It would be easy to put Dan Perkins into a category: Author; Commentator; Speaker; TV/Radio Personality; Veteran, but to do so would limit this multi-faceted person. In essence, Dan Perkins is all of these and more. Dan has been married to his wife Gerri for 50 years. They have four sons and four grandchildren. While managing a successful money management business for 45 years, serving as a veteran and starting a non-profit (Songs and Stories for Soldiers), Dan and Gerri decided to spend their winters in Florida. In 2012, while relaxing on Sanibel Island, FL, Dan decided to take a writing class at the Big Arts Center to help fill his vacation hours. He did not envision himself as a writer, and certainly not an author. The first night of class, the instructor told the class, “In two weeks you will know if you can be a writer.” He laughingly thought that if nothing else, he could go back to his golf game—it needed work! After the first class and one night at the keyboard, Dan came back with 1,000 words, a title, story line and even some of the main characters. He had already formalized the ending. And as they say, “the rest is history.” Five and a half years ago, Dan learned something important about himself. Writing was a gift and it came naturally to him. He has published three books in his first series, The Brotherhood of the Red Nile; recently completed his fourth novel, Ted Baker, In Terrorist Gold; completed three children's book, and is working on his next novel, Abraham Lincoln's Second Assassination. His mind continually envisions story lines and plots, twists and turns and ways to keep his stories alive and his readers coming back for more. He learned, he is indeed, a writer. From books to commentaries, Dan will be the first to say, that writing becomes part of who you are; it completes a person. He writes commentaries, opinion pieces, kid's books, newspaper articles on various topics and content for radio and TV programs. He writes. For many years, Dan's financial money management business provided a reason to keep himself entrenched in politics and current events: It made sense to know what was happening. At least 13 people have been killed and dozens injured in Barcelona after a van ploughed into pedestrians in a busy tourist street. More than two hours after the atrocity a man was shot dead after driving through a roadblock in a Ford Focus and opening fire, injuring two police officers. ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack, describing the killers as 'soldiers of the Islamic state'. Terror police are also reported to have arrested two suspects. One of them is believed to be Driss Oukabir, a Catalan resident in his late 20s of Moroccan origin. Oukabir, who has reportedly served time in a Spanish prison, had earlier rented one of the vans used in the deadly attack. The suspect is being treated 'as a terrorist', police in Barcelona have confirmed. A great fear came over me, I found myself asking, “Is this the beginning of the American Sunset?”, “is this the end of the great experiment started by our founding fathers?” Are there signs that the American Empire is over? After doing some research, I found 8 ways to tell if it is over, and for the most part, they come from Saul Alinsky. He told us his theory and I have found the scary facts that support the idea of the end of America. Many of you are probably asking who is Saul Alinsky and why is he so important? Saul David Alinsky died in June of 1972, and he was a community organizer and writer before Barack Obama. He is generally considered to be the founder of modern community organizing. His often quoted 1971 book “Rules for Radicals”, became the handbook for radicals including President Obama and Hillary Clinton. Alinsky received much criticism, but also gained praise from many public figures for his work. He focused on improving the living conditions of poor communities across North America. In the 1950’s, he began turning his attention to improving conditions in the African-American ghettos, beginning with Chicago and later traveling to other ghettos in California, Michigan, New York City, and a dozen other “trouble spots”. His ideas were adapted in the 1960’s by some U.S. college students including Bill and Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Hillary wrote a college thesis on Alinsky and his goals. In 1970, Time magazine wrote, “It is not too much to argue that American Democracy is being altered by Alinsky’s ideas.” So, what did he believe? Healthcare Alinsky believed that Hitler was the founder of universal healthcare; he believed his collective universal healthcare concept was “racial hygiene,” the elimination of certain “undesirable” segments of the society, as life not worth living. Under the appearance of reproductive freedom, black women are committing genocide on their own people. According to the Guttmacher Institute “abortion rates among Black women are much higher than we thought: They are four times the rate of white women.” The highest abortion rates among Black teens occur in Texas (78 per 1,000), New York (76 per 1,000), Delaware (51 per 1,000), Michigan (45 per 1,000), Ohio (35 per 1,000) and Rhode Island (30 per 1,000). While Black women account for 13 percent of the female population, they accounted for 30 percent of all abortions. In New York City, the number of Black abortions exceeds the number of Black live births. The above numbers are already so overwhelming that they may not be reversible. If Hillary becomes President the balance scale of survival may well tilt towards destruction of America. More spending with no significant increase in revenue from taxes paid on increasing profits and wages may well rapidly accelerate the ultimate collapse of America. Many Americans find it difficult to believe that we are on the brink of no longer being America. We will still be called America on the maps, but be assured we will no longer be America, at least the America I knew. As our financial resources diminish because we are taking care of more and more people from cradle to grave we become more vulnerable to foreign attacks both financially and physically. I believe the reason for the high percentage of worry about crime and the awful race relations in America is because the people who are bound by the chains of dependency on the government feel constrained and they want more. Generations of Americans, depending on the government to survive have breed contempt for the government and those Americans who have more than they do. They have reached the point of desperation to break the chains of oppression. Glenn Beck said recently, that America is a country of rugged individualism. The instructor, Nancy Daversa, started by telling the students they would know within the first two weeks if they could write. Dan smiled to himself thinking he would only miss a couple of rounds of golf. But the writing bug bit Dan Perkins and he found, not only can he write, but he can write fast and with a vengeance. His first story blossomed into a full length novel that he completed in 90 days. The Brotherhood of the Red Nile, A Terrorist Perspective, would go on to be the fourth book by one of Nancy Daversa's students in as many sessions of teaching. Dan's first book was published in December, 2012, barely a year after taking the course. One reviewer said, “This book is as current as today's headlines, but scarier than tomorrow's.” Filled with twists and turns, it offers a surprise at every intersection as readers will no doubt wonder “Where did that come from?”

