For most healthcare geeks, Andy Slavitt may be best known as the Former Acting Administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). For millions more, he is the podcast hero we didn't know we needed and the one we so clearly deserved as the host of Lemonada Media's award-winning podcast, "In The Bubble with Andy Slavitt."Launched just before the world went to shit in early 2020, In The Bubble became a literal voice of reason while we were sanitizing our Amazon boxes and fighting for toilet paper at Costco as if they were Cabbage Patch Kids in the 1980s. A weekly vocal elixir of sorts, Andy and his storied dry wit blended healthcare policy, layman's breakdowns, and human vulnerability with a healthy splash of entertainment thanks to such early guests as Tina Fey, Al Franken, and Matthew McConaughey. Each episode brought — and still brings —a little structure and sanity to an otherwise chaotic world. Today, Andy is currently USofCare Co-Founder and Board Chair Emeritus and still fighting the system for the benefit of all Americans to get less screwed by our broken healthcare system. In the Bubble has been on my Mount Rushmore of podcasts since day one. Welcome to the Health Marketing Collective, where strong leadership meets marketing excellence. In today's episode, we welcome back Jen Hovelsrud to join Sara Payne as co-host to discuss the power of executive thought leadership on social media, emphasizing the critical role it plays in the health industry. Jen Hovelsrud brings to light the importance of involving multiple voices on social media platforms, advocating for leadership diversity and representation. She also discusses prominent leaders such as Karen Lynch of CVS and Bryony Winn of Carillon Health Solutions, who engage authentically with their audiences. The conversation further explores how Dr. Sushan Jain of ScanHealth maintains a balanced online presence, focusing on genuine healthcare issues while minimizing overt company promotion. Sara underscores the natural transitions in executive careers, encouraging leaders to embrace these shifts without fear. The discussion navigates through Andy Slavitt's influential role during the COVID-19 pandemic and Dr. Angela Fusaro's effective use of video to connect with audiences, setting benchmarks for authentic social media engagement in the healthcare sector. Throughout the episode, both Jen and Sara emphasize the repercussions of not participating in social media thought leadership. They discuss how reduced visibility can dampen company influence while competitors gain an edge through active engagement. The conversation also highlights the growing trend of incorporating social media presence into hiring practices and the significance of building strong personal brands. Thank you for being part of the Health Marketing Collective, where strong leadership meets marketing excellence. The future of healthcare depends on it. Key Takeaways: Multi-Voice Engagement for Safety and Representation: Jen Hovelsrud highlights the importance of various leaders contributing to social media conversations. This approach ensures diverse perspectives, enhances representation, and provides a safer, more inclusive narrative for audiences. Embracing Career Transitions and Social Media Presence: Both Jen and Sara Payne recognize that executives often face natural career shifts. They advocate for leaders not to fear these changes but rather to leverage social media presence to maintain and enhance their influence. Authentic Leadership Engagement: Exemplary leaders like Karen Lynch, Bryony Winn, and Dr. Sushan Jain demonstrate how engaging on social media with authenticity about one's passions and industry issues can build trust and credibility. This form of engagement resonates more deeply with audiences compared to purely promotional content. Risk Management through Thought Leadership: Actively participating in thought leadership on social media mitigates the risk of invisibility and lost influence. Companies must understand that engaging online is not optional but a critical component for maintaining relevance and competing in the industry. Strategic Social Media Use for Executives: Effective thought leadership requires a well-devised strategy. Future leaders are encouraged to engage early, develop core beliefs, and consistently post industry-relevant content to build a stronger brand presence. Sara and Jen discuss the benefits of social media engagement, including increased trust, better sales outcomes, and more opportunities for public speaking and press interviews. Few people have had a closer look at the inner workings of our government than Andy Slavitt. In 2013, Slavitt oversaw the turnaround of healthcare.gov after its disastrous rollout. He then worked as Acting Administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) under President Barack Obama, which meant he was overseeing the Children's Health Insurance Program and the Health Insurance Marketplace, as well. In January of 2021, he was brought into the Biden administration as a Senior Pandemic Advisor to the Covid-19 pandemic response team — a role he stepped down from in June of 2021. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard Business School, Slavitt is now the founder and Board Chair Emeritus of United States Care, a national nonprofit health advocacy organization, and the founding partner of Town Hall Ventures, a health care firm focused on underrepresented communities. Perhaps most notably, Slavitt was one of the central figures of the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, which will be 15 years old next year. I wanted to talk to Slavitt about that anniversary, the state of health care in the U.S., his experience during the pandemic, and whether we are prepared for the next one. We may be politically divided, but when it comes to healthcare there is actually a lot we agree on as a nation. We want healthcare that is affordable. We want a healthcare system that is easy to understand and navigate. We want to know we will receive good care when we need it most. These insights are something our guest Natalie Davis takes to heart in her work at United States of Care. She and her team are fighting hard to help create a more dependable healthcare system for diverse and underserved Americans. We discuss:Why we should never use the term “value-based care” ever again.Braidwood vs. Becerra: The court case that may eliminate free preventive services for half of all Americans. The double whammy of US healthcare: system failures and personal shame. How to nurture listening and belonging on a team.Natalie says before you start listening, you need to consider who is being failed by the healthcare system and prioritize hearing their stories:“If we look at something like maternal health – which is a work that we're doing right now – if you look at the data, it is women of color, especially Black women who are left behind and facing a real failure of our system, which is causing morbidity and mortality. And so, for our organization, we are listening loudly to Black women and we are talking to people in communit[ies], we are talking in focus groups to really make sure we understand those issues. Because, if the people who are not served by this healthcare system are listened to and then served it will make the healthcare system function better for all of us.”Relevant LinksUnited States of Care's websiteUnited Solutions for CarePatient-First Care (a.k.a. Everyone needs access to quality, affordable health care regardless of health status, social need or income. To reach this paradigm shift, healthcare leaders must evangelize within industry and communities they serve. There is a better path forward for American health care – one that is people-centered and transformational; however, to get there we must unite the power of one at the intersection of people, policy, and politics. By listening to people's needs, jointly developing policy solutions, and partnering with others, we can ensure our health care system works for everyone. This week on the Race to Value, we bring to you Natalie Davis and Dr. Venice Haynes at the United States of Care, a nonprofit organization focused on an ambitious goal to achieve universal access to quality and affordable healthcare for all Americans. It brings together stakeholders from various backgrounds, including healthcare experts, patients, policymakers, and advocates, to develop and implement practical, bipartisan solutions to improve the healthcare system in the United States. By fostering dialogue and collaboration, conducting research, and advocating for policies that enhance access, lower costs, and improve healthcare outcomes, the organization finds common ground and works across party lines and ideological divides to address the healthcare challenges facing the nation. As CEO and Co-Founder of the United States of Care, Natalie Davis is on a mission to reshape and implement American health care policies that improves the lives of all people. Dr. Venice Haynes, the Director of Research & Community Engagement for United States of Care, is a social and behavioral scientist focused on an overarching research agenda to address social determinants of health and health disparities in underserved populations using qualitative and community-based participatory approaches. In this episode we talk about the tenets of patient-first care (a.k.a. value-based care) including affordability, dependability, personalization, and understandability. We also have an in-depth conversation on the power of storytelling in health care transformation and the imperative to overcome structural barriers in the creation of health equity. [FANBOY ALERT] For most healthcare geeks, Andy Slavitt may be best known as the Former Acting Administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Today, Andy is currently USofCare Co-Founder and Board Chair Emeritus and still fighting the system for the benefit of all Americans to get less screwed by our broken healthcare system,.In the Bubble has been on my Mount Rushmore of podcasts since day one. Censorship Podcast AgendaOverview: Throughout the pandemic, opponents of lockdowns, school closures, mask mandates, vaccine mandates, and other pandemic restrictions have felt the decks have been stacked against them in sharing their message on social media, especially Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, and YouTube.Detailed show notes of podcast:Early pandemic censorship* Zuckerburg email to Fauci offering to help* Aaron Ginn and AJ Kay censorship in March / April 2020. They both argued a hypothesis that covid had spread more widely than public health realized then, and that the infection fatality rate was likely lower than the case fatality rate. Medium censored their essays for being dangerous for public health.* In April 2020, Santa Clara study I went on NPR to explain the results. The reporter asked me if I was worried that people would intentionally seek out getting covid (e.g. covid parties).* In late April/May 2020, I gave an interview where I mentioned that contact tracing was largely useless given the mode and ease of spread of covid. The Stanford human subjects review board – for a study that had nothing to do with contact tracing – mentioned this interview as a potential human subjects violation in a bid to silence me.* In 2020 Ontario Canada, doctors who wrote about natural immunity on twitter (e.g. Dr. Kulvinder Gill) faced censure from medical boards with risk of losing license.