Each month, Still Becoming will bring you a story. These episodes are short, meditative, and combine music with story. Though the story is personal to me or someone else, the hope is that we can all have a moment to breathe, listen, and reflect on our own story as we listen. Story: Choose Other, You Don't Have to Fit A Box This month I am sharing a personal story and memory about how my dad would tell me and my brother to "choose other" if we didn't see a box that fit us. My hope is that as you listen to this short story, it would be a pause for you to honor your worth just as you are. And maybe that will mean choosing other, or choosing none, or choosing many, or making up your own category. Sass Jordan has one of the most powerful voices in all of rock and roll. The Canadian JUNO and Billboard Best Female Rock Vocalist award winner Sass Jordan recently released her new album, Rebel Moon Blues. Rebel Moon Blues charts a new course in Jordan's musical voyage while tracing her love of the blues back to its source. All killer and no filler, the album features the inimitably raspy rock goddess jubilantly celebrating the songs, sounds and styles of everyone from old masters like Willie Dixon, Elmore James and Freddie King to younger, louder guns like Gary Moore and Rory Gallagher. A pioneer of powerful, gritty female-fronted rock, Sass Jordan has worked alongside fellow greats like Aerosmith, the Rolling Stones, AC/DC, and Van Halen, among many more. She has toured with A Bowie Celebration, the critically acclaimed, one-of-a-kind roving tribute to the late legend, David Bowie, featuring a distinct alumni of former band mates. Born in Britain and raised in Montreal, Sass Jordan launched her solo career with the single “Tell Somebody” from her 1988 debut of the same name, garnering national acclaim and a JUNO Award for Most Promising Female Vocalist. Throughout her career, she’s earned three more nominations for Best Female Vocalist thanks to albums like Racine (1992), Rats (1994), Present (1997), Hot Gossip (2000), Get What You Give (2006), From Dusk Til Dawn (2009) and her side project S.U.N.'s album, Something Unto Nothing (2011) — along with singles like “Make You A Believer,” “You Don't Have to Remind Me,” “Sun's Gonna Rise” and 1992's “Trust in Me,” a duet with Joe Cocker from the record-selling Bodyguard soundtrack.
While you may think of Motown when you first hear Wilson Pickett, this sound is neither from Detroit or its counterpart from Philadelphia. This is from the deep south with the deep soul of the 2 M's - Memphis and Muscle Shoals. The Exciting Wilson Pickett was Pickett's third studio album and firmly established his credentials as one of the leading lights of Soul music. Pickett grew up in Alabama, and like many soul singers at the time he got his start in church. He had a contentious relationship with his mother who he described as "the baddest woman in my book." Eventually he went to live with his father - and further honed his singing style - in Detroit. Many tracks on this album were recorded at Muscle Shoals with a backup band called The Swampers. Lynyrd Skynyrd would cite them as they "were known to pick a song or two." The Swampers would tour with Pickett and form an interracial act during a time when this was unusual..Wilson Pickett was known by a number of names including "Wild Wilson" or "Wicked Pickett," and was known for his wild lifestyle. He would have a number of difficulties with alcohol and cocaine over the decades, which would put him in trouble with relationships and the law. Wilson Pickett was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.Wilson Pickett died of a heart attack in 2006, just weeks shy of his 65th birthday. The Land of 1,000 DancesThis song was a minor hit in 1963 for Chris, Kenner, but became a top 10 hit for Pickett. While he doesn't name 1,000 dances (and the name of the song never appears in the lyrics), he does name 16 including the Pony, The Mashed Potato, and The Twist. You may remember this song from the movie "Forrest Gump."Barefootin'The second track featured in today's podcast is also a remake (originally recorded by Robert Parker), with a faster tempo than the original. Check out that horn section by The Swampers.99-1/2 Won't DoThis is a slower track based off a gospel track transitioned to a love song. "I got to have all your love, night and day. Not just a little part, but all of your heart, sugar, Ninety-nine and a half just won't do."In the Midnight HourThis is a signature song he co-wrote, and also connects with gospel songs - I may meet Jesus soon in the morning, maybe in the midnight hour. This song was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically, or artistically significant." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series “Gilligan's Island”This comedy was current in 1966, but we all remember this from reruns on afternoon TV after school. STAFF PICKS:“Over Under Sideways Down” by The YardbirdsBruce brings us a song inspired by Rock Around the Clock by Haley and the Comets. It came out as a single in May 1966, and was on the charts at the time. That's Jeff Beck on the lead guitar, and he also plays bass on this track as well.“Sunny Afternoon” by The KinksRob's staff pick made it to #14 on the Billboard charts. Brothers Ray and Dave Davies formed The Kinks in 1964, and Ray Davies wrote this song. It is about the massive taxes that the British Labour party was pushing out under Harold Wilson.“You Don't Have to Say You Love Me” by Dusty SpringfieldBrian's staff pick features his favorite female vocalist from the 1960's. Springfield heard this tune originally in Italian, and had new lyrics written for it. She cried when she first heard this song with the new lyrics. A number of artists covered this song, including Elvis Presley.“Sweet Young Thing” by The Chocolate WatchbandWayne features an American garage band from California, who sing about a Peeping Tom spotting his “sweet young thing” at a party. Wayne found this group off a compilation album called Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era 1965-1968. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:“Jeff's Boogie” by The YardbirdsThis instrumental from the B-side of “Over Under Sideways Down” wraps us up this week's podcast.

