Send us a textIn this episode of the Reel Turf Techs Podcast, we sit down with Jim Merritt, founder and CEO of JRM, Inc. Jim's journey in the turf industry began as a teenager working on golf courses, eventually leading to a successful career as a superintendent in North Carolina. Frustrated with the quality of aerification tines in the early 1990s, he started crafting his own—building a product that lasted longer and performed better. What began as a side project evolved into a partnership with Redexim Holland, paving the way for JRM's creation.Jim shares the origins of his innovative approach to bedknives and reels, the importance of listening to customers, and his vision for the future of JRM. He also reflects on his unconventional career path, from his family's accounting tradition to pursuing turfgrass science at the encouragement of a mentor. fWotD Episode 2800: Albona-class minelayer Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Friday, 3 January 2025 is Albona-class minelayer. The Albona class were mine warfare ships used by the Italian Regia Marina (Royal Navy) and Royal Yugoslav Navy (Serbo-Croatian Latin: Kraljevska mornarica; KM). Fourteen ships were originally laid down between 1917 and 1918 for the Austro-Hungarian Navy as the MT.130 class. However, the end of World War I and the dissolution of Austria-Hungary left them incomplete until 1920, when three ships were finished for the Regia Marina. These ships were armed with two 76 mm (3 in) guns. An additional five ships were completed for the KM in 1931 as the Malinska or Marjan class, and were armed with a single 66 mm (2.6 in). All of the completed ships could carry 24 to 39 naval mines. The remaining ships were never completed. The five ships in KM service were captured by Italian forces during the Axis invasion of Yugoslavia and commissioned in the Regia Marina as the Arbe class, and were re-armed with two 76 mm guns. They were involved in some operations against the Yugoslav Partisans along the Dalmatian coast. Following the Italian surrender in September 1943, the three Albona-class ships were captured by German forces with all three being lost or scuttled later in the war. Of the five former KM ships, one was seized and operated by the Kriegsmarine (German Navy) until it was lost. Another was captured but transferred to the navy of the German fascist puppet state, the Italian Social Republic, and scuttled by the Germans towards the end of the war. The remaining three were returned to the KM-in-exile at Malta in late 1943 and swept for mines around Malta until transferred to the new Yugoslav Navy (Serbo-Croatian Latin: Jugoslavenska ratna mornarica; JRM) in August 1945.After the war, the three ships were commissioned into the JRM and their designations were changed several times. In October 1946, two of them were involved in the Corfu Channel incident, an early clash in the developing Cold War, when they laid mines in the Straits of Corfu at the request of the People's Socialist Republic of Albania. The undeclared minefield damaged two British destroyers, killing 44 men and injuring another 42. The incident resulted in a case before the International Court of Justice and a fifty-year diplomatic freeze between Albania and the UK, and Yugoslavia never conceded that its ships had laid the mines. The three remaining ships were stricken in 1962 and 1963.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:07 UTC on Friday, 3 January 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Albona-class minelayer on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm long-form Ruth.

NASCAR is headed to the ROVAL this weekend for the final race of the round of 12 (5:30). Steve Letarte and the guys discuss which drivers are safe, who can point their way in, and who has to win to advance. They also discuss racing strategy and expectations with the new track configuration (9:00).The Professor lists the drivers in tier one of his models and they are shocked by two names that are missing (10:50). Shane van Gisbergen is a fan favorite but not on the model. The guys debate where they think he will finish and if it's worth betting on him not to win (15:00).If you're betting on drivers to win, bet on non-Playoff drivers, plus Byron, Bell, and Larson (21:25).Tampa Timms has a handful of top-10 bets he likes this week and they are all plus money (24:30). Plus, Tampa Timms is an Austin Dillon fan this week and will be making money on him unless he finishes, 11th, 12th or 13th.The guys also have some matchups they are keeping an eye on. Two of those are Chris Buescher vs. Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman vs. Daniel Suarez (32:00).Letarte is big on the prop bets this week and his “Hammer of the Week” is drivers to lead a lap (35:00).In the Xfinity race the question is will it be SVG or AJ Allmendinger winning (39:00)? But, don't be shocked if those two wreck and a JRM car finds it's way to Victory Lane. The Degenerate 4-Pack suffered a loss last week thanks the Professor and Producer Travis. This wee their 4-leg parlay is:Syracuse over 29.5 pointsHouston Texas -6.5 vs. New England PatriotsBuffalo Bills -2.5 vs. New York JetsTampa Bay -2.5 vs New Orleans SaintsThe guys also talks about Ohio State/Oregon, Texas/OU and LSU/Ole Miss among some other big football games this weekend. On the dawn of a life-changing opportunity, Dale Earnhardt Jr. is joined by up-and-coming racer Carson