Its an absolute honour to welcome to the podcast founding member of arguably the biggest Australian rock band in the early 90's, and one of my all time favourite bands, Guitarist Dave Leslie. (The first album I ever bought was Baby Animals). Dave was born in Sydney Australia, he learnt guitar at the early age before playing in some local bands. He formed the Cold Chisel tribute band Swing Shift and gained a large following. After trying out for Rose Tattoo, he was later asked to try out for a new band with Suzi DeMarchi on vocals. Soon after they formed Baby Animals and brought out their debut self titled album. The album went x4 Platinum and went Number 1 in the ARIA Charts. The band won 3 ARIA Awards- Best Debut Single "Early Warning" , Best Debut Album, Best Break Through Band. The band toured the world with Bryan Adams, Van Halen and Robert Plant. Baby Animals broke up in 1996 and Dave then played guitar for Australian Rock Icons- Jimmy Barnes and Richard Clapton. The band reformed in 2007 to the high anticipated reunion tour. Baby Animals continue to perform live and record new albums. Dave's also plays in Truck. @daveleslie64 @babyanimalsmusic www.daveleslie.com.au https://tellcraigyourstory.podbean.com https://www.linktr.ee/tellcraigyourstory @tellcraigyourstory Youtube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcCr6P3Ja395SkapnECvOFw?view_as=subscriber #daveleslie #tellcraigyourstory #babyanimals #swignshift #truck #rawbrit #guitarist #suzidemarchi #vanhalen #edwardvanhalen #bryanadams #robertplant #jimmybarnes #coldchisel #richardclapton #grinspoon #rosetattoo #screamingjets #theangels #extreme #inxs #davidletterman #shavedanddangerous #ariaawardwinners #mikechapman #nunobettencort #thisisnottheend #mtv #morecowbell

A Breath of Fresh Air loves the music and the musicians of the 60's 70's and 80's. And, if you're a fan of 80's music, you're likely a huge fan of English new wave band, SPANDAU BALLET. The group was inspired by London's post-punk underground dance scene and became one of the most successful groups of the New Romantic era. We meet lead singer TONY HADLEY who tells us all about his time with the band, why he left it and we check in with some of his latest music that he's taking on tour. My next guest has been dubbed “The First Lady of Roots Music” for albums that touch on her wide-ranging influences. On her latest excursion, MARIA MULDAUR teamed up with an unknown New Orleans street-band. The singer has had a long and storied career but is known around the world for that one particular song about a camel. You know the one I'm talking about, don't you? We check in with Maria to hear all about how 'Midnight at the Oasis' came to be. You could be pretty surprised to learn the real story! This week's listener's choice finds us chatting with one of Australia's consummate hippies and most beloved musicians, RICHARD CLAPTON. The uber cool Richard joins us to walk us through his long career and regales us with stories of his past and present and his hopes for the future. If you don't know Richard Clapton's music, this interview will shine a lot of light on the man and the songs he's popularised over many years. Do you have an artist you'd like to hear from? Just send me a message sandy@abreathoffreshair.com.au and I'll do my best to get your favourite 60's, 70's or 80's artist onto the show to chat with them. You might even like to leave me a review/rating on the platform you're listening to it on. I'd be sooooo grateful! Till next week then, Warm regards Sandy

Richard Clapton began his recording career in 1974. Australia was still in the vice-like grip of the cultural cringe. He plunged into the “deep water” and legends like Skyhooks and Paul Kelly, Cold Chisel, INXS, Midnight Oil, and hundreds of others, followed in his wake. Clapton's songs are still omnipresent on the radio to this day, his records charting the political landscape of the nation and the turbulent lives of two generations. Clapton grew up in Sydney in the 1960s before hopping a plane for London, and then later to Germany, where he wrote a first album, Prussian Blue (1973) which was one of the first major Australian “singer-songwriter” albums. Fast track to 1975, Clapton had the critics on side but his label at the time, Festival Records, insisted on a hit single. However, it was the song they picked as a B-side called “Girls On the Avenue” that reached #1 on the national charts and put Clapton at the top of his class. Like Americans Jackson Browne and Bruce Springsteen, Richard Clapton developed a sound based on melodic rock while his lyrics were poetic musings on his state of mind or the state of the nation. In 1980 he released the searing Dark Spaces, an indictment on the meanness and mendacity that would blow through the 1980s. Ten years after his first release, Richard Clapton was a tribal elder to whom younger artists like Jimmy Barnes, INXS and Cold Chisel turned as a mentor. INXS asked Clapton to produce their second album, Underneath the Colours, and they became firm friends. They, and Cold Chisel, returned the favour on Clapton's The Great Escape album with INXS drummer Jon Farriss going on to produce The Glory Road album. Few records of that time captured the roller coaster ride of the late 1980s as well as Glory Road. These albums brought Clapton's melodic gifts and his love of electric rock & roll into lockstep. In the 1990s Richard continued to write and record and tour and his 1990s songs reflect a hard-won maturity. Indeed, Richard counts 2003's Diamond Mine as amongst his best albums – and the critics unanimously agreed. In 1999 Richard Clapton was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. In 2014, his first memoir “The Best Years of Our Lives” was published by Allen and Unwin. The book connected with people of all generations because it was not only a story of Clapton's journey, but it also documented the story of the lives of thousands of fans who had travelled the same road. Young people – fascinated by how it was “back in the day” also became a new generation of fans. The book continues to flourish through “word of mouth”, resonating with so many people in so many ways Richard Clapton has never been rich. He has never had the pleasure of passing through life in a luxurious rock star bubble. In a career that now spans over 40 years he has battled everything from bad managers and capricious record companies to debt, taxes, personal tragedy and a thousand room service dinners. The fact that he's come through it all with his sanity intact surprises all who know and love him.
