Wow, we love David Tamarkin so much, and this is such a great interview. We're old friends and have been reading David since he worked at Time Out Chicago and Epicurious—and he's now the editorial director at King Arthur Baking Company. How did an award-winning journalist end up working for Big Flour? It's easy. The guy likes to bake. We talk about the job, a new cookbook King Arthur Baking just released, and look back at the time David was perhaps a little too snarky, a little too tough, on restaurants while working as a restaurant critic. He also talks about the 100%-employee-owned model at King Arthur and how that culture is baked (ha) into everything the company does. David is always welcome on the show, and we enjoyed catching up with him.We also have a great conversion with the writer Tarajia Morrell and hear about the very special book she has written, Savor: A Chef's Hunger For More. It's a collaboration with the chef and Top Chef fan favorite Fatima Ali. We talk about writing a book with somebody with only months to live. This is a really touching and human talk about loss and legacy and should not be missed.More from David Tamarkin and Tarajia Morrell:Vanquish the Bananas [The Occasional Tamarkin]Inside David Tamarkin's Kitchen [Epicurious]King Arthur Baking School [official]TASTE Podcast 34: David Tamarkin [TASTE]A Memoir From a Young Chef Who Fought to the Bitter End [New York Times]
Vladimir Caamano and Hollie Harper visit Friends and discuss what it means to have Queen behavior in tense moments and more with host Marina Franklin. Vladimir Caamano - With the name “Vladimir,” few people expect a Dominican from The Bronx to take the stage. His comedic style is the fruit of an immigrant Dominican family living in the cultural mecca that is New York City and is described as an elegant combination of urban grit and intellect. He began polishing his wit in the concrete jungles of The Bronx and Washington Heights and after graduating from Wesleyan University launched into Stand Up Comedy. After his stand out performance at Just for Laughs (JFL) in 2015, Vlad entered into a put pilot development deal to co-write, and star in a pilot based off of his comedy for NBC with Bill Lawrence and WB supervising. Vlad co-wrote the script with UNDATEABLE writer, Adam Styzikiel and recently shot the pilot directed by Phill Lewis. Vlad was the only one of his New Faces class to be chosen to perform as part of the CW Gala hosted by Howie Mandel. In 2016, Vlad was named one of the Top 10 Comics to Watch by Variety and was honored at JFL. In 2017 Vlad made his late-night standup debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and performed again at the prestigious Just for Laughs Gala hosted by Lilly Singh. Vlad has been seen on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Marvel's Runaways, and NBC's Superstore. He is currently developing television shows with top comedy producers and networks. Anjelah Johnson-Reyes is currently one of the most successful stand-up comics touring today, selling out theaters and clubs across the country. Well, not today, because global pandemic, but today-adjacent. Maxim Magazine hailed the comedian and actress as “uproariously funny” (weird they didn't write “unapologetically sexy,” but okay), and Time Out Chicago described her shows as “filled with almost non-stop laughter.”Anjelah, born and raised in San Jose and of Mexican and Native American descent, has guest starred on shows such as Superstore, The Shield, Ugly Betty, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and About a Boy. She has also appeared in such films as Enough Said, Our Family Wedding, and Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, as well as voicing a role in The Book of Life. After a stint as a professional cheerleader for the Oakland Raiders, Anjelah became an Internet sensation with her viral video, “Nail Salon.” That same year she joined the cast of MADtv as a series regular, which spawned another Internet sensation, “Bon Qui Qui.” This original character, a disgruntled fast food employee with no filter, has been viewed by over 85 million people worldwide. We review the documentary Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11 which you can catch on Vice TV on Sept. 8th, just a few days before the 20th anniversary of the 2001 attacks. The documentary features interviews with comedians including David Cross, Gilbert Godfried, Janeane Garofolo, and Marc Maron about the struggle to re-establish humor's place in the aftermath of the attacks that day. The film explores how stand-up comedians, Broadway performers, late-night hosts, and Saturday Night Live helped audiences laugh even in the darkest of days. Our guest is Julie Seabaugh the director, executive producer, and story editor of Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11.Too Soon premieres on VICE TV September 8 at 9 p.m. and will be repeating numerous times thereafter. (VICE TV is available via all major satellite and cable providers and the VICE TV app via iOS, Android, Apple TV, Roku, and Chromecast.)Julie Seabaugh grew up on a farm in rural Missouri and discovered stand-up when Dave Attell performed during her senior year of college. Way back in 2003, she founded and edited the criminally ahead of its time print and online comedy magazine Two Drink Minimum. Now the only full-time freelance comedy journalist in the United States, she's contributed to The New York Times, Rolling Stone, The Hollywood Reporter, GQ, Variety, The A.V. Club, The Village Voice, The Huffington Post, Spin, Playboy, Vulture, Paste, Time