Amazon's much-hyped drone delivery program: why has it largely failed to take off? Next, we examine the growing concern about hunter satellites and their role in potential space wars. Finally, we explore the exciting developments from The Exploration Company as they raise a record-breaking €40 million for their space ambitions. Join us for a thought-provoking discussion on the future of technology and its impact on our world.00:00 - Intro01:26 - Amazon's No-Fly Zone: Drone Delivery Largely Grounded Despite Splashy Launch10:16 - Enter the hunter satellites preparing for space war24:41 - The Exploration Company jet sets its space ambitions with record €40 million raiseSummary:Despite Amazon's claims about obtaining regulatory approval for their drone delivery program, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has restricted their drones from flying over roads or populated areas without specific permission, according to official documents. This has greatly reduced the number of homes that can be reached in Lockeford, California and College Station, Texas. Amazon had requested the FAA to relax these safety restrictions, however, the agency released new regulations last year that did not accommodate many of the company's proposals.True Anomaly, a start-up founded by former US Air Force Major Evan “Jolly” Rogers, aims to solve the US Space Force's orbital warfare problems. The company, which has raised over $23 million from investors, plans to launch its first orbital mission in October 2023 with two Jackal "orbital pursuit" spacecraft. The Jackals will be capable of rendezvous proximity operations, which involves maneuvering close to other satellites and training sensors upon them, without any weapons. The Jackals' first mission will be to spy on each other. If successful, Rogers aims to deploy thousands of autonomous spacecraft for the US military. The company is designing a cloud-based control system to integrate autonomous agents and human operators, and has applied for a trademark covering hardware and software for orbital space-to-space imagery, rendezvous proximity, and target acquisition systems. The Exploration Company, a French-German startup, has raised €40 million in a Series A funding round, a record for European space tech. The company is focused on making space exploration more affordable, sustainable, and accessible. It is developing the first privately funded European space capsule, known as Nyx, which will be able to carry goods and humans into space to service space stations and pursue exploration missions. The company aims to commercialize its first full-scale capsule by 2026 and launch its second demonstrator in 2024, as well as expanding its team. The commercial space market is expected to reach $40 billion by 2035, rising to $70 billion if human space flights are included. The Exploration Company aims to democratize space exploration and enable nations, industries, and individuals to participate in building the new space world. Our panel today>> Vincent>> Henrike>> TarekEvery week our panel of technology enthusiasts meets to discuss the most important news from the fields of technology, innovation, and science. This week in drone news: Amazon is starting drone deliveries this year, A small drone was found crashed near a runway in Arkansas, the proposed drone act of 2022, drone safety awareness day, and a new Pilot Institute course! Amazon plans to begin deliveries in northern California this year the company announced this week Prime Air drones will carry packages that weigh up to 5lbs and are shoe-box sized or smaller The drone will hover ~10 feet over the ground to drop the package and will find this spot via a QR code printed by the customer. https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2022-06-13/amazon-plans-to-start-drone-delivery-in-california-this-year A small drone was found crashed near a runway at Boone County Regional Regional Airport in Arkansas The drone is a “Skyrider” and models cost ~$50. The aircraft was not registered The airport manager stated “Our airport is in a Class E airspace. A drone is not allowed to go zero feet within four miles of our airport and can then go up to 400 feet after that,” said Boone County Regional Airport Manager Judy McCutcheon according to KY3. “That covers the entire city limits of Harrison, Arkansas, with the exception of the far southeast side. That is a no drone sight unless you are a 107 drone operator, and get permission with the FAA before you fly.” https://dronexl.co/2022/06/13/recreational-drone-runway/ This bill in the US House of Rep. seeks to cover malicious use of drones, including Weaponization of UAS Impairment of identification or lighting Interfering with protected activities (Operations of aircraft, airports, vessels, vehicles, law enforcement, or military ops) Operating in restricted airspace with knowledge of the prohibition Transportation of contraband Threats, attempts, or conspiracies of the above Terrorism and electronic surveillance Penalties for injuries/death based on above infractions This law would allow DHS to prosecute certain offenses in the same manner as the FAA https://www.justice.gov/ola/page/file/1465976/download New paid course from PI! It's Troublemaker Tuesday and we've got a full plate of trouble to