We packed up the podcast gear and headed north to The Whitsundays to absorb some sun; smash cocktails and listen to rock royalty as Richard Clapton, Daryl Braithwaite, Diesel and The Black Sorrows belted out heaps of Aussie Classics...plus we found some weird stuff to chat about, which is really what the podcast is about anyway!
With a career dating back to the 60s Richard Clapton has given Australia some of its greatest hits. While he’s thankful for a vocation which has kept him young at heart, he’s disappointed in the generation that made him a star. Folk in their 70s he says, need to reawaken their inner rebel and start fighting again for things that are important.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Australia's preeminent singer-songwriter continues to share fascinating tales of his days with INXS that include a life-changing night when he slept in the bed normally occupied by Michael and Kylie, the re-recording of INXS' The Loved One in Paris, and his long-standing relationship with Chris Murphy. Forever erudite and giving, Richard continues to talk with grace, humor, and fondness for the halcyon days before devices and ‘gotcha' culture moments pervade everything an artist does these days. Episode 90: Richard Clapton: INXS on the Avenue, Part 1 The 1970s were a seminal time worldwide for singer-songwriters with the names James Taylor, Billy Joel, Carol King, and Neil Sedaka permeating the cultural landscape. In Australia, Richard Clapton spearheaded the “down under” contribution to the field of songwriting success. However, it was 1981 when a chance meeting with six young musical upstarts from the Northern Beaches paved the way for an enduring and successful musical kinship and friendship. The Loved One cover and Underneath the Colours album were pivotal in establishing INXS as an emerging act and one that fans and critics would jump on board with as this new decade took shape. So, in the first of two episodes, Bee and I are blessed to talk to Richard and dive deep into a time, place, and period where “the song, the craft, and the culture” were all about the artistic craft. The Concert for LIFE!!!! (not strife) March 28th, 1992 was a pivotal day in the career of INXS. With the tragic 1991 murder of groundbreaking doctor Victor Chang, the former Head of St Vincents Hospital in Sydney, the band spearheaded the Centennial Park gig with all profits going to the newly set up charity. With a huge local support artist list including Jenny Morris, Richard Clapton, Baby Animals, and Crowded House, over 70,000+ fans turned up to cheer away in what was uniquely a nonalcoholic gig and fairly priced at $21/head. Opening up with the never heard before “Heaven Sent”, the band unearthed 4 new tracks from the forthcoming Welcome to Wherever you Are album. Michael preening across the stage in his magnificent white “Elvis Esque” jumpsuit, he had all of the fans in the palm of his hand. Unfortunately, the concert is more remembered for backstage fighting amongst the “suits” with infamous stories leaked to a bloodthirsty press looking for titillation versus altruism. The subsequent media backlash directed towards the band was felt for many years to follow and unfortunately sullied or drowned out all of the artistic merits of subsequent INXS releases. Today the true facts are told as we remove the specter of gossip and gloss loss and celebrate the purity of what was “The Concert for LIFE”! My Guest today is Shauna Jensen. Shauna is a vocalist with an outstanding pedigree. She has an illustrious career and has worked in, not only Australia's live music scene but also the recording industry as well. Shauna started her career singing in 1970 with a band ‘Purple Vision' who's biggest highlight for Shauna was supporting Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs. In the early 70's Shauna tried her hand at musical theater, being in the original cast of Jesus Christ Superstar. This led Shauna to studio work. In her role as a studio session singer her voice has been heard on many TV and radio commercials as well as soundtracks for films and TV series. From this began a successful career singing backing vocals and touring for a couple of decades with Australia's leading Rock Industry professionals, including Jimmy Barnes, Noiseworks, Cold Chisel, Richard Clapton and Doug Parkinson. She even recorded an album (unreleased) of duets with Hugh Jackman and produced by the late legendary Phil Ramone. She has appeared on TV as a judge on Network 7's Popstars Live, as a regular panelist on Foxtel's Beauty and The Beast, Featured singer on Foxtel's Studio A, as well as every incarnation of the Midday Show on Nine Network as a soloist. Shauna recently appeared as one of the 100 judges in Network 7's All Together Now. In the last decade Shauna has had many sell out cabaret shows in Sydney and is in high demand. 