Out New York, Time Out Chicago, and numerous other alt-weeklies. Seabaugh's coverage of modern roasting culminated in the 2018 book Ringside at Roast Battle: The First Five Years of L.A.'s Fight Club for Comedians, and her love of Mitch Hedberg led to producing/hosting 2020's Hope on Top: A Mitch Hedberg Oral History for SiriusXM's Comedy Central Channel (available to stream via the SiriusXM app). With Emmy-nominated director and editor Nick Scown, she is currently producing the documentary Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11. Participants include David Cross, Janeane Garofalo, Gilbert Gottfried, Lewis Black, Darrell Hammond, Doug Stanhope, and Marc Maron; the film's 2021 release will mark the twentieth anniversary of the attacks. Among her career highlights, simultaneous Bridget Everett Village Voice and Roast Battle L.A. Weekly cover stories ran on both sides of the country the week of September 8, 2014. Interviewees over the years include Carl Reiner, Christopher Guest, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Joan Rivers, George Carlin, Don Rickles, Eddie Izzard, Drew Carey, Howie Mandel, Jimmy Kimmel, Key & Peele, Judd Apatow, Lily Tomlin, Mitch Hedberg, Seth Meyers, Wanda Sykes, and Zach Galifianakis. Having previously served as A&E staff writer at Las Vegas Weekly, Seabaugh won a 2015 Nevada Press Association Award for a cover profile tracing the downward health spiral of The Amazing Johnathan. “It's obvious the author is a wordsmith,” judges wrote. “Every sentence is well thought out. It's full of lively adjectives and truly paints a picture of what the Amazing Johnathan looks like, what he's experiencing and how he got to his current state. I felt like he was sitting next to me, boisterously telling his story.”For nearly two decades Seabaugh has covered, judged, and moderated panels at festivals including the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Just for Laughs Montreal, SXSW, San Francisco Sketchfest, New York Comedy Festival, Just for Laughs Toronto, Sasquatch, Grand Rapids' Gilda's LaughFest, Montana's Big Sky Comedy Festival, Austin's Moontower, Portland's Bridgetown, the Seattle International Comedy Competition, Riot L.A., Nashville's Wild West Comedy Festival, and Atlanta's Laughing Skull.Follow Julie on:Twitter: @julieseabaughFollow us on:Twitter: @supdocpodcastInstagram: @supdocpodcastFacebook: @supdocpodcastsign up for our mailing listAnd you can show your support to Sup Doc by donating on Patreon.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Photo credit: Cedric Angeles Reoccurring themes of technology and the manipulation of nature can be found in Brian Guidry’s paintings and installations. Guidry's paintings range visually from compressed lines of color to abstract eruptions. The artist synthesizes color, sound and texture to create “digitized” or “dissolved landscapes,” using a specific color palette sampled from a variety of natural sources. The injection of these “natural” colors into geometric planes and constructions creates shapes and voids suggestive of portals or slips in time, leading the viewer over the precipice of the normal, into the magical realism of the uncanny, peculiar and quantum. Brian Guidry lives and works in South Louisiana. He received his BFA from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He received his MFA in Painting from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Selected exhibitions include; The Bronx Museum in New York; Gana Art Space, Seoul, Korea; the Odgen Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans; The Contemporary Art Center in New Orleans and the National Collage of Arts in Lahore, Pakistan. His work has been featured and discussed in Time Out Chicago, ArtForum, The Times-Picayune, Gambit Weekly, Pelican Bomb, The New York Times, and New American Paintings. His work is in the collections of the New Orleans Museum of Art; The Odgen Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans, LA.; National College of Arts--Lahore, Pakistan; New York Public Library, New York, NY; Pratt Institute Library, Brooklyn, NY; and Paul & Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum, Lafayette, LA. Alex Ross is one of the most celebrated artists in the history of comic books; his breathtaking painted covers and interiors are simply unmatched. He breathes life into every character he puts on the page, showing us what these characters would look like if they actually walked among us. I've been lucky to interview Alex a few times through the years. The first time was waaaaay back when I worked at Q101 (the first time around). I also did a piece on him for Time Out Chicago several years ago and interviewed him for a pre-Car Con Carne podcast I hosted called "Stun." It was a pleasure to sit down with him in a Mazda CX-9 (Thanks, Autobarn Mazda of Evanston) to talk about his current museum exhibit ("Marvelocity: The Art of Alex Ross" in Libertyville) and... What is the state of the comic book industry? Where does Alex Ross fit in to the industry? The impact of comic book movies on the comic book industry. Is "The Rock" the right guy to play Black Adam? The ascent of Alex Ross in the 90s. "The most radical thing I could do is just draw things to look normal." Alex's work on "Unbreakable" and "Glass": What's his relationship with M. Night Shyamalan? Could I be a life model for his work? My phone overheated and killed the Facebook Live feed. Alex riffs on some of his most famous works: Marvels, Kingdom Come, etc. The new "Marvels" comic that's on the way. Alex's accidental career advice.
