Today we've got something special—two deep dives into the world of magic and role-playing! We sit down with Douglas Rushkoff—media theorist, writer, and host of the Team Human podcast—to explore how RPGs, especially Mage: The Ascension, serve as tools for reality manipulation and self-discovery. We talk about the changing face of magic in society, its impact on public figures, and how Storytellers can weave magical sensibilities into their campaigns. Then, we chat with Richard Metzger, lifelong explorer of the occult and host of the Magic Show. He takes us on a journey through the cultural evolution of magic, its place in pop culture, and intriguing ideas like radionics that could bring a whole new layer to modern RPGs. It has been quite some time since What Magic is This? has had the chance to talk about one of the most important figures of High Strangeness in the last 100 years. Robert Anton Wilson was a phenomenon unlike any other, but he had a very particular mixture of influences all of which came through in his worldviews and his work. Discussing with Doug why Bob is still a fellow worth knowing and reading, is the one person who started Doug down this very particular path of Magic. We are beyond delighted to finally welcome to the Podcast the counterculture éminence grise- Richard Metzger!

I am thrilled to share this new episode with all all-around cool dude, Richard Metzger! Richard has been a fixture in the counter-culture and occult scene since the early 1990's, and has made lasting contributions with his Disinformation show, The Infinity Factory, Disinfo Con, and now his new offering, Magick Show. I'm a big fan of Richard's work, so please forgive my fanning out, haha. We get into all sorts of topics: his new show, how the counter-culture has changed and evolved, the occult, his older shows, and oh so much more. Richard Metzger is a television host, author, and the creative mind behind the provocative TV show Disinformation, which aired on Channel 4 in the UK. He was also my first boss out of college, when I worked for him as the books editor at the Disinformation Company; we later co-founded the website Dangerous Minds together with other friends. Richard was a formative mentor in my early career, and he and his co-founder Gary Baddeley were responsible for launching it by greenlighting my first book Generation Hex (at the tender age of 21!) in 2003. Richard's latest project Magick Show is a documentary designed by occultists for occultists, and is currently Kickstarting. The project aims to explore the world of modern occultism through in-depth conversations with over 50 leading figures in the field, including authors, scholars, and practicing magicians.  Richard and I hadn't talked in about a decade, but had a really great (and very, very high) time catching up and talking about magick, Richard's new project, and the state of the world. You're very much going to enjoy this long overdue conversation. Make sure to check out Magick Show on Kickstarter - only a few days remain! Links & Resources:

Austin Young is from Reno, Nevada and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. The foundation of his career is from studying at Parsons in Paris. Early in his career, Austin transferred his interests from traditional portrait painting towards a long celebrated career in portrait photography. In many ways, Austin is more accurately described as an image-maker: his projects illustrate the sublime qualities of character that make celebrated people unique. Based on a nuanced visual language of pop-culture iconography, his trademark style and techniques have captured a broad palette of musicians, artists and celebrities including Debbie Harry, Leigh Bowery and Margaret Cho, among others. In multiple bodies of work, Austin confuses personality and identity issues in confrontational and unapologetic image making about people who often split gender roles, stereotypical constraints and socially-constructed identities. Austin is co-founder and artist of Fallen Fruit, artist duo Austin Young and David Allen Burns, a contemporary art collective that uses fruit as a material for projects that investigate the hyper- qualities of collaboration. “Austin Young reconstructs tropes of pop art and pop culture into alarmingly brilliant new icons” - Shana Nys Drambot"Working with Austin Young is like being alone in a room with a spirit who wants to meet you. He is not interested in your mortality: he is interested in your immortality. [...] He reminds me of the great Hollywood portrait photographers from another era, of George Hurrell, in particular, who was interested in the painting, not the snapshot. There is always a place for the secular in journalism. Thankfully that place will not be in Mr. Young's studio." - Diamanda Galás"Austin Young is the best artist working in photography today. His work captures beauty at its most vital, carnal, visceral, alive! His exuberant intensity is matched by his innate sense of balance and upmost respect for glamour, in all of its many decent and indecent forms. His work will be seen as important historical reference for our times, and his name will be legend." - Margaret Cho"Austin's images are, like me, the best of both worlds. Flawless and perfect, they are dreamily artificial -- while somehow simultaneously remaining organic, genuine and very real." - Jackie Beat“I was beyond thrilled when Austin Young expressed interest in photographing Peaches Christ, not only because I knew Austin would create a gorgeously iconic Peaches image (which he did) but because it meant I'd be included in a brilliant body of work I've admired for years. Austin Young's subjects are my idols and his portraits pay glamorous tribute to the often over-looked world of dark divas, drag superstars, and underground film icons." - Peaches Christ“I'm pretty unabashed in my enthusiasm for Austin Young's work. I think he's the most original photographer to emerge in America since David LaChapelle.” -Richard Metzger

Counter culture icon and Editor of Dangerous Minds (www.dangerousminds.net), Richard Metzger, dove into the psychedelic deep end of the pool to discuss a record that STILL gets him high: Jefferson Airplane’s darker, heavier follow-up to Surrealistic Pillow, “After Bathing at Baxter’s”. Coffee was consumed, minds were expanded, and by the end the Summer of Love felt more like a hazy hangover. Support Rob and Barry, and That Record Got Me High at https://www.patreon.com/join/TRGMH

