It was an eventful year with a lot of traveling which is mirrored in an extended and varied soundtrack. There's a lot of music packed into this episode. You'll hear a beginning in the UK followed by a 3-month sojourn to Chicago. It was a great place to discover the real America and I spent a lot of time listening to Q101 while driving around the Chicagoland suburbs. My 3-month work permit meant I had to return to the UK for the summer. That meant more music and the final recording of Hostile Implant. That was sad to say goodbye to as a more permanent move kicked-off in the fall. My new office was in New Jersey on the east coast but my first assignment was on the west coast just north of LA in California. Starting to get some idea of scale, the east coast of the US is closer to the UK than it is to the west coast! But the year starts in cold and wet Dudley in the West Midlands...

Alex Ross is one of the most celebrated artists in the history of comic books; his breathtaking painted covers and interiors are simply unmatched. He breathes life into every character he puts on the page, showing us what these characters would look like if they actually walked among us. I've been lucky to interview Alex a few times through the years. The first time was waaaaay back when I worked at Q101 (the first time around). I also did a piece on him for Time Out Chicago several years ago and interviewed him for a pre-Car Con Carne podcast I hosted called "Stun." It was a pleasure to sit down with him in a Mazda CX-9 (Thanks, Autobarn Mazda of Evanston) to talk about his current museum exhibit ("Marvelocity: The Art of Alex Ross" in Libertyville) and... What is the state of the comic book industry? Where does Alex Ross fit in to the industry? The impact of comic book movies on the comic book industry. Is "The Rock" the right guy to play Black Adam? The ascent of Alex Ross in the 90s. "The most radical thing I could do is just draw things to look normal." Alex's work on "Unbreakable" and "Glass": What's his relationship with M. Night Shyamalan? Could I be a life model for his work? My phone overheated and killed the Facebook Live feed. Alex riffs on some of his most famous works: Marvels, Kingdom Come, etc. The new "Marvels" comic that's on the way. Alex's accidental career advice. May 2014 introduces Jeff Craven to the Tahanan family. Very few people can make a claim to success like Jeff Craven. As DJ and Label Owner, he has left an indelible mark on the world of Dance Music. His format and business model for the great Large Music has been copied many times over, a fact that Jeff wryly considers to be "the highest form of flattery." Jeff Craven began spinning records in the summer of 1988 while a student in St. Louis Missouri. His format then was always eclectic, playing alternative records from bands like Front 242 and Nitzer Ebb with the occasional House record thrown into the mix. Jeff's love of Chicago House eventually took over, however, and he moved to Chicago in 1990. While making the rounds as a DJ in Chicago clubs during the early 90’s, Jeff found that many Chicago House music artists were struggling to have their music heard. Jeff started his own record label, Large, to feature this fresh crop of Chicago talent. With an artist roster including such luminaries as DJ Sneak, Roy Davis Jr., and DJ Rasoul, Large Music soon became the most prominent and influential House music label in the universe. Large Music’s shining rise to commercial success came in the fall of 1998 when Roy Davis Jr.’s hit single “Gabriel” hit the UK Pop Top 20. A slew of hits followed after that from Kerri Chandler, Miguel Migs, and newcomer Dennis Ferrer. Throughout this period, Jeff maintained a street level credibility with Large, releasing classic records that continued to push the underground sensibility of House Music. As a DJ, Jeff has played all over the world including Germany, Canada, France, England and Sweden. He was the opening DJ for jazz legend Herbie Hancock in Stockholm, and has played alongside Blue Note recording artist St. Germain at the Moulin Rouge in Paris. He has also appeared in almost every major club in Chicago including Smart Bar, Red Dog, Zentra, Spy Bar, Big Wig and Lava Lounge. Jeff has appeared on numerous radio programs including London’s infamous Kiss FM, Radio FG in Paris, and Chicago’s very own Q101. His DJ style has been described as “soulful” and “jazzy” with a slight influence of techno. Tracklist 1. Nacho Marco- Middays- Madhouse Promo 2. Seraphina, Molly, and Ziggy are BACK to the podcasting world and ready to fill your ears with a ton of nonsensical bullshit. On this episode, we talk about the Phelps family, a radical group of religious bigots who plan on boycotting a 30 Seconds to Mars show the trio plans on attending. They also cover pathetic childhood stories, why Chicago has the best music scene, and how Q101 should endorse this podcast. (Just kidding) We also give a huge shout out to a few Chi-Town Peeps: Q101 Chicago's Alternative: http://www.q101.com/ Tim Virgin: http://twitter.com/timvirgin Abe Kanan and his amazing podcast folk: http://abeisawesome.com/ Ryan Manno: http://www.ryanmanno.com/ JBTV: http://www.jbtvonline.com/ We also mention Tyler Glenn from Neon Trees: http://twitter.com/tylerinacoma The Shout out Louds: http://www.shoutoutlouds.com/ Lights: http://www.iamlights.com/ The Gaslight Anthem: http://gaslightanthem.com/
