From a teenage pizza-slinging street racer to a professional National Hot Rod Association-winning Pro Stock Motorcycle drag racer, Steve Johnson understands the value of humble beginnings. He also knows exactly how it feels to reach 200 mph in less than 7 seconds. “I always tell everybody it's like hanging on to a bullet after it's been shot out of a gun.”“First to 500” is Johnson's career calling card. “If you go to all the races in the year that the sanctioning body puts on,” he explains to host Mark Long on this episode of the “Driven to Ride” podcast, “and if you do it for 38 years, you'll have 500, too.” That is a competition milestone no other NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle racer has ever reached. In fact, no one has even come close.Rather than focus on his many racing successes, however, Johnson would rather talk about his off-track efforts. A California native who now calls Alabama home, Johnson is big on helping students achieve their goals. To that end, he founded the BAT-man Scholarship Program (“BAT” is an acronym for “Be A Technician”), awarded at high schools and technical colleges across the U.S. Connect with Us:Website: www.driventoridepodcast.comInstagram: www.Instagram.com/driventoridepodcastFacebook: www.facebook.com/driventorideEmail:hello@driventoridepodcast.com

Richard Gadson wasted no time making an impact in his first National Hot Rod Association Pro Stock Motorcycle season. He finished third in points in 2024, proving he's a force to be reckoned with. It's been a season to remember for the motorcycle drag racer. Stepping into the NHRA spotlight was a new challenge, but one he was ready for.“I did not win rookie of the year. Tony Stewart won, but it was a really tight race. They said it was the closest race in the history of the awards, so it was a trying year, I learned a lot, and I hadn't been new to anything in a lot of years,” Gadson said.Gadson is no stranger to racing. He's a third-generation racer, from Philadelphia, who has won five national championships in various racing series in his career. When he's not on the race track going 200 mph in 6 seconds, he works at Vance & Hines Motorsports in Brownsburg as a technician. It's the same Vance & Hines RevZilla Suzuki team that sponsors him.During the off-season, Gadson makes sure he stays healthy mentally and physically. His words of advice to aspiring pro motorcycle racers? “You really have to chase your dreams and push until you have to believe they're possible.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Thomas Prock and Gaige Herrera join host Brian Lohnes on this episode of the NHRA Insider powered by Speedmaster. The two who garnered championship honors in their respective roles and categories bring us inside their evolution in the sport, the work it took to earn their titles, and how 2025 is already shaping up before them. For Thomas Prock, the Assistant Crew Chief on the Cornwell Quality Tools Chevrolet Camaro at John Force Racing, 2024 was the culmination of years of work in professional racing. Prock takes us through his time at NASCAR, how he applies his learnings there to drag racing, the team environment, working and learning with his father Jimmy Prock, and the approach his team took to dominate Funny Car in 2024. It's a great conversation. Gaige Herrera grabbed his second consecutive championship in Pro Stock Motorcycle and by doing so, firmly cemented himself in the history books of the 2024 season. Herrera talks about the season, the win streak he ran to 11 races, the challenge of competition, and how the category is poised to get even more difficult in 2025. The inside stories you get nowhere else, here, on the Insider!
