As part of the critically acclaimed double act, Norris & Parker, Katie gathered a cult-like following and has been featured in top comedy picks from The Guardian, Evening Standard and The Independent. Now Katie has dipped her toe in the stand-up comedy waters for the first time and she will be doing the full festival run with her debut show, ‘Farm Fatale'. Directed by Elf Lyons and original music composed by Chris Thomsonand Huge Davies.Straight from farm to stage, agricultural icon Katie explores the most challenging period of her life – when her cat Atticus went missing only to be found, unofficially adopted and well looked after by a woman who worked in marketing. Katie will also explore the classic stereotypes that are forced on women, the challenges of dating as a mid-thirties woman (and comedian) in London and ageing in comparison to her Gen Z flatmate, expertly weaving in a sax solo and some show-stopping songs along the way.As well as enjoying sold out Fringe runs and receiving critical acclaim as part of Norris & Parker, Katie was also a semi-finalist in the BBC New Comedy Awards 2023 and won the Musical Comedy Awards 2023. This is Heyer Today, the podcast taking you on a journey exploring the work of Georgette Heyer, underappreciated author of hilarious and charming Regency romances and detective novels. As with all of our book club episodes, this week we're going to be trying to convert two people who've NEVER read Heyer. Today we have Emma Moran, winner of the 2019 Thousand Films award. Emma's a Northern Irish writer and comedian, based in London. She began writing and performing sketch comedy and stand up while at UCL and took a sketch show, Galpals, to the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe. Most excitingly, she's recently had her first TV show, Extraordinary, greenlit for Disney+. She's also written and produced comedy sketches for The Hook, as well as Newsjack. We got together in that hallowed time in the distant past before the 'rona virus turned us all into bitter recluses. Margaret Sutherland is a Project Coordinator for Transcribimus living in Vancouver, Canada. She kindly read Black Sheep with me, encouraged by her niece by marriage, Geraldine – one of my very first victims (see episode 6, Faro's Daughter). We'll also be travelling back in time to 1966 to take a look at what Heyer was up to when writing the book. Plus, Georgette and Ronald visit the Queen! Show notes: Brenda S. Cox - Hypochondriacs in Jane Austen and Regency Medicine  Our fabulous voice talent includes Sarah Golding as Georgette, Karim Kronfli as Ronald, Beth Crane as the Queen and Hedley Knight as the Chauffeur and the Duke of Edinburgh. The music used in this episode is from Emma Gattril's wondrous album, Chapter I, as well as Jerome Alexander's luscious Message to Bears work. Original music was composed especially for the podcast, by Sara-Mae and Tom Chadd. Welcome once again to another of our book club episodes of Heyer Today. Yep, it's the podcast all about Regency romance queen, Georgette Heyer. This week Sara-Mae will be reading The Nonesuch, (one of her favourite Heyers) with two fabulous people who have never encountered the author before. In her quest to indoctrinate more readers, she's converted a whopping 12.5 out of 16 so far – pretty good going. Do you know anyone you think would like Heyer? Why not introduce them to this podcast? Kate Hinksman is a comedy writer who's contributed to BBC Radio Four Extra's Newsjack and the CBBC sketch show Class Dismissed, as well as the technology podcast Design Spark's History Makers. And In 2018 she was shortlisted for the BBC's Felix Dexter Bursary. Will Kate enjoy Heyer's wit and skill with dialogue? Charlotte Nugent spends her time working for The Mercer's Company as a Programme Manager, but she's also a stellar cook. She's run a food stall as the Urban German selling the most delicious schnitzels, rouladen and other Teutonic treats – so she was the perfect person to discuss the food in Georgette's book. From turtle soup to wax baskets of prawns enjoy this aural feast with us, as we read: The Nonesuch. Find Kate here - @katelilian89 You can find Message to Bears here.  Tie your brand to a current event to boost brand recognition and reinforce corporate values. Lance Looper, TREW Marketing Brand and Content Strategy Director, has watched newsjacking evolve from a PR best practice to a well-honed content marketing strategy since his early days in the business. In that time, he's seen many successes but some BIG crash-and-burn attempts as well. In this episode, Lance and I debate the benefits and risks of newsjacking, and he shares four questions every marketer should consider before jumping in:1. Is there a tie between this event and my brand?2. Did someone get hurt?3. Is the timing right?4. Is this funny or offensive?

