We had the pleasure of interviewing UMI over Zoom video!R&B singer-songwriter UMI announces her new EP talking to the wind out January 19. She also releases the second track off the project, “why dont we go.”talking to the wind follows UMI's critically acclaimed debut album Forest in the City (2022), which Rolling Stone praised for its expansive “sun-soaked electro R&B” and “moody slow jams.” The new 4-track project sees UMI in a confident new light as she fully embraces love, life, but above all, feeling okay with being lost in the world. Her first independent release, talking to the wind was written during a transitional period. Ultimately, UMI found wisdom and the creative motivation to write the EP through meditation and getting in touch with the elements by literally speaking with the wind.UMI's second offering from the project, “why dont we go,” begins with reverberating vocals before funk-infused guitar and a snapping bass line come into play. It's the perfect backdrop for an upbeat anthem about throwing caution to the wind and falling in love. The accompanying video is a playful celebration of youth and beauty. UMI and her friends are the epitome of carefree as they dance around a sunlit room.“This song is about enjoying your eternal youth, to be playful, to be free, to not think so much about life. Through the lyrics I paint a scene of me falling in love with someone I met for the first time, dancing through the night and forgetting my parents advice. ‘why don't we go' is me inviting myself and the other person to just let go and to live for the sake of living—even if it's just for one night,” UMI says of the single.“why dont we go” channels many of the same themes as UMI's previous single “happy im,” released on August 11, existing in the same sonic universe but paired with a more danceable beat. Upon release, “happy im” was praised by outlets like Billboard and Vibe, which raved “UMI is a whimsical, enchanting dream personified. With her new single, ‘happy im,' she kicks off her 2023 in bliss.” V Magazine said that “the infectiously uplifting track is enough to cheer audiences up instantaneously.” And Numéro Netherlands summed up her trajectory, stating that UMI is “gearing up for a prolific, passionate, and powerful new season.”On November 27, UMI will host two meditation events at Lune Souleil in Downtown Los Angeles. An extension of the meditations she leads before each of her concerts, UMI and attendees will celebrate that evening's beaver moon aka the November full moon. At both the 7 pm PT and 9 pm PT meditations, UMI will lead group breathing and a sound bowl session to infuse the power of the moon into attendees. On December 2, UMI will join Jhené Aiko at Oakland Arena, where she'll perform her new singles from talking to the wind as well as hits from Forest in the City. Coco Jones and Tink will also make special appearances as openers. With only a debut album under her belt, UMI has quietly risen to the forefront of R&B. Beyond tens of millions of streams, Complex hailed her as one of the “20 R&B Artists to Watch in 2023,” noting, “Even if you aren't familiar with the name yet, it's highly probable you've heard her voice. UMI is just getting started and feels poised for greatness.” Beyond plugs from MTV, Vogue and more, Pitchfork said that “her growth is both exciting and compelling.”ABOUT UMI:UMI is a 24-year-old Seattle native pioneering a new sound rooted in neo soul and folk. Her deepest intention is to use her music as a vessel for healing and human connection. Meaning ocean in Japanese, "umi" is a beautiful reflection of her artistry - soothing like a day spent in nature. She flows across melodies and allows herself to dive into the human experience in a way that leaves listeners feeling deeply understood. UMI's Japanese roots as well as her life journeys as a Queer woman can be felt throughout the themes of her songs. The energy of her melodies reflects her personality - deeply caring and inviting. Currently living in Los Angeles, UMI continues to create genre-bending music that captivates and inspires listeners. We want to hear from you! Join Afternoona Army host Lia and Friend-Of-The-Pod, Becky, for an in-depth conversation with Director of Premium Sales and Service for ASM Global at Oakland Arena, Bryan Watson. On February 14th, Min Yoongi aka Suga aka AgustD dropped a bomb on the fandom: he's going on world tour. This sent Lia and legions of other Suga biases into a spiral knowing that securing tickets would be tough and the best strategy was leaning into our collective power. It didn't take long for us to discover that suites were available for