On this episode of the NHRA Insider Podcast Powered by Speedmaster, Greg Anderson and Terry Vance join host Brian Lohnes to talk all things NHRA. For Greg Anderson, his 6th championship may be the most satisfying and meaningful yet. Winning on the last run of the season under the lights at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Drag Strip, beating a young talent that had gotten the better of him earlier in the year, and doing what many thought impossible hasn't totally sunk in yet. Anderson takes us through his magical weekend to close the season. Terry Vance is an NHRA legend, a Drag Racing Hall of Famer to be, one of the Top 50 competitors in NHRA history, and someone who lives and breathes the Pro Stock Motorcycle category. In this candid conversation, he talks about where the class is, what is needed to make it grow, his opinions on motorcycle drag racing, its future, and how the table is being set for future growth. 2024 NHRA Top Fuel Champion Antron Brown won his fourth championship Sunday night. Then he talked with The Freak Nation a couple days later after he'd had time to think about the historic title. In addition to his four titles Antron has 80 event wins, 851 round wins and last Sunday's Finals victory, settling his first championship as a team owner. Now, though, he must deal with the loss of former driver and last season's Crew Chief Mark Oswald who's leaving for retirement. Antron said Oswald is more than a crew chief to him and his team. Antron Brown has been a mainstay of the NHRA's top levels since 1998, first in Pro Stock Motorcycle and since 2008 in the premier Top Fuel class. After finishing second in PSM points in 2001 and 2006, Brown became drag racing's first African-American champion when he took the 2012 Top Fuel title; he then added two more in 2015 and 2016. In 2022, the former Don Schumacher Racing driver took over full ownership of his team, which continues to this day as AB Motorsports. Brown and fellow Top Fuel champion Steve Torrence teamed up with Jim Beaver and Jolene Van Vugt to race the 2018 Mint 400. Outside of the cockpit, Brown's 100-meter dash time was good enough to qualify for the 1997 US Olympic Trials, and he also hosted Top Gear America with William Fichtner and Tom Ford in 2017.Listen Now: Check out this episode featuring Antron from April 2021! The NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series heads to the Texas Motorplex for the Fall Texas Nationals, and on this week's episode of the NHRA Insider Brian Lohnes is joined by Tony Pedregon to break down what fans should expect to see, what racers need to do, and how championship hopes will be bolstered or crushed in Ennis, Texas. The pair have a class-by-class breakdown of not only the leaders and their positions post St Louis but also of the cars and drivers on the bubble of still being in contention to feasibly win a world title. It is fascinating that Top Fuel is led by a guy who had not had a points advantage in years, Pro Stock Motorcycle is led by a veritable rookie, Pro Stock is only a six-point margin between first and second and Funny Car is a four-way battle that is just a handful of rounds between first and fourth. The pressures, the mistakes that need to be avoided, and the advantages that need to be taken. There's no more time for friends, there is only time for the business of winning at 200 and 300+ miles per hour. A big-time race calls for some big-time takes and this show has 'em from end to end.

Andrew Hines of Vance and Hines joins Hidden Horsepower just days following the historic first ever Pro Stock Motorcycle sweep of the 3 race NHRA Western Swing.
On this episode of the NHRA Insider Podcast host Brian Lohnes is joined by Jon Oberhofer and Todd Smith, the winning funny car crew chiefs from the Denso Sonoma Nationals as well as rookie Pro Stock Motorcycle racer Chase Van Sant. In the case of Oberhofer and Smith, the conversation centers around the long and systematic rebuilding process of their tune-up and race car after the disaster weekend they had in Pomona with a crash followed by a horrible explosion. It is a fascinating thing to hear about their approach, the arduous work, and ultimately when the results began to come to them. On top of that, the pair talk about the workings of their team, personnel, their approach on race days, and the challenges of Sonoma 2023 with odd weather, a massive oil down, a right lane no one wanted, and what it was like to deliver Kalitta Motorsports a win, their first in a long while. Chase Van Sant is one of the young riders in Pro Stock Motorcycle forging his name into the ranks of many established players. Van Sant has not ridden like a rookie as he leads the class in average reaction time, has qualified close to the front of the field, and goes rounds more often than he doesn't. In this fun conversation, Lohnes and Van Sant cover a lot of ground from he mental mechanics of being a rider to the pressures, adjustments, and learning curve of being a rookie. Lots of fun here! Different classes, different lives, the same drive to win. A truly fun show.