Road to Healing – Lenten Journey 2014Day 36: Play Now: Twenty years ago today the Rwandan people woke up to the reality of Genocide. It lasted for 100 days and claimed a million lives. A few years back I had an opportunity to visit Rwanda. For me it was a chance to see what I had heard about only through stories. While I didn't know much about Rwanda, I had grown up with stories of the Armenian Genocide. My grandparents were survivors. My parents were first generation survivors and well, in many ways I am a survivor, having to reconcile with the reality that such a heinous crime could have occurred. Illness and disease reoccur. Sometimes they are passed along in genes. Sometimes they are passed along as viral infections – they are mimicked and copied from one person to the next. Illness needs to be addressed. Disease cannot be ignored.Suicide is killing the self. Homicide is killing another person. Genocide, as the name suggests, is killing off the entire gene-pool. Killing is killing, but how can we comprehend killing at this magnitude and in such proportions? During my stay in Rwanda I met with many survivors who shared their stories. It was surprisingly similar to the stories I had heard from my grandparents: Round-ups in the night, the men taken away, the women raped, the children left to die. In fact at one point the stories were too similar for comfort. One day we were driving on a bridge over the Nile River. Our guide pointed out that at one point during the course of the Genocide, there were so many dead bodies and blood flowing through the river that it was known as the “Red Nile.” Of course, I had heard the same stories, only in Armenia it was the “Red Euphrates” that they referenced.One of the most disturbing moments during my trip came at the Genocide Museum in Kigali. I was following the exhibits and stories of the Genocide that were mounted on the walls and in cases. In that museum I was immediately made color blind, because the only difference between the children and people in the photos and my own ancestry was the color of our skin. But it was unnoticeable. I was looking back in time at the events of the Armenian Genocide of 1915 here in the museum which documented the Genocide of 1994. I was moved to tears from these eye-witness accounts. I must have been a terrible mess because the sight of me crying brought one of the museum staff to my aid. She introduced herself to me. “Is everything OK? May I be of assistance?”I introduced myself and apologized for my outburst. I explained that the stories of the survivors, the children and the widows were stories that I had heard growing up. I explained to her that my grandparents were survivors of genocide. And then it happened. She asked me a question which has haunted me ever since that day. She asked, “Which Genocide?”Can you imagine? This is the 21st Century and we're still asking “Which Genocide?” You would think that a civilization that can explore space and develop vaccines for polio and smallpox, could certainly find a way of resolving conflicts without wars, let alone genocide. But here we were, in a museum, attesting to the fact that we are unable to cure the most dreaded of all diseases: hatred.Illness and disease reoccur. Sometimes they are passed along in genes. Today you are on the Road to Healing because you have identified the disease; you are traveling because you are not ignoring it. Once out of your system, you cannot allow it to come back to take over again. Today, you know that there is no other answer but to eradicate the illness forever.When we appeal to love as the answer, we have to understand that it is the ultimate weapon against our troubles, whether on a global level or on a personal level. You see, hatred breeds hatred. The ill cells in your body breed more cancers. Personalities and patterns of living infect others through our interactions and ultimately continue to live and wreak havoc another day. We are looking for a healing and understand that it must be complete. Let us pray, the prayer of Healing,Healer of infirmity, Physician of the physicians, Light and Love of the world, dispel the pain and heal the sickness of your people by beginning with me. Give me the strength to stand today noting my illness and receiving a complete healing. Fill me with your love and allow me to spread that love through my life and my deeds so that this disease will never go beyond me. It has been defeated. With true faith in the miracle, let it be!
