For decades, gut health was reduced to yogurt commercials and vague promises from probiotics that barely worked. But what if we've been targeting the wrong bugs, using the wrong delivery, and ignoring the true source of chronic inflammation and accelerated aging? In this thought-provoking episode, Dave sits down with Hannah Kleinfeld, a leader in microbiome innovation, to expose why most probiotics fail—and how one company's scientifically validated approach could redefine your gut, brain, immune system, and even your metabolism. You'll learn how dysbiosis may be wrecking your brain without you knowing it, why your probiotic likely died in your stomach acid, and the secret to rebooting your microbiome after antibiotics, GLP-1 drugs, or years of toxic exposure. This isn't just about digestion—your gut controls your cravings, energy, sleep, mood, and aging trajectory. So what's the one upgrade that can actually reset your gut… for good? What You'll Learn in This Episode: • Why your gut—not your brain—is making most of your decisions • How 93% of probiotics on the market fail before they reach your intestines • The “AB 10” protocol that rebuilds your gut after antibiotics or SIBO • What GLP-1 weight-loss drugs are doing to your microbiome (and how to stop it) • The shocking gut–brain–heart axis connection you've never heard of • Why inflammation, brain fog, and mood swings may start with leaky gut • Which probiotic strains are clinically proven to improve cognition and mood • What to do if you want to eat gluten again—or survive American wheat • How a fermented papaya concentrate could replace your acid reflux meds • Why optimizing your gut could extend your lifespan by 40% ***Get 20% off your next purchase by going to https://omnibioticlife.com/pages/dave-asprey/ or omnibioticlife.com/dave*** SPONSORS -Timeline | Head to https://www.timeline.com/dave to get 10% off your first order. -Zbiotics | Go to https://zbiotics.com/DAVE for 15% off your first order. Today, I am blessed to have Josh Dech here with me. He has a deep understanding of the gut-brain connection. He is an ex-paramedic, and Holistic Nutritionist, specializing in gut health. It was the successes his clients have had with complex digestive diseases, previously thought to be impossible, that got him connected to some of the world's most renowned doctors. Since then, he's been recruited to the Priority Health Academy as a medical lecturer, helping educate doctors on the holistic approach to gut health, and complex digestive issues. Gut health is known to be connected to mental health, emotions, sleep, productivity, concentration, hormones, inflammation, sickness, detoxification, cravings, relationships and more. An unhealthy gut can severely impact our lives. In this episode, Josh dives into various aspects of gut health, emphasizing its ancestral connection and modern threats. He discusses how our gut microbiome, inherited from birth and influenced by environmental factors, faces challenges from the standard American diet and agricultural practices. Josh warns against the consequences of disrupting the microbiome, linking it to the rise of modern diseases. Plus, we touch on plant-based medicine, and Josh advocates for its potential benefits over pharmaceuticals. He underscores the influence of financial interests on healthcare choices. Finally, Josh sheds light on the critical role of stomach acid in digestion and health, dispelling common misconceptions about acid reflux and advocating for a holistic approach to digestive issues. Throughout this episode, Josh emphasizes identifying and addressing root causes rather than treating symptoms.
