The Lakonia was launched in 1929 as the Johan van Oldenbarnevelt (JVO) of the Netherlands Line as an ocean liner, servicing the route between Europe and the Dutch East Indies. After being converted to a troop ship during World War 2, she returned to passenger service until 1963, when she was sold to the Greek Line. The JVO was refurbished and renamed as the Lakonia, then relaunched as a cruise ship. In December of 1963, the ship was en route from Southampton, England to the Canary Islands with over over 1000 passengers and crew when a fire broke out in the hair salon, caused by faulty wiring. A slow response by the ship's crew, contradictory orders, and faulty lifeboats resulted in the deaths of 128 people. Mike Vinopal, Director of Education, and Joel Frieders, Director of public policy, for Hope for the Day return to Car Con Carne. They've been regular guests since the beginning of the pandemic for good reason. The need to talk about mental health and suicide is always vitally important, but certainly feels more so in 2020. What I like about Mike and Joel is they're not clinical or preachy when talking about mental health and suicide. They're honest and engaging communicators who listen, inform and speak on a welcome, personal level. Thanks to C&H Financial Services for sponsoring this episode. Robyn Hitchcock is unique by any estimation. It's not just his songwriting, lyrics, world view and effortless charisma... it's also that he's managed to release consistently solid music for decades, up through and beyond 2017's self-titled album. This is wholly anomalous in the industry. I mean, even the Stones crapped out after "Some Girls," and Bowie got kinda sketchy for a while after "Scary Monsters." Hitchcock has known no such hiccups. He's long been a favorite songwriter of mine, so having him on Car Con Carne is something of a dream come true. If you're new to his music and want recommendations so you can start spiraling down the Hitchcock rabbit hole, email me. I'm only too happy to share playlists and song suggestions. Discussed on the show this week, presented by the Autobarn Mazda of Evanston: After seeing him play at SPACE the night before, we talked about the benefits of changing up the live setlist every night: "Songs are with you for life. I've bottled bits of my life like a firefly in a jar that doesn't suffocate ... like a gif, if you want to look at things in Instagram terms... " How Robyn approaches a setlist for Chicago fans: "I don't think there were that many casual listeners. They would know the arcane stuff." Robyn's live music history in Chicago, from Lounge Ax and Metro to the Vic, Thalia Hall, SPACE and all venues in between. What's in a name? When it comes to "alternative," it's impossible to answer. R.E.M.'s early enthusiasm for Robyn Hitchcock. Robyn and Jonathan Richman: They're characters. Robyn's cover of Psychedelic Furs' "Ghost In You": What did Psychedelic Furs think of it? Robyn's take on the "carcass" of the music industry, and his perception of how things are working in the present day. The albums from Robyn's "commercial" period on A&M: Why aren't they streamable? And go ahead and rip them if you want to hear them. Knowing how articulate Robyn is, is it safe to assume he always has his face in a book? The secret to enjoying Shakespeare? Booze. I rattle off a list of favorite Hitchcock songs and get his impressions and stories behind each. He goes deep into what informed "Goodnight Oslo" and the critical importance of Peter Buck's guitar on "Flesh Number One." "Dislocated state" is the new best way to describe one's disposition while partying. Robyn's music basically has "two and a half settings." Could Robyn see himself often dreaming of L trains? Jason (or JVo) has played with literally millions of bands. Literally. Not bad for a guy who started out playing upside-down acoustic guitar, idolizing KISS. We catch up on his latest projects (a disco band, for one). He takes us through his early days (you won't believe what happened at his first gig). We discuss his love of metal, jazz and the bass. And he lays down some deep thoughts on listening, leaving space and how it all fits together.