group purchasing at Oakland Arena--an option once dominated by corporations--but more accessible post-Covid. And as we explored the suite logistics...Bryan achieved a minor celebrity status among those ARMY trying to see Suga X AgustD in the Bay Area. The TL;DR is our efforts worked and we can't wait to collectively celebrate D-Day (AgustD, D-2, and all those solos) on May 16th. But the behind-the-scenes world of concert operations intrigued us. We wanted to learn more how things worked and Bryan generously obliged!Show notes:Oakland ArenaOakland Arena SuitesBangtan TV (where AgustD Music Videos will be dropping like it's hot)AgustD D-Day is ComingWant to catch other great BTS content? The band was in a tough spot in Oakland after finding out that their Lamborghini, machine gun drummer Matt Cameron tested positive for Covid-19. They had some friends help them out such as Josh Klinghoffer and Richard Stuverud, but the big moment of the night came when Ed asked a simple question: "is there anybody out there who can play drums?" We get to speak with fan fill-in drummer Josh Arroyo about his entire experience living out a dream that would send any Pearl Jam fan to heaven. Josh's story to get to that moment is nothing sort of amazing. From his father taking him to the Oakland Arena for the first time to see Rush on the Moving Pictures tour, the story comes full circle when he steps into the building with his 12-year old daughter to see her first Pearl Jam show. But that wasn't the only special thing to happen that night. From his fandom way back to the Cow Palace in San Francisco all the way up to where he's at today, less than a week from playing and he's one of the most admired and celebrated fans around. In addition to delivering the best baseball experience for the Club's fans, Kaval is committed to increasing the organization's community impact. During the 2020 season, the Club focused on five main community initiatives: COVID-19 relief, social justice, building community, education, and youth baseball and softball. The team donated more than $2.6 million back to the community, including $1.62 million for COVID-19 relief efforts. Kaval worked alongside state and local officials to open an Accessible Voting Center at the Coliseum for the 2020 General Election. The Coliseum Vote Center was the largest in Northern California and included in-person voting in the Oakland Arena, curbside voting from the car, and ballot drop boxes for individuals to deposit their completed mail-in ballots. The A's also provided 3,000 KN95 masks and 1,300 pre-loaded Clipper cards to help ensure the most vulnerable Alameda County residents could vote safely. As part of the Vote Center, Alameda County provided free COVID-19 tests and flu shots. In February 2021, under Kaval's leadership, the A's partnered with the White House and the State of California to open the first federally operated vaccination center in the country at the Oakland Coliseum. Kaval is leading the Club's efforts to open a new waterfront ballpark in Oakland. He has made it a priority to engage the community to ensure the ballpark project is bigger than baseball. The A's have hosted hundreds of community meetings and workshops since 2018, giving residents a voice to share their perspectives and insights on how the ballpark can benefit and provide opportunities in Oakland. He is also leading the A's plans to redevelop the current Coliseum site. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Kaval earned a B.A. with honors in International Relations and an M.B.A. from Stanford University. He is a long-time resident of Menlo Park and lives there with his wife and two daughters.

Let's all hold The Spaniard to the promise that he makes Matt Anderson at the end of this episode. He owes Matt big-time for creating his website and all of his T-shirts during his fight career. But you'll see that these were labors of love that go back to their school days. It's crazy fun to hear them look back on pizza lunches and that time with the rattlesnake. Plus hearing Matt's stories about Channing Tatum, Matthew Broderick, Amy Adams … consuming all the wrong things before and during marathons … bluffing his way into Oakland Arena … and just plain taking leaps of faith and pursuing what he loves. Which, oh by the way, led the guy to win two Emmy awards!
This is a black arts and culture site. We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. I am interested in the political and social ramifications of art on society, specifically movements supported by these artists and their forebearers. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay! 1.