In this episode, we detail the cellular make-up of the gastric lining, highlighting hydrochloric acid (HCl) secretion and its role in digestion, micronutrient absorption, and microbial defense. We discuss potential pathophysiological consequences of hypochlorhydria, including impaired digestive signaling, bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine (SIBO), and more. Lastly, we detail upstream microbial control, focusing on the influence of the oral microbiome and oral dysbiosis.Topics: 1. Introduction- Highlighting the stomach and hypochlorhydria / low stomach acid, as well as microbial balance, dysbiosis, and overgrowth.- Discussion of intestinal microbiome and oral microbiome. 2. Gastric Anatomy and Mucosal Layers- The stomach: cardia, fundus, body, pylorus.- The gastric mucosa: epithelial lining, lamina propria, muscularis mucosae.- The epithelial layer: mucous cells, parietal cells, chief cells, enteroendocrine cells.- Beneath the mucosa: submucosa and muscular layers that contribute to gastric motility, mechanical digestion, and more. 3. Mucous Cells - The surface epithelium and gastric pits.- Secretion of thick, viscous mucus.- Protecting the epithelium.- The mucus traps bicarbonate ions: neutral microenvironment that protects against acid-induced damage. 4. Parietal Cells and Gastric Acid Secretion- Secretion of hydrochloric acid (HCl): denatures dietary proteins, sterilizes ingested food.- Parietal cells produce intrinsic factor: binds vitamin B12 to facilitate absorption in the ileum. 5. Chief Cells and Pepsinogen- Secretion of pepsinogen: activated by low pH into the proteolytic enzyme pepsin.- Pepsin and protein digestion.- Release of gastric lipase. 6. Hydrochloric Acid: Digestive and Protective Roles- Immune defense.- Pepsinogen activation.- Adequate gastric acidity essential for properly acidified chyme.- Priming release of bile and pancreatic enzymes. 7. The Small Intestine, Stomach, and Microbial Regulation- The pyloric sphincter.- The stomach supports minimal microbial diversity.- Acidic barrier aids in limiting the entry of opportunistic microbes into the small intestine. 8. Hypochlorhydria, Low Stomach Acid- Hypochlorhydria can compromise one of the body's defense mechanisms.- Colonization of the small intestine.- Insufficient pepsinogen activation and possible protein digestion impairment.- Suboptimal chyme formation and downstream digestive capacity.- Possible symptoms of hypochlorhydria.- Possible impaired absorption of micronutrients including vitamin B12, iron, calcium, magnesium.- H. pylori infection, autoimmunity, aging. 9. The Oral Microbiome, Intestinal Microbiome, and Dysbiosis- Oral and environmental microbes.- Altered gastric pH, bile, digestive enzymes, and more.- The oral cavity as the gateway to the GI tract.- Oral microbial species.- Oral hygiene and oral microbiome health. 10. In this episode, we explore some of the neural and cellular mechanisms underlying gastrointestinal motility, emphasizing the roles of the enteric nervous system (ENS) and interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) in coordinating smooth muscle contractions throughout the digestive tract. We detail disruptions in motility seen in dysautonomia, intestinal methanogen overgrowth (IMO), and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). And, we finish with a brief discussion on the impacts of low stomach acid. Topics: 1. Introduction to Gastrointestinal Motility - Coordinated contractions of smooth muscle that move food, liquid, and waste through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. - Neural, hormonal, and microbial factors. - Intestinal methanogen overgrowth (IMO) and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). 2. Neural Regulation of Gut Motility - The enteric nervous system (ENS) embedded in the walls of the GI tract. - The ENS, central nervous system (CNS), and vagus nerve. - The myenteric plexus governs motor control and peristalsis, while the submucosal plexus regulates secretion, absorption, and blood flow. - Stress and motility 3. Cellular Regulation of Gut Motility - Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs), pacemaker cells located near smooth muscle cells. - ICCs generate slow-wave electrical activity. - Acetylcholine enhances smooth muscle contraction. 4. Dysmotility and Potential Contributing Factors - Impaired ICC function, smooth muscle dysfunction, nervous system dysfunction. - Dysautonomia, a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. - External stressors, hormonal imbalances, and more. 5. Intestinal Methanogen Overgrowth (IMO) - Characterized by an overgrowth of methane-producing archaea in the intestines. - Excess methane production affects smooth muscle activity and can slow intestinal transit. - Symptoms such as bloating, abdominal discomfort, constipation. - Breath testing. 6. Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) - Excessive bacterial colonization in the small intestine, disrupting normal gut function. - Protective mechanisms including stomach acid and intestinal motility. - Low stomach acid (hypochlorhydria) reduces the acidic environment needed to inhibit bacterial colonization. - Bloating, diarrhea/constipation, and more. 7. Overlap Between IMO and SIBO - Excess hydrogen produced in SIBO can serve as a substrate for methane production in IMO. - Can exacerbate each other, creating a loop that worsens symptoms. 8. Addressing Dysmotility and Overgrowth - Determining the root cause of dysmotility. - Dysmotility can involve multiple regions of the GI tract. Thank you to our episode sponsors: 1. This process produces gases that cause the contents of the stomach to splash up into the esophagus...

