So the Halloween Boutique Psychotronic Reviews podcast decided to do an episode on the 2009 movie WATCHMEN but our discussion went a bit long as we discussed the background to the movie, and its source material. So we decided to break it into two episodes. The second is all about the movie itself.Directed by Zack Snyder, written by David Hayter and Alex Tse, and starring Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Good, Jackie Earle Haley, Patrick Wilson, Carla Gugino, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, was not the success that the studio had hoped. With the usual debate between the fans of the graphic novel and superheroes in general, backlash and praise were both the norm. Now fifteen years later, the movie has become somewhat of a cult classic. With its fabulous special effects, splendid acting, and changes to the story to make it fit within a movie length, the film, though polarizing, continues to find audiences through streaming. Your cohosts take a look at the film itself and give their thoughts.

This week on the Everything Actioncast, Zach and Chris revisit the 2014 remake of Robocop, which just celebrated its 10th anniversary.Starring Joel Kinnaman as Alex Murphy, 2014's Robocop sees the Detroit cop almost killed by a car bomb after he gets too close to taking down the local crime boss, Vallon (Patrick Garrow). Luckily (or maybe unlucky) for Alex, he's selected to be the first cyborg police officer for Omnicorp. They have robotic drones in war zones around the globe but are legally prohibited from deploying them on US soil. Omnicorp CEO Raymond Sellars (Michael Keaton) believes Robocop can help turn the tide of public opinion and help him deploy robots in every major US city.Zach and Chris talk about some of the things this new version does well, including the horrific view of what's left of Murphy's body, the action sequences, and the complicated arc of Gary Oldman's Dr. Norton along with some of the things that pale in comparison to the original, like its self-serious tone and lack of hilarious satire, the PG-13 rating and the uncharismatic. You can watch Robocop on Max if you want to get refreshed on the remake.Next week we're talking about Darkman, which is coming to 4K for the first time on Tuesday, 2/20.We want to hear your comments and feedback. Mentored early in their career by legendary horror director Tobe Hooper, the duo has also worked with Clive Barker and Dario Argento. Sixteen of their scripts have been made into feature films. Recent projects include the Saturn Award-winning “Tales of Halloween,” for which Gierasch directed and Anderson produced a segment. Gierasch has directed many of the duo's scripts, and recently directed the film “Spaghetti.”Anderson graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University, where her senior thesis, “Re- Writing Race: Subverting Language in Anne Moody's Coming of Age in Mississippi and Alice Walker's Meridian” was published in the academic journal a/b: autobiography studies. Matt's Movie Lodgecast

Earlier this year, a film was released called Hypnotic, directed by Robert Rodriguez and starring Ben Affleck. It was a major box office bomb with bad reviews and was only in theaters for a blink of an eye. But we caught a screening of it and, like hypnotized victims, we scarcely remember what we saw. Join us in examining our recollection of Rodriguez's head-scratching thriller. The movie also stars William Fichtner, Alice Braga, J.D. We're getting back to our regular programming with a special request from one of our listeners! Following our episode on The Road, listener Jeff shared his  recommendation for another post-apocalyptic movie. According to Jeff, “It's an old one, but it still checks out.” Released in 1977, the same year as Star Wars, and two years before Mad Max, this “road movie” see a small group of survivors of World War 3 attempt to drive across the desolate wasteland to where they hope more survivors are living, facing freakish mutated insects and other dangers along the way. Starring Jan-Michael Vincent, George Peppard, Paul Winfield, and very young Jackie Earle Haley, based on the novel by Roger Zelazny, and directed by George Smight, the movie was, to put it kindly, a flop, despite being released in the new “Sound 360” surround format. But it has earned a cult following in the years since, with Jeff among its devotees, thanks in part to the true star of the film: the wasteland-crawling armored RV called The Landmaster, designed by Dean Jeffries. As Jeff writes, “One of my favorite movies growing up - for the vehicle alone - was Damnation Alley. I'd love to hear Legends take on it.” And take it on we shall! This week, Matt Goldberg (formerly of Turner Classic Movies, currently of the Substack Commentary Track) joins us for the mighty return of... gasp.... John Travolta in a good role? First, we cover Jackie Earle Haley's directorial debut, Criminal Activities, a messy but ultimately interesting Tarantino riff in which a group of down-and-out high school buddies (Michael Pitt, Christopher Abbott, Rob Brown, Dan Stevens) ends up inadvertently in debt to a cheeky, Macbeth-quoting mob boss (Travolta, having a grand old time). They can get out from under his thumb, if they do one big job for him -- kidnap the failson (Edi Gathegi) of his mob rival. Twists, turns, and darkly comic antics ensue, as a deeply-overqualified cast leans into the film's innate goofiness.  On the other side of the coin comes Oliver Stone's poorly-aged, deadly serious, self-righteous political biopic Snowden, charting the life of Edward Snowden (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, doing his best Elizabeth Holmes impression) as he goes from dull intelligence agent to dull whistleblower. Cage shows up for a few minutes as Snowden's jaded mentor, but otherwise it's two-plus hours of Stone's overwrought self-insistence that what you're watching is The Most Groundbreaking, Earth-Shattering Discovery About Government Surveillance Ever.
