Unsure about next season, Ross Chastain was glad NASCAR did not make an immediate rule change after his crazy last lap at Martinsville. Plus notes on Chase Elliott, JTG-Daugherty Racing and Petty GMS Racing owner Maury Gallagher is thinking about future championships.
Phil and Josh welcome Talking In Circles creator Clayton Caldwell back to the GSP to discuss all the happenings at Phoenix Raceway for NASCAR championship weekend. The crew covers Joey Logano becoming a two-time Cup Series champ and the first multiple champion for Ford since David Pearson. They also discuss the other four drivers racing for titles along with the shocking news of Coy Gibbs passing. News of Jimmie Johnson returning to NASCAR as a part owner of Petty GMS along with a limited schedule along with Project 91 news is also went over. Ty Gibbs won the XFinity title after a tumultuous week leading up to the race and having to deal with the loss of his father soon after. JRM had three of four drivers in the final but all had issues on pit road at some point which played a part in their inability to defeat the JGR driver. Zane Smith was similarly dominant in the Truck Series finale to give Front Row Motorsports their first championship. The big news for that series is Kyle Busch Motorsports going to Chevy and having Chase Purdy as their full time competitor for the title along with partnering with Rev Racing to bring ARCA champion Nick Sanchez up to run for ROTY. The GSP Roundup covers Pecco Bagnaia winning Ducati's first MotoGP title since 2007 with Casey Stoner along with the first Italian champ since his mentor Valentino Rossi in 2009. Moto2 saw Augusto Fernandez lock up the title before moving up to MotoGP. Super GT saw Nissan win their first title since 2015 and the Calsonic Impul team win for the first time since 1995 along with Iron Lynx being announced as the factory team for Lamborghini in the LMDh category, WRC preview for Rally Japan and WSBK in Indonesia. Phil and Josh go over Week 9 for NFL both with their regular and fantasy teams before doing the preview and picks for the Brazilian Grand Prix before Josh's Sim Segment and Show Close.
The 2022 season for NASCAR is officially in the rear view mirror. On this week's NASCAR Live we look back at an unforgettable championship weekend. We start with the Cup Series and Joey Logano becoming a 2-time champion. We then look back on the NASCAR Xfinity championship race, Ty Gibbs crowning moment, and we honor the late Coy Gibbs in the process. We also revisit the Lucas Oil 150 and Zane Smith being crowned a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Champion. One of the biggest news stories of the weekend was the announcement that 7-time champion, Jimmie Johnson will be returning to NASCAR as a part-owner and part-time driver in the Cup Series for Petty GMS. Mike Bagley sat down with Jimmie to discuss why now is the right time. Finally we hear from NASCAR's leadership in the annual state of the sport address. Learn more about your ad choices. It was a Championship weekend in Phoenix, and there was a ton to discuss. The guys explain why their Joey Logano predictions came true, whether or not Ross Chastain deserves blame for his move on Chase Elliot and Christopher Bell's bright future with JGR. They also talk about Chase Elliot's bland post-race interviews and why the pressure is on Ryan Blaney next year. Jimmie Johnson is now a new owner. The guys explain why he was surprised by the announcement and why the exciting pairing of Noah Gragson and Erik Jones gives Petty GMS a reason for optimism. Mitchell and Patrick also discuss nobody wrecking Ty Gibbs, Zane Smith's late race charge to the front, and drivers and teams to watch for next season. Finally, reveal their picks for the last wrap of the week of the year.
2022 has been a dream season for Noah Gragson. A big part of his success is due to the relationship that has developed between Noah and his crew chief, Luke Lambert. It was announced this week that Luke will make the jump with Noah and continue as his crew chief when he heads to Petty GMS in the Cup Series. Our Jason Toy caught up with Luke to discuss that move and Noah's chances for a championship at Phoenix. We also take a look at the betting odds for the Cup Series Xfinity 500. When the dust settled on the 2022 Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, Dale Earnhardt Jr. got to fulfill a broadcasting bucket list item: declaring that the No. 43 was the winner. On this week's episode of The Dale Jr. Download, he and co-host Mike Davis sit down with the man who helped make it possible, the Petty GMS driver of the No. 43 NASCAR Cup Series car, Erik Jones.Erik's start in racing came when his mother read in a magazine about children competing in quarter midgets. Soon after, his father, Dave, bought a car, a book on set-ups, and the Jones family racing operation was off and running. At the age of 12, he graduated into the pure stock class and explains that after his first outing he was told by tech officials not to return due to his on-track aggression. Erik got his first big break in his racing career when he got the call to shake down Kyle Busch's late model at the Nashville Fairgrounds. The connection came through spotter Brandon Lines, and even though he had limited seat time in a super late model, he was able to produce impressive lap times at the famed oval. When Erik scored his biggest victory to date later that year in the Snowball Derby, beating out Busch to do so, a lasting impression was made. Not long after that Busch and executives at Toyota Racing were lobbying on behalf of Erik, and the efforts led to an agreement with Joe Gibbs Racing.Once he was sitting in the Kyle Busch Motorsports No. 51 truck, Erik's meteoric rise through NASCAR's national series began. He notched his first Truck Series victory in just his fifth attempt and went on to win the series championship in his rookie season. He also made waves in the Xfinity racing pool, winning six times through 2015 and ‘16. Erik explains that since he was having on-track success, he didn't apply himself as much outside of the race car as he could have. When he arrived on the Cup scene in 2017, the unprecedented grind put a magnifying glass on his lack of preparation.Erik's transition into the premiere division of stock car racing was made difficult by another factor as well: the loss of his father in 2016. As the racing season began, his father was diagnosed with stage-four melanoma. Erik would fly to and from Michigan while competing full-time in the Xfinity Series to spend as much time with his father as he could. He and Dale relate to the process of having conversations with a parent in their final stage of life and having the opportunity to be completely honest and open with them. Erik explains that competing in the Cup Series was a shared dream for him and his father, and his perception changed in the wake of his passing. The conversation also covers Erik's release from Joe Gibbs Racing following the 2020 season. Erik gives great insight into the vulnerability and embarrassment a driver experiences when being let go from a race team. He recalls the painful ordeal of having to tell his family and friends as well as having to finish out the season with a crew that he would be leaving at the end of the year. Erik channeled positivity through the low point and eventually became excited at the prospect of a new start. That opportunity came in 2021 when he signed on with Petty GMS to take over the famed No. 43 ride. After the challenging process of having to start over, the team has turned around in the 2022 season with Erik scoring a major victory at the Southern 500 and being in contention for wins week in and week out. Through it all, Erik has been resilient through the ebb and flow of the racing world and it appears that his brightest days still lie ahead.
