Do they need to make a consolidation trade? Dan is intrigued by the Indiana Pacers, who aren't talked about like other contenders in the Eastern Conference despite having played in the Eastern Conference Finals last season.James then picks the Memphis Grizzlies, continuing his theme of Western Conference teams that missed the playoffs last season, and both guys wonder what the actual ceiling is for the Grizzlies with all of their players back and healthy. Dan picks the Cavaliers, who brought back everyone and made a change at head coach to try and get over the hump this season.James' final pick is Victor Wembanyama's San Antonio Spurs, who he thinks will be transformed by the additions of Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes. Dan's last pick is the Miami Heat, who followed up a disappointing season and playoff showing by doing….not a lot in the offseason, unless you count them refusing to offer Jimmy Butler a contract extension.Check out the rest of the Yahoo Sports podcast family at https://apple.co/3zEuTQj or at Yahoo Sports PodcastsSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Intro music from:Arthemis - Survivor (Destiny's Child Cover)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjYCOtYjCY4The Survivor is a 1981 supernatural horror Australian-British co-production directed by David Hemmings and starring Robert Powell, Jenny Agutter, and Joseph Cotten. In Adelaide, Australia (not Eton in the UK as in the original novel written by James Herbert), airline pilot David Keller (played by Powell) survives the crash of his Boeing 747-200, unhurt despite all 300 passengers dying in the accident. With no memories of the accident, he starts to suffer strange supernatural visions.Director David Hemmings is most famous for his acting roles, including Dildano in Barbarella, Marcus Daly in Dario Argento's Deep Red, and Thomas, the fashion photographer in the hugely successful avant-garde mystery film Blowup – a role turned down by Sean Connery because director Michelangelo Antonioni would not show him the full script but only a seven-page treatment stored in a cigarette packet. Hemmings would later feature in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen with Connery 37 years later.Robert Powell, best known for his portrayal of a charismatic cult leader/son of a carpenter in the 1977 epic television drama series Jesus of Nazareth, also played secret agent Richard Hannay in The Thirty-Nine Steps, appeared in Ken Russell's Tommy as Captain Walker and, at the request of his friend and golf partner, comedian Jasper Carrott, co-starred in the BBC sitcom The Detectives (which ran for five series!). He also lent his voice to the 2002 rock opera The Hound of the Baskervilles by Clive Nolan and Oliver Wakeman, playing John Watson. Powell was considered for several roles in Lifeforce (featured in episode 39 of this podcast). A founder member of the Social Democratic Party in 1981, he campaigned alongside Barry Norman on behalf of the party's first leader, Roy Jenkins.Jenny Agutter (OBE), who plays the role of Hobbs the clairvoyant (a male character in the novel), is best known for her ongoing role in the inexplicably popular Call the Midwife. She also starred in two adaptations of The Railway Children, the critically acclaimed film Walkabout, and, relevant to this podcast, An American Werewolf in London (listen to episode 26 for more info). The film also features Joseph Cotten, (best man at Orson Welles's wedding to Rita Hayworth) appeared in five films selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant. In addition to these classics, he appeared in many films and TV programs, including, pertinent to this podcast, one episode of Tales of the Unexpected. He later admitted, "I was in a lot of junk. I get nervous when I don't work." This was his final motion picture, suffering a stroke shortly after working on it.James Herbert, author of the source novel, sent a note to David Hemmings offering his assistance. He never received a reply, and in 1988 dismissed this film and the later Deadly Eyes (the film adaptation of The Rats) as "They're terrible...absolute rubbish. I can only say - don't blame me." The Survivor was Herbert's third novel, published in 1976, coming after The Rats and The Fog.The music for this film is by Brian May! …but not the one you're thinking of... This is the Australian Brian May, who has an impressive musical CV, including: The Blue Lagoon, Gallipoli, Mad Max, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, Missing in Action 2 and Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare. This was the first Australian movie to cost more than $1 million (Australian) to make. The location was shifted to OZ as a complex tax dodge, allowing English investors to completely write-off on the whole film. EA - EA Netherlands' Annual Strategy for 2024 by James Herbert

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 5, 2024 11:20