As soon as the theatres shut down, the King Lear memes started. Over and over, people urged us not to bemoan our sudden retreat to our houses because Shakespeare wrote King Lear during the plague. This was meant to encourage us to believe that it might be highly productive to be sent home. Instead, it gave a lot of people anxiety about having to produce a masterpiece while navigating the challenges of social distancing. I suspect some historical context might be useful and since most Shakespeare scholars are busy trying to figure out how to adapt their courses for Zoom, I thought I might offer some interim thoughts on this topic. Are you emotionally sober? Or are you getting drunk on fear, resentment, avoidance, and resistance? Despite the title, this episode is FOR ALL OF YOU BEAUTIFUL CREATORS, not just those who have/have had problems with substance. In these uncertain and fearful times, we are all prone to the desire to numb ourselves. I'm talking about how we use all kinds of substances to NUMB ourselves to unwanted feelings about situations and people. Through my example, I refer to my drug of choice, alcohol, as my numbing agent, but understand that yours may be completely different. It may be food, TV, sex, anything that you use in an unhealthy way to avoid living life on life's terms. We're going to uncover what that is for you in this episode, plus figure out what the UNDERLYING BELIEFS are behind your resistance. “Leadership is service, not position.” -Tim Fargo I used to have a boss that would warn me about the world and that, in order to succeed, you sometimes had to be cut-throat. That kind of thought process was beyond me and I never thought his advice to be very good (about that and many other things). On this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Jonathan Keyser. Jonathan is the author of the book, You Don't Have to Be Ruthless to Win, and we talk about a different model of succeeding in today's tough environment. A model of service towards others and helping them achieve. It was a great conversation with a guy that not only talks about service to others, he walks it everyday! I had so much fun talking with him and I know you'll love it too! CHEERS! More on Jonathan... Jonathan Keyser is the founder and thought leader behind Keyser, the largest occupier services commercial real estate brokerage rm in Arizona. Through sheer determination and focus on selfless service, Jonathan is disrupting the commercial real estate (CRE) industry, and beyond. An Inc. 5000 company, Keyser has rapidly become one of the fastest growing firms of its kind in the country, serving companies and their real estate needs globally. Award winning and nationally recognized, Keyser is an active member of the Forbes Real Estate Council, voted Top 10 Best Places to Work multiple years running, and is a proud Host Company for Conscious Capitalism. When Jonathan entered the cut-throat, dog-eat-dog world of CRE brokerage, he became the worst version of himself and hated himself because of it. Then one day, Jonathan decided he’d had enough. He realized he was sacrificing his values in pursuit of success. He abandoned his ruthless ways and reinvented himself as a selfless leader, which skyrocketed his brokerage firm to eight figures in five years. His selfless service approach to business has resonated with corporations and individuals seeking a competitive edge to acquiring and maintaining clients. Jonathan's best-selling book You Don't Have to Be Ruthless to Win and online Keyser Institute courses inspire others to activate selflessness in their life and see how and why this counterintuitive strategy can create extraordinary, long-term success. On the personal side, Jonathan prioritizes family first. Alongside his wife Susanna, he is a loving and devoted father to his four children. Jonathan is extremely committed to personal development and self-improvement and stays active with mountain/water sports, spin, and hiking. Connect with him (AND BUY THE BOOK) HERE!