Kvapil this week on the Dale Jr. Download. Carson and his father Travis, longtime NASCAR competitor and 2003 NASCAR Truck Champion, join the show to share the announcement that he will be racing full-time for JR Motorsports in the NASCAR Xfinity Series next year. After impressing the racing world with back-to-back CARS Tour Late Model Stock Car championships in 2022/23 racing for JRM, Carson made his Xfinity debut for the team earlier this year at Martinsville, where he produced an impressive fourth-place finish. He followed this up by nearly winning at Dover, where he settled for runner-up behind Ryan Truex, a result that still haunts him today.Dale first began watching Carson closely when the decision needed to be made as to who was going to replace Josh Berry in JRM's late model stock program. Dale explains that his sister Kelley and husband LW Miller noticed Carson while racing at Millbridge Speedway in the outlaw karts division and made the recommendation. Carson realized he had big shoes to fill in Berry's absence, but it's a task he's managed quite well with multiple marquee wins and season crowns. This past weekend, Carson brought home the most coveted trophy in late model stock car racing: the ValleyStar 300 at Martinsville.Dale shares that he enjoys working with the Kvapil family as Travis allows JRM crew chief Bryan Shaffer to run the show and Carson the opportunity to learn from the team. Dale and Travis both laud Carson's hard work ethic, as he continues to turn wrenches on his family's late model for his younger brother Caden while working in the JRM shop. This weekend, Carson prepares for his Talladega Xfinity debut where he'll once again be behind the wheel of the number-88 JRM entry.21+ and present in North Carolina. One of the traditions that take place yearly is The Greatest Day In Motorsports, which is a national holiday for us at the GSP! Phil and Josh recap Josef Newgarden making a last lap pass on Pato O'Ward to win his second consecutive Indianapolis 500. Newgarden becomes the first repeat winner since Helio Castro-Neves in 2001-02 while Chevy dominated the oval portion of the month at Indy with Penske, McLaren and others like Conor Daly, SRR, RBFH, etc. Kyle Larson stayed to race Indy even with a rain delay and finished 18th, but he ran way better than that for the majority of the race. Scott Dixon, Alex Palou and Kyle Kirkwood picked up the pieces for Honda after a brutal couple of weeks as the IndyCar teams head off to the streets of Detroit. While Larson was racing at Indy, the Coca-Cola 600 started at Charlotte and raced through halfway and nearly three stages before Yung Money flew back and arrived at the track. In the end, NASCAR waited a few hours to call the race and declare Christopher Bell the winner in what ended up as the Coca-Cola 373.5. Social media and fans were angry after numerous clips and pictures showed a drying or dry track, the delay in calling the race and the disappointment in not seeing Larson get into a fast car that Justin Allgaier had driven to 13th. On the XFinity side, William Clyde Elliott II took the win for Hendrick and the 17 car in what was a Cup benefit like the old days. Allgaier won both stages for a second consecutive race, but got wrecked on a restart in the third stage. JRM still faired pretty well in spite of Allgaier's misfortune. Nick Sanchez used track position and good timing to hold off a hard charging Corey Heim for his second win of the 2024 Truck Series season. Heim would later be disqualified for three loose lugnuts, after dominating the majority of the race. Formula 1 held their annual procession at Monaco, with Charl Eclair becoming the first driver from Monaco to win in the 93-year history of the event. Josh watched the regular broadcast while Phil enjoyed the kids broadcast. Fish Lips actually struggled and finished sixth. All of the top-10 in the starting order finished exactly where they started. The only major issue was a crash involving Sergio Perez and the two Haas cars. The GSP Roundup looks at F2/F3 at Monaco, MotoGP/Moto2, Formula E, NHRA, IMSA and Indy NXT before Josh and Phil come back to preview and make picks for Cup/Trucks at Gateway along with XFinity at Portland. They also preview and make picks for the IndyCar Detroit Grand Prix. Dale Earnhardt Jr. sits down with short track racing legend Bubba Pollard to discuss his impressive NASCAR Xfinity Series debut at Richmond. A longtime competitor in the super late model ranks, Pollard first worked with Dale and JR Motorsports in 2019 when he drove a late model stock entry in the ValleyStar 300 event at Martinsville. Pollard's Xfinity debut on Saturday in the No. 88 JRM entry completed a lifelong dream of the Georgia driver. He explains that despite his great success on the short track level, this was the first real opportunity he's received to drive in the NASCAR national series ranks. Pollard was born into a racing family dating back to his grandfather Hence, who built the long-running Senoia Raceway in his backyard. After his passing, the family sold the speedway and Bubba's father, Sonny, entered the racing world himself, competing in the sportsman class locally. Bubba and his sister grew up at the track, and when he was 12 he started driving Legends cars. At the young age of 14, Bubba made the switch to late models and has gone on to win almost every marquee event the division has to offer. 21+ and present in NC.