* Heavy censorship of early treatment options in online settings. Discussion about whether this was appropriate. Some of the early results for cheap, safe drugs were promising. Why not let people try them for a disease that was deadly in older people?* The clear purpose of these censorship efforts was to create fear in the population and gain compliance regarding lockdown orders.Censorship of the GBD* GBD signed on October 2020* Collins email to Fauci / fringe epidemiology / devastating takedown* WHO says no such thing as herd immunity* Google deboosted search results / hit pieces came first* Facebook took down the GBD page for a week without explanation* Reddit slapped down accounts mentioning the GBD and limited discussion of it.Censorship and Propaganda in 2021* With the advent of the vaccine, propaganda and censorship efforts by governments intensified.* Government officials vastly overstated the results of the clinical trials re: infection blocking. This included Fauci, Walensky, etc.* Governments engaged celebrities. FB highilghted posts of young attractive people bragging about getting vaccinated early, even while millions of older people who would have benefited more did not get a vaccine until late.* DeSantis Roundtable March 2021. Masking children Youtube pulls the video* Severe censorship of vaccine discussion online (e.g. Alex Berenson on effectiveness of the vaccine vs. disease spread; Naomi Wolf on menstrual problems caused by the vax)* Twitter files blacklistGovernment Role in Censorship* As 2021 rolled on, the vaccine campaign fizzled out. The government turned to censorship and mandates to fix the problem.* In Berenson case government officials like Andy Slavitt directly wrote to Twitter to ban Alex.* Missouri vs. Biden. Dozen federal agencies involved in the censorship effort, including the White House, CDC, Office of the Surgeon General. The government threatened section 230 status. Direct line of communication from white house to twitter, FB regarding censsorship. Topics inlcuded true facts (e.g. ineffectiveness of vaccine at blocking infection).* Even the White House itself caught up in censorship J&J pause* Censorship efforts often informed by Stanford virality project & a “disinformation” team at the University of Washington* Use of AI algorithms, with word lists sent by the government, for widescale censorship* Roots of censorship apparatus linked to national security concerns. Obama signed “On Dec. 23, 2016, he signed into law the Countering Foreign Propaganda and Disinformation Act, which used the language of defending the homeland to launch an open-ended, offensive information war.”Government as #1 source of misinformation* Indiana AG letter* Overcounting covid cases* Questioning natural immunity* Covid vax prevents transmission* School closures effective and costless* Everone equally at risk of dying from covid infection* No policy alternative available to lockdown* Mask mandates effective in reducing covid spread* Mass asymptomatic testing and contact tracing effective in reducing covid spread* Eradication of covid is a feasible goal. Show Notes: John Driscoll is the President of Walgreens Boots Alliance and the co-host of the second largest healthcare podcast on YouTube, CareTalk. In this episode, host Will Bachman welcomed John to the show. John has extensive experience in the healthcare industry, having played a leading role in creating successful companies like MedCo, Surescripts, Oxford Health Plans, and Care Centrix. John discusses topics such as monkeypox, mask mandates, baby formula shortages, Silicon Valley Bank's failure, and healthcare related topics. He also shares his opinions on a variety of healthcare issues. The Future of Pharmacies John started his career in health care after being influenced by his mother, a nurse. After college, he developed housing programs for homeless and mentally ill people. He then became a management consultant, before moving to Asheville Health Plan. He has worked in multiple parts of the health industry spectrum, gaining experience in Medicare and Medicaid. He has found his career to be full of big and challenging problems, but is motivated to improve the world and create successful businesses. His main initiatives involve investing in Village MD, Summit, and Espadin Shield Specialty Pharmacy to show how an integrated pharmacy and clinical model can improve outcomes at lower cost. Walgreens is also working with health plans and has 9000 stores and 90,000 clinicians to provide access and convenience, trust, and traffic. Their goal is to become essential in healthcare by leveraging their expertise in retail and pharmacy services. He discusses how pharmacies can become better partners to health plans by taking advantage of their advantages in brand marketing, trust, convenience, and patient specificity. He shares a specific example of how a large regional health plan achieved a return rate of three times greater on colorectal screenings than before they partnered with the pharmacy. The pharmacy was also able to increase the rate of colorectal screenings up to 51% in underserved areas due to the support of non-clinical personnel in their stores. Additionally, the pharmacy is partnering with health plans to reduce admissions to nursing homes by 20% through nurse visits, follow-ups, and care navigation. The system leads to better patient and contact information. Overall, the pharmacy is providing an invaluable service in helping health plans lower costs while improving outcomes. He explains how his company invests in bespoke automation machines to allow pharmacists to spend more face-to-face time with