Dr. Gioffre discusses the connection between acid, gut health, inflammation, and sugar and why managing these things is crucial for living healthy. He explains the three critical problems in everybody's health while providing steps to overcome these issues in a balanced way. Tune in to learn more about acidity in our bodies and the key role it plays. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store.IN THIS EPISODE: [6:22] Dr. Daryl Gioffre tells us his story and what changed the course of his life and led him to become a gut specialist.[11:15] What is the connection between acid, gut health, inflammation and sugar? [15:12] What is the cause of dis-ease and why are doctors getting it wrong? [17:30] What are the three critical problems for everybody's health? [20:33] What are some signs of low stomach acid?[23:56] How can you support healthy acid?[27:05] What foods can help support proper gut health and function? [31:58] Can you drink coffee while managing your acid health? [34:26] How does alcohol affect the acidity in our body?[37:37] How do sweeteners affect our acid? [40:15] What do we need to know about sugar and how it relates to gut health and inflammation? KEY TAKEAWAYS: The best way to help increase the acid in your stomach is to take 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar + ⅓ cup warm water, and drink it 20-30 minutes prior to your biggest meal of the day. Those with acid reflux should start with ½ tsp + ⅓ cup warm water. This must be done with consistency. Artificial sweeteners are the very worst thing you can put into your body, you need to avoid them like the plague if you want to be healthy. Healing your gut is the key to healthy skin, to lowering your weight, to better brain function. That is the key to living longer. QUOTES: [11:18] “No one dies of old age, you know there's all these different diseases out there like heart disease and cancer. By the way, cancer has now overtaken heart disease as a number one killer in 21 states. You've got to understand our genes have not changed for 40,000 years, so it's not a gene issue. This is an epigenetic issue, which means the lifestyle choices we make, how you think, how you eat, how you move, lack thereof, that is going to dictate your longevity, your quality of life, and the quality of your energy.” - Dr. Daryl Gioffre [12:12] “For the first time in human history, our children have less of a lifespan than we do.” - Dr. Daryl Gioffre[15:26] “When I say get off your acid, I'm not referring to the acid in your stomach. I'm referring to the acidity in your tissues that's causing you to rust and rot from the inside out.” - Dr. Daryl Gioffre"The acid in your stomach is your first line of defense." - Dr. Daryl Gioffre"This is about fitting things into your life, not the other way around." - Dr. Daryl Gioffre"The average cup of coffee is 100x more acidic than tap water." - Dr. Daryl Gioffre[38:58] “Artificial sweeteners are dangerous, they're poison. Aspartame metabolizes into a couple of different amino acids, but one of those is actually methanol, which comes from wood alcohol, and that metabolizes into formaldehyde in your body. So literally when you are taking in these artificial sweeteners, you're putting the same things that they embalm dead bodies with into your body.” - Dr. Daryl GioffreRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramGUEST RESOURCESGet Off Your Acid WebsiteGet Off Your Acid InstagramDr. Daryl Gioffre's InstagramGet Off Your Acid TwitterGet Off Your Acid FacebookGUEST BIODr. Gioffre is a highly sought-after gut health and inflammation specialist with over two decades of experience in the field. