Live music events don't get much bigger than Fist Full Of Rock, which hits Eatons Hill Hotel this Friday, April 29, and the Enmore Theatre in Sydney on September 2.Featuring The Poor, The Angels, Baby Animals and Rose Tattoo, Fist Full Of Rock is more than a concert event. It is Australian music history unfolding before your ears performed by four of the best in the business.Between all four bands they have witnessed, and been directly involved in, some of the highest points of rock music in this country and come together for a limited run of two shows that promises to excite the inner rock child in all of us.On the eve of the Eatons Hill show, The Angels front man Dave Gleeson took a last minute call with HEAVY to talk about the show and the past, present and future of four of Australia's finest ever rock outfits. We start by posing the question of how all four bands keep delivering the goods year after year."I think its just the fact that you enjoy playing with the people you're making the music with," he replied, "the crowd reaction, and it's definitely become a much less stressful environment than it was. When you're coming up through the ranks and you're playing six or more nights a week - all that stuff that happens in the beginning - you're checking artwork and you're recording and all that kind of stuff so it does become quite stressful but we're at a stage now where it's all cream. It's all just great fun to do, hanging out back stage with the other bands and to get out and rock out for your set and make the crowd go off... it's all just good fun."Gleeson has played with and alongside each of the bands for decades, so we ask him for his first memories of each band, starting with Rose Tattoo."I never got to see Rose Tattoo in their heyday," he recalled, "but the first time I ever saw Angry live was when The Screaming Jets supported when he brought out his Blood From Stone album, and we did our spot and went out and watched the band and after the show we couldn't wait to get in and meet them. We waited ten or fifteen minutes and I knocked on the door and I hear Rob Riley say "come in digger", because he was playing in the band as well. I opened the door and there was five nude men sitting there - and all big men as well! All very big and very nude and hairy. Rob Riley gets up and gives me a cuddle and Angry stands up in the nude and shakes my hand. When I tell people the story they are like yeah Rose tattoo, when you go backstage, everyone's just in the nude after the show. It's like a game of footy and everyone's just in the showers having a beer together."In the full interview Dave talks us through the first time he saw The Poor, Baby Animals and The Angels, getting back into the swing of playing again after the COVID layoff, the contribution of each of the four bands to the Australian music scene, why you should go to Fist Full Of Rock, what The Angels have planned for the rest of 2022 and more.

Things discussed: What's going on with Harbaugh? Talk exceeds the substance—tepid interest from Harbaugh, tepid interest from the NFL. Vikings might do something goofy but barring that he's back. Will we get an announcement? Yeah, there will be a contract. What went down with Macdonald? He seemed like an NFL guy, don't understand why they dropped Wink, but Wink was a successor to Pees, and maybe John thought Macdonald was the real engine. Everyone agrees he's a genius. Clink is going to be the co-DC. Not going to find a guy with the same system; just need find someone who can fit the same personnel. Mac brought us a strategy that could beat Ohio State. Gotta have that. You can play man the rest of the year. Also need a LBs coach. Michigan going to ask Larry Foote? Hoops: We let Craig Ross go off. Rob Riley is an abomination, shouldn't be reffing in the Big Ten. This is the crew that ran off Beilein. Game is different if HD doesn't get that 3rd foul. Moving screens were on Jones. Moussa got a terrible charge call where the guy was sliding under him. Shout out to Faulds. Support playing him over Johns given how badly Johns was playing (the shoe!) IU game: Woodson got outcoached by Howard, TJD looked tired. MSU has been getting RIDICULOUS officiating the last three games. End of Northwestern game they were actively trying to give MSU chances, Illinois had a huge lead until the officials brought State back, and Wisconsin got doubled up in fouls at home. Doesn't bode well for Breslin. MSU could not stop Frazier—they have a blow-by problem at guard again. They also can't decide who to play at center, even if it's obviously Bingham. Caleb Houstan's renaissance: The more space you create the better he's going to be, because he's a lethal Just a Shooter™ but isn't great at contested shots and doesn't get it off quickly.

Rural Matters

In Part III of this three-part series on Reimagining Rural Policy, produced in collaboration with and underwritten by the Brookings Institution, Michelle talks with Cheryal Hills, Executive Director of Region Five Development Commission, who has developed dozens of relationships that have secured investments to address critical issues in the rural communities of Central Minnesota and Rob Riley, president of the Northern Forest Center, who has guided the Center to become the respected regional innovation and investment partner it is today. Capacity building involve planning, learning, and adjustment and is a mix of practical application and theory, according to Hills. She describes a fascinating example of how Region Five drove a value-added regional food hub with Sprout, including serving as its fiscal host, co-authoring grants, providing business training and one-on-one technical assistance to food co-ops, co-sponsoring health and wellness mental health workshops to decrease suicide rates, helping to develop microloans, constructing a 10,000 square foot process facility, starting a mobile market, launching a winter indoor farmer’s market with food and art, and providing community supported agriculture shares (CSAs) to low-income veterans  and those in opioid recovery programs. Capacity building is the ability to be nimble in getting  things done, says Riley, and one of the challenges is identifying resources for stakeholders and enabling local communities and residents to build their own capacity in the forest economy in four Northern Forest states of New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Regional collaboration is key in this area, explains Riley, and that involves connecting people who are otherwise working in isolation to expand broadband capabilities and broader markets, for example, that enables local projects to be scaled.  Hills discusses how EDA could channel funds to distressed rural areas, which could include not just employment and poverty rates but population decline and health outcome data, and develop creative programs for nonprofits and Native American tribes that  reduce match barriers. EDA can support local programs that better position rural areas to access the 25 percent set-aside to build on recreational and tourism opportunities, says Riley. The guests end the episode emphasizing the capabilities of the proposed Rural Partnership Program to be complementary with existing programs and what the future “could be” as opposed to “will be.” This episode and the entire three-part series are sponsored by the Brookings Institution, www.brookings.edu.

How and why do you put science on stage? This week's podcast features two of the artists involved with the production of Peter Parnell's QED, currently being produced by theatre4humanity and Collaboraction. Rob Riley plays physicist Richard Feynman in the show; Matthew Grayson designed the sound and graphics. Matt is also a professor of engineering at Northwestern University where he produced an earlier incarnation of this production as part of an annual series of plays about science. Rob and Matt join Anne Nicholson Weber to talk about Feynman, left- and right-brain creativity, and the creative combustion that results when artists and scientists collaborate.