2020 marked Shauna's 50th year as a professional musician. An incredible singer. I recently caught up with Mark after one of his gigs, we chatted about his first Engine Room interview (please listen to E7 first) and he stated that there was a lot that he did not touch on in that interview. I was delighted when Mark suggested that we arrange a time to record part 2. In this interview Mark reflects on the incredibly talent people that he has had the opportunity to get to know and work with throughout his career as a session musician in more detail. Mark chats about joining Stylus and the band being signed to Motown, working with Daddy Cool's guitarist Ross Hannaford, performing in Melbourne with Ross’s band Lucky Dog, and how that led to his fondest recording memory with Mark Gillespie on his “Only Human” and “Sweet Nothing” albums. He retouched on his time touring with Marcia Hines and recording and touring with Richard Clapton and Moving Pictures, and how one of his Sydney band Chasin’ The Train gigs ended up leading to Mark touring with the Divinyls in 1992. Other artists that Mark has recorded and or toured with mentioned in this interview are Jenny Morris, Wendy Mathews, Jon English, Lee Kernaghan, Elvis The Musical, The New Rocky Horror Show with Craig McLaughlin. Mark also talks about his interesting experience during the 9 weeks that he toured Australia with the Divinyls in 1992 and why he decided not to continue with that tour when they went to the USA. When Mark finished touring with the Divinyls he received a call from Garth Porter who asked him if he would be interested in recording on the young country artist Lee Kernaghan's debut album. Mark agreed to do the album “The Outback Club” and was given ½ a percent as part of the payment. The ARIA award winning debut album was a huge success reaching 2 x Platinum which meant that his ½ a percent earned Mark $20K! Mark continued to record and tour for a few years with Lee, and after the success of the first album, Mark became extremely popular within the Country Music scene recording somewhere in the vicinity of 250 albums with various country artists including Gina Jeffreys, Troy Cassar-Daley and James Blundell. Mark chose the following tracks for his interview, "Spellbound" Richard Clapton's "Best Years" album, & "Only Human" Mark Gillespie Links: mark gillespie only human full album Mark Gillespie “Sweet Nothing” album Lee Kernaghan - The 25th Anniversary Album Bang The Drum - Only You (1990) Mark Meyer Facebook Band It About Facebook Email: banditabout17@gmail.com Band It About website https://www.podpage.com/band-it-about-podcast-series/ iPhone please rate & comment via: https://ratethispodcast.com/banditabout Thanks for listening! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/dianne-spillane/message

South Australian Music Hall of Famer 'Mark Meyer' joins me this week to chat about his amazing career. Mark is one of Australia's most recorded and toured drummers, who started his career gigging in Adelaide whilst in high school, eventually making the move to Melbourne where he joined 'Stylus' (who were the only Australian act to be released by Motown Records in the USA.) Mark's career really took off after 'Stylus' disbanded in 1979 when he was invited to join the Queen of Pop 'Marcia Hines' Band, the first gig with Marcia being the '2SM Concert of the Decade' which was the biggest outdoor music spectacle, boasting a Who's Who of Australian musical talent, held on the steps of the Sydney Opera House on November 4th, 1979. Mark has recorded in the vicinity of 400 albums both as a session drummer and as a band member of: Stylus, Marcia Hines, Richard Clapton, Moving Pictures, Jenny Morris, Divinyls, Mark Gillespie, Wendy Mathews, Dave Dobbyn, Keith Urban and Trisha Yearwood just to name a few. He chats about recording at 'Sound City', Van Nuys and 'The Record Plant' LA for the original Footloose Movie Soundtrack, and about how the band did not receive any royalties whatsoever for the track "Never" due to the bankruptcy of their U.S. record company. Music: Intro 'Jenny Morris' "You I Know" written by 'Neil Finn". During the interview: 'Marcia Hines' "You", 'Dragon' "Celebration" written by 'Kool & the Gang', 'Moving Pictures' "Never" (Footloose soundtrack), 'The Party Boys' "I Fought The Law" written by 'Sonny Curtis', 'Chasin The Train' "Fever" written by 'Eddie Cooley' and 'Otis Blackwell', 'The Fallen Saints' "The Maker", and Outro 'Richard Clapton' "The Best Years of Our Lives." Like the Leyland Brothers before them, our bush and beach boffins Hugh Liney and Rod Crundwell ‘travel all over the countryside' collecting the best songs about the Australian urge to get away from it all. Greg Quill wanders like a Gypsy Queen, Richard Clapton and The Pigram Brothers dream of Byron Bay and James Reyne sings another song where we can't understand a ‘country' word he said. The Triffids make sure we know what they mean by repeating the phrase Wide Open Road two hundred times.

