable notes of American muscle and swagger. For a decade, the name Night Demon has been synonymous with top-shelf traditional heavy metal. Indeed, the trio consisting of Jarvis Leatherby (vocals/bass), Armand John Anthony (guitar) and Dusty Squires (drums) have been long been lauded as purveyors of stellar songs, searing live shows, and a relentless work ethic. When the world ground to a gut-wrenching halt in March 2020, Night Demon's extensive touring plans were derailed; however, their creative flame burned brighter than ever. In the spring and summer of 2020, the band unleashed a series of five standalone 7” singles, in strictly limited colored vinyl format. These singles showcased brand-new original songs, cover versions, and previously unheard live recordings to tide the fanbase over during the lockdown. Night Demon's loyal legions voraciously devoured these releases, and all physical product sold out instantly. Aside from the new original songs (which were also released on digital/streaming platforms), the single recordings were exclusive to the 7” vinyl pressings. They have never been made available to the public for purchase in any other format until now. The Iron Maiden “Wasted Years” cover is a previously unreleased track recorded the same night as Night Demon's legendary Live Darkness album in Cleveland, Ohio. And the two Scorpions classics (“In Trance” and “Top of the Bill”) were recorded live in Germany with special guest Uli Jon Roth (ex-Scorpions) trading licks and leads with Armand. The point is simple: These songs deserve a wider release than the collector's edition 7” vinyl treatment they received in 2020. To that end, Year of the...
