Well welcome to this week's episode of #ForWhatitsWorthwithBlakeMelnick, called #LivingtheImpossibleDream part 2, in our music series called #PasstheJam, with my guest Canadian music icon @Blair PackhamIn part 1, we discussed Blair's early career as a singer / songwriter, the founding of his band, #TheJitters. Those heady days in the late 1980s, where they opened for Heart, the Kinks, The Byrds, and played large venues, both here in Canada and abroad. We heard about his time in the studio and the various personalities he worked with over the years. Blair shared some great stories about his time as a radio show host with CFRB and Q107 and the guests he interviewed over those years.  And in particular, his favourite interview, the soulful Solomon Burke. We concluded the episode with a discussion about Blair's passion for teaching songwriting. In this episode we pick up from where we left off, and then focus on Blair's songs and his soon to be released new record called #SongFood.  We will be joined by current artist in residence, @OliverMcQuaid who will take a deep dive into the art of songwriting with Blair, and help me to  #PasstheJam.  I hope you enjoy this episode  ...For What it's WorthAnd if you like the show please share it out to your networks, and consider making a small donation to the cause by buying us a coffee, using the Support the Show linkThe Music for Today's Show,  "You, Ya You"  and "The Land we Knew by Heart" is written and performed by Blair Packham along with his band, #ImpossibleDream Click HERE to visit the Blog post for this episode and learn more about Blair.Other Important Links:Show website - https://fwiw.buzzsprout.comShow Blog - https://forwhatitsworthpodcast.comLink to Show Trailer: https://fwiw.buzzsprout.com/1151660/4138862-for-what-it-s-worth-trailerLink to For What it's Worth Face Book group page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/720335292207376Link to Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/forwhatitsworth.podcast/Knowledge Management Institute of Canada From those who know to those who need to knowBuzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! In this episode I start off by saying that its shorter than part 1. well it ended up being longer and I hope you like it as much as I enjoyed talking about the subject. Question 107: What is the Lord’s Supper? Answer: The Lord’s Supper is a holy ordinance of the church. By eating bread and drinking the cup according to Christ’s appointment we show forth his death. Those who eat and drink in a worthy manner partake of Christ’s body and blood, not physically, but spiritually in that by faith they are nourished with the benefits he purchased, and grow in grace. Scripture: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26; 10:16. Question 108: What is required to the worthy receiving of the Lord’s Supper? Answer: It is required of those who would worthily (that is, suitably) partake of the Lord’s Supper, that they examine themselves--of their knowledge, that they discern the Lord’s body; their faith, that they feed upon him; and their repentance, love, and new obedience; lest, coming unworthily, they eat and drink judgment to themselves. Scripture: 1 Corinthians 5:8; 11:27-31; 2 Corinthians 13:5.

Lili Wexu is a voice actress based in Los Angeles but started in Montreal. You might say this is all Howard Stern's fault. Back in the late 90's Howard Stern was syndicated to Q107 in Toronto and CHOM in Montreal. The result for the former was a failed venture, the latter was a near disaster. CHOM's longtime competitor at the time was Mix 96, who courted disenfranchised francophones to their station but using Lili as imaging talent. Rob Braide was general manager at Mix 96 and had been apart of a bilingual era at CHOM in the 70's where French and English co-existed in harmony on one frequency. Lili grew her business with the help of afternoon Drive personality and voiceover talent Rob Wreford who mentored her.In this episode, we hear about Lili's evolution through the voice industry and discuss how it has changed throughout the years. She also provides us with some incredible tips and tricks to steer through the tricky world of voiceover in 2020. Jimmy Lynn on what went into his decision to stay in Our Town after grad school ~ "When I was coming out of AU after grad school, a couple mentors pulled me aside and said, you think you might need to move to New York or LA? I wasn't sure. And they said, you might be a small fish in a big pond. Why not stay here in DC where you can be a big fish in a medium sized pond." Jimmy Lynn, Entrepreneur, Servant Leader and Georgetown Professor and host Andy Ockershausen in studio interview Andy Ockershausen: This is Our Town. This is Andy Ockershausen. And this is such, I say this in all sincerity, a