Ray Mabus served as the 75th United States Secretary of the Navy, the longest to serve as leader of the Navy and Marine Corps since World War I. Secretary Mabus is a Navy veteran himself, having served two years in the Navy as a surface warfare officer from 1970 to 1972 aboard the cruiser USS Little Rock (CLG-4), achieving the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. Ray Mabus has been Secretary of the US Navy, Governor, Ambassador and CEO. As Secretary during President Obama's Administration, he revolutionized the Navy and Marine Corps, opening all jobs to women, aggressively moving to alternative energy as a warfighting measure, building more than twice as many ships during his term than in the preceding eight years and developing the Gulf Coast Restoration Plan after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. It was during his watch that Navy SEALs killed Osama bin Laden. Among many awards, he received the Martin Luther King, Jr. Social Responsibility Award and was chosen as one of the top fifty CEOs in America by GlassDoor, the only government person picked. From 1988 to 1992, Mabus served as Governor of Mississippi, the youngest elected to that office in more than 150 years. Mississippi experienced record growth in jobs, education, tourism and exports. Mabus was United States Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from 1994-1996. He was CEO of a public company from 2006-2007 leading it out of bankruptcy in less than a year while paying all creditors in full and saving equity. Today, Mabus is on the board of two public companies, Hilton and Virgin Galactic, where he is Chair. In addition, he is a board member of InStride, a public benefit education company, the founder of Mabus Group, a consulting organization, and a board member or advisor to several other companies. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Explorers Club, and the Screen Actors Guild. He serves on the boards of the Environmental Defense Fund and Jose Andreas' World Central Kitchen and the advisory board for the National Medal of Honor Museum.  He has thrown out the first pitch at all 30 major league ballparks. He has stood on both poles and, during his life, has traveled to more than 190 countries and territories. Secretary Mabus is a native of Ackerman, Mississippi, and received a Bachelor's Degree, summa cum laude, from the University of Mississippi, a Master's Degree from Johns Hopkins University, and a Law Degree, magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School. The war in Ukraine grows longer and bloodier. Military and civilian casualties mount by the hour as Russian forces press closer to the capital city of Kyiv. The United States has made clear it will not send troops to Eastern Europe at this time to battle the Russians. Nor will America or its allies declare a no-fly zone in Ukrainian airspace. But the West can take both short- and long-term steps to curtail Russian regional influence, and to diminish the Kremlin's supply of cash and resources. That's according to Ray Mabus. Mabus is the former Governor of Mississippi; he's also former U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia, and the former Secretary of the Navy. When it comes down to it, we all have similar hopes for our future. We want financial security, a good education for our children, a strong career ahead of us, and overall we all want to know that we will be taken care of. When we place too much emphasis on only the issues that matter to us, we lose the sense of empathy and vision for the common good that is vital to our lives as engaged citizens. When we consider the scale of the issues in our country, these issues often become impersonal. How can we contribute to the well-being of our world and seek justice as public servants?Secretary Ray Mabus knows a good deal about the rigorous fight for the soul of our nation. Mabus, a Mississippi native, has been involved in the state, national, and international levels of politics. He has served as the Governor of Mississippi, the Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, and the Secretary of the Navy under President Obama. As the youngest person elected to serve as Mississippi's governor, Mabus understands the obstacles that come with devoting one's life to public service. He worked alongside Governor Winter to pass the first Education Reform Act in the country to ensure a bright future for Mississippi's children, and he opened all jobs in the Navy & Marines to women. He joins Eddie and Chris to discuss how to maintain strong relationships in politics, the struggles he faced as an up-and-coming politician, the commitment we all need to make to public service, the effect of his family's encouragement and wisdom, and the world he wants his daughters to thrive in. Mabus challenges us to act wisely on the current moment and consider the impact we can have wherever we are.Learn more about Ray Mabus hereRead about Mabus' gubernatorial campaign hereFollow Ray Mabus on social media:https://twitter.com/SECNAV75 https://twitter.com/themabusgroup/

The U.S. Navy protects our seas around the clock. But what else does the Navy do? It innovates – a lot. Ray Mabus, who was Secretary of the Navy under both Obama Administrations and held that post longer than anyone since World War I, created a fully green fleet during his tenure. Now, 65 percent of energy on navy bases around the world comes from non-fossil fuels. This week, The Cipher Brief’s Kaitlin Lavinder spends 15 minutes with Secretary Mabus, who was previously the Governor of Mississippi and U.S. Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. Here, he tells Kaitlin about other innovations in the Navy, like unmanned underwater vehicles that compete with Russia and China on underwater capabilities.

The Department of the Navy, led by Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, has in the past year made bold moves to change the way energy is used in its operational Navy and Marine forces, maintaining that our country dependency on fossil fuels constitutes a clear strategic and tactical vulnerability. Since announcing in October 2009 new energy targets that will dramatically increase the amount of alternative energy used in the Department by 2020, the Navy has flown a fighter jet, the Green Hornet, on a grain-based biofuel, awarded significant solar energy contracts throughout the Southwest, and signed agreements with the Department of Agriculture to pool their collective knowledge of renewable energy. These measures promise to be only the beginning of a decade-long campaign to reform the Navy energy infrastructure.Ray Mabus is the 75th United States Secretary of the Navy. As Secretary, he leads America Navy and Marine Corps and is responsible for conducting all the affairs of the Department of the Navy, including recruiting, organizing, supplying, equipping, training, and mobilizing. Prior to becoming Secretary of the Navy, Mabus served as Governor of Mississippi and Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. He was a Surface Warfare Officer in the U.S. Navy aboard the cruiser USS Little Rock.Hosted by the World Affairs Council of Northern California in partnership with the Marine Memorial Association.