As an over achiever, Jonathan joined the cutthroat world of Commercial Real Estate, and decided to become one of the most ruthless in the game. Everything changed in a chance break out session at a conference. After that chance encounter, he undid his entire business and focused on “helping people.” The difference between “giving to get,” and being in love with helping people. Why are we “one way” with our family and friends, than feel the need to be different in “business.?” The difference between deprivation and self-control. In America, if you make $6,700, you'll spend $6,700. If you make $34,000, you'll spend $34,000. And if you make $275,000, you'll spend $275,000. That's because, in America, lifestyle CHASES income. But when you live that way, you have NO MARGIN. No ability to pay for a broken water heater or (auto) water pump. No ability to be generous when you encounter a need. You DON'T HAVE to live that way! You can HAVE financial margin!
You Don't Have to be Special for God to save you and to use you to be a blessing.
Dusty tog gruppens navn som sit eget, og i 1963 bragede hun igennem i både Europa og USA med ‘I Only Want to Be With You'. Playliste:1. The Springfields: Silver Threads and Golden Needles (1962) 2. I Only Want to Be with You (1963)3. Stay Awhile (1964)4. For my inaugural episode I sat down with Jonathan Keyser. He's an incredible success story - a two-time best-selling author and owner of Keyser Company – named one of Inc. Magazine’s Fastest Growing Private Companies. Jonathan created Keyser Company with the idea in mind of selfless service for others. It's a concept he learned years ago, and has found tremendous personal growth and success of his business and foundation, The Keyser Institute. Jonathan's latest book, You Don't Have to Be Ruthless to Win, is a fantastic book that demonstrates how you can activate selflessness in your life, and how it can create extraordinary, long-term success in your own business. Jonathan's book is endorsed by Governor of Arizona Doug Ducey, John Mackey, CEO of Whole Foods, and Keith Ferrazzi, New York Times Bestselling author. I sat down with Jonathan and asked about how his mindset changed from one of being about personal financial success and what it meant to his company. Some of the questions we dive into are; How did your core values change? How does this selfless strategy weigh on your time and how do you create a strategy to balance the increase of time on you personally? How do you identify people who adopt or already have a similar philosophy? With the philosophy of treating your staff like family, how do you fire "family"? What are the calls-to-action for entrepreneurs to implement in their business? Who were the people who helped you get to where you are? We'll talk about Carol Dweck's book, Growth Mindset being instrumental for both of us and John Ruhlin's book Giftology, and the influence that it had on Jonathan. This is our inaugural episode. I hope you enjoyed it! PLEASE give me your feedback - there are a few ways you can do it; Email us: rewiredmind@onwebpodcasts.com Call us and leave a message at: 602-824-8265 If you want more information about my company, Phoenix Staff, visit our website by clicking here. You Don't Have to Be Smart - You Only Have to Be Quiet One of the most challenging practice for most human beings is to be quiet with themselves, and to listen within the stillness for the wisdom of their inner guru. It’s even more challenging to be quiet when you’ve been stirred by someone or something, which leaves you feeling emotional, irritable and anxious. But, truly this is the very time required to slow down, quiet down, and be present to your wise-self. Prayer, Meditation and Listening I’ve heard it said that prayer is when you are talking with God, the Universe, Oneness, letting them know what it is you are wanting, what you are afraid of, and how you want support. Meditation is when you stop talking and be in a state of listening - tuning into your greater wisdom. I like this description! My experience is that when I’m more tuned into my emotions, my irritability, my anxiousness, I’m ignoring the words of wisdom that constantly flow to me and within me, especially when I need them most. Last night was a perfect example. I’d received an invitation to do a workshop in California on Aging Like a Guru. I love facilitating workshops, retreats and trainings, so this initially made me very excited. Then, I experienced an interesting sensation. I felt my heels digging in, and the rise of resistance. Rather than answering the invitation immediately with a “hell no, I won’t go,” which is what this part of me was communicating to me, I said to myself, “Okay, I’ve got some wisdom that I need to pay attention to. Just quiet down, relax, and just be with what is.” This morning I sat in quiet and listened to all aspects of myself and revealed my fear of losing freedoms to express my creativity and passion. If I take the opportunities to travel, do workshops and retreats, I’m afraid I won’t have the time to paint. However if I stay home to paint, I’m afraid I will lose the opportunity to express myself through the part of me that loves to facilitate and connect with people. It’s a dilemma. Making the time to be quiet and listen to my inner guru allows me to understand the anxiousness of potential change ahead of me. My reactions come from a part of me that believes I have to give something up to have something else. When I sit in my wisdom, I see how I can actually have everything I want, just the way I want it. I suspect that you are also challenged by these moments when emotional reactions want to dictate your next move. I encourage you to empower yourself to maybe slow down a bit and listen for the wisdom that you know is there for you. It's quite a big challenge, especially when you are feeling emotional and reactive + powerless to truly influence your circumstances. But if you can find that stillness, you will find your truth from the wisdom and intelligence of your own inner guru. And that my friends is what it's all about! - - - - For more blogs, books and videos, or if you are interesting in coaching or training with Dr. Rosie, check out her website: www.theparadigmshifts.com