great, great opportunity and a pleasure to talk to a friend for many, many years. At one time, a big part of WMAL radio. Things have changed, Jimmy. The big days that you and I grew up are gone. But to have you in this studio to me is special and Jimmy Lynn, welcome to Our Town. Jimmy Lynn: Thank you, Andy. It's so great to be back to see you. To see Janice. To be back at the studios from back in the 80s when WMAL and Q107 were the kings of media. Andy Ockershausen: Jimmy, at one time we were the kings of media and we're still ... And Janice is the queen of media now. Jimmy Lynn: We know that. Andy Ockershausen: But Jimmy, if you recall, and I know you do, you got started in the business here. You were fortunate at the time as I was, because I started as you did. I started at the bottom and worked my way down. And you have done so much with your life and I want to talk about it but your DC career, to me, is special. You're a local guy that grew up here and made something out of being a local. Doing Business in Our Town – Big Fish, Medium Pond Jimmy Lynn: Yeah. No, that was very important to me. When I was coming out of AU after grad school, a couple mentors pulled me aside and said, you think you might need to move to New York or LA? I wasn't sure. And they said, you might be a small fish in a big pond. Why not stay here in DC where you can be a big fish in a medium sized pond. And you and Charlie Brotman told me the importance of networking and relationship building, shaking hands, and once you look someone in the eye to do business. So they said stay in DC. You're going to make friends. You're going to business together. You're going to celebrate together. You're going to go to funerals together. You have a chance to become the old boy network which you and Charlie were. Andy Ockershausen: Well, Jimmy, you're so right. And I had an opportunity yesterday to talk to a bunch of young people in something called Leadership Greater Washington. I happened to be one of the founders of the organization in 1986 and '87 was our first class. Nothing has changed, Jimmy. That's over 30 some years ago and it's still networking, getting around, connect the dots. There's no secret to be a success. Show up. Return your phone calls. Andy O, Jr. Jimmy Lynn: I don't think I've told you this but a couple of people have told me, Jimmy, you have one of the top five or top 10 rolodexes in the DC business community. And people used to call me Andy O, Jr. I always took that as a big compliment because you were the most connected guy in town. Andy Ockershausen: Well, because, I still use the old Rolodex. I can't use this thing that you have, Jimmy. And Janice does it. Ken does it. But I'm a dead duck. I can't do it. But my Rolodex is important to my life because I pop up names on there that I haven't talked to in years and suddenly there they are in my Rolodex. And people use me for references and I appreciate it so much. But Jimmy you learned the lesson. But learning it is one thing, executing it in which you did, your career, I never understood what a double alumnus is. American University Communications and Marketing Jimmy Lynn: I went to American University. I have my Communication degree as undergrad and then MBA in Marketing. Andy Ockershausen: I went to American University myself when I was an intern at WMAL.

Christian Scarlato officially began his education career in 2005. He always had a love of children's theatre and a large portion of his first career was in the performance arts. Christian was working with all ages writing and directing published and original works.  He spent time on air and in promotions at Toronto's Rock Radio station Q107. He also co-created education programs where schools came to the station to tour and meet radio DJs, the tech team and other vital members of the Q team. From there, Christian found his way to Famous People Players Theatre where he had his first opportunity to work with individuals with special needs.  This rewarding time with FPP lead to Christian making a partnership with his own theatre company, Christian Scarlato Productions, and Community Living York South. This was the first time Christian collaborated with special needs adults and children to write and direct their own works.  Once a year, Community Living would perform these creations at the Vaughan City Playhouse. It was then that Christian decided to become a teacher and, over the past decade and a half, has applied these skills to the elementary classroom and in many extra curricular activities where student voice “rings louder than thunder”.  Christian recently became ordained as a minister and founded Hands in Harmony Ministries where he continues to use the performance arts as a therapeutic method to relieve anxiety, especially around public speaking and socialization.

