Birdman enlisted in the Navy after watching the Twin Towers collapse on 9/11 and served eight years as a U.S. Navy SEAL attached to SEAL Team SEVEN, completing three combat tours to Iraq before being assigned to Advanced Training Command as an Instructor. In 2005, while serving in Iraq, Birdman was riding atop a Humvee manning the gun turret in enemy territory, when his vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device (IED), causing a detonation and throwing him from the Humvee. Birdman regained composure with his face and hands burned and witnessed his fellow team members suffer devastating burn and blast injuries. His entire team survived their injuries and went back to operating. In 2012, Birdman established Sons of the Flag to help Veteran and First Responder burn survivors and their families find the help and medical attention they truly deserve. He recognized that burn care treatments and advancements had not been evolving as other forms of injuries, so he made it his mission to do something about it! He is also the founder of the Birds Eye View Project, addressing the extreme needs of Veterans and First Responders through extreme sports. In the midst of running two nonprofit organization, Birdman also authored “Sons of the Flag: Real Accounts from the last 100 years of American Service”, a book dedicated to relaying a selection of real stories of American Heroes. Then, Birdman had a special calling because of a teammate and dear friend that he lost too soon. Now a sponsored athlete in the extreme sports arena, he has founded The Human Performance Project. This Human Performance Project will encompass taking a deeper dive into health and wellness giving our next generation a better understanding and roadmap on taking proper care of their bodies through physical, mental, emotional and spiritual guidance from world renowned experts in their fields. For his leadership and courage under fire, JP was awarded a Silver Star, 2 Bronze Stars with Valor and the Army Commendation Medal with Valor helping Task Unit Bruiser to become the most highly decorated special operations unit of the Iraq War. He worked closely with SEAL Officers Jocko Willink, his Task Unit Commander, and Leif Babin, and was the driving force on many of the daring combat operations Jocko and Leif wrote about in Extreme Ownership. Upon his return, J.P. again worked directly for Jocko as a training instructor at Naval Special Warfare Group One Training Detachment, where he orchestrated realistic and challenging training scenarios for Special Operations Urban Combat training and Close Quarters Combat training to better prepare SEAL units for the real-world battlefield. He also served as a Combatives Instructor, Marksmanship Instructor and earned his Master Trainer Specialist qualification while helping Jocko rebuild and enhance these training programs into the highly effective platforms they are today. Ryan “Birdman” Parrott was a trained sniper in his SEAL team. After transitioning out of the SEAL teams, there was an assumption that they were safe, back home on American soil. On January 2nd, 2019, Birdman received a call from a teammate, stating that his SEAL team partner David R. Metcalf had taken his own life. As he navigated his own grief, Birdman was inspired to do more than simply mourn. The issues facing war tattered and battle worn veterans is far beyond just a label of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Birdman recognized that despite the well intentioned non-profits to help these vets, we continue to lose thousands of military members and first responders every year. Army Veteran Daniel Somers wrote this in his suicide note in 2013: “I am left with basically nothing. Too trapped in a war to be at peace, too damaged to be at war.” As with Birdman's observations, Daniel's words suggest that there is a whole body element to post traumatic stress that is being missed. Birdman reached out to a physician to discuss human performance in people with trauma. His hypothesis was to test these individuals on a physiological level and obtain a baseline. Birdman has assembled a world class team of Physicians, Ph.D.'s, Phycologists, Physiatrists, Sports Physiologists, and former Special Operators to make up the Human Performance Project. The mission is to create a manual to guide the tactical population, enabling them to thrive upon entry, during and post service. Ken & Eric are honored to host Birdman on the GCP. BenGreenfieldLife.com/humanperformanceproject A few weeks ago, a guy named Ryan "Birdman" Parrott contacted me. In a nutshell, he said... "My sniper partner in the SEAL Teams took his life 3 years ago and I am tired of it. I know for a fact that there are plenty of brain treatment centers around the country but the military, first responder communities' leadership don't seem to care about their health, nutrition and sleep, so we are going to work with physicians, sports physiologists, and mental health experts to develop a simplistic manual that will showcase: 1) turning the ignition on so that kids who are starting to get athletic can understand how to create a baseline of correct fitness and how to get back to homeostasis (this also goes for brand new military members and first responders because they don't get taught human performance); 2) restarting the engine for the war fighter, career fire fighter and law enforcement, so that they can come out of their careers unfractured. This manual should and will discuss what to do on the flip side to reboot. I am not going to sit back and watch another war fighter take their own life because they are not being tended to after devoting everything that God has given to them to national security. I have run a successful non-profit for burn survivors called 'Sons of the Flag' for the past ten years and am now making this my number one focus to do my part... ...it's called The Human Performance Project... ...and I would love your advice on nutrition and supplementation as we begin this training and as we analyze our blood to give us all a better understanding of what it truly making us better. These are all war fighters on the team that will be training to pull this off and I am the youngest guy on the team, so we have our work cut out for us." So I decided to get Ryan on the show so that you can be educated on how to truly optimize performance, especially when you need to be on the physical and mental cutting edge. Ryan's Human Performance Project is designed to gain outcomes on human performance by testing supplements while training and looking deep into the DNA, physiology, and human spirit to create a docuseries along with a manual that supports all data-driven findings and proof of concept. Essentially pressing the reset button on a 20-year military veteran or first responder and starting the engine for the next generation to train, eat, sleep, diet, and live well. Ryan “Birdman” Parrott, is an Author, Public Speaker, Former Navy SEAL, Patent Holder, Action Sports Athlete, and Founder of two non- profits benefitting Veterans and First Responders is originally from Detroit, Michigan. Ryan “Birdman” Parrott, Author, Public Speaker, and Founder of two non-profits benefitting Veterans and First-Responders is originally from Detroit, Michigan. Ryan regained composure with his face and arms burned, and witnessed his fellow team members suffer devastating burn and blast injuries. While Ryan’s burns were only first and second degree, his teammates suffered lifelong injuries. After completing his service, Ryan moved to Dallas, and in April of 2011, Ryan had the privilege of meeting a retired Army Ranger officer who suffered significant burn injuries, and Ryan was inspired and humbled by his display of strength and courage, despite his debilitating scarring. Ryan was discouraged that this Ranger, and others like him, were not benefitting from the progressive treatment of burns in the same way that amputees benefit from incredible advancements in prosthetics. Searching for better answers, Ryan sought out physicians, medical professionals, civilian burn survivors as well as fire-fighters and paramedics, seeking to understand how burn treatment could be improved. In 2012, Ryan established Sons of the Flag to help burn survivors and their families find the help and medical attention that they deserve. He is also the founder of the Bird’s Eye View Project, addressing the extreme needs of Veterans and First Responders through extreme sports. And, he is the author of Sons of the Flag: Real Accounts from the last 100 years of American Service. ------------------------------------------------ This episode is brought to you by StrikeForce Energy.