Traditional American immigration lore tends to feature throngs of poor, huddled masses coming over from Europe, who eventually assimilated into American society, giving us green beer and pizza. Often left out of that story is an equally large migration coming to the West Coast from Asia - particularly China. For episode numero uno of You Don't Have to Yell, Professor K. Scott Wong of Williams College discusses how the experience of Chinese immigrants differed from their European counterparts, how the Chinese laid the groundwork for many of the legal battles on immigration today, and offers some parallels with today's immigration debate we can use as we determine the best path forward as a country.

In today’s episode, I sit down and chat with my friend and former client, Stu Smith. A fantastic designer and creative entrepreneur, working at Trello and based out of Austin, Texas with his wife (YellowBess), kids, and their dogs. During our interview we talk about a range of different topics from Stu’s college experience, us working together while he was at Able Lending and now his side hustles he’s been up to with his wife. Sit back and enjoy my chat with Stu. Nuggets of Wisdom: 1. You Don't Have to Go to Design School to Become a Designer. One common misconception is that if you go to college and want to become a designer (or go into any other creative profession) you have to get your degree in design. This is completely false. If there were a possibility to go back and redo college, I would have changed my path and gone for marketing or business (like Stu) instead. 2. Take Risks in Your Career. Especially if you're early in your career, take a risk. Take that job across the country or even in another country. Go out on the limb and start your own side hustle. You don't want to sit there, 10 years later full of regrets. 3. Sometimes You Have to Know When to Walk Away. Just like how Stu made the realization that he should close the doors on Sputnik, sometimes you have to know when its time to walk away and move on to the "next thing." We all have or will have those moments in careers and lives. I had that moment with my last job where I decided that I was going to leave and strike out on my own, but before I could make that move, it was made for me. Make that leap on your own terms, not someone else's. 4. Small Opportunities Can Lead to Bigger Ones Down the Road. You never know when a smaller opportunity may lead to a major one. Just like with Stu's work for the apartment complex, it started off with flyers and led to a $30,000 project. When you're starting out, take on those smaller projects and treat them like they're big dollar projects and clients. Part 2: Product First? Or Audience First? I talk about Strategy #2: Building an Audience First and THEN creating a product (ideally, productS) for that audience. Which is WAY easier said than done. And I'm also going to let you in on a little secret... that Strategy #1, which is Product First, Audience Next, and Strategy #2, which is Audience First, Product Next, are actually not mutually exclusive at all. You DON'T HAVE to choose just one or the other. You can actually do both. In fact, you MUST do both. But only in a certain order. And I'll talk about that in a second. Now to give you better context, I have to say this real quick about Strategy #1. The cool thing about Strategy #1, is that once you've accomplished that, then Strategy #2 - which is building an audience first - becomes kind of moot, because now you already have an existing audience who have already bought your first product. So creating additional products for an existing audience is going to be a lot easier than finding or building a new audience. I actually have a name for this: Go Deep, Then Wide. So when you find a niche where you have already created a product and you're starting to build up an audience in that niche, it is a lot easier to go deep into that niche, than to go wide, and start coming up with new niches that are unrelated to that product. Almost every single successful entrepreneur or company, almost always tends to go deep, before they go wide. Listen online at https://SubscribeMe.fm
My guest today has written an excellent new book called You Don't Have to Drive an Uber in Retirement: How to Maintain Your Lifestyle without Getting a Job or Cutting Corners. Marc Lichtenfeld is the Chief Income Strategist of The Oxford Club. He is the Senior Editor of The Oxford Income Letter, which is based on his proprietary 10-11-12 System. He is also the Editor of Tactical Trader Alert, Lightning Trend Trader and Chairman's Circle Breakout Alert. In his new book. Marc shares little known secrets for putting the gold in your golden years. Apparently nearly 50% of Americans are forced to work in retirement to supplement their incomes. So getting this stuff right is so important - unless of course you want to drive an uber in retirement. Here's my conversation with Marc Lichtenfeld, author of You Don't Have to Drive an Uber in Retirement, in episode 326 of Informed Choice Radio.