Today I get to drop this wonderful conversation I had with Neil Crone. I don’t think I was prepared for how relaxed and fun it was going to be to speak with Neil. I always love when I meet someone for the first time and my first thought is, “this is going to be fun!” Neil is someone who has been through his fair share of “Schtuff” but has not let his challenges darken the lens with which he views the world. Instead, he is someone who uses his experiences as a way to reach out and connect with others to shine a light on what bonds us to together as humans and propel us forward into the very things that paralyze us. Neil does this with his writing, improv, acting and motivational speaking, but I have a feeling, after speaking with Neil, it is just how he shows up in the world.   Some of the things we cover in this episode are, What his biggest challenge as an artist has been, as someone who studied and performed in improv what is the most valuable takeaway he has brought with him into other areas of his life and what major change he would like to see happen in the entertainment industry.   A little about Neil: Neil is an actor and writer who lives in a town so small everybody knows where everyone else’s birthmarks are.  He has performed in dozens of television and radio commercials, TV shows and is the voice of numerous cartoon characters every Saturday morning, including ‘The Ridonculous Race’, ‘Ella’ and the upcoming ‘Kody Kapow!’  His most current television and feature film roles include a guest starring appearance in ‘Rogue’, ‘Murdoch Mysteries’,   ‘Remedy’, ‘The Strain’, ‘One Starry Christmas’ , and the soon to be released, ‘Bon Cop Bad Cop 2’ and Stephen Kings ‘It’. He also enjoyed six seasons playing the role of Radio Redneck Fred Tupper in CBC’s hit sit-com ‘Little Mosque on the Prairie’ and two seasons of Family Channel’s ‘Really Me’. A Second City Mainstage alumnus, Neil has been performing improvised and sketch comedy for over twenty years and is the recipient of a Canadian Comedy Award for Best Radio Comedy for his work as ‘Bad Santa’ on Q107’s Derringer in the Morning. When not performing, Neil is busy writing; as an award-winning weekly humour columnist for Metroland papers, and a contributor to numerous publications including Zoomer Magazine, Ontario Out of Doors, Dogs in Canada and ACTRA Magazine. His books; ‘Semi-Colon; A Writers cheeky journey through Colo-rectal Cancer’, “Who Farted?’ – Stories in Verse for big and little kids” and “The Farmers Secret Midnight Dance” and his first collection of syndicated columns “Enter Laughing – The Early Years” are currently available at major bookstores. Neil is a cancer survivor and is a National Spokesperson for both the Colo-rectal Cancer Association of Canada and Colon Cancer Canada.  He is available as a motivational speaker, focusing on the power of laughter in healing.  When Neil grows up he wants to be an Astronaut.    https://www.thisischelseajohnson.com/

I spoke to Steve about his early days at John Abbott College on Montreal's West Island, to his time at 980 CKGM and then down the 401 to work for Gary Slaight at Toronto's Q107. As I spoke to Steve, I learned a few things about the broadcaster that others had told me about. He is loyal, but never to a fault. And the number of other broadcasters he has mentored along the way. We spoke for an hour but we could have gone three. No there is no book in the future but he did hint and some other ventures that are coming. One name that came up during the show was that of Rob Braide. He also played a role in getting another MuchMusic VJ's career started, Erica Ehm. You can seem that video from Boom 97's 97 Seconds Series. Fast forward a few months and Corus renovates their airwaves and Kolter is now co-hosting the afternoon drive show on Edge 102 with Meredith Geddes. The story of how that show came to fruition is as every bit compelling as his journey from Dawson Creek to Dubai with his wife Dominque. It is also difficult to discuss Dubai without bringing up the late Tim Klassen who worked at Channel 4 in Dubai and became a fixture there. Danny Kingsbury is the National format director of Rock Radio for Rogers, and the first question is all about Rock Radio. In this episode we discussed his 30 plus years in radio, especially about his years at Q107 which were the last ones before the era of online streaming and the birth of digital. During the chat I was reminded about the success of Y95 in Hamilton which happened concurrently with his stint at Q, and that time the Leafs moved to FM and aired their games on Q107. As format lead for the rock stations, he led the initiative to rebrand all the rock stations to Gord-FM after the passing of the Tragically Hip's Good Downie. We also found time to talk about life, including his trip to Korea to the Olympics and how he has grown an appreciation for blogging. Check out his blog here. I couldn't help but mention that he's had the opportunity to work with