patients, and how pharmacists could be more involved and take on more responsibility in the treatment of patients and how this would expand access to more care in an overburdened health system. Pharmaceutical Healthcare, the Pandemic, and Value-based Care John reflects on health regulations and restrictions and also the risk taking and flexibility that came into place under the COVID pandemic. He confirms how important it is to prepare for pandemics in terms of vaccine supplies, communication, and pre-deploying and integrating national and state employees in operations. He also notes the critical role of pharmacies in crisis situations. He tackles the issue of employee burnout and the current pharmacist shortage and the steps Walgreens is taking to solve the problem across states. On value-based care, he explains how it is the future, especially in the U.S. where healthcare is more expensive than any country in the world, how this is unacceptable, and how this should be approached to address health issues earlier to avoid hospitalization. The CareTalk Podcast John talks about the inspiration and intention of his podcast, what the content is and what has surprised him throughout the conversations. Guests that have been on his podcast include Andy Slavitt, Zeke Emanuel, Tony Cosgrove, and Amy Abernathy. When asked what he learned from his guests, John shares that he was surprised to find out that even though healthcare is very complicated and people are in silos, there is still room for novel and provocative opinions that can be explained. He also found out that everybody knows that drug costs are too high, but there are practical ways to bring them down without destroying the biotechnology industry that is creating new drugs to cure aging and extend lifespans. The podcast explores various issues surrounding health care and how to best address them. Toby Cosgrove from the Cleveland Clinic brought up the importance of creating heart-centered care in a large inner city hospital. It was noted that there are a lot of people working on solutions to healthcare problems, such as telehealth and AI to solve labor shortages. He also touches on the potential for AI and Chat GPT to be used in health care. While it is still early days, he mentions that there have been some companies experimenting with using these tools. Health Care and AI John talks about the impact of artificial intelligence on healthcare. He believes that AI has the potential to reduce administrative costs and waste in healthcare by simplifying billing and reconciliation processes. He also believes that AI can help in drug discovery, clinical pathways, and personalized care. He is looking forward to having guests on CareTalk with whom he can discuss the economy, healthcare costs, and the pandemic's effect on inflation. He wants to discuss the current chaotic economic landscape that is impacting healthcare, and the labor industry in particular. He mentions the growth of traveling nurses who are paid by private equity firms and how hospitals have had the worst six months financially in US history. He sources his information from HealthTech Nerds, the Washington Post, New York Times, LA Times, Wall Street Journal, Health Affairs, and Jim and Science, the MIT Tech Review, Science and Cell, all as good sources of information. He suggests Kaiser Family Foundation and Kaiser Health News as exceptional sources, as well as government sources such as CMS for basic data. This week the Chasing Life team is sharing one of their favorite podcasts, In the Bubble with Andy Slavitt. Soon after entering the Kansas City mayoral campaign, Democratic up-and-comer Jason Kander revealed that he suffered from PTSD and depression and walked away from politics and a future White House run. What do Monkeypox, COVID-19, and James Comey have in common? Each of them revealed weak spots in our institutions, including a tendency among people in positions of influence, power, and public information to filter what they know and what they should convey through the lenses of mass psychology and political analysis. Monkeypox isn't deadly or new, and yet the response too slow to contain the epidemic, and the communication around it from experts and professionals has been roundabout and convoluted. President Biden's former senior COVID adviser, and host of the podcast In The Bubble, Andy Slavitt joins to shed light on the Monkeypox outbreak, and on how political pressures brought to bear on leaders can warp decision making.
It's time for a conversation across the aisle. Jason and Ravi sit down with Mark Zinno, radio and TV talk show host and conservative political junkie. They talk Biden's student loan forgiveness plan, Anthony Fauci's legacy, and the $1.6 billion donation from a tax-dodging mogul to a conservative organization. There's some spirited discussion -- and perhaps some common ground? Plus, Top Gun references.Sign up through https://www.wren.co/majority54 to make a difference in the climate crisis, and Wren will plant 10 extra trees in your name!If you need the news, but also need to feel smarter and calmer, then you need to get in Andy Slavitt's bubble. The first major bipartisan gun bill in three decades is now law. Much of this is due to the work of Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT), who helped bring senators from both sides of the aisle together. Senator Murphy joins Andy to talk about what it took to get Republicans on board, what each senator brought to the table and why he hopes this bill will benefit his Republican colleagues. Andy asks about what it's like working with victim families over and over again, plus a look at how this bill can save lives and what's next for gun control legislation.