Literally, every pledge sends me into an excited squeal of delight. patreon.com/sgrpodcast Zena Sharman, editor of "The Remedy: Queer and Trans Voices on Health and Health Care," is here talking about queer and trans health issues, community-based care, and oppression within the medical community. We geek out about trauma-informed care and talk about why cis straight men are really suffering inside these systems, too, based on the statistics. What does it look like to have healthcare informed by community, disability justice, racial justice, fat justice, and trauma? Zena has some stories and amazing ideas to get the activist in all of us going. How do we start asking, "Who are you and what's important to you?" instead of assuming what kinds of care and cures someone might want? Change is on the horizon, but we need to start looking at different possibilities that include kinky folks and poly folks and people of color among so many other intersections of oppression. In this Episode 22: You Don't Have to Choose to Have MORE: *a misconception that people believe of having to choose between a great Marriage and happy family life OR being financially abundant and having a successful business life *the lie that you've been led to believe about this, and that maybe you should question it all *that Having it All in Life is by no means easy, but absolutely possible if you are willing to do the work (and P.S. you don't have to choose....you get it all!) MORE TIP: Grab a journal and write down the answer to these 2 questions: 1. WHAT do you want? In as much detail as possible, and don't censor, edit, or hold back in any way. 2. WHY do you want what you want? This must MOVE you emotionally. Today is a very special episode of Ask Altucher. Our original co-host, Aaron Brabham, is back for a long-overdue reunion. Aaron decided a few months ago to "choose himself." He moved from snowy Baltimore to sunny San Diego to work on the projects he loves. Copywriting has always been something he dabbled in, but now he has decided to dive in full time. He tells James and Claudia all about the art of copywriting. Aaron dives into the art of gives away a few of his best secrets. James then asks him what a "choose yourself" lifestyle really is, and Aaron shares his own path to living life on his own terms. He explains how he's living lifestyle – living, feeling, and earning like a millionaire. If you go to Aaron's website, , today, you can get his free report, "10 Strategies to Start Your First Business Today (Even if You Don't Have an Idea)." You'll be happy you did. Regards, David P.S. Hi, James here... My new book is finally out! It has taken me a year to put together all the skills I think are needed to create abundance in this new economy. I hope you write me with feedback and questions. Here's what the initial reviews on this book have said: "James Altucher did it again. I just finished and have to say it was a great read. Great insight into the future of wealth." "I couldn't wait for this book to come out. It was well worth the wait! Very short and jam-packed with good ideas and advice for the budding entrepreneur. A must read!" "This is the road map out. Very specific ideas to get you unstuck and to thrive in the 21st century. If you follow the ideas in this book you will receive 1000% or more in return on your investment." I'm really grateful for the response I've received so quickly. I feel we are quickly building a strong community of people who are deciding to "choose themselves." If you want to get the book exclusively in hardcover, plus several other special reports and a subscription to my brand-new newsletter, which is the equivalent of two additional chapters every month, claim your copy .

We're mobile again, on our way back from TEPSA and playing with our new toy, the iRig. We learned after the fact that our settings were not ideal. Next time will be better. We start off a little bit on a soapbox. But... we're probably preaching to the choir. Listen through to the end - we have free codes to give away for an excellent iPhone/iPod/iPad app!
