This episode first aired on 29th March 2021 Are you enjoying the podcast? Please leave a rating and a review. Today's episode is a fly-on-the-wall conversation with one of my closest friends, Paul Dermody. We focused initially on nutrition and diet and then went in a different direction about halfway through the episode. If you enjoyed any of our previous conversations with a similar show structure, then this is not to be missed. Key Points · Many of us have a tendency to overestimate our nutritional knowledge. Paul encourages us to reflect on why we think about food the way we do, especially if we're stuck in our health and fitness goals. Cultivate self-awareness around where you're taking in your information and humble yourself to embrace the possibility that there may be gaps in your knowledge—and that some of that “knowledge” may be outright wrong. · Suffering comes from our belief that we can predict the behavior or thoughts of other people. It's unproductive to rely only on the little voice inside your head, because more often than not, we tend to be our own worst critic and overrationalize situations when relying on our own assumptions. Don't try to predict the intentions of other people. It's almost always a fruitless endeavor. · It's easy to get wrapped up in the idea that this one achievement or one event or one purchase will make you happy. What usually happens is, once those goals are reached, whatever high you experience always turns out to be temporary, and you're off chasing the next goal. True happiness is found in the moment and counting all the small blessings that we tend to take for granted, and not in simply pining for targets that we may or may never hit.
When I started the podcast I dreamt of having engaging long form conversations. Like a throw back to the conversations I had around the dinner table with my dad when I was a kid. This is Paul's second appearance on the podcast. Conversations like this one give me a real pride that i'm moving towards that goal unfiltered long form conversations. Paul is an expert in nutrition and fitness coaching. If you're tired of strict diets, constant tracking, and generic fitness advice, then Paul is your man. Paul Dermody's coaching style revolves around empowering individuals to make confident decisions about their food and exercise that will last a lifetime. He believes in moving towards weight loss or management without rigid rules or practices. I chat with personal trainer Paul Dermody about breaking the dietary cycle. So many of us have a negative self image, a desire to change how we look starts us on a journey of unsustainable dietary practises, which inevitably leads to lapsing on your diet and more negative self talk. It's a vicious cycle. Paul talks to use about how to break this cycle and change our relationship with food. Support this podcast

In the latest episode of the Simply Fit Podcast, I have the pleasure of speaking with Paul Dermody. It seems as if the algorithms wanted Paul and I to connect, his content kept popping up on my feed and once I looked into it a little more, I knew I had to speak to him. Paul is an online health and fitness coach, however, he's not just the average run of the mill online coach, he's on a mission to break the diet cycle and to get people to critically think about their health, their fitness and their existing beliefs. There's a lot of health and fitness content in this episode but I feel the real value lies in the learnings that Paul has gained through his own journey of self-awareness and his meticulous desire to put his own belief systems under the microscope and come out with a more well rounded perspective. We go through: How you can better construct your weight loss goals. How we can break through dieting myths and our own unhelpful thinking styles. How you can start to create boundaries and why your lack of them is hindering your progress. Do you do shift work? Has it affected your eating habits over time? Today I talk to Steve Griffen, about how afer joining the Guards, and working ever changing shifts led to him putting on a massive amount of weight (156kg at his heaviest). After seeing a picture of himself on holiday's, he decided that it was time to make a change and with the help of coach and friend Paul Dermody (who was also on this podcast see #49). He has lost over 50kg. We talk about how he previously tried all the fad diets, blaming himself when it didn't work, and that how it was the little things that made the biggest difference Not crazy workout plans or crash diets, but planning his food and doing simple things like walking were what made the biggest differences. We also talk about how discipline and planning ahead around his shifts is the real key to success when on a weightloss journey, and that you need to find something that works for you and your shifts. He is also a cancer surviver, he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of testicular cancer when he was 20 and it was likely that if he didn't go to the doctor when he did, he would not have made his 21st birthday and since then has worked on raising awareness about cancer and not ignoring the signs! Today I talk to Paul Dermody. Paul is an online coach who predominantly works with people in a very overweight catagory. We talk about how its not gym programmes but habit changes that get people the results as many of his clients have dropped 40 plus pounds wihtout even stepping into a gym, and that the weightloss process is actually rather underwhelming compared to what people think it will be. We also talk about how there is no good or bad foods but there is a good or bad diet and how it is better to add more nutritious food to your diet rather than cut stuff out when trying to improve your diet. Paul also uses money analagies to describe calorie intake regularly which I found is a great way of doing it because like food, we always need money! This episode was very conversational and we even had a lil chat about learniing languages and a mini rant about how people need to get tougher and not just accent being ok where you are.