talk about from the markets that just can't seem to stay out of the headlines, to a joint letter from automakers to congress. We're also talking about the potentially real arrival of Amazon drone delivery almost a decade later.Crypto Crash, Bear Markets, & Fed on WednesdayCrypto markets lost more than 300B as most coins dropped to 24 month lowsBTC below 21k and ETH temporarily below 1,100General market has stayed 20% below Jan session high for a sustained period indicating an official bear marketFed may accelerate rate increases to .75 from previously stated .50 amidst inflation acceleration“Two consumer surveys have also shown households' expectations of future inflation have increased in recent days. That data could alarm Fed officials because they believe such expectations can be self-fulfilling.Take away: Focusing on the right affordability solutions is more important than everMajor OEMs strongly urging congress to lift EV tax credit cap in joint letterGM, Ford, Stellantis, and Toyota highlighted the fact that they are investing over 170 billion in EVs and asked that the cap be lifted and a ‘sunset' date be put in placePotential Republican wins in the midterms are raising concerns that conservative financial policies may eliminate the credits“In April, U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, a key Democrat from West Virginia, questioned the need to extend EV tax credits in the face of strong consumer demand and Chinese production of battery components."There's a waiting list for EVs right now with the fuel price at $4. But they still want us to throw $5,000 or $7,000 or $12,000 credit to buy electric vehicles. It makes no sense to me whatsoever," Manchin said. "When we can't produce enough product for the people that want it and we're still going to pay them to take it -- it's absolutely ludicrous in my mind."Take away: Don't count on the money, but count on the demand. Amazon finally getting drone delivery moving real packages (probably)The company announced that it would launch its inaugural drone delivery service in the town of Lockeford, California, later this year after it receives the green light from the Federal Aviation Administration. Almost 9 years after founder Jeff Bezos talked about it on 60 minutesAfter several test crashes and employee's who raised concerns were fired, the program seems to have recovered and will begin drone delivery of thousands of products which have yet to be specified. Georgia and Rene are back! Their podcast is back! But... the world has changed. Technology is more advanced. Culture is more complicated. And our humanity... well, we need to talk. This week, topic one is all about Georgia's failure... er... informed choice not to update her operating system and apps, compared to Rene's reckless... er... enthusiastic embrace of all things beta. Humans hate change but also boredom. We're funny that way!Topic two is all about Amazon's new announcements, including a Ring security drone for inside your house that's either super cool or super creepy, and how they're using cute animal designs try and get microphones in the rooms of our children.
This week, the guys ride on their eBikes, with masks of course and talk about the latest topics. Cobra Kai is now on Netflix, Tik Tok Ban, Amazon Drones, Xbox Series X, Scott Pilgram, The Batman, Bel-Air, Walking Dead, Mulan and much much more!
Give us feedback: mysciencebytes@gmail.com We discuss this week's hot science topics. Today is September 10th, 2020. The first use of prosthetics goes back to the fifth Egyptian Dynasty that ruled between 2750 to 2625 BC. The earliest known written reference to an artificial limb was made around 500 BC. Thousands of changes in technology changed the artificial limb over time, now researchers have created an artificial skin that is capable of reacting to pain just like human skin. #artificalskin According to a leaked FBI bulletin, cops are worried that criminals are using internet-connected smart doorbells, such as Amazon's Ring doorbells, to spy on law enforcement. #CriminalsAndDoorbells For the first time, engineers built optical tweezers capable of grabbing individual bio-molecules and proteins without damaging them — this is a vast improvement to technology. #LaserTweezers Amazon Prime Air, the retail giant's drone delivery project, was just designated an “air carrier” by the Federal Aviation Administration, meaning they can start to test drone package deliveries. #AmazonDrones Using carefully-crafted nanomaterials, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology scientists were able to bend light in a way no natural material could accomplish. The result? The first hologram movie of the Earth spinning on its axis. #Hologram In another breakthrough, a team of French scientists created an anti-gravity levitating fluid that allows a tiny boat to float on the top and bottom of the fluid. it, like flipping gravity on its head. #Antigravity Scientists recently found a new victim of climate change and pollution: The blackmouth catshark that had its teeth, skin, and other features dissolved away from swimming in contaminated water. #PollutionAndSharks --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sciencebytes/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/sciencebytes/support