In Brown Baby, Nikesh Shukla explores themes of racism, feminism, parenting and our shifting ideas of home. By turns heartwrenching, hilariously funny and intensely relatable, the memoir is dedicated to the author’s two young daughters and serves as an act of remembrance to the grandmother they never had a chance to meet. In this emotionally stirring session, Shukla navigates the porous boundaries of love, grief and fatherhood in conversation with British stand-up comedian, radio host and presenter Nish Kumar, ultimately showing us how it’s possible to believe in hope. Shukla is a British author and screenwriter, and the editor of the 2016 collection of essays The Good Immigrant. His other works include the novels Coconut Unlimited and The One Who Wrote Destiny. Kumar is the host of The Mash Report on BBC Two, Hello America on Quibi and BBC Radio 4 Extra's topical comedy show Newsjack, among others.

When big news breaks, it's tempting to check if there's a chance to add your company's voice to the issue (how's your Pokemon Go pitch coming along, by the way?). As March Senior Account Executive Alex Jafarzadeh recently wrote, the recent Brexit story provided interesting examples of what works and what can go wrong when you try to offer your spokesperson to reporters as an expert on a major timely news story. "Newsjacking," as this PR strategy is called, can pay off when you have a legitimate angle or comment to offer a journalist. However, a poorly conceived pitch might come off as trivial, clueless and even tasteless depending on the story and timing. On this week's Hacks and Flacks, we ask Alex and March Account Director Courtney Allen: when does this type of pitching cross the line, and how can PR pros ensure that their pitch actually benefits both the reporter and their client? The Frequency of Laughter: A History of Radio Comedy

The Frequency of Laughter is a six-part history of radio comedy, covering 1975-2005, presented by journalist and radio fan Grace Dent. In each episode she brings together two figures who were making significant radio comedy at the same time, and asks them about their experiences. This is a conversational history that focuses on the people who were there and the atmosphere within the BBC and the wider comedy world that allowed them to make great radio - or not. This final edition features Justin Edwards and Jan Ravens looking at radio comedy in the early 2000s. Justin is now known for his work on In And Out Of The Kitchen and Radio 4 Extra's Newsjack, but got his first series in 2003 as part of the sketch team The Consultants. Jan's association with radio comedy dates back to the early 1980s when she became the first-ever female radio comedy producer, but became beloved of the Radio 4 audience for her work on Dead Ringers, which started in 2000. Grace asks them about the atmosphere within the Radio Comedy department and within the BBC; they discuss the difference between topical comedy and satire, and whether the Radio 4 audience necessarily wants either; and they discuss the contribution a good sound engineer can make to a programme. The Frequency of Laughter is presented by Grace Dent, a journalist for The Independent, and is a BBC Radio Comedy production. Presenter ... Grace Dent Guest ... Justin Edwards Guest ... The Craft of Comedy conference, held in Llandudno, North Wales on 22 February 2014, was aimed at people looking to get into the comedy business. In this master class from the conference, John Finnemore, creator and writer of John Finnemore’s Souvenir Programme and Cabin Pressure talks to BBC Radio Comedy producer Colin Anderson about radio sketch writing. He talks about how he made it as a sketch writer and gives his advice to fledgling comedy writers. Having done his fair share of low-profile comedy gigs, John recommends that stand up comedy is a good training ground. Whether at a students’ union or a room above a local pub, this is your chance to find out what works and whether your sketches will stand up or fall flat in front of an audience. As John puts it, you need to perform your sketches live “to find out where the laughs are.” Sketch writing is easier to get into than trying to pitch a whole sitcom series to a radio show. A sketch may only be a couple of minutes, but once it’s been accepted, you can quickly build your relationship with that broadcaster. With the growth of open door radio shows such as The Show What You Wrote and Newsjack, it’s easier than ever for budding sketch writers to approach programme-makers and see results. John describes how best to pitch to these shows, which both accept submissions from completely new writers. John advises writers to keep their sketches short. Familiarise yourself with the style and cast of a show, avoid racist, sexist or violent content and remember to always include a punchline. The more you can become known as a promising writer the more useful feedback you will get from programme makers to help improve your work. John also encourages sketch writers to keep notebooks with them at all times and to never throw an idea away – you can always improve upon it later. Find out what writing routine works best for you, whether that means writing at 6am or 8pm. He also says that although comedy sketch show producers do get sent a lot of submissions, very few of them are usable, so good writers will stand out straight away - “the competition isn’t as daunting as you might think.” John Finnemore is a comedy writer for BBC Radio 4 Extra’s airline-themed sitcom Cabin Pressure, as well as the Radio Academy award winning sketch show John Finnemore’s Souvenir Programme. He has also written for That Mitchell & Webb Look, Dead Ringers and The Now Show. Colin Anderson graduated from the BBC’s programme-making trainee scheme to become a producer for BBC Comedy. He has produced sketch shows for various BBC Radio stations, as well as the comedy series Josie Long: All of The Planet‘s Wonders and The Maltby Collection. He has won Radio Academy Awards for The Now Show and Mark Thomas: My Life In Serious Organised Crime.