This is the right idea at the right time for the Chicago music scene, and I couldn't have been more impressed with what they've already managed to do with their business. The joy of running this kind of business. Everyone wants to hug the Smashed Plastic owners. Pressing vinyl: The "high cost" perception vs. the reasonable reality. How long is the process from idea to pressed records? What makes records so damn appealing? Would Smashed Plastic ever branch out to other states? Spoiler warning: NOPE. Stavros from Chicago metal band The Atlas Moth joins me for hedonistic, belly-stretching, food-challenge-worthy indulgence at one of Car Con Carne's favorite places on earth: EPIC DELI. In this fine episode (brought to you by Boost Mobile), Stavros and I talk about: The evolution of Atlas Moth, from doom metal to its present sound The weird time in history when Atlas Moth got off the ground Stavros's "love/hate" relationship with social media The Atlas Moth's music release strategy The Atlas Moth's place in the music world: "We've always gone against the grain." Stavros's wrestling fan history (he went to Wrestlemania II and VI!) Hulk Hogan's real issue isn't racism, it's ... Why Epic Deli's food is a good old donkey punch. The classic book "How to Draw the Marvel Way" Round Two of food could "very well be the death of us." Stavros's "amuse-bouche" approach to dining at Epic. "Try the JVO; I'm delicious!" "This is going down way too easy..." "It's like a breakfast that hates you back." Stavros's comic book collection "Cheesecake is a way more intense cake." "I would wear leggings right now." Stavros's concern about his browser history, should he not survive the meal. Fruity Pebbles milkshake? "Get the f*** out of here..." My Jesse "The Body" Ventura moment (waaaay back during his AWA days). The people who I hope picked up a methamphetamine habit. Beware of what gets sucked off near the end of the episode! The mysteries of bubble tea. Tyler Wildey, Epic Deli owner, jumps in throughout the show for conversation... and to feed us some of Epic's best food creations including: Pickle chips with garlic dill sauce Loaded tots The Atlas Moth sandwich The JVO sandwich The "Rocky Balboa" sandwich (Epic Deli's spin on a Philly Cheesesteak) One of the weekly specials that has two 1/4 burgers, bacon, maple bacon cream cheese, a fried egg and more... sandwiched between two donuts-turned-into-waffles Milkshakes! This week, Boost Mobile presents Chicago rockabilly/doo-wop/soul band Them Guilty Aces on Car Con Carne. Somehow, I managed to cram four band members and myself into the Mazda 3. Things got a little tricker when the band played two songs (which are utterly fantastic and you'll hear them toward the end of the show). We recorded this week's show in the parking lot of venerable hot dog joint Gene & Jude's. We talked about: My confession. There might have been a snack hot dog before the band arrived. Them Guilty Aces history: What got them hooked into rockabilly? How the band knows they're doing a good job on stage. The danger of sport peppers. Their relationship with the Chicago music scene The Boost Mobile Social Media Message of the Week comes from listener Vic! And then there are the songs: So. Good. Stick through the entire show to hear "Jawbreaker" and "Last Straw" ("it's a happy song")!
Hot Doug's: The Movie is coming, and the guys behind the documentary are fantastically talented old friends of mine, Chris and Nick Markos. Along with the titular Hot Doug, Chris and Nick jumped in my car for gyros at Hub’s (You like-a the juice? The juice is good, eh?). We talked about Hot Doug’s history, Hot Doug’s: The Movie and… *Snack hot dogs: The value of getting an extra one for the road. *”Sausage keeps a man young”... “I saw that movie.” *”What makes people wait in line for a couple hours to go to a restaurant?” *Alinea. How does that prestigious restaurant fit in the conversation? *We’re all 15-year-old boys: “I never get tired of the sausage double entendre” *Hot Doug’s stand at Wrigley Field: “Did they give you a ring?”*Doug’s favorite exotic sausage *Doug hasn’t seen the documentary yet, but he’s fine with it “as long as the dogfight scene is taken out.” *What was Nick thinking when he ordered chili? *Hot Doug’s: The Movie themes of community, fandom and family *The “R.I.P. Hot Doug’s” tattoo *What’s the only thing Doug misses about running a restaurant? *Doug knew his clients by name: Senator, chief, doctor *My embarrassing sweet bread story from Spago Be sure to check out Car Con Carne's videos on YouTube, now powered by Boost Mobile’s unlimited data (and a Samsung Galaxy S8).
PRESENTED BY BOOST MOBILE I love Doll Skin (Sydney Dolezal, Alex Snowden, Nicole Rich, Meghan Herring). They have great music, hooks, harmonies and swagger. It was a pleasure meeting them in Crest Hill before their Bada Brew gig in mid-May. We covered a lot in a short time, including: Trying to appease the vegetarians in the band. How was I to know one was allergic to avocado? Eating on the road: It sucks. Not-so-lady-like burping on the microphone. My delay in punching up details on Facebook for the Boost Mobile live stream. It's an age thing. Clearly. How they started, and how they were taken under David Ellefson's wing. No big deal there... he's only in MEGADETH. Ellefson's advice? "Always say yes" Why is Dave Mustaine scary? My sad confession: "I've never worried about the guys in Megadeth listening to this." The new (and anticipated) Doll Skin album "Manic Pixie Dream Girl." The Boost Mobile Social Media Message of the Week gets to the bottom of why Car Con Carne doesn't go to the suburbs as often.