Metzger envisions what life might look like on the dole and what that means for the future of the counterculture.Rushkoff and Metzger consider whether the ideals of yesterday’s counterculture were so successful that they’ve become the new over culture? And if so, who are really the new revolutionaries? They also consider the effect Covid-19 will have on a new generation’s financial prospects, and whether the underlying flaws in capitalism will finally be laid bare.In his monologue, Rushkoff looks at the way our policing problems can only be solved if we fund and utilize other kinds of civil servants instead of just ones with weapons.Read “Good Cops Don’t Need Grenade Launchers” by Douglas Rushkoff from Medium’s GEN:https://gen.medium.com/good-cops-dont-need-grenade-launchers-c6110ddb453e:— Support Us —Team Human is made possible thanks to the generous support of our listeners on Patreon. On Patreon: http://patreon.com/teamhumanBecome a Contributing Subscriber: TeamHuman.fmReview the show on Apple Podcasts!— Follow Team Human Show —Twitter: http://twitter.com/teamhumanshowInstagram: http://instagram.com/teamhumanshowMedium: http://medium.com/teamhuman#TeamHumanShow #FindTheOthers— Follow Douglas Rushkoff —Twitter: http://twitter.com/rushkoffMedium: https://medium.com/@rushkoffInstagram: http://instagram.com/douglasrushkoffFacebook: https://facebook.com/rushkoff/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rushkoff/— Credits —Hosted by Douglas RushkoffProduced by Josh ChapdelaineAudio Edited & Mixed by Luke Robert MasonOur community manager is Michael Bass.Music by Fugazi (On this Episode you heard “Foreman’s Dog” in the intro – thanks to the kindness of the band and Dischord Records.)Special thanks to Stephen Bartolomei.Team Human is a Production of the Laboratory for Digital Humanism at Queens College. BACK IN THE SADDLE! We finally return to the world of audio podcasting after a few weeks of video capture and training (coming June 2009). This week we dream of android-sheep, with cultural critic and social theorist Erik Davis. In this (the first of many we hope) interview, we decided to focus on Erik's study of visionary-author Phillip K. Dick, as well as a brief look at Davis' own 'Techgnosis' studies. In this episode, we discuss Phillip K. Dick's bizarre life, the 'pink laser' experience, the Valis-trilogy, Dick's exegesis, Technosis and much more. While our first-officer, Claire Lumiere, remains aurally-absent again this week; our sub-mariner, Daddytank, and his navy of musical vessels, defend our shores of the alternative once again with his excellent 'Myspace Heroes'. His essays have appeared in over half a dozen books, including Zig Zag Zen: Buddhism and Psychedelics (Chronicle), The Disinformation Book of Lies (Disinfo), Prefiguring Cyberculture (MIT Press) and Paul "DJ Spooky" Miller's Sound Unbound (MIT). He has contributed articles and essays to a wide variety of publications, including Bookforum, The Wire, ArtByte, the LA Weekly, Gnosis, and the Village Voice. His articles have been translated for publication in countries ranging from Japan to Brazil to Hungary.Davis has taught at the California Institute of Integral Studies, the New York Open Center, and Esalen, and was one of the organizers of Planetwork, a conference on information technology and global ecology held in San Francisco in 2000. He has been interviewed by CNN, has popped up on radio shows internationally, and appeared prominently in Craig Baldwin's underground film, the SciFi media critique Specters of the Spectrum. His in-depth studies of the science fiction author Philip K. Dick have been acknowledged by the New Yorker. Davis has also lectured internationally on topics relating to media arts, contemporary electronic music, and spirituality in the postmodern world.Davis is a fifth-generation Californian, and is currently working with the photographer Michael Rauner on California Visions, a photo-essay travelogue through the Golden State's landscape of alternative spirituality. Four years ago, Richard Metzger went from designing the logic that goes into cell phones, computers and electronics to designing trading algorithms for his own venture AlgorithmicTrading.net. The results in just a short time have been impressive.  In Episode 9 of Top Trader Radio, Richard and host Charley Wright cover a broad range of topics from why to avoid perfection to how to use inversely correlated instruments to hedge. Richard has algorithms for a variety of market conditions but within each strategy he advocates for simplicity when possible.  Richard offers one of his marquee strategies under the name Swing Trader ES TY on a privately branded Collective2 site.  "Always remember, don't let the perfect become the enemy of the sufficient ... because back-testing is only a small part of the battle. I've coded over 300 algorithms, almost all of which did poorly when applied to live trades. A few stood out as gems and those are what we offer to our customers today." Richard Metzger Founder, Lead Developer, Quant Algorithms LLC Richard spent over 10 years as a logic designer engineer at Fortune 500 companies including Hewlett-Packard, Intel, and Qualcomm. In 2013, after trading on the side during his entire career, he founded AlgorithmicTrading.net (now under parent company Quant Algorithms) to capitalize on his expertise in algorithm development, finite state machine coding/design and advanced mathematics. Richard has a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with a computer science emphasis from Boise State.
