Anna Hughes is the director of Flight Free UK, which is working to inspire people to embrace trains and other forms of travel that have a low-carbon impact – including by asking people to pledge to take a year off flying. She shares how they aim to see the pledge not as a sacrifice, but as an opportunity to explore different (and maybe more rewarding!) forms of travel. Mark Smith is the founder and CEO of The Man in Seat 61, a fantastic online resource with information on train routes, fares and timings in Europe, the UK and beyond. He joins the show to talk about why he's seeing growing interest in train travel, to offer tips for how train travelers can find good deals, and to share his favorite rail routes in Europe. This new episode, one of my favourite so far, comes with a challenge. Can you listen to it and not reimagine your own relationship with flying or, as one of our guests puts it, being "twanged around in an aluminium sausage"?   I stopped flying in 2006. I travel to the far reaches of Europe on the train, travelling to Sweden, Denmark, Austria, Italy, Mallorca, as the extent of my reach. I long one day to take the Trans-Siberian express. Yes, there are now places in the world I probably will never reach, but that's OK. I can honestly say that not flying has not diminished my quality of life at all. I travel slower, I see more. As we reach a time where airlines and travel companies are falling over themselves to tempt you back onto airplanes to head off on holiday, we are taking a pause, a breath, to ask a question that once felt heretical, but which now feels rather exciting… “what if we all stopped flying?”   Anna Hughes is an author and flight-free adventurer, and hasn't been on a plane for more than a decade. She is the director of Flight Free UK, a campaign that asks people to give up flying for a year in order to break a habit and try different ways of travelling. You might have thought that if we were going to find life anywhere in the Universe, our best bet would be to look at stars like our Sun, on account of the tremendous success of Earth. It's a good bet, for sure, but did you know that the Sun is brighter and more massive than 95% of stars in the Universe? And that down at the low-mass end of the spectrum, the most common type of objects out there are ultracool dwarfs: low-mass red dwarfs and even brown dwarfs? They have rocky planets around them and could be our first candidate Earth-sized worlds for direct imaging, and are incredible scientific objects of study all on their own. What do you want to know about them? I'm so pleased to welcome PhD candidate Anna Hughes onto the Starts With A Bang! podcast, and to share her knowledge and wisdom and enthusiasm with all of you. Here's how we start 2021 with a bang, and I hope you enjoy it!

Du fragst dich: Was machen die anderen eigentlich anders? Ich muss das doch aus können. Ich stand auch mal an dem Punkt. Gefangen in dieser Spirale aus ständigem Vergleichen. Schauen, was andere machen.

A different no-guest podcast today. I´m developing my own style step by step. Sometimes I think of a great guest to have on the show and then I go back to following through an idea I have about a topic and the value it hopefully provides for you. In this episode, I focus on...focus. And what it means to create it and what you can do to stay in your track. Because honestly, I struggle with it often. I can be super focused and not let anything distract myself. But then, one thought that makes me think that other thing is now more important than what I´m working on in that moment, takes over. Since I´m working from home, this is a serious daily challenge and I know many people go through similar scenarios even when working in an office. So much can distract us these days. But if we can find the strength and gain more control over our habits again, question them and change them for the better, our lives do improve. The three tips focus on practical steps you can take to feel a little happier and more contented about yourself and your life. Running is something that you can schedule, for example when usually during stressful moments, it would fall by the wayside because something else takes priority. Let me help you brighten your path, start the day feeling energized and keeping the momentum throughout. Begin gently and if you want, start implementing one practical tip until you see the result and feel confident about the next steps. I go deeper into my own routine and what I do when those moments of distraction come. Because they do and there is little or no way around it these days. You will surprised about this one life-hack that helps you become detached from the need to be present 24/7. And tomorrow, the world still goes around with you feeling a little happier. Watch your world change. I wish you all the best and please let me know in the comments how you deal with social media overwhelm and our re-action to things and people? 7 Tage. 4 Länder. 260 km. Motivation for training sucked. I became very impatient and couldn´t quite understand why. I also didn´t want to give up my idea of needing to live a balanced life. I picked up this idea years ago as a young mum of two children wanting to provide them a stable, solid life. Smooth sailing. But strangely enough, the inner hunger and drive for something outside this concept drew me in part to ultra running and seriously undergoing some out-of-zone experiences. Deeply fulfilling me, giving me a sense of purpose. The more I was fighting to keep my balance, the worse things got. So I had to find a solution and totally re-think my definition of balance. What came of it is the realization that balance screws me up and I believe, it has similar or the same effects on many people, specially athletes working so hard to keep the balance. The truth is: It doesn´t work in the long run to keep everything under control. Seeking balance causes the opposite. The inner drive, the longing for something outside these contraints grows. That´s when people say: I´m going to tackle a long distance race, to state one of the many ways. And what you walk away with is a bag full of exciting, often raw experiences where you learn about yourself and how you roll. Because it´s what matters. How you roll defines your actions. Break free from your very own concept and idea about balance. And use the tips I share with you to help you re-define your outlook on how you live, work, run and play. To your success! Eating and drinking in training and in races can be a real science. If you decide to make it one. Today, I´m shining the light on a topic that is on the one side, very individual and on the other, something where some guidelines can indeed work for most endurance athletes. I share my personal experience from last week´s ultra marathon where I ran for 11 hours and put another experience in the books. Where no stomach issues played a role. Where I could perfectly sustain my energy levels. Where I suffered from no headaches or swollen fingers. Where I felt well -hydrated throughout. Where I didn´t need solid foods and got my calories from using one product only. It works for you if you´re sensitive and often suffer from an upset stomach and energy lows. Enjoy this episode. Time to shake things up a bit in the best sense. After carefully observing the endurance running scene, talking to athletes and in my work as a coach it´s more than obvious that many people struggle to juggle their running training, recovery, relationships, health and careers. It is a huge undertaking if you´re an ambitious runner that wants to take performance to the next level. Having been caught in the spiral of going through the motions myself in the past, I´m sharing the lessons I´ve learned and how essential it is for our health to create balance in life. The flood of information, wins and successes seemingly cursing the net 24/7, doesn´t help to stop and relax for a moment. Often, there is pressure building up to do more, to train harder, to do better. And that´s human nature. But if the price is so high that you´re paying with your health, suffering from chronic niggles, pain or even injuries, the time is now to stop and learn to reconnect with the roots. That´s where I take you today as I talk about my learnings and share some personal stories of how I´ve managed (not mastered) to listen to my body more, recover faster and keeping the bigger picture in mind. After all, nobody really cares. Who you are as a person on a day-to-day basis, and who you evolve into when running serves you, not crushes you, is so much more important than a podium finish. So how you do get to the point of not only building excellent health but sustaining it? Enjoy this episode and share with me what you took away. And: How do you manage it all? What´s your most pressing issue and the solutions you´ve come up with to have more balance? Folge direkt herunterladen