Gaige Herrera returns, still undefeated, as a Vance and Hines racer. Gaige won the Gerber Collision and Glass Route 66 NHRA Nationals presented by Peak Performance at Route 66 Raceway and the Mission Foods 2 Fast 2 Tasty Challenge. Angelle Sampey is a three-time NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle champion and not only the winningest female in NHRA but professional motorsports. Sampey sits down for a chat on all things drag racing, but we first start with how things are in the swamp a year after Hurricane Ida. From there, we dig into the season and why she believes her team “is the one to beat” in Pro Stock Motorcycle this year; why Angelle says she's fighting herself on the bike; having self-confidence in drag racing; breaking down the skill it takes to drive a Pro Stock Motorcycle; the origin story of falling in love with motorcycles; going through a beauty pageant phase and how she went from hating it to realize it was another form of competition; the story of the first leathers she wore in her NHRA debut and how that connects to the correct pronunciation of her name; secretly testing a Winston Cup stock car; being afraid of being a girl in racing and calling it one of the biggest mistakes in her career; if it's surreal to have taken a nearly six-year break from racing to come back and be just as successful; shooting for 50 career national event wins; the 2021 championship loss being a driving force. EDITOR'S NOTE: Angelle qualified No. 1 at Indianapolis for the U.S. Nationals, which is her fourth No. 1 qualifier of the season. The event is currently ongoing ... Trophies, fights, and TikTok, oh my! As we wrap up our conversation with Courtney Enders, we're getting all kinds of stories this week. The episode picks up with Courtney describing a house full of racing memorabilia; who is more competitive between Courtney and Erica; inside the Disney movie (Right on Track) made about the Enders sisters from its accuracy to Brie Larson playing Courtney; doing their own stunts; how the film helped grow drag racing; a high school Enders sister brawl; when and why Courtney's driving career came to an end; why she got on a Pro Stock Motorcycle in 2018; if she knew she'd need to find something else in racing; the way she cheated to start her business; the challenges or hurdles of what Courtney does; the dominance and representation of females in NHRA; being a champion gymnast and all-star volleyball player; superstitions around race day clothing; the outrageousness of her TikTok videos; Texas girl loving the Steelers, not the Cowboys. NHRA Editorial Director Phil Burgess, NHRA National Dragster Sr. Editor Kevin McKenna, and NHRAonFox analyst Tony Pedregon all join host Brian Lohnes on this throwdown Auto Club Finals episode of the NHRA Insider podcast. The most informed insiders in the sport dish on what they know, what they think, and what they have heard is coming in the high tension world of pro drag racing. From finals winner predictions to potential off-season headlines, this is a wall to wall gab-fest for the ages. Whether it is the three-horse races in Pro Stock Motorcycle and Funny Car, the two-team brawl coming in Pro Stock car, or the potential fourth coronation of a perennial top fuel champion, these guys all have something to say. A great listen to get you pumped up and full of info for the finals!
Matt Smith and JR Todd join Brian Lohnes on this episode of the NHRA Insider Podcast to talk about their respective weekends in Bristol, Tennessee at the Thunder Valley Nationals and to chat about the last two races of the season. Both men are in a strong championship position with Smith leading the Pro Stock Motorcycle category into Las Vegas and Todd launching himself into third place on the strength of his Bristol race day. For Matt Smith, the conversation revolves around consistency, not beating himself, and letting the world know that Angie will be back on her motorcycle to defend her win last year at what was the season-closing event. He talks about buying a Suzuki, building a Suzuki, and having his options open for 2021 as to what he plans on riding. Interesting stuff! JR Todd talks about coming away from a Bristol Sunday one round short of a win but far stronger in points and confidence. After struggling in qualifying, Todd and his DHL Toyota Camry crew mowed down the likes of John Force, Matt Hagan, and Ron Capps in eliminations before drawing the short straw against Alexis DeJoria in the final round. An interesting conversation with a reenergized former champion!

Legendary motorcyclist, Peggy Llewellyn, is 46 years old and is still as fearless as ever and shows no sign of slowing down. In 2007, the San Antonio native became the first woman of color to win a professional motorsports competition at the NHRA POWERade Dallas event. That season, she finished fourth overall and held the highest place for a woman in the Pro Stock Motorcycle class. And in 2010, she became the first woman of color to own, operate, and race for a professional motorsports team. If that’s not impressive enough, Llewellyn is still training to break more barriers and continue to inspire more women of color to enjoy the sport that she loves. Pretty fitting for a two-time Women’s Sports Foundation honoree. Llewellyn has been a rule breaker since she was seven, learning to race among boys as a young girl. She never believed she could actually be a professional racer because she never saw women on the track. But luckily, it was her father who encouraged her to do something that was way out of the norm. Listen in as we talk about her identity as a Mexican-Jamaican woman, what it means to be “the first” and how society has welcomed (and dismissed) the tomboys of the world. Also: Just a heads up. This is the last Rule Breakers episode of what was a phenomenal series of interviews. Anya and I are busy working on other projects so you guys should check them out! Anya going off to focus on her work with Major League Girls and her golf reporting (BBC and LPGA); I’m going to continue writing for the Shadow League with my #BlackGirlStrength column and covering women’s sports. We want to thank everyone who has listened to Rule Breakers over the past year. We truly appreciate your support in engaging in these important conversations. Until next time!