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: EA Netherlands' Annual Strategy for 2024, published by James Herbert on June 5, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Summary In Q4 last year we spent time strategising for 2024. We already shared the resulting strategy with our amazing organisers at our Christmas EA Organiser Meetup but we thought it'd be valuable to share it here as well. We think the EA community in the Netherlands can be much bigger, we want to ensure we have a good reputation, and we want to do something about the lack of opportunities for Dutch EAs to put their values into practice through their work or volunteering. This being the case, our 'guiding policy' is targeted expansion whilst ensuring growth does not compromise our core epistemic values. This will require maintaining a balance between outreach, intellectual rigour, and field building. More concretely, we will: Develop and implement a communications strategy targeting people who we think would like to be a part of the community, but don't yet know of its existence (thus leading to growth, a stronger reputation, and more new projects) Develop and implement a global catastrophic risk field-building initiative (thus contributing to our level of intellectual rigour and providing more career opportunities) Use EAGxUtrecht to encourage and support attendees in starting new projects or initiatives (thus leading to more career opportunities) Increase our use of volunteers to help with all of the above Meanwhile, we will maintain our existing programmes, e.g., our national EA crash course, our support for organisers around the country, and our co-working office. Introduction Previously, we shared our theory of change. In this post, we're sharing the annual strategy we've been working with in 2024. Together, these are our main strategic documents. They are supplemented by a set of five-year aspirational goals[1] and quarterly OKRs. We developed this strategy in Q4 of 2023 after conducting 20 or so 1-1 calls with key stakeholders. We then held a feedback session using the near-final draft with 30+ key organisers at our Christmas get-together (we sure know how to have a good time!). We developed it using advice from Rumelt's book, Good Strategy Bad Strategy. It consists of a diagnosis, a guiding policy, and a set of coherent actions. It's important to note that our strategy for 2024 is not an exhaustive description of what we will work on. Instead, it describes what we will focus on improving whilst continuing to run our established programmes. For example, we will continue as usual with our national intro programme, our support for organisers around the country, and our co-working office. Diagnosis We begin by defining and explaining the challenges we face and making a 'diagnosis'. This simplified model of reality allows us to make sense of the situation and engage in further problem-solving. The first challenge is the size of our community. With an estimated ~700 effective altruists in the Netherlands, we're smaller than many student associations. This limits our influence and obstructs our capacity to create substantial positive change: namely, helping more people use evidence and careful reasoning when trying to help others. Suppose we want to end factory farming or spend a not-insignificant proportion of society's resources on ensuring the longterm future goes well. In that case, more people need to get involved and start new initiatives. EAN has a good track record here. Many new initiatives from the Netherlands have an origin story closely tied to our community, e.g. Doneer Effectief, several AI Safety Initiatives, and the Tien Procent Club. If we have a bigger community then more of this can happen. The second challenge is the proliferation of negative narratives surrounding effective altruism, primarily in English-speaking regions, and t...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: EA Netherland's Theory of Change, published by James Herbert on May 17, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Below is a summary of our theory of change. We've been working with this theory for well over a year now, but it hasn't been widely shared. To develop it, we followed Charity Entrepreneurship's advice and used these three sources as a guide. However, we mostly used this, which is an updated version of one of the aforementioned sources. It isn't complete. We have a 35-page internal doc with the situation analysis, detailed descriptions of the target groups, etc. However, a few parts are out of date so we'd rather not share it widely. There are also several best practices we still need to incorporate, as suggested in resources such as this. Summary of our theory of change In diagram form In written form Ultimate Aim Help those in the Netherlands excel in contributing to the good, tentatively understanding 'the good' in impartial welfarist terms.[1] Main Challenge Addressed Too few people in the Netherlands are making the most of their opportunity to do good. In other words, there is an insufficient number of highly-engaged effective altruists (HEAs) in the country.