Rejected headline/episode quote: "That guy was masturbating in my dad's suit." My guest this week is Brant McCrea, writer and star of the indie horror/sci-fi film Chicago Rot (available for streaming at the usual places). We eat tacos from Yoli's, where the cook handles all the tacos with his bare hands! It doesn't bother McCrea at all as he says, "I am a dirty person." We talk about Chicago Rot, to which I comment, "I don't know what your movie is... it's nuts." McCrea replies, "(it's) too scary to be an art film, but too artsy to be a horror film." Also on this week's show: There's an early horchata casualty. We talk about his beard: "I hide cigarettes in there." The challenge creatives face when hustling for money. The sleazy motel that served as a key location for the movie (hookers! drug dealers! voodoo practitioners!). The stunning first-time talent of co-star Shira Barber. McCrea's acting challenges: "You're like Harrison Ford in 'The Fugitive.'" The Boost Mobile Social Media Message of the Week from listener Steve Krok Check out the tour of the Rot Shop from Brant McCrea! Car Con Carne is proudly sponsored by Boost Mobile!
Jason Schultejann and Kaustubh Pandav of Lucky Boys Confusion jump in the Mazda 3 for a trip to Fatso's Last Stand (2258 W Chicago Ave, Chicago, IL 60622). We talked about: *Their record release show at HOB (it was "inspiring" and "elevated") *The art of communicating on stage *LBC history ("You guys have been through some shit") *How the band's evolution led to the new album "Stormchasers" *The biggest thing in making good music? It's not what you think. *Producer Johnny K.'s involvement with the band *Impossibly thin band member Adam Krier *The songwriting process: Like a reverse "ascent of man" *A review of my history with LBC *Lucky Boys Confusion's record industry experiences in the late 90s/early 00s *Late bandmember Joe Sell: What would he think of the new album and the band's perseverance? And the whole thing ends with an in-car performance of "Stormchaser!"
My favorite restaurant on earth is Epic Deli (2616 Schaid Ct, McHenry, IL 60050). I couldn't resist going there with Josh Caterer of Smoking Popes, who recently helped create the "Smoking Pope" sandwich for Epic. Our plan for the night was for me to try a Smoking Pope and for him to eat a JVO. It sounds weird, but it's not. We accomplished our goal, but ate a lot more than planned. A LOT MORE. And we have Tyler Wildey, owner (and former CCC guest), to thank. He kept bringing us Epic Deli food to try. It was too much for any stomach to contain, but we approached the challenge with the courage and fortitude of Olympic medalists. Everything was stupidly, wonderfully delicious. And I was adequately full for a full 24 hours afterward. Before we ate, Josh played some songs in the backseat of the Mazda 3: An acoustic version of the "Car Con Carne" theme song, the new Smoking Popes song "Simmer Down" and the Jackson Mud song "It's Nothing." This is a fun one with some of my favorite people. Hope you enjoy listening!
This week's episode finds the Mazda 3 in Grayslake, IL for BBQ'D, a barbecue joint recommended by guest Tyler Wildey. Tyler's the man behind the insane sandwich shop Epic Deli, located in Johnsburg, IL. If you're looking to keep your New Year's Resolutions, don't go there. Or go there and live a little, for Christ's sake. During the show, you'll learn about the "disturbing" thing Epic Deli no longer does. Tyler also talks about how sales are going for the "JVO" sandwich, and what went into making the memorial "Lemmy" sandwich. Also: Has Car Con Carne finally been recognized in public? It may have happened during the recording of this show. Color us optimistic.
Ep81 - Burger King is asking McDonald's to join forces to create a "McWhopper". The Oxford Dictionary releases its list of added words. Woman buried alive only to be dug up and die for real shortly after. Epic Deli is now serving the 'JVO'! Music from BoxSet and a lot more! Do you have any favorite web comics? We mention a few we dig and talk about some new talents (to us). We also discuss JVO’s Q101 book (more on that next week) and dig into The Comics Reporter’s list of the 10 Least Influential People in Comics. Also, Patrick edited this episode while simultaneously listening to the new Lindsey Buckingham live CD ONE MAN SHOW (which is SO amazing) so, you know, keep that in mind while listening…
The Challengers website has been streamlined. Comic shop employees make terrible Club Members. Macho Man Randy Savage died (sad). Our pal JVO wrote a book. I guess this episode description is just a string of sentences. Also, that ‘peasant joke’ is actually about lepers and is from an MST3K Hercules movie. “The lepers are revolting!” “I’ll say!”