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Al: Hello Dr. Cabral, I have a question about food sensitivity. If my food intolerance test show high reactivity to chicken eggs (whites in red field), can I safely eat other eggs like quail eggs, duck eggs etc? I particularly like quail eggs and there are some good nutrition informations about them. What do you think? My second questuion is about fruits after meals. I am aware from your podcasts that fruit isnt good to combine with solid meals. In my case, it causes bloating if eaten after a meal as a desert, but only if its fresh fruit. If the fruit is eaten dried as a dessert, there is no issue whatsoever. Why is that, it doesnt make sense to me? I dont drink much fluids after meals and my OAT is clear of candida by the way. Thank you. Jacqueline: Hi Dr Cabral Thank you for everything you and your team do. 2 questions regarding pregnancy. I am just finishing fmd 21, heavy metal and cbo protocols. My husband and I are going to start trying at what point should one stop use of sauna and flying on airplanes. Any other health habits or products other trn herbs that should be postponed to post breast feeding? Rickardo: Hi Stephen Cabral. on my recent blood tests with my GP over the last few years, i have had low white blood cells neutrophils. My doctor has no idea why this is casued, but said it is best we just monitor it. Do you have any suggestions as to how i can raise my levels and become healthy again? thanks so much ! Karen: Hi there Dr. Cabral and team - so grateful for all you guys are doing!!! I recently listened to a podcast from someone who seems very knowledgeable about gut health say that ox bile shouldn't be taken with meals because it DECREASES stomach acid. Could you weight in on this Karen: Just wanted to see if you had any thoughts on the pros and cons of CALCIFEDIOL vs. CHOLECALCIFEROL versions of vitamin D supplements? Thanks so much! In this episode of The Nutritional Therapy and Wellness Podcast, host Jamie Belz, FNTP, MHC, brings back historical audio clips from a lecture originally given by the founder of The Nutritional Therapy Association, Gray Graham. Gray discusses the optimal function of digestion in a way you've never heard it explained. Listen to this, then hit the “subscribe” button to catch the next episode where Gray explains digestive dysfunction. Many embark upon their wellness journey by cleaning up their diet. While this is a necessary step, the healthiest diet according to everyone's bioindividual needs doesn't do much good for them if they're not properly breaking down the food into molecules that can be absorbed and utilized within the body. The health of the organism is dependent upon the health of the organ systems, which are dependent upon the health of the organs, which is dependent upon the health of the tissues, which is dependent upon the health of the cells, which is dependent upon digestion. Thus, all wellness begins with digestion. 06:41 – Overview of digestion 08:59 – Digestive inputs/volume 15:42 – Six digestive functions 17:09 – Digestion is a north-to-south process – where does it begin? 20:48 – Digestion is fundamental to Nutritional Therapy 21:45 – How's it all supposed to work? – Deep dive into optimal function ________________________ Visit www.nutritionaltherapy.com/podcast or click here to record an intro or ask a question you'd like answered on the show!

In today's episode of the Balancing Chaos Podcast, Kelley sits down to dive deep with functional nutritionist Andrea Nakayama. Her goal is to pioneer the movement to transform healthcare into a system that WORKS. Andrea knows that a functional nutrition approach is the answer to our healthcare crisis, both for individuals and for society at large. Her method involves understanding the mechanisms that led to chronic disease in an individual; to uncover how and why that unique body has reacted as it has; to look at the evidence that familial history, lifestyle choices, and circumstances amass to become underlying physical factors of disease and distress; to reveal the biological tipping point that manifests as signs, symptoms and diagnoses; and to find and use the appropriate diet and lifestyle modifications that could actually help the chronically ill person get better. In this episode, Kelley and Andrea explore the gaps in the medical system when it comes to treating individuals as whole people rather than just their diagnoses. Together, they emphasize the importance of recognizing that doctors have limited medical training and may not have all the answers when it comes to alternative treatments such as a customized nutrition approach. Through their conversation you will learn the three roots of chronic disease, the problem with trendy diets and why they don't work, the circle of influence around inflammation, what your bowel movements have to say about your health, and SO much more!
