Like all great spinoffs, the Toyota Supra has created its own story over the last 45 years. Once a variant of the Celica, and then a hero car in one of a movie that would launch a multi-billion-dollar franchise, the Toyota Supra name carries a lot of gravitas. That's ignoring its racing pedigree in Super GT, on drag strips, and more. Honoring the Supra's 45th birthday, the folks at Toyota churned out 900 limited-edition examples of the 3.0-liter-powered Supra. Not officially linked to the Fast and Furious film franchise, the company does hint that it's inspired by a custom MkIV Toyota Supra that appeared on the big screen. Still fundamentally the same as the rest of the six-cylinder Supras, this special edition comes in an orange or white finish, sports special graphics, and has a wing. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the '24 Toyota Supra 45th Anniversary Edition and puts it through its paces. Wren takes you on a guided tour of the '24 Supra and highlights some of its features, nods to the Fast and Furious car, and more. Wren also takes you along on a live drive review of this stick-shifted Supra. Adding to these segments, Wren chats with Autoweek's Patrick Carone about the Toyota Supra, The Fast and the Furious, famous movie cars, and more. Closing the show, the pair break down what makes this Supra special.

From Video Gamer to Professional Driver with Jann Mardenborough In this week's Team Never Quit episode, Marcus and Melanie bring you an incredible story that bridges the virtual and real worlds of racing. Join us as we dive into the fascinating journey of Jann Mardenborough, a British professional racing driver who went from playing sim racing video games to competing at the highest levels of motorsport. Jann's passion for racing ignited at a young age. Despite his father's professional soccer career, Jann dreamed of holding a steering wheel. Growing up in Cardiff, Wales, his potential was clear even at age 8 when he impressed a local go-kart track owner. However, financial constraints forced him to give up real-world racing, pushing him towards sim racing games like Gran Turismo. The turning point came in 2011 when Jann entered the GT Academy, a hybrid gaming-driving competition by Nissan and Sony Computer Entertainment. Competing against 90,000 entrants, Jann's exceptional skills in Gran Turismo 5 propelled him to the finals. His dedication saw him practicing up to five hours a day on a simulator rig complete with pedals and a steering wheel. Jann's journey through the GT Academy was nothing short of extraordinary. Starting from virtual races, he proved his mettle on real tracks at Brands Hatch and Silverstone. His performance culminated in a winner-take-all race at Silverstone, securing him a professional racing contract with Nissan. From winning the GT Academy, Jann quickly made a name for himself in the racing world. He has since finished on the podium in his class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, won races, and contended for titles in GT3 and junior formula cars. His career highlights also include competing in Super GT, Super Formula, and the FIA World Endurance Championship. We'll also touch on the Gran Turismo movie, which dramatizes the story of how a video gamer like Jann transitioned into a professional racing driver. This film highlights the transformative impact of the GT Academy and showcases the merging of virtual and real-world racing. Jann's story is a testament to how passion and dedication can turn dreams into reality, regardless of how unachievable they may seem. Tune in to hear more about his incredible journey from a bedroom gamer to a professional driver on some of the world's most prestigious tracks. In this episode you will hear: • My dad isn't an academic person, but he really instilled in me and my younger brother – things about life. You have one life. He was paid to do something he loved. (6:07) • When you're 8 or 9 years old, you don't really understand, but as you get older – what do I want to do? And my thing was racing. I didn't know how I was going to do it. It was always instilled in my head – the understanding what the job was. I thought to myself “I want to do that. I don't know how I'm going to get there, but I want to do that.” (6:26) • It was through my friends – the love of cars, and the objects, and the pictures. I had them on my wall. (8:38) • I was a kid that could recognize a car on the street in the dark just by the headlights as a 6 year-old. (9:50) • With my dad, when I was younger, he never forced anything on me. (17:39) • [Melanie] Q: Using the video game simulation, did you ever think that that was actually going to propel you into real racing? A: No. Absolutely not. It wasn't a conscious thought. My dream was always to be a racing driver, but I didn't know how it would happen. (25:52) • I used to go to work with the keys of my BMW which I had maybe 6 months. I would always go to work with the key in my pocket. That little BMW emblem on the key ring – I'd be rubbing it in my pocket, just thinking, “This isn't it, what I'm doing, but I have at least something which was bringing me joy.” (26:53) • Confidence and arrogance. People want to give you responsibility. If you're a bit soft with your answers – the first impressions are what really matter. (41:11) • Every day in the academy, there was somebody getting eliminated. (41:41) • I box things off in my head, once I learn about them, and I don't revisit them. (50:49) • [His car went airborne] A horrible point in my life. I remember it vividly. (51:34) • [Melanie] As [Marcus'] wife, I see the parallel between the two of you. Both of you never quit. (52:46) • My favorite championship race is the one in Japan. It's called GT500. (64:51) • In motorsports, even in Formula 1, you have 