[2] Target Groups 1. Proto-EAs 2. Organisers 3. Researchers and practitioners relevant to EA Proto-EAs Activities: Introductory courses, events, media appearances, online presence, and a network of groups. Short-term Outcomes: Increased involvement in the EA community. Long-term Impact: Enhanced knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviours related to altruism. Organisers Activities: Regular 1-1 meetings, knowledge-sharing calls/events, annual retreats, and a national slack workspace. Short-term Outcomes: Enhanced knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviours relating to EA community building. Long-term Impact: Groups that are better able to enhance the altruistic knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviours of their members. Researchers and practitioners relevant to EA Activities: Co-working space, retreats (e.g., AI safety), and fellowships (in progress). Short-term Outcomes: Enhanced knowledge, skills, networks, attitudes, and behaviours related to EA-relevant research and practice. Long-term Impact: Increased ability to contribute to EA as a research and a practical field, as well as related fields such as AI safety. FAQ Q. What about existing members of the community? A. Our strategy is to have a thriving network of organisers who will serve the needs of this target group. We supplement this with very light-touch things, e.g., a national WhatsApp community, small events at our office, etc. So far, this has been working OK, and has freed us to work on things that otherwise wouldn't get done. Q. What about career switchers? A. We experimented with this target group but found we weren't particularly successful. Around the same time, the School for Moral Ambition began to get off the ground, so this area felt far less neglected. Therefore, we decided to put our resources into field building (that's the 'researchers and practitioners relevant to EA' target group). Q. How are you doing monitoring and evaluation? A. Not well enough, but we're getting better and have plans[3] and a budget to invest in this further in the second half of 2024. Some programmes are fairly easy to monitor. For example, last year we had about 60 national intro programme completions,[4] the average LTR was 8.8/10, the average score on the exit quiz was 83%, and 44% reported feeling 'a good deal more' or 'substantially more' inclined to choose a high(er)-impact career path. In addition, CEA asks us to produce an annual report where we detail our progress and provide a set of 12 case studies (examples of individuals who have interacted with us and have then gone on to do cool things). Eventually, we want to have robust monitoring s...

Casual Trek - A Star Trek Recap and Ranking Podcast

Welcome to Casual Tek, a podcast all about the prose of William Shatner! Is that not what we're doing here? Well, if only because we could use the name “Casual Tek” it is this time! After months of Charlie trying and failing to get a copy of TekWar he finally has one, so it's time for he and Miles to delve into William Shatner's attempt at a cyberpunk noir tale. We do some reading from the book and try to explain what TekWar's about, what the technology's like and then desperately want to take some Tek in order to forget this reading experience! Normal service will be resumed shortly as we'll be returning to Star Trek to ‘gift' each other an episode in time for Christmas. 0:00 - A Dramatic reading from the introduction of the book 23:32 - We actually start talking about TekWar 34:51 - Miles tries to explain TekWar From there we kind of go all over the place. It's Halloween, so it's time for spooky episodes of Star Trek! There are some ominous cucumber sandwiches, some salt and a lot of air vents this year! The Man Trap gives us the classic TOS villain of the Salt Vampire and some shapeshifting shenanigans. There's also an amazing glove puppet plant. Dead Stop has a brightly-lit rest stop with offers that are too good to be true. Including why it was on ‘spookiest Star Trek episode' listicles. Persistence of Vision brings us some horror in the Delta Quadrant as it looks like Janeway's losing her mind. The characters and sandwiches from her Gothic novel holodeck program are appearing in the real world! 10:22 - The Man Trap (TOS) 37:58 - Dead Stop (Enterprise) 1:05:02 - Persistence of Vision (Voyager) Miles guested on Breakfast in the Ruins where he talked about some more of James Herbert's rat books! https://breakfastintheruins.podbean.com/e/halloween-special-2023-james-herbert-s-domain/ Talking points include: James Herbert, Classic Dr Who, Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense, Rupert & The Frog Song, The Wicked + The Divine, Yellow Submarine, paintballing, Werewolf, Doctor Zachary Smith, Seth MacFarlane, Logan's Run, The Mountain Goats, Lost, Robson & Jerome, PJ & Duncan, Todd in the Shadows' review of From Justin to Kelly, Cube, The OC, Miami Vice, some Cube 2: Hypercube action, space in Star Trek is Warhammer terrifying, Stargate Universe, Dead Space, Mariah Carey has traumatised us both, Bothans, Mass Effect 2 Relationship Choices and a budget Colin Firth. Oh, and occasionally Star Trek. Pedants Corner: Miles should have said Series One, not Season One of Dr Who, but he was having fun and that level of pedantry is more Charlie's thing Miles was right, Sunshine Superman is indeed a DC Comics character Charlie means that Seth MacFarlane might have gone back in time in a Trials and Tribble-ations way, not a Trouble with Tribbles way Apparently Harry Kim's girlfriend Libby is actually real.