Welcome to the Hall of Faces, The Spool's monthly TV podcast! A spinoff of the short-lived Consequence of Sound podcast TV Party, Hall of Faces sees hosts and TV critics Allison Shoemaker and Clint Worthington build up a pantheon of television's greatest characters, one show at a time. For our very first episode, Allison and Clint are joined by guests Kate Kulzick of The Televerse and Kris Vire, formerly of Time Out Chicago, to talk about Tina Fey's incredible NBC sitcom 30 Rock! Running from 2006 to 2013, 30 Rock offered up a witty, satirical spin on Fey's tenure as head writer of Saturday Night Live, quickly turning into one of TV comedy's most consistent and uproarious joke delivery systems. Warping the ins and outs of a sketch comedy show set in 30 Rockefeller Plaza into high-concept farce of the highest order, Fey and co. also managed to craft a cast of TV's most wonderful characters, from Fey's high-strung Liz Lemon, to Tracy Morgan's gut-bustingly bizarre star Tracy Jordan, to Alec Baldwin's hard-edged ultracapitalist Jack Donaghy. Which character makes the cut? Liz? Jack? Jenna Maroney? Kenneth Parcell? Tangiers, the super-gay lion? Take a listen and find out! Hall of Faces is a proud member of the Chicago Podcast Coop. “This notion of balance is this unrealistic thing we’re all striving toward. If you allow yourself to know that and believe that, it takes some of the pressure off.” —Liz Plosser When you picture an editor in chief of a major women’s magazine, your mind probably goes right to Miranda Priestly of The Devil Wears Prada fame. Now picture the opposite — someone brilliant, kind, caring, and passionate in the most upbeat, positive way — and you have Women’s Health editor in chief Liz Plosser. Liz was named EIC of Women’s Health at the beginning of 2018, and her rise to the role wasn’t fueled by fate. Liz, who grew up in Kansas City, MO, worked her marathoning booty off to get to where she is today. After starting out as an investment banking analyst, Liz followed her dreams (literally) and moved into publishing. She started out at Self, and rose through the ranks at Time Out Chicago, Cosmopolitan, Well+Good, Canyon Ranch, SoulCycle, and more. On this episode, Liz discusses the challenges and perks of her job, talks about being a busy mom of three, and shares why she’s proud to be a “nice girl.” Enjoy, and wish Liz luck before she lines up at the start of the Popular Brooklyn Half next weekend! For this bonus episode, we asked Time Out Chicago theater critic Kris Vire to tell us what was a-happenin' with NBC's excellent addition to the live televised musical canon, Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert. Kris and Allison get into what worked (hint: a lot!), what didn't, and how well Ben Daniels' Pontius Pilate would do on RuPaul's Drag Race. We also wax rhapsodic about Brandon Victor Dixon, Sara Bareilles, John Legend, John Legend's cheekbones, and the rest of this (mostly) excellent cast.Worried we might not have enough expertise musically? Everything's alright, yes, everything's fine, because the great Kate Kulzick joins us to discuss the orchestration in "Gesthemane," among other things. Thanks to Kris and Kate for joining us, and thanks to costume designer Paul Tazewell for all those deep v-necks. Learn more about your ad choices. Blood, procured from a slaughterhouse, is the primary medium in Jordan's works. Through his experimental, invented process, he encases blood in plexiglass and UV resin. This preservation technique permanently retains the organic material's natural colors, patterns, and textures. The works become relics of that which was once living, embodying transformation, regeneration and an allegory of death to life. Jordan uses various mark-making methods, including layering the blood at different densities as well as heating, burning, and aging the material. Copper, a conductor of electricity, is sometimes mixed with the blood, imparting a unique, fiery energy. Blood-soaked gauze, stretched over the surface, creates another textural layer that serves as a map of memory and homage to ancient wrapping rituals. In some instances, blood that has decomposed for years forms dense masses that are ground into dust and tossed into the works, as a sign of passing and change. When lit, the works become translucent, cast shadows, and project a glow, appearing as if they are illuminated from within. The materials and luminosity in these bodies of work relate to themes of corporeality, mortality, spirituality, and science—invigorating blood as sublime. A 1999 graduate of New York University, Jordan's work has been exhibited extensively throughout the US and can be found in important collections throughout the country. The New York Times, Time Magazine, New York Magazine, the Huffington Post, Time Out Chicago, The San Francisco Examiner and countless other media outlets have featured Jordan and his striking paintings.