1 tire supplier. (65:25) • Yes, there's things I want to do in the sport. I want my own race team. (67:42) • Be the best that you can be. On Under the Hood, Honda is gearing up for the Super GT series with its Civic Type R-GT, aiming to deliver "ultimate pure sports performance." The race car, developed from the road-legal Civic Type-R, is set to debut in the 2024 season, with shakedown tests scheduled for July 25 and 26. Meanwhile, Zenvo has revealed its extreme hypercar, the Aurora V12, boasting a 6.0-liter twin-turbo engine and two variants, Tur for road focus and Agil for high-downforce racing. However, accidents also make headlines, as a white Ferrari F8 Tributo crashed in Houston during a Cars & Coffee event, and a cargo ship carrying 3,000 cars, including Mercedes-Benz vehicles, caught fire off the Dutch coast. In the market, Nissan faces challenges with the 400z, selling less than 1000 units since its launch, while manual transmissions become scarcer, with only 20 models offering them in 2023. Mazda, on the other hand, decides not to participate in the horsepower war with Toyota and Subaru, focusing on the MX-5's balance and responsiveness. Additionally, Tesla faces scrutiny as it was discovered to have suppressed driving range complaints with a "Diversion Team" manipulating range estimates. On Bending the Rules, Scott Tucker, a race car driver and founder of Level 5 Racing, built a financial empire in payday loans, disregarding regulations and charging exorbitant interest rates of 400% to 700%. Tucker used the wealth he amassed from his payday lending business to fund his racing program for years. Despite his success on the track, Tucker's shady financial practices caught up with him. In 2017, he was convicted of 14 criminal counts related to his $2 billion payday lending company and sentenced to 16 years and 8 months in prison. Additionally, he was ordered to pay a $1.3 billion penalty to the Federal Trade Commission for his deceptive business practices. Despite his conviction, Tucker doesn't fully take responsibility and claims to be misunderstood. Ironically, he was featured on Netflix's show "Dirty Money," shedding light on his bending of the rules and unethical behavior both on and off the track.

Phil and Josh welcome Talking In Circles creator Clayton Caldwell back to the GSP to discuss all the happenings at Phoenix Raceway for NASCAR championship weekend. The crew covers Joey Logano becoming a two-time Cup Series champ and the first multiple champion for Ford since David Pearson. They also discuss the other four drivers racing for titles along with the shocking news of Coy Gibbs passing. News of Jimmie Johnson returning to NASCAR as a part owner of Petty GMS along with a limited schedule along with Project 91 news is also went over. Ty Gibbs won the XFinity title after a tumultuous week leading up to the race and having to deal with the loss of his father soon after. JRM had three of four drivers in the final but all had issues on pit road at some point which played a part in their inability to defeat the JGR driver. Zane Smith was similarly dominant in the Truck Series finale to give Front Row Motorsports their first championship. The big news for that series is Kyle Busch Motorsports going to Chevy and having Chase Purdy as their full time competitor for the title along with partnering with Rev Racing to bring ARCA champion Nick Sanchez up to run for ROTY. The GSP Roundup covers Pecco Bagnaia winning Ducati's first MotoGP title since 2007 with Casey Stoner along with the first Italian champ since his mentor Valentino Rossi in 2009. Moto2 saw Augusto Fernandez lock up the title before moving up to MotoGP. Super GT saw Nissan win their first title since 2015 and the Calsonic Impul team win for the first time since 1995 along with Iron Lynx being announced as the factory team for Lamborghini in the LMDh category, WRC preview for Rally Japan and WSBK in Indonesia. Phil and Josh go over Week 9 for NFL both with their regular and fantasy teams before doing the preview and picks for the Brazilian Grand Prix before Josh's Sim Segment and Show Close.
Welcome back friends. Today's episode features the man, Jann Mardenborough. He's a British racing driver of which started his career by winning the illustrious GT Academy back in 2011. If you aren't familiar, the GT Academy is an international virtual to reality contest which allows players of Gran Turismo to compete in an effort to become a real racing driver, or atleast be given the oppurtunity to do so. This is no simple task as Jann beat out 90,000 entrants to secure his victory. This guy has a special fucking drive (no pun) which has accelerated (no pun) his racing career, one that was never envisioned before. Since 2011, he has competed in the following disciplines; British GT (GT3), GT4, Formula 3, 24H of LeMans (3x), Super GT (GT300 & GT500), and the Blancpain Endurance Series to name a few. For those that are big fans of racing, here are some of the cars he has piloted:Nismo GT-R GT3 (R35)GT-R GT300 (R35)GT-R GT500 (R35)Nismo GT-R LM Nismo (LMP1)Zytek Z11SN - NissanLigier JS P2 - NissanDallara F312That is quite the list innit? It was an absolute honor to be able to add Jann to the Motor Culture library and for him to talk about some of the intricacies of racing. Given his wide array of experience throughout multiple disciplines gives him a very intellectual outlook on racing, on driving. Like me, he likes to get into a car and just fucking drive for no reason and I can truly appreciate that. His love for motoring is one that flows through both categories of business & pleasure. So without further adieu ladies & gents, Jann Mardenborough for Motor Culture. Cheers.Intro & exit track provided by the talented @ArifOmariandFranklinproduction squad. Thanks gents