Andy Frost in two different cities, and hire two generations of morning personalities in Scruff Connors and his son TJ.This episode is brought to you by nLogic. Announcement: Terrence Shulman, overspending/hoarding/shoplifting therapist joins #MOTM tonight at 8p ET! Tonight on #MOTM, Terence Shulman, founder and Director of The Shulman Center for Compulsive Theft, Spending and Hoarding joins Dr. Peter Sacco and Todd Miller to discuss the definitions of these mental health disorders, how they impact people in the real world, and the various services the Shulman Center offers, both in person and via Skype to overcome their problems. According to the Journal of Consumer Research, 25 million Americans may be compulsive over shoppers and spenders! According to the FBI, Employee theft is “the fastest growing crime in America!” And I think we’ve all watched one of those hoarding shows like “Buried Alive” that shows someone living in conditions where they are absolutely in danger of being crushed by piles of things they’ve collected over the years. Excessive hoarding and cluttering can take over and make you feel out of control. Millions of people suffer from this frustration and embarrassment. And as Terrence says on the show, this is not about a hobby like stamp or record collecting, or even fashion shopping. When the shopping becomes the thrill, then there is a serious problem. And the holidays can exacerbate the situation of finding the perfect present at ANY cost. Join us tonight as we delve into these tricky conditions. We're proud to be doing our rock and roll duty with this week's show. Mike has a chance to chat with the one and only Kim Mitchell - songwriter, killer guitar player, radio host, and a whole lot more. His latest release is 2007's Ain't Life Amazing (it is), though he's out on the road right now for a string of dates and you can hear him regularly on Q107. One particularly funny anecdote involves the ever-talked-about Bob Dylan. Tune in for that. Then, in the return of CM Academy, we'll speak with Aaron Jensen, the artistic director behind the third annual edition of Sing! The Toronto Vocal Arts Festival. Acts like The Nylons, The Kinsey Sicks, Alan Frew of Glass Tiger, Dan Hill, and many others are part of the programming, which includes not only a capella performances, but also daily workshops on vocal technique, the busienss of music, and more.

Recently, Toronto's classic rock station Q107 decided to do a shift in the music they play. Added to their classic rock playlist were the hits of the 90s like Nirvana, Soundgarden and Temple of the Dog. Most surprisingly, 'classic rock sounding' hits of the 2010s also made it into the playlist, like Black Keys and The Sheepdogs. What does this mean for rock radio in Toronto, where several stations are already playing modern rock music, and now more and more stations are playing similar songs. And...what's going on with rock radio in general? Radio Dale is the podcast about music, musicians and the Canadian music industry from our unique perspective at the Dale Speaking offices. We help bring indie and established acts to radio, and spread the word online, as well as develop their careers in today's ever-changing music business. This podcast gives away some of our best information for free, and serves as the 'radio show' the broadcast the ideas, observations and insights we discover every day working with Canadian and International artists. THE EPISODE: THIS WEEK IN MUSIC HISTORY: ...nothing compares to Sinead O'Connor! Discovered and shared from http://thisdayinmusic.com WHO CHARTED! ...the Whitehorse CBC Searchlight regional finalists! ROO'S 60 SECOND TIP: ...your Facebook Fan Page! FEATURED SONG: We helped this band get to their first #1 hit in Canada despite having no radio support from the USA! Canada has adopted this amazing American rock band, and they're back with a new single. It's Rival Sons with 'Open My Eyes' from their upcoming album 'Great Western Valkyrie.' ROUNDTABLE: Q107, The Edge, Indie88, Y108, The Rock, HTZ Fm...although not all in Toronto, depending where you live in the city you can tune into most or all of these rock stations. It used to be that switching to Q meant switching back in time, and you wouldn't hear the hits of the 90s, 2000s and 2010s. Recently, everything changed. You 'might' hear Black Keys on all six of these stations now. What does that mean for rock radio in Toronto? And what does it say about rock in Toronto in general? ---- THE MUSIC: Rival Sons - Open My Eyes (Feature) Web: http://rivalsons.com Polite Fiction - Come A Little Closer (Intro) Web: http://politefiction.bandcamp.com Gloryhound - Let You Down Again (behind This Week In Music History) Web: http://gloryhoundband.com Toob - Sweet Harmony (behind This Week On The Charts) Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/toob-music Elise LeGrow - No Good Woman (First segment of opening theme) RADIO DALE LOGOS courtesy of /r/picrequests on Reddit.
