Written by screenwriter Dana Stevens, The Woman King is a historical epic about an all-female warrior unit that protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey during the 17th to the 19th centuries. The film is set in the 1820s and stars Viola Davis who is tasked with training the next generation of young warriors. Stevens chatted with Final Draft about discovering the “richness of the story” while writing the script. “I just could not believe that I did not know this story, that I had never heard of it,” Stevens said. “And the more I delved into it, just on my own… I mean, I was watching things on YouTube, like things in French, you know, I was just I was just blown away.” When asked for advice to aspiring screenwriters trying to break into the industry or write a passion project such as The Woman King, Stevens had some inspiring words. “Go ahead and write. Write a lot. Have a few things you're working on. Have your personal project that you just love, that you think maybe no one will ever make, but also maybe have another project that's your, you know, more commercial thing,” she says. The Woman King is now available on a variety of streaming platforms.

When our host Brittany Luse first heard of The Woman King – a film about an all-women warrior unit defending the West African kingdom of Dahomey during the years of the Atlantic slave trade – the idea made her nervous. Hollywood's record with Black historical dramas is pretty checkered. But then she saw it.In this episode, Brittany breaks down the film's significance and the task of approaching historical representations in fiction. She sat down with actor Sheila Atim – who plays the warrior Amenza – to talk about the physical trainings, the joys of making a movie with actors from across the diaspora and how Atim has played characters on different sides of the Atlantic slave trade. Then Brittany is joined by Maya Cade, creator and curator of Black Film Archive, and culture critic Shamira Ibrahim. They discuss how to square historical accuracy with a satisfying Hollywood narrative.

The film 'The Woman King' featuring Viola Davis and John Boyega twists the evil history of the Dahomey Kingdom. The rise of the kingdom of Dahomey coincided with the growth of the transatlantic slave trade. King Ghezo was heavily involved in the international slave trade and engaged in ceremonial human sacrifices. He used his female warriors to go into the interior to hunt for captives to be sold as slaves. We are here to set the record straight. The film is trying to hide the lies through this feminist agenda.Visit our website: https://www.therealistthevisionary.com

The Bass Sisters talk about their #TheWomanKing experience. The film, with its primarily Black female cast led by #ViolaDavis, is receiving mixed reviews. The Bass Sisters celebrate the depiction of mentally and physically STRONG black female characters because they believe that representation matters. But here's the kicker...ideological representation matters to them as well. This is why if given a choice to vote between a white man who shares their views on the horrors of abortion, the power of school choice, or the importance of parental rights over a black woman who did not share their opinions on those subjects...they would vote for the white man who shares their political world view because IDEOLOGICAL representation matters. The Bass Sisters also point out why boycotting this film because it is not 100% accurate is an unwise exercise. First, when is film EVER 100% accurate? Second, if The Woman King doesn't do well at the box office, it will be another generation or more before we can see an intelligent action film with wise and beautiful sunkissed talent. So be sure to like, share and follow. Oh yeah, and ....Don't live in an echo chamber.