Coming all the way from Great Britain to the purple mountains majesty of WZRD Chicago, Chips For The Poor fills yer ears with their gleefully demented shrieks and yelps atop steady catchy thumpin bass, an infectious drum machine, and noisy dual-attack guitars that help add a squirm to yer dance step. “…skronky piss-taking racket-makers Chips for the Poor […] at times recall the austerity of Wire crossed with the primitive devil-may-care chaos of the Fall.” — Time Out Chicago, March 2011 [3/10/11] www.facebook.com/ChipsForThePoor www.chipsforthepoor.com/ http://wzrdchicago.org

TIME OUT CHICAGO MAGAZINE Disco Unusual Social Club DJ Mixed By Lono Brazil(Disco Unusual Social Club) Clubs Time Out Chicago / Issue 198 : Dec 11–17, 2008 He’s so Unusual Lono Brazil revives the spirit of the Loft in Bucktown. LOFTY GOALS Expert party-thrower Lono Brazil digs disco. Photo: Marzena Abrahamik The most reliably tasteful dance party in the city, Disco Unusual Social Club, has been running for just over a year now. Indie kids pack the compact Danny’s Tavern floor to the distinctive bass lines of disco edits while DJ Lono Brazil blows whistles and passes out tambourines. Things get a little nuts. “I’ve been lucky. Most of the things I’ve dreamt about, I’ve been able to do,” says fortysomething Gold Coaster Brazil without exaggeration. Raised in the South Shore/Windsor Park section of Chicago, Brazil spent much of the ’80s as a downtown New York personality, throwing parties with Pete Rock and Red Alert for Russell Simmons and Def Jam Records in New York, England and Tokyo. At the suggestion of his chums the Beastie Boys, Capitol-EMI hired him as a marketing director, then label executive. When he wasn’t exploring the dance halls of Kingston with Mad Cobra or working in the studio with Foxy Brown, he was picking up prominent DJ and modeling gigs. Brazil’s latest venture, the monthly DUSC at Danny’s, comes out of his life as a fervent clubber—which began at Tree of Life Health Spa’s disco on 95th and Jeffery in 1981. Brazil worked his way to the Warehouse (U.S. Studio) where Frankie Knuckles was making electronic-dance history. “That did it for me. I found my place and my music,” Brazil says. In mid-’80s Manhattan, Brazil stayed up all night at the Loft and indulged in dance marathons at the Paradise Garage. Over the course of the ’90s, Brazil was a resident at Tokyo megaclub Gold’s and hosted the popular Global Village radio show, bringing Fela Kuti and Nuyorican Soul to Los Angeles listeners on Monday mornings. Yet, he considers deejaying only a sideline. Back in Chicago, Brazil returned to party throwing with the Urban Renewal Project at Sonotheque, focusing on Afro, Latin and nu-jazz. Burned out on hip-hop a decade ago, he’s based DUSC on a passion for the free-ranging underground sounds of his early club years. He even sports a David & Nicky & Larry & Frankie T-shirt celebrating his DJ muses. It’s not just disco music; it’s the disco era he’s after. Brazil cites David Mancuso, the curator of seminal ’70s spot the Loft, as a role model. “I don’t say I’m a DJ; I say I’m a music host—the music, the place, the people are all a part of it,” he says. Like Mancuso, Brazil looks for an eclectic mix of music-focused people, not the look-at-me crowd that fancies bottle-service joints. At boho neighborhood joint Danny’s, he’s found his niche. The vinyl-oriented programmers there even allow Brazil to use his Serato and laptop rig. Paradise Garage great Larry Levan’s free-ranging style provides a stylistic sonic template—Brazil spins vintage dance music, mostly pre-’84 material, not just disco but also Italo, mutant disco and classics from the Prelude and West End labels, along with disco edits and nu-disco from Lee Douglas, perhaps with an Obama speech layered on top. Like Levan, he doesn’t fuss over beat matching. The night’s overarching mantra comes courtesy of Mancuso himself, says Brazil: “Disco just means come ready to dance.” Sweat it out at Disco Unusual Social Club every 2nd Saturday at 10pm at Danny’s in Bucktown and venues around the world.