She was an original cast member of Jesus Christ Superstar, appearing on the Original Australian Cast Recording. Turns in Two Gentlemen of Verona and Betty Blokkbuster followed,Shauna's debut CD, Something Real, was released in 1997. These include singing background vocals for Carry the Flame by Jon Stevens, the official song for the Sydney 2001 Olympics torch relay. My guest today is percussionist, Tony Azzopardi. Tony grew up in Sydney, the youngest of 15 children with his mother and father coming from Malta. Music was always in the family with Tony's first band being the family band called Africa, with his brother Marz, the drummer of the band, being particularly influential to Tony's early development as a musician, and as a percussionist. These were the early to mid 70s. Tony has been a professional musician ever since, having played with live or recorded with the a lot of the best including Doug Parkinson, Marcia Hines, Roger Frampton, Jenny Morris, Mark Hunter , Andrew Oh, Richard Clapton, Gina Jeffries, Jeff Duff, Tina Arena, Ian Moss, Barry Leef and many others. Tony was also the house band percussionist for Australian Idol. In an effort to pull back a bit from constant touring and gigging, Tony and his friend created DRUMBEAT, an interactive drums and percussion show that would tour Australian schools. In 2011, Tony got very ill with cancer. Yet during treatment, he stilled went out and gigged. After beating that cancer, it was time for a change so he packed up and moved out of Sydney. He now spends his days on his farm in the hunter region of NSW, and he still plays everyday. So without further ardue, Ladies and gentleman, please give it up for Tony Azzopardi. Dave Nicholas is an Australian multiple award winning recording engineer, mixer and producer who has a plethora of number 1 selling records to his name. He has worked with such prestigious acts as Bryan Adams, Sting, Rod Stewart, Elton John, Pulp, Soul Asylum, The Sex Pistols, INXS, Midnight Oil, Delta Goodrem, Jimmy Barnes, Richard Clapton, Diesel, George, and Vince Jones to name but a few. In this interview Dave gives the music business facts and harsh realities about producing records for a living in the current music industry climate. We also discuss a range of other music business topics such as music publishing, mechanical royalties, artist royalties, 360 degree deals, and the need for diversification. Enjoy!
It was 1982 - the Australian popular music landscape had a number of iconic albums released: Men at Work's "Business As Usual", Midnight Oil's "10, 9, 8...", Goanna's "Spirit of Place", Cold Chisel's "Circus Animals" and Richard Clapton's "The Great Escape". Richard was already revered as one of Australia's greatest songwriters recording music that was identifiably Australian combining a bit of surf music, hippie ideals and lyrics that would not have been out of place on early Bruce Springsteen records. In 1982, he wanted to try something a little different. Looking at what his peers were doing, he developed a tougher sound for The Great Escape utilising the skills of the great Mark Opitz (Cold Chisel, Angels) as producer. For episode 40 of Love That Album, Michael Pursche of Sitting In a Bar In Adelaide podcast and I discuss this album, some of what went on before that, and a discussion Richard made on a certain teen TV pop music show with its "professional" host. The album starts off frantic and ends off with Richard at peace with his environment. In between, there's a song that is (in my opinion) one of the greatest, if not THE greatest pop song written in this country. The musicians on board include a who's who of the day, including members of INXS who Richard had previously produced. Eric Reanimator returns to discuss the music of cowpunk outfit, The Divine Horsemen in his segment An Album I Love.
