Spring and summer mean warmer weather and fresh fruit and vegetables. But if you've noticed your lips or mouth itching or tingling after eating a raw fruit or vegetable, you may have OAS.  Oral Allergy Syndrome (also known as Pollen Food Allergy Syndrome) can occur when people who suffer from certain tree, grass, or weed pollens eat specific fruits, vegetables, or nuts. Dr. Phil Jones explains why this cross-reactivity occurs and how you may be able to minimize your discomfort while still enjoying the fruits of the season! For more information on OAS and a helpful pollen-food association chart, visit our web page: https://www.allergyasc.com/oas.

But if they're not causing symptoms of a more severe allergic reaction, don't panic. Chances are good that this is not something that's going to lead to more worrisome features.”  -- Dr. Anne EllisDr. Mariam Hanna sits down with Dr. Anne Ellis, professor of medicine and chair of the Division of Allergy and Immunology at Queen's University, to explore the intricacies of Pollen Food Allergy Syndrome (PFAS), also known as Oral Allergy Syndrome. Dr. Ellis, a leading expert in allergic diseases, guides listeners through the complex landscape of PFAS, offering insights into diagnosis, management, and patient care.On this episode:Understanding Pollen Food Allergy Syndrome:Dr. Ellis provides a comprehensive overview of PFAS, explaining how it affects primarily the mouth and tongue but can impact the entire GI tract. She discusses the common allergens associated with PFAS, such as birch pollen, and the cross-reactivity from fruits like apples and tree nuts.Diagnosis and Misconceptions:Explore the diagnostic process for PFAS. Dr. Ellis clarifies the difference between PFAS and other food allergies, emphasizing the role of accurate diagnosis through skin tests and serum-specific IgE testing.Management Strategies:Learn about effective management strategies for PFAS. Dr. Ellis shares insights on how to reduce symptoms through avoidance of raw fruits and vegetables and the role of immunotherapy in treating underlying environmental allergies.Patient Care and Red Flags:Dr. Ellis highlights key aspects of patient history that may indicate more severe allergic reactions, discussing the importance of distinguishing between local symptoms and systemic IgE-mediated reactions.Advice for Primary Care Providers:Gain valuable tips for primary care providers on recognizing and managing PFAS. Dr. Ellis emphasizes the significance of a detailed medical history and the reassurance that most PFAS cases do not require an epinephrine auto-injector.Tune in to this episode for an in-depth discussion on Pollen Food Allergy Syndrome, offering practical advice and expert insights for both healthcare providers and patients.Visit the Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical ImmunologyFind an allergist using our helpful toolFind Dr. Hanna on X, previously Twitter, @PedsAllergyDoc or CSACI @CSACI_caThe Allergist is produced for CSACI by PodCraft Productions

In today's Friday 5 episode, VJ explores oral allergy syndrome (OAS) and its connection to pollen allergies. OAS manifests as mild allergic reactions in the mouth and throat after consuming raw fruits, vegetables, or nuts. These reactions occur due to proteins in these foods resembling those found in specific pollen types. VJ delves into five common pollen types and their cross-reactive foods: birch, ragweed, grass, mugwort, and latex. Each pollen type has a unique set of cross-reactive foods, highlighting the importance of awareness for individuals managing pollen allergies. You can read more about Oral Allergy Syndrome in this Cosmopolitan feature here.  If you would like to book a free initial consultation with VJ Hamilton, The Autoimmunity Nutritionist, to find out about allergy testing and how nutritional therapy and functional testing could improve your health, you can book an appointment here.Learn more about the functional medicine services at The Autoimmunity Nutritionist Clinic here. Thanks for listening! How can a primary care physician be sure their patient's oral allergy syndrome (OAS) is not another type of allergy that may require more aggressive management? Katie Kennedy, MD, attending physician, Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, discusses: how to get a history to distinguish between OAS and IgE-mediated food allergies and seasonal/environmental allergies; the importance of pollen patterns in your region and a review of cross-reactive foods; why kids with OAS react differently to raw and cooked food (raw apples vs. apple pie); whether to recommend antihistamines; differentiating between contact rashes (such as from strawberries and tomatoes) and OAS; how to evaluate whether the child may be at risk for systemic reaction (and should carry epinephrine); can a child outgrow OAS; when to refer to a pediatric allergist, plus a review of the treatments the allergist might suggest; and more.  Published June 2022. I have been reading a lot about gut health, and gut feelings, and am intrigued. Do you believe that our gut truly affects our mood, and how does this work?   -Liz in Cooperstown Q2 - 7:27  I am a recovering sugar addict, and a mom of one. I want to know how to curb my sugar cravings and eat healthier in general! BUT, I get hung up on the fact that I have Oral Allergy Syndrome which causes my body to be oversensitive to the pollen in most fresh fruits and veggies. I get an allergic reaction including throat and tongue swelling. Common foods I cant have are apples, bananas, pears, peaches, plums, carrots, green beans, and celery. Help!!! -Mira. (Sounds like Mee-ruh), Eau Claire, WI  Q3 - 11:32 I can NOT shake this funk I am feeling! I haven’t felt like myself in months. I am tired all the time, even though I am getting the same amount of sleep I’ve always got. I have been following your 80/20 principle and eating clean 80% of the time, and have even been keeping an eye on my gluten and dairy. I had my doctor run a panel and he said that everything looked completely normal. What could be wrong?  -Angel in Harrisonburg  Q4 - 14:14 I am trying so hard to get more sleep because everyone tells me how important it is when I am trying to lose weight, but I just can’t seem to make myself go to bed early! I try to get in bed around 9 and usually end up staring at my ceiling or my phone until atleast 11pm or almost midnight. Sleeping in is not an option for me, so I need to figure out how I can make myself go to bed earlier and sleep through the night. * Brenna in Massachusetts  Q5 - 16:28 I read online that being outside and getting sunlight will help with my gut health which I think is CRAZY! I have no idea how the two are connected, but I am wondering how I can implement this, how much time do I need to spend outside to enjoy the benefits of sunlight and fresh air, and do you have any tips to squeeze this into my day? * Michelle in Hampton Q6 - 19:11 I’ve recently been diagnosed with Adrenal Fatigue, and I am trying to figure out how to get a handle on it the natural way. What are some foods that I should be focusing on eating, and what are the foods that I should be avoiding? Are there any natural supplements and vitamins that you recommend I take? * Holly in Atlanta  Q7 - 29:30 I am working hard to regulate my blood sugar naturally and am focusing on foods with a low glycemic index. What are some of the best things that I should be eating? Also, do you think buying organic makes a big difference? * Katherine in SC Q8 - 37:28 I’ve recently started making smoothies in the morning and try to squeeze as much green stuff in there as I can! A friend recommended buying frozen organic spinach, because it’s cheaper than fresh spinach AND it makes the smoothies cold and icy which I love. I am just curious if frozen spinach has all the same properties as fresh spinach? Is there any difference? * Rachel in Columbia Q9 - 41:06   I’ve always heard that weight loss is 90% what you eat, and that exercise isn’t as important, but I want to start moving and trying to kick my weight loss up a notch. I work a full time job and have two kids, so I don’t have a ton of time, but I am committed to carving out atleast 30 minutes a couple times a week. That in effect, if you get rid of the Epstein Barr Virus, which stays hidden within cell barriers in the body , you can create wellness. That in fact, the body is not out of sync attacking itself, but is actually attacking an invading cell. Especially is noted in Hashimotos which I have, where this Epstein Barr Virus attaches itself . Do you have information on these new findings and might this be a breakthrough and how do we go about ridding ourselves of residual Epstein Barr cells. Thank you    Ellen: How do you determine so many of the recommendations you provide in your personalized weight loss analysis simply by analyzing saliva and small blood droplets. My Integrative docs have always taken a lot of blood work. Thank you   Anon: Hi Stephen! I have dealt with interstitial cystitis for a year now and it is terrible! Since I was diagnosed, I have been eating very clean (no wheat, dairy, soy or refined sugar) and have been trying to incorporate more fruits/veggies into my diet. I have definitely improved but I still have much more work to go...any advice on how I can get rid of it for good and stay healthy? Thank you so much!   Natalie: Hi Dr. Cabral! I'm curious what your thoughts are on Oral Allergy Syndrome? Is there a way to combat it/lessen the symptoms/reverse it? Thank you! Natalie   Lindsey: Hi it's that time of the year where I get hay fever! Please can you help me with a natural remedy for this so I don't have to take antihistamines everyday! Many thanks! We love you in the UK - come and visit us soon!    Brooke: Hi Dr. Cabral, First, thank you for providing quality information for free to the world daily! My question is, do tattoos damage the body? If so, how? What are the long term effects? thank you for your time, Brooke Elise   Lauren: Hi Steve, I have a few questions in regards to when to take certain supplements and if it matters. I loved your podcast on top 10 supplements and just purchased the magnesium as well as the D3. I have deficient in B12 and Folate/Iron so I was going to purchase the Activated B complex as well. Can you please let me know if i should take these at specific times? I currently take D3 right before breakfast as well as my probotic and magnesium at night. Also, do you know when your nutritional support protein shake will be back in stock? Thanks! Hi Steve, Thanks for answering my questions in regard to magnesium. I was wondering in the one you suggested, I see the inactive ingredient is hypromellose. Is this something I should be weary of? I have read a lot of different things but it is hard to follow and fully understand. Thanks   Thanks for tuning in and I hope you enjoyed the Q&A and all the tips added in along the way! - - - Show Notes: http://StephenCabral.com/436 - - - Get Your Question Answered: http://StephenCabral.com/askcabral
