As Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs go into effect, a federal appeals court is deciding whether a bulk of Trump's tariffs are even legal. Neal Katyal joins The Weekend to discuss the legal challenge brought against the president's ability to set tariffs. The U.S. Senate voted to confirm Jeanine Pirro, a former Fox News host who has defended Trump for years, as U.S. attorney for Washington, DC. The news comes after the U.S .Office of Special Counsel announced it was launching an investigation into Jack Smith, the former special counsel who previously indicted President Donald Trump, over an alleged violation of the Hatch Act. Andrew Weissmann joins The Weekend to discuss the President's use of the DOJ.
Despite Donald Trump's claim of king-like powers to apply trade tariffs by his own whims, a lawsuit being heard in federal appeals court argues that he is asserting a power no president has, and his claims of emergency powers are contradicted by his myriad non-emergency excuses. Neal Katyal, who argued the case against Trump in court today, talks with Jen Psaki.
Stephanie Ruhle – in for Nicolle Wallace – on the stunning plea from the family of a survivor of Jeffrey Epstein, Trump's new tariffs going into effect tomorrow, and a new report highlighting the increased force used by immigration officers.Joined by: Lisa Rubin, Tim Miller, Kristy Greenberg, Ron Insana, Gene Sperling, Neal Katyal, Nicole Foy, Lee Gelernt, Michele Norris, Rick Stengel, and Michael Fanone.
Neal Katyal and Gurbir Grewal, lawyers who command well over $2,000 an hour for their services, are slashing their rates to defend two New Jersey municipalities against a Justice Department lawsuit over their "sancutary city" policies. This on its own would be noteworthy, but what makes it even more interesting is that their law firm—Manhattan-based Milbank LLP—reached a deal with the White House earlier this year, pledging $100 million in free legal services on shared focus areas to avoid getting hit with a punitive executive order. On this episode of On The Merits, Bloomberg Law reporter Alex Ebert talks about why the Justice Department is suing these cities, just how big of a discount they're getting from Milbank, and whether the work could prompt the White House to rip up its the deal with the firm. In this episode, Neil Katyal discusses the current election cycle, focusing on Kamala Harris's centrist approach and her empathetic leadership style. He emphasizes the importance of voting rights and electoral integrity, while also addressing the challenges of misinformation and trust in institutions like the Supreme Court. Neal reflects on his identity as an Indian American and how Kamala Harris' candidacy resonates with that experience, urging listeners to recognize the constitutional implications of the upcoming election. We're almost at election day here in the US, so these next few weeks on TRUST ME I KNOW WHAT I'm DOING , we're sharing a series of Lotus for POTUS conversations, hearing insights from leading edge voices to help inform and get out the vote! A few months ago, I created a meme with a photo of Vice President Harris that went “In Sanskrit, Kamala means Lotus… In America, Kamala means POTUS” and for me and many others, that sentiment sums up the urgent choice we're making at the highest level, being thoughtful about our past, present, and future. As the question of “what's at stake” is such an important one to keep asking ourselves, we also know that from the beginning there's been a swirl of tangled questions surrounding the “what ifs” in a very close race and also involving a convicted felon who has used the legal system as a vindictive bludgeoning tool against the free and safe election process. So particularly to help clarify some of these thoughts on the imperatives that we face, it was simply wonderful to chat with Neal Katyal, the former acting solicitor general of the United States. Neal is an attorney with expertise in constitutional, criminal, and intellectual property law, and along with his prior experiences in the Justice Department as a National Security Advisor, he has argued 51 cases before the Supreme Court of the United States, more than any other minority lawyer in history. He's had deep experiences in some of the most significant trials in our country's history over the past 25 years, including the George Floyd murder trial, defending the voting rights act of 1965, the Trump travel ban, military trials at Guantanamo, and the election dispute in 2000, just to name a few. Neal is a law professor at Georgetown, and along with being a respected scholar and prolific author, he seems to have won nearly every major legal award out there and thankfully is a frequent news commentator. He also hosts a great podcast called Courtside, designed help inform the public and help explain a variety of court cases. So in that spirit, it was great to catch up with him and talk about the upcoming election from his unique and superb perspective on Kamala Harris, and since he has mentioned in the past how he is an ardent believer in “extreme centrism”, I first wanted to know with this in mind what was making him feel optimistic about the Harris-Walz campaign.Remember, conversation is the antidote to apathy. Go to Iwillvote.com for information about resources, to desipresident.com and southasiansforharris2024.org, and to kamalaharris.com to learn directly about the Harris-Walz campaign. Please get involved, get engaged, and get informed about all your local issues and candidates up and down the ballot. Till next time, I'm Abhay Dandekar.

Jen is joined by Officer Harry Dunn and Michael Cohen, Trump's former lawyer, to discuss how Trump and his allies will try to steal the 2024 election, should he lose. Legal experts Neal Katyal and Andrew Weissmann talk about the Special Counsel's explosive new filing, which reveals Trump's abdication of duty on January 6th, among other things. Next, Jen explains how Trump is exploiting the victims of Hurricane Helene to demonize migrants, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg joins to discuss efforts to push back against MAGA-amplified falsehoods. Finally, Jen is joined by Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lavora Barnes and Oakland University student Marcus Johnson, whose keen understanding of civics made him the breakout star of a focus group on the Vice Presidential debate.Check out our social pages below:https://twitter.com/InsideWithPsakihttps://www.instagram.com/InsideWithPsaki/https://www.tiktok.com/@insidewithpsakihttps://www.msnbc.com/